63.0. "Reliant Scimitars" by IOSG::BOWIE (Scott Bowie, IOSG) Mon Feb 01 1988 15:06

Does anybody have any experience of or any comment (!) on the
Reliant Scimitar SS1 (1600) as a cheap reliable sports car for someone
looking for something *other* than an XR205GTturbo?

Know any good rumours about the economic state of Reliant?

(The SS1 is their little 2-seat roadster, not the V6 Ford powered
    coupe').

    Any information and/or comments appreciated.

    Thanks,
    	Scott

PS In the absence of any other, lets make this a note for all
    Relias (well, four-wheeled ones anyway... :-) )

63.15Scimitar GTEWELCLU::YOUNGPolicemen aren't nasty peopleTue Mar 30 1993 04:0917

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of the Scimitar GTE I have
always liked the look of these beasts and my wife recently commented
that she liked the look of them, I know they are getting a bit of a
collectors item but I think I know where I can get my hands on one for
a reasonable price, I've checked with my wifes insurance co. and they
will cover her for 190 pounds tptf which is not as bad as I thought but
I wa wondering if anyone knows about the practicalities of them, or if
there were particular models or years that attracted interest the
vehicle in question has been stripped to the chassis and rebuilt but
has been standing for at least 6 months and the body looks
tatty....cracks in the paint and very flat, it has no MOT it's a 1972
'L' plate manual with o/drive and full length webasto sunroof,
originally black resprayed white when the chassis was done up.
    Has anyone got any comments?

I nominate 63.15 as the note containing the longest sentence I've ever
    read.

    Laurie.

PS. I rate the Scimitar too, smashing car.

What's the running gear? I think Ford, but check availability
of parts. For most Ford bits, they're cheap (even from Ford).
As for a GRP body, you'll have to allow a bit for a good
respray. I agree, I like them too.

63.18SE5a !SUBURB::BETTSCTue Mar 30 1993 15:3716

1972 Should be an SE5a, more sought by Scimitar purists as they had
superior handling qualities to that of the SE6 (later, wider bodied
    version).

The running gear is stock Ford 3.0 Essex, the only problems being
overheating and on rare occasions the fuel lines are known to break
resulting in fire, NOT good on a fibreglass car.

On the whole a good value for money classic, my advice is to contact
the RSSOC they'll give you all the tips you require plus they're one of
the best car clubs around. I'll try and find the number fo you !!

    Chris,
if you could find the no. for the owners club I would be very grateful.
    Is the engine absolutely stock?
What about the rest of the parts brakes suspension etc? are they all stock
from one car or another or are they specialised reliant parts?

p.s a bit more punctuation today! (please note time of previous entry)
63.20RSSOC Tel NoSUBURB::BETTSCWed Mar 31 1993 14:2815
    Hi Richard

The RSSOC tel no is 081 977 6625.

In answer to your questions I.m no expert on the Scimitar but most
parts engine/transmission are Ford sourced, suspension tends to be a
mixture of Triumph, Jaguar and often Reliant manufactured items.

In general the very nature of the way these cars were built, parts were
raided from several large manufacturers and seemed tochange regularly
    as the years progressed.

    Hope this helps

    Chris
