    	Could someone give me some advice on who I should contact
    	in the town of Hudson Ma. in regards to a problem I'm having
    	with a construction company doing work near my house.
    	The problem being, a newly constructed road is causing rain
        water runoff to collect on my property. I've already asked
        the outfit if they would do something about it, and they
    	refused. To further complicate things the water colection
    	is within a short distance of my septic system/leach field.

    	Thanks in advance
        steve

16.7Street sweepersTYCOBB::C_DENOPOULOSMon Nov 21 1988 16:339
    Has anyone ever hired a street sweeper? I'm wondering how much
    they would charge to do a street about 150 yards long, one time
    only. Because of some landscaping work I had done, the street got
    covered with sand from the trucks carrying my landfill. The town
    doesn't own the street so they won't do it.

    p.s. The street is in Billerica Mass.
16.8Won't the rain wash it off, anyway?MISFIT::DEEPThe moving hand NOTEs, then having nit...Mon Nov 21 1988 17:023

Look at it this way.... You're ready for the first snowfall! 8^)
16.9TYCOBB::C_DENOPOULOSMon Nov 21 1988 17:234
    The rain has only moved the sand closer to the side. From the edge
    to about 3 feet in is still covered with sand on both sides.

Ok... now that I'm done being silly (on this note, anyway)... 8^)

If you're only talk 150 ft or so, a couple of neighborhood kids with
push brooms can probably finish the job in a couple of hours, and will
be a heck of a lot cheaper than a street cleaner. Of course, I don't
know what the average street cleaner gets these days... 8-)

    WAG: $500 to get the machine there; $25 to sweep the street.
16.13...ok, so ... I never said I could read! 8-)MISFIT::DEEPThe moving hand NOTEs, then having nit...Mon Nov 21 1988 18:439

re: .4 ... ok, sorry...it's a Monday! 150 yards, not feet, mean multiply
the time, or the number of kids by 3... also your cost. But that would
still be a lot cheaper than the machine. Also, if you have a few friends
and don't mind wasting a Saturday...that may be cheaper still... only
requires about $40 for a half keg! 8^)

16.14VINO::GRANSEWICZWhich way to Tahiti?Tue Nov 22 1988 12:1110

    I'd wait until next spring to do anything. Assuming you're in a
    snow area, the sand will be thrown with the snow when you
    plow/snowblow. In the spring if there is any left, you can use
    a side discharge lawn mower to blow it off.

    Or you can learn to live with it, which is the cheapest solution.
    ;-)

    Well, I live in Billerica too, and there is ALWAYS about 3 ft
    sand/dirt/dust/leaves/junk on the roadside....
    you learn to live with it.

16.16How are those services handled now?ARCHER::FOXWed Nov 23 1988 17:476
    One question. If the town doesn't own the street, who sands, salts,
    and plows during the winter? If someone is supplying that service,
    sweeping/cleaning usually comes with the package.
    I'd wait for spring, myself.

16.17Nobody does anything.TYCOBB::C_DENOPOULOSMon Nov 28 1988 15:394
    Nobody does any salting,sanding or plowing. The town is not yet
    responsable for keeping the street clear.

    Never having bought such services myself I don't know, but shouldn't
the landscaper be responsible for cleaning up his own mess?

16.19I contracted seperately.TYCOBB::C_DENOPOULOSWed Nov 30 1988 15:3210
    re: -1 No. This wasn't a contractor doing the work. I was having
    this stuff done myself. I acted as my own contractor. The people
    that I bought the fill from, the people that trucked it, and the
    people that spread it are all different people.

    Who are the people that clean store parking lots. I can't seem
    to find them in the yellow pages. I guess I haven't figured out
    the right place to look yet.

    There are three listed in the Framingham (MA) yellow pages under
    "Sweeping Service - Power". I'd check your local Yellow Pages.

       I had the same problem last year. I asked the company to fix the
    runoff problem. The forman of the crew told me it was the law that
    they had to correct the problem.

    Call the company directly and relate the problem to them. If that
    does not work,call or better yet visit the building department
    in your town.

    I assume the forman I talked with was company owner since they
    both had the same name. So I'm not sure calling the company would
    help. But Thanks anyway.

    	I suggest calling the city and explaining it to them. Given that
    the drainage problem might soon be effecting your leech field (like
    today with all the rain outside...), you might get some quick action
    from them. Incidently, is this road construction a city-sponsored
    project or being paid for by a private developer?

16.4Use the town offices.TYCOBB::C_DENOPOULOSNo more Mr. Nice guy!Thu Nov 16 1989 18:406
    It should be the town engineer that handles that. You could also
    try the building department, board of health, and the conservation
    commision, in that order. Forget the contracter because that's
    all he is, a contracter. He could care less about your yard.

16.5something else to check: DEQENOVA::FISHERPat PendingFri Nov 17 1989 07:406
    I'm just guessing here: I have noticed that all construction
    projects (seems like all, anyway) have a DEQE number posted
    on the site. It seems to me that DEQE would be very concerned
    with your water problem.

    You should also make sure that you get a certified letter to both
    the company and the town stating the problem. Copy your attorney
    also. This should cover you in case you have to go after damages
    and anyone denies you talked to them. Might even more the contractor
    if he sees you mean business.
