Sediment is more likely to *reduce* temperature and pressure, but
furring of the hot-out pipe might be the cause. However, It's probably
the vent valve-spring has weakened. If you can live with it, try
reducing the cold water pressure at the inlet valve (or at the mains)
and see if the valve stops blowing. If that does it then replace the
valve - all you need is a wrench, a new valve and a bit of thread sealing
compound or tape. 10 minute job.

| Thanx, Collin, it turns out upon closer examination that there was
a pin-hole just below the T&P valve so I had to replace the heater
anyhow!! The good news is that I got a free replaement heater from Sears

| Yes, I'm quite happy, even if I did have to pick it up and install
it myself. Of course they will not warrantee the replacement for
another 8 yrs. My warrantee date is 8/93 the end date of the old
heater. But I'm still happy.

I would call the main office and blow some steam. Its a new
tank. What would have happened it there were 2 days left on
you old tank warrantee. "Oh, there is only a 2 day warrantee
on this tank......." If all else, it might be worth it to buy
a service (warrantee) contract seeing your other tank lasted only
5 years......
Sears can be strange. For example I went to one place to exchange
my bad "life time shock" for a new set. Well, seeing I didnt buy it
in Springfield and they had changed to a different style shock. He
wanted me to pay the difference in price. I stopped in the Auburn
store....."Thanks you, Come again!"

| This is absolutely normal practice. The 8-year warranty was included in the
purchase price - they guarantee that you will have a functioning heater for
8 years. If you want to pay for a new heater, they'll be happy to give you
another 8 years for it.

| I rented in Fitchburg for a while. The hot water heater would vent onto
the floor every night, around 3:00am. At first we thought it was a weak
pressure valve, but three valves later could not believe that was the
problem.
Turned out that there was a problem with pressure regulation (no pressure
regulator). When the pressure built up in the morning, the hot water
tank popped its valve. This may also explain why we blew a tank while
we were living there (before the pressure valve problems started with the
new tank).
You might just want to check your water pressure, to be sure the problems
with the hot water tank are not really problems with your pressure
regulator...

| re: warranty on replacement units.
what i want to know is how come the UN-warrantied replacement unit always
fails after a year or two. this has happened to me twice. the worst case
was a sears replacement with an 8 year warranty (invalid because it was
replacement) that failed at 2 years. -craig
