I got some from PNSH (Public Service of New Hampshire). I called
ahead told them how many I needed, then helped myself. Also for
a while the guys on the service trucks would drop them off in my
    yard.

re .1:

You got them for free? No wonder they're going broke!

    RE.2:

Yes I did get them free, but let me clarify a little better,
what I got from PNSH are the "tops" of the poles, not the whole
pole. They have no use for them after.

Its not an "IN" joke. Poles usually get hit and break off
about 12 - 18 inches above the ground, there's a very limited use for poles
that are 6 or so ft. too short.

When I was growing up we travelled frequently by train. I
don't remember exactly where it was, but at one of the train stops you
could look out over a small area (1/2 acre or so) planted with phone
(maybe they were electric) poles about 4ft. high, complete with cross
members, insulators, wiring, the whole thing. Our father used to tell
us that they "grew" them there. As we got older we started to doubt
it - well, they never seemed to get any bigger for one thing:-^). We
called him on it eventually and together concluded that it was some
kind of a training centre.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY WILLIAM N FOOTER INC, LOCATED IN MERIMACK,
N.H. (603-424-5543) MY DAD DRIVES FOR THEM AND THEY DELIVER
TELEPHONE POLES THROUGHOUT THE NEW ENGLAND AREA. I DO NOT KNOW
IF THEY SELL TO THE PUBLIC, NOR WHAT THE PRICE IS PER FOOT, BUT
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, IT IS QUITE EXPENSIVE. IF YOU CALL
AND FIND OUT, PLEASE LET US ALL KNOW.

    THANKS
