2024.1Nashoba Paving - Acton8BALL::MARCONISTue Feb 23 1988 11:0419
 A very strong recommendation for:

     Nashoba Paving
     29 Quarry Road
     Acton, MA
     617-264-0044

Last summer they paved our driveway in Groton, Mass. They did an outstanding
job at a very reasonable price. The work was completed on schedule with
a minimum of hassles. A very professional outfit.

P.S. -- Make sure to get in touch with them early in the year. They
get booked up quickly. We got an estimate in early March,
but they could not schedule us sooner than late May.

2024.2People's - GardnerULTRA::PRIBORSKYThat's the stuff dreams are made of.Fri Mar 25 1988 16:176
Peoples in Gardner is the Rolls Royce paving contractor in that
area. They dig down about 2 feet, fill with gravel, and then put
two coats of asphalt down. Two of my neighbors have had Peoples
do the work. The others (not Peoples) just scraped the surface,
leveled it, and put the asphalt down. I'll make bets on which
    driveways will last the longest.
2024.3Nashoba Paving is VERY professionalDELNI::MHARRISMark Jay Harris, Term Srvr Mktg MgrSat Mar 26 1988 02:3926
Re: .6 Rolls Royce's cost BIG Bucks! Do you really need it? I am
told that Public Interstates cost the government over $500 per running
FOOT and they are rated at over 50 tons (so I am told). Military
tanks could drive across and not harm it! My comment is this:
How many military tanks are you going to have parked in your
        driveway? 8-)
Seriously, 4-6 inches of properly installed stone under 3 or so
inches of blacktop are more than sufficient for homes.

I just had Nashoba Paving come out and give me an estimate (in Shirley)
for my driveway. 98' X 16' with a stone base as described. Also,
an existing 98' X 8' driveway would be removed. Their estimate:
$2800. Seemed very reasonable and they supplied a signed, written
estimate including material list and diagrams. very professional.

I am now considering just having the additional 8 feet added to
the existing driveway. They tell me it will 'WORK OK', even if it
will be obviously two pieces. Doing so eliminates the need to remove
the existing driveway. Their estimate for this 'add-on' was: $1000.
(They also indicated that if I could wait till another job was going
to be done in the area, they could probably knock-off $200-$300
    from that number!)

I had my driveway done last year by TriState PAving Amherst, N.H..
They removed my existing driveway(crushed stone) laid done 4" of
cement dust and then 3" of blacktop and 1"1/2 of finished blacktop.

They were on time did a great job and they guarantee there work
    against cracking for a year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Rich,

I had my driveway enlarged last fall to make room for two cars.
Here are a couple of pointers:

    1. Get estimates from a number of contractors -- I had estimates
       of $750 to $390 for a 10' by 15' addition!
    2. Ask them for references from 2 to 3 years ago -- as driveway
problems don't show up in the first year or two.
    3. Your cost is going to depend on (a) the area and (b) any preparation
they have to do. In my case they had to dig out some of the
topsoil (too soft to use) and fill with gravel.

I went with Tom Proia in Bilerica 617-663-6338. He was the $390
estimate and he had excellent references. I don't know if he will
go to Townsend or not ......

I know that the addition was worth it for me -- I hate having to
move cars in order to go to work!!

    Hope this helps

I recently had a driveway put in by Tom Proia (663-6338) out of
Billerica. He did an excellent job, was the cheapest of three
estimates ($2,390 for approximately 1500 square feet - including
the paving of the garage). There was minimal grading done, and
six inches of gravel,2" of binder and 1.5 inches of top were put
down. It looks great, he is very neat and VERY professional.

I used to work with Dick and his son Brian, they run a top-quality
operation and insist on quality. I dont hesitate to recommend them
to friends . You wont find them in the yellow pages as they rely
on word-of-mouth to get new work ( they don't have any trouble getting
it either) . Has been in the business over 20 years and they will
you give you a quality job for a fair price.

As far as price goes , as .1 said it depends on sqare footage,
nature of job, and how much excavation/fill is required -
If you do give them a call fell free to tell Dick that
    "dan sent ya".

Nashoba Paving Co. in Acton. High quality at a reasonable cost. They
did our driveway 3 years ago. Of the seven contractors I had look
at the job, they were willing to put down the most tar (1.5" binder,
1.5" topcoat), for the least amount of money.

They came in and did the grading. I then installed the railroad
ties, and they finished the job.

in July sometime (if it ever stops raining). Mike Grady will put
six inches of gravel, two inches of binder (base) and one inch of
top coat for $5500 on a 410 foot section of driveway. That works
out to $1.34 a square foot.

I just had my 26' by 85' driveway completely redone (took out the
old surface, dug down a foot or so, filled with bank gravel or crushed
rock or whatever they call it to a depth of 6" to 12" as necessary
to get the right grade and surfaced with 2" of binder and 2" of
fine surface paving) for $4500 by Vinnie DelDuca of Northboro. It
took about three days and I'm very pleased with the results as well
as with the way the crew worked. The biggest problem they are faced
with nowadays is what to do with the old hard-top they remove. It
has to be recycled by a processing plant since it is classified
as a hazardous waste, and many plants have as much of it as they
need and don't want to accept any more. BTW, DelDuca's phone number
is 617-393-3037. (No, I'm not affilliated in any way.)

Try Peoples in Gardner. On a neignbor's driveway they dug down
about 1 foot, hauled away three dumptruck loads of old dirt and
gravel. They then filled that region with in with sand and gravel,
packed it to no end, and topped over it. It cost more than the

I just had my driveway paved by Healy, mentioned earlier in
this note. They did a super job, I am very pleased.

I had Tom Prioa do the first estimate, he came in the lowest
because he was going to resurface the driveway rather then remove
the existing (in very bad shape) driveway. Tom didn't think it was
necessary to remove the current driveway.

I had two other estimates who told me that the existing driveway
must be removed or will get have hills and valleys (like the existing
one) in a matter of a few years. The two other companies said they
would not take the job if I just wanted to resurface, since it wouln't
    be doing the job right.

I'm sure Tom does a good job but I'm surprised that he saw no
need to remove the existing driveway.

Nashoba Paving (in Acton) and Tom Proia (in Billerica) do not do

I called both firms based on references herein... Nashoba Paving,
i.e., the contractor himself I presume, was very polite in saying
that he doesn't [usually] work out this far. However, he offered me
some phone advice in terms of approximate cost based on a brief
description of the area [size] and work to be done, which by the
way, HE asked me about. In addition, he said that if I don't find
any other contractor to tdo the job, to call him back, and he 'help

Tom Proia's firm simply said they don't work out here.

Vern Bay (I think that's the owner's name as well) re-paved his (my

company originally paved many driveways on that street 20+ years ago.

I just had my driveway paved by Merrimack Valley Paving Co., a small

		    Merrimack Valley Paving Co,
			(508)957-5173
			52 Wagon Wheel Rd
			Dracut, Ma

They did an excellent job (by my standards)... the driveway looks great!..
in regards to workmanship, they took extra care to ensure that it has good
drainage, including adding a small 'lip' at the end to prevent water from
the street flowing into the driveway. They also dug up all weeds that were
growing through the existing base, and then added more base gravel.

In addition, the two co-owners -- Ted Leoustakos and Rudy Fugera (sp??) --
were very professional... They were very responsive in doing the
estimate; they got the job done in the estimated time -- actually ahead of
time(*); and, most importantly to me, they took time to explain every
aspect of their process, readily answering all my questions, and advised
me on how to maintain the driveway to make it last longer. Lastly, they
guarantee their work 'indefinitely' as long as I maintain it properly.

	* after I officially contracted them, they came three days earlier
than scheduled... so, finished a day early. :-)

Contact any time during the winter for design, etc. and any
time after April 1 for jobs that can start toward the end of April,
        weather permitting.

This is a relatively new company with very experienced people.
They are trying to build up a good reputation in the area, and are
working hard to satisfy their customers. (No, I have no association
with them other than being a satisfied customer, myself.)

I called around to a lot of paving companies trying to find one
that would also help me solve some water drainage problems (old
driveway sloped down from the street to the house and newly added
garage). Finally, Continental Paving told me the job was too small
for them but referred me to one of its employees who handles smaller
    jobs, part-time.

Well, the initial contact was a bit difficult to make but persistance
paid off. Dana came out, listened (I mean REALLY listened) to my
goals and concerns about drainage, etc. We exchanged a number of
ideas and it was quickly clear to me that he knew what compromises
to make in the design to ensure that I got the best overall solution
    to my problem.

We set a tentative schedule (limited to weekends, at this time of
year) and he ensured that everything fell into place correctly. Two
    final points are worth mentioning.

First, I was on-site during both the grading work and the paving.
This allowed us to adjust the specifics of the design at the last
minute with immediate mutual agreement. At their suggestion, they
did things like extend the pavement at the top to go in front of
the mailbox and at the bottom to line a drainage area and reduce
    erosion.

Second, Dana assembled a friendly, experienced crew that worked
well together. I am mentioning this only because it was so noticable
and I am certain it contributed to the excellent final result.

We just had our driveway paved by Nashoba Paving and are very pleased
with the results! We have over 5000 sq. ft. of driveway because it
is common with our neighbor, so it was a fairly large job. My husband,
who is a Construction Project Manager for Grossman's and has paving
jobs done all the time, was very pleased with the work that Nashoba
did and felt that it was one of the best paving jobs that he has seen.

We found them to be very easy to deal with and highly reliable.
We were told that work would start at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning,
and the crew arrived by 7:50 and started working (both days). They
did the grading on the first day, and the paving on the second day.

We got 3 quotes on the driveway, and Nashoba was in the middle, but there
was only about $100 difference between them and the low-bidder. However,
they had better equipment for the job that we wanted done (a vibratory
roller comes to mind), and had other glowing recommendations in this
file, so we went with them, and are very glad that we did.

    Another satisfied Nashoba Paving customer.

I would like to second Note 2019.42's recommendation of DLB Paving. I had made
initial contact with Dana back in the spring, but I wasn't ready to pave then.
Then, after getting estimates from DLB and several other pavers in the area this
fall, I went with DLB. Not only because he came in with the next to the lowest
bid, but he seemed very sincere and quality minded. I only witnessed the pre-
work (putting in more crushed gravel and grading it), but he came in and did
a base coat and a final coat, and thus far it looks great, and is holding up
very well.

I understand he's working full time at it now (he was working at Continental
full time and his company [DLB] on weekends), so I'm sure his scheduling will
improve tremendously.

Last year we had our driveway paved by Harry Peters of Peters paving. They
did an excellent job. We got in their queue late in the season, and Harry
advised us that it would probably be too cold to get a good finish on the top
coat of the driveway. He recommended that we just get the base coat, and then
get the finish coat the next summer. We did that, and it now looks great. He
also honored the price he had given us a year earlier when we finally had him
do the top coat, even though we had extended the driveway a little bit in a
couple of corners and the top coat was actually covering a larger area.

In addition, Harry is a really nice guy. I enjoyed talking with him while he
did the layout and the work, he gave my 4-year-old son a ride on the
steamroller, etc.

I echo your sentiments about Harry Peters. He's very honest, very
professional, and very friendly. I'd use him again or recommend him
in an instant. Our written estimate was $1600 and that's exactly what
we paid more than 6 weeks later when the job was done. Our driveway was
done back in early April and so far it still looks terrific.

Two things I liked about Harry's work that I didn't like about most
other contractors was that he completely removed the old asphalt and
installed and compacted crushed stone, and he used a device to "cut"
the asphalt at the street so my driveway would butt up against the
    street and not overlap it.

Our neighbor had a new driveway installed last summer and it was laid
over the existing asphalt (which was a mess) and it was overlapped at
the street level. It's been only one year and his driveway is starting
to buckle already and it's chipping at the street level. The company
who did his driveway came over to give me an estimate on mine at the
time and they wanted $2000. I told him I wasn't crazy about his
methodology of laying new asphalt over the old and his comment was
that it made no difference whatsoever and that he "guaranteed" his
driveways for 15-20 years. Ahem, ahem. I'm glad we went with Peters
    Paving.

I had 2 paving contracter came in this week end. Tom Prola & son of
Billerica, and Century Paving in Malden.

Tom's estimate is about $2100 for the following job :

. dig about 384 sf new area ( grass, already level )
. put 4 inches of gravel in new area
. put 2 inches of binder in new area ( flush with existing driveway )
. put 2 inches of finish hot top on both new area and existing
    	  driveway

Centry Paying is $1000, less than 1/2 of Tom Prola's estimate. The only
different was that Centry Paving didn't mention about putting the 2 inches
of binder on new area before putting the 2 inches of hot top. So I assume
he won't use the binder. My question is, What is the binder for ? Is it
really required on new area ? Is it worth the extra $1100 ?

Anybody has experience with Centry Paving in Malden ?
    Thanks

2024.36Binder is importantWONDER::BURNSTue May 11 1993 11:4613
I had Tom put in an extension of my driveway last fall. I had 3 bids
and all fell within $100 of each other. I was very satisfied with Toms
    work.
The Binder is important for new work. The Binder is a rough coat of
asphalt (read cheap) that helps by increasing the thickness of the
finished driveway (2" binder + 2" finished). If you go with only the
2" finished driveway, I'll bet you will have problems especially if
a heavy truck were backed into the driveway.

I'd call Century paving to make sure that their quote was for the 2+2
driveway, or have them quote for it.

So far I have estimates of $8000 and $13000. The low is from Stan's
Paving. Anyone use these guys. I heard 1 questionable report on them. Feel
free to send me private email. Hudson paving is coming next week.

Apparently knit-pak (or RAP, Recycled Asphalt Product) as it is
sometimes called is recycled asphalt that is packed down. I still have
quesitons about it's durability but this is the way I will go on the road. It
cuts the price of the job in 1/2. It also provides a good base for finsh paving
later on.

I had it done last year in a hot July day. For a 24'X 35' driveway, it cost
~$2,400 for what I remenber. This include the following from what I remember

1. Digging out my driveway 10-12"
2. 6-8" of crush stones and rolling it.
3. Cut the end of the driveway.
4. 2 1/2" of rough asphalt. Roll
5. 1 1/2" of fine asphalt. Roll

Can't remember the exct thickness but I am pretty sure it was 4" of asphalt
overall.

I just had Tate Brothers complete my driveway and I am very happy with
them. It was a big job involving excavating, putting down a gravel base and
paving a 450X10 ft entrance road and a 22X66' parking area. They also put in a
450' drainage ditch, stone and pipe. The work looks great, they were fast and
took a lot of time. Except for the rain they showed up when they were supposed
to. They are also flexible on their payment terms.

I second Tate Brothers Paving. They just did my driveway and it came out
great. I was very concerned about the water run-off and it was critical to
get the grade right to keep the water away from the house. They tested
the water flow between coats just to be sure!

One part of my walkway did collapse this past weekend (1 week after the
job.) but that was due to some hidden settling from all the rain that
weekend. I have a new foundation. They said they would come and fix it for
no charge.

I'm also still waiting for the bill. They don't have *any* of my money
yet for a $2000 job.

5%!? I've died and gone to heaven :-)

The sad part is alot of people really think they are getting
a discount to begin with. Remember, all contractors are
	alike ....
2024.75ANY EXPERIENCES WITH A. THIBODEAU/MILFORD NHSCAMP::PHINNEYMon Feb 10 1997 14:0323
I've only seen one reference to A. Thibodeau in Milford NH. Does
anyone else have experience with him?

Arnie and his wife came out this Sat. to give me an estimate. They
were very professional and polite. I don't have the exact dimensions
of the driveway but it's approximately 150' long, 10' wide with an area
at least twice that width in front of the garages.

He estimated $5400 to take out the existing driveway (in very bad
shape; including rocks, roots, checking for clay and replacing drainage
pipe, if necessary, in washed stone), pave with 1 1/2" base coat and 1
1/2" finish coat. He recommended that I seal it 6 months later and
then do so every 3 or so years.

I've also tried, repeatedly, to get ahold of Gill Paving/Milford,
Shattuck Paving/Milford and Chuck Bennett/New Boston. Does anyone have
any experiences with them. Also, does the price/work that Arnie quoted
    me sound reasonable.

Any info/pointers would be greatly appreciated as this is my first
    experience!
