You could try Melanson Roofing out of Keene NH. They will be repairing
my slate roof sometime in the next few months (I contracted with them
last September). It's not that they are unreliable...they are just
very busy. I was told upfront that they probably couldn't do it
in 1986. They do mostly commercial work and they are NOT CHEAP.

For $4000 they are going to:
	- Replace all broken slates (about 50)
	- Reflash all valleys with copper. They are going to remove the
adjacent slates, place the copper, and restore the slates over
the copper. I had two estimates for this roof job in the $1200
range; those roofers were going to put fiberglass cloth over
the existing flashing and apply mastic. I don't believe they
were going to move the slates; so they would rely on the goop
to maintain the integrity of the valley.
	- Apply copper caps to all hips and ridges.
	- Reflash the chimney and plumbing vent pipe.
	- Preserve my copper finial! (my main roof is a square hip)

It seems like a lot of money but it would cost me that much to have
the slate removed and install asphalt (I'm not going to spend my
vacation on my roof, thank you). The slate, if properly cared for,
will last another 50 years. Besides, I like the looks of slate and green
    copper flashing.

Well, for the record, here is what happened.

I called ACTION roofing (in Lowell) on Tuesday, and spoke to an
answering service. The guy called back! He came out on wednesday
and gave me an estimate for $180 to fix the leak. He said that we
didn't need a cricket, but just a decent job done withthe flashing.

He also quoted me $135 to do the rain diverter, which is an 8' long
peice of heavy gauge alluminum L section.

Before I moved to mass, I used to try and get three estinates.
Now I'm pleased that I can get one. So we told the guy to go ahead...

Now the shocker -- he did the work yesterday morning (Thursday)!
That's ACTION ROOFING! I'll let you know what happedns when it rains!

2027.5Lincoln Metcalf - Groton/PepperellPOOL::MARCONISFri Apr 22 1988 11:4841
 A very strong recommendation for:

  Lincoln Metcalf Inc
   PO Box 318
   Pepperell, MA 01463
   617-433-6982 (call after 5:30)

The roof on our house in Groton, MA was in bad shape. It had several leaks
and serious problems with ice dams.

We had them do the following:

o Strip off the old shingles

  o Put down 6' of water/ice barrier

o Install new shingles, drip edge, and chimney flashing

  o Install ridge vent

When Lincoln came to do an estimate, he went over the various options
with us and explained the costs/benefits of each one. He impressed us
as a very honest person who was very interested in customer satisfaction.

They showed up on the promised date with a crew of 5 and had all the work
finished in a day and a half. They did a really nice job, used top
quality materials, and cleaned up after themselves. While not the
lowest of the estimates we got, we felt the price was very reasonable
given the quality of work and materials.

Before sending us the final bill, he stopped by to make sure that we
were happy with the work that was done.

Tell Lincoln that I sent you.

After 3 estimates, his was mid-range, and he did an excellent
job. He started a day earlier than expected, and completed the
job in 2 days. The roof was stripped, papered, and then covered
with 14 squares. Metal drip edges were installed and the flashing
was replaced/added where needed. The total cost was $2200 - that's
$1.57/sq. ft. (If one or two boards on the roof need replacing he
will do it at no extra charge.)

He has a very professional crew with him (no loud noise/radios
or foul language). He cleaned up the yard at the end of each day
then raked around the foundation of the house and swept the driveway
	on completion of the job.

He also does small framing and room additions.

I took the advice of a couple of people in Note 823 and contracted
Assabet Roofing, Hudson, Mass. They came in under three other
contractors and did an excellent job. Re-roofed over the existing
layer of shingles and you can't tell there's two layers. Did a

2027.11Action Roofing, LowellTANG::ALINSKASFri Jun 30 1989 15:3321
Here's another recommendation for Action Roofing in Lowell, Ma. They are
a father and son team with some helpers.

The main roof had some water seepage problem along the rakes and chimney.
Also, I was reframing an addition (the den) changing a shed roof to a gable
roof. The rafters and ceiling joists in the den were all rotted from the
leaking roof. I called them one evening and the guy said he'll be there within
the hour to take a look. Bill came out and looked things over, asked what the
problems were and what I needed done. He said the main roof was fine, it
just needed some rake flashing to stop the seepage and the chimney recaulked.
He gave some great ideas about my reframing job. I spent about an hour talking
with him. They came back the following week and did a great job. Put down
rubber, tar paper, drip edge, vents and shingles on the den roof and re-sealed
both chimeys and reflashed the one chimney. It's all dry now.

On the other hand, I also called Guaranteed Roofing from Burlington for
a bid. He said flat out I needed a new roof. When we talked specifics
about re-step-flashing the chimney, he said that he was not a mason and
that I would have to do that myself!! That's why I was calling him in the
first place. I have no mason experience, but I can bang nails.

We recently had gutters installed about 1-1/2 months ago by

Based on the positive recommendations in this file for Marlboro
Seamless Gutters, I recently had the owner, Joe Bovaconti, out for an
estimate. Be forewarned that he does not haul away the old gutters
but slices them up into "one foot pieces" for you. Since my town dump
will not accept exterior construction debris and I can't think of an
imaginative reuse for the @#$% things, I'm looking at other
    contractors.

Had one out today who not only came in with a lower bid but has no
    problem removing the old stuff.

They did a great job and the price was very resonable. I don't know

Current repair person only guarantees for 2 years, and exactly at the

I just got quotes from two roofers in Nashua, either of whom I'd be comfortable

work for me before and I like his dedication to the job. Others have

which is a larger operation. I haven't yet decided which bid to accept.

2027.28Chick Beaulieu - NashuaQUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centFri Sep 07 1990 17:1019
I highly recommend Chick Beaulieu Inc. in Nashua, NH, as contractors for
roofing and gutters. Of the contractors I called, they responded quickly
with a professional written quote, and the price was competitive with other
contractors. The work was done on schedule and the few problems we had with
the work were quickly corrected without argument.

One thing I liked about dealing with this firm, and Dan Poirier, the general
manager, was that they handled all the details. The job included some
carpentry work (adding overhang to two dormers, installing shadow boards
and installing ridge and soffitt vents), and this was all detailed in the
quote. Unlike some smaller contractors, Beaulieu has enough staff available
to get the job done on time, even with unforseen circumstances such as
one of the roofers falling ill during the job. Yes, they do subcontract
some of the work, but they guarantee the work for two years and insisted
on the highest quality. And the results were very nice indeed.

Beaulieu also installs replacement windows and does siding.

Their phone number is 603-883-5822.

    Another nod for Chick Beaulieu.

My grandparents contracted with a local firm last year to install an
addition to accomodate a new and enlarged bathroom and kitchen, new
roofing, new windows, and vinyl siding. The company they hired did an
awful job, took twice as long as they said they would, charged twice
the estimate, ordered the wrong materials, you name it -- whatever they
could have messed up, they did. In any event, my grandparents finally
got fed up and fired them and hired Chick Beaulieu to come in and finish
the job. The crew was in and out in no time and everything was done
according to their wishes and the estimate. And their new kitchen and
    bath look great.

I have a leak that has just re-occured after being 'fixed' for the summer.

I prefere to have it done properly if it doesn't cost too much... or until dec

the roof has a steep pitched shingled part (can you tell I'm not 'experienced
at this?) and a slight 20-30 degree 'rolled' roof part. My sister advises
me to use a roofing cement along the seams where they join, and a roof 'coat'?
to cover the whole roof. Is this worth trying on my own? the shingled part
appears to be realtively new & in good shape. Except that the chimney needs
to be 're-flashed' (?).

> My sister advises...a roof 'coat'? to cover the whole roof.

      With apologies to you sister...

Covering the entire roof with roofing tar or similar sealer may
fix the leak, but the fix will probably be temporary, possibly
very temporary. What coating the whole roof WILL do is make it
MUCH more difficult for a roofer to find the problem and fix it.

This type of quick fix looks sooooo easy, but often it results in
having to replace the entire roof when a small are that needs
repair might otherwise have been identified and fixed relatively
      cheaply.

If the line between the roll roofing and the shingles runs
horizontally accross the roof you should NOT seal it. Horizontal
joints in roofing are supposed to be "loose" so that any water
that gets under the higer section of roof can run out onto the
      surface of the lower section.

If the joint runs up and down the roof, you might benefit from
sealing it. I've had success with using roofing cemet in a
caulking tube (see your local hardware store). Lift each shingle
along the joint, starting from the bottom and working up. place a
line of roofing cement starting as far up under the shingle as you
can read and stopping 1-2" from the exposed edge of the shingle.
(The lines of cement run up and down, not accross the roof.) Press
the shigle back into position and move up the the next one.

NOTE: The preceeding paragraph is only a suggestion, NOT A
RECOMMENDATION. Without actually seeing your roof it is just about
impossible to know for sure if this might work.

I recently contracted Marlboro Seamless Gutters to replace all gutters
on my home, based on the recommendations in .12 and .13.

Owner Joe Bovaconti had the lowest quote of the three contractors I
checked out, but, more importantly, did excellent work and did it
quickly and efficiently as well. I am very pleased with his work, and
    would recommend him.

As an update to .13, Joe does haul away old gutters.

I highly recommend:

	    Four Seasons Roofing
	    Hudson, N.H.
	    (603)883-4463

The owner, Leo Graham, and his crew did a very professional and
conscientious job. Leo was very willing to answer all my questions. He
spent a half hour or so on the roof with me explaining what he thought
should be done. He even talked me out of reshingling the backside of the
house because he thought it was in adequate shape.

All of this work happened during Hurricane Bob. Leo came over the morning
before the storm hit to make sure everything was buttoned down. As soon as
the sky cleared, they we up on the roof finishing their work. I'm very
pleased with the job they did and how well they cleaned up after
themselves.

The price that they charged was on the low end of the estimates I received.
It cost $1813 to strip 2 layers and reshingle with 25 year Bird shingles
on a double garage, put a second layer of 25 year shingles on 1/2 the
house roof, and some other miscellaneous patch work. I don't know square
footage.

They also guarantee their work for 5 years.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like more details.

I want to put in a recommendation for Frank Exteriors in Nashua. Last fall
we wanted our house reroofed. It has a lot of weird extensions, some very flat
sections, some very steep sections, etc etc. We also have a number of gardens
around which my wife cared a lot about.

We called a number of the folks listed in here, some others mentioned by
other people, and Frank (recommended by my dentist!)

Many of the folks told us essentially that "Roofing is messy...no guarnatees on
the garden". Rich promised to cover things as necessary and be very careful in
picking things up. (My dentist had said he picked up well too). They also had
the lowest price, and included putting in some some vents (one along the peak,
a couple "stovepipe" type) very inexpenisvely.

He works with his SO (I guess) Harriet and no other helpers, so they don't have
a lot of overhead. They did an excellent job and picked up well as promised.

Over the winter something expanded strangely and some shingles curled up. They
came out to fix them quickly and at no charge as soon as we called. And finally,
the roof was damaged (slightly) by a falling tree during Hurricane Bob. They
came quickly to give an estimate for insurance, and then once again quickly to
do the work. (It was $50! Do you believe that anyone can do anything for that?)

Anyway, I think they also do interior work and general handy-person stuff during
the winter when roofing is problematical.

And finally, they are listed in the phone book, but they recently moved and their
number is changed. Calling the old number gives you the new one, though.

I second the recommendation for East Coast Gutters.

We had the front of the house done and it was finished within 1 week
from the day I called. They were almost the lowest price of all the

        perfectly.

I had trouble meeting Jules to sign the contract so he just did the

For 69 foot of gutters and two 13 foot & one 23 foot down spout, I

We have a new house, and had water problems in the basement.
I heard about East Coast, and called them. Jules Menard came
out, and looked at the job site. He came with color samples,
and we found that he had a grey and blue that very closely
matched my vinyl and trim colors.

Because we wanted colored gutters, he had to special order the
material, and it would take a week to order. We agreed on time
and money, and about a week later, they came out and installed
them. I was out of town, and my wife didn't notice the new
gutters until Jules called that night asking about the work done.

	From the EAST COAST flyer:

		- New 5" Gutters
		- Available in a Variety of Colors
		- Completely Seamless
		- 25 years guarantee on material
		- 5 years guarantee on labor
		- In the business for over 10 years

Conclusion:	work done on time, in time, good quality.

Another recommendation for ACTION ROOFING of Lowell, MA. They stipped
and reshingled the farmer's porch roof (overhang for walkway) on the
front of our house. This was to fix a problem created by another
roofer who had stripped and shingled the houise 5 years ago.

Action Roofing always returned by calls the same day. He spent over
an hour at my house discussing the problem and offerred several
alternative fixes. He also called by attention to some chimney work
that needs attention.....he also does "repointing" of brickwork. His
bid was several hundred dollars less than other roofers (also found in
    Notes).

They did the job yesterday. The roof looks great. And there was no scrap
or debris left on the lawn or driveway.

As a point of interest, it seems a busy time right now: two outfits
returned a no-bid based on being too busy to take on more work right now.
2027.54WMOIS::SANTOROTue Sep 28 1993 15:5418
At least you got a no-bid call back. I called 6 roofers and only 3
actually called me back. One was Action...they are extremely
responsive and seem reasonably priced so we went with them. They even
put up with over a week of my wife not being able to make up her mind
on color and type (3 tab or Architectural) by bringing out samples and
pointing out features on roofs in the area.

They should be starting on Thursday...I hope. After yesterday's
downpour we have some serious wet spots on the ceiling in our bedroom.

That brings up a question: should I worry about the integrety of the
ceiling after being so wet? It is only in 4 locations close to
each other, 2 the size of a basketball, 1 a softball, 1 along a seam
about 3 feet long. I've pulled up all the insulation in the attic and
assuming no more water, it should dry up within a few days. Anything
    else that can/should be done?

    -Greg
2027.55REFINE::MCDONALDshh!Tue Sep 28 1993 16:0912

If the ceiling shows no sign of sagging when it dries out, you are
safe to assume that it has kept its integrity. Note that you should
probably plan on repainting the ceiling. The stains will eventually
appear. Paint BIN (or any good white shellac) over the stained areas
and then repaint... or the stains will most likely appear through
    the paint.

    Trust me. I know the pains of a leaky roof first hand. ;-{

That's probably 175 Naticook Rd. That's listed as one of his

Is the written estimate still only considered an estimate after

Also once the work is completed, how long should I wait til

request for paperwork before I hand over the final check?

I know I know, I should of asked before they started, but

I got an estimate from Dipietro Roofing. He came this morning right on
time at 6:45. The leaks I have are to a sun-room addition that was
added some 7-8 years ago. The pitch on the roof is really shallow. He
said that the rolled asphalt is probably the problem, basically that
stuff isn't good to put on roofs. He would overlay a rubber roof on it
for $500, or take off the old stuff and put the rubber roof on for
$700, my choice. The roofing area, my guess, is about 20'x15', though
he would go a few feet up from where the sun-room roof meets the
    regular roof of the house.

I've never had someone work on a roof for me. Is this a good price? Are
there things I should ask him about or be wary of? (He said warrenty on
the rubber roof is 5 yrs.)

2027.64LEZAH::WELLCOMESteve Wellcome MRO1-1/KL31 Pole HJ33Wed Nov 10 1993 14:179
The price seems more or less reasonable, considering that it
will probably take two guys a day or two. I do question the
idea that rolled asphalt roofing isn't good to put on roofs.
Where else would you put it??? About 10 years ago I put rolled
asphalt on a small section of my roof that has a very shallow
    pitch, and it's been fine.
The rubber roof may be better - I don't have any experience with
those - but I've got no complaints about double coverage rolled
    asphalt roofing.
2027.65HYDRA::BECKPaul BeckWed Nov 10 1993 16:154
Double coverage roll roofing does work okay, but it's got a limited
lifetime; ours is shot after only about 14 years. A rubber roof may last
longer (dunno), and would have the added advantage that if an airplane
comes down on your house, it'll just bounce...

2027.67Byron Lohnes - Roofing/Siding - Plympton, MADECSIM::GRODSTEINTue Nov 30 1993 14:0219
I hired Byron Lohnes, of Guaranteed Contracting in Burlington.
I am in Arlington. Byron is south of Boston (in Plympton), but traveled
up to Arlington for me.

It was a busy time of year, and I had trouble getting some quotes from other
contractors, but Byron came out promptly to give a quote. His quote was
significantly lower than the others I received.

The job took almost a week because of the amount of work and because of several
rainy days. When this happened he made sure to only strip as much as he

2027.76Lemon Law for roofs?NETRIX::michaudJeff Michaud, PATHWORKS for Windows NTTue Jan 18 1994 02:5642
Is there a Lemon Law in NH for roofs? I got my roof done
by .56 in Nov. and the first good rain the roof leaked
in the area of the chimney stack (which is doubly bad
since if it were to leak too much water can get down to
my electrical subpanel). I called Cliff and he came and
got up on the roof (and I got up with him) and he put
tar over the tab in the shingle and blamed it on his
hired hand he had working with him (who he claims he's
	since fired).

A couple of light rains and no problem, but again the next
time a good rain came, it again leaked around the same area.
Cliff came again, not too happy this time, and put even
more tar up there. No leak since then, but it hasn't rained
since then, only snowed. Well ......

Tonight the snow turned to a good rain so I went up to
the attic to look again, and the quick look looked ok,
until I got closer, and it's STILL leaking up there!!!!
It looks like a smaller leak than before, but then again,
maybe it's due to the rain not being that strong (sounds
like ice/sleet mixed in with it).

The old roof (2-3 layers of asphalt shingles over probably
the original 130 year old wood shingles) never leaked, not
even around the chimney (though there was signs it had leaked
at some point in the past).

To me it doesn't sound like piling up a bunch of tar up
there is the right solution, it sounds like something wasn't
done right in the first place. What are my options if the
original roofer fails to correctly fix a less than 3 month
old roof after three (3) tries? I can always shell out
more money to get a [hopefuly] more qualified roofer to
fix it, but would I have any chance of reclaiming it in
small claims court against the original roofer?

This is the same roofer who left my front door wide open
twice at the end of his work day, and who I caught jumping
a fence to steal a 2x4 out of my neighbors yard. And who
also has told me 4 times that he's going to send me the
Bird warrentee, and a copy of the bill for the the dumpster.

No amount of roofing cement is going to make up for faulty chimney flashing
. The flashing should be integral with the mortar joints in order to work.

Sounds like your contractor ripped off the original lead flashing.

Better call a mason and have the chimney re-flashed.

> Hope you stripped those old shingles off before adding more

Yes, the roofs were stripped down to the wood planks
and then sheathed with 3/8" cdx. it was quite a mess!

> No amount of roofing cement is going to make up for faulty chimney flashing.
> The flashing should be integral with the mortar joints in order to work.
> Sounds like your contractor ripped off the original lead flashing.

he did keep the original flahsing, as least on the 3 sides
i can see from the street. it is very possible he screwed
up and removed the piece of flashing on the high side
(the side it leaks from) because I can't see the lead
from the inside of the attic either on that part.

> Better call a mason and have the chimney re-flashed.

the mason should be able to do this w/out needing to rip
	off any shingles?

Thanks for the feedback, it's quite useful!

Yes, he should only have to pull a couple of nails near the chimney so that
he can tuck the flashing far enough under the shingles.

Of course, when he sees it he's going to try and convince you to replace
the entire chimney instead of just the top.

around (my area). Before seeking out other estimates, I want to know if
this sounds like a reasonable ballpark price. It seemed a little on the
    high side to me.
He'll be replacing the roof on my two-car attached garage. The
estimate includes removal of the old shingles, etc., hauling it away,
removing and replacing clapboards where the garage meets the house in
order to install flashing, the roofing paper, 3 feet of that rubber
stuff to prevent ice damn backups, and then 25-year shingles. The

The price sounds reasonable assuming you have a pretty big garage.

The best way to tell is get 2 more estimates and see where they fall.
Never go with one estimate no matter how highly recommended the contractor
is.

BTW, If you are looking to save money you might save 40% by not having them
strip the old shingles off. If there is only one layer and it is not badly
cupped you could do it, especially since it is just the garage. However
they will have to install drip edge all around and if you have a non-white
trim it will have to be painted to match your current trim color.

You could also go with 20yr shingles but the little you'll save isn't worth
it.

I just went through a little hassle with a roofer who stripped and re-roofed
my 70+ y.o. house. He followed the common Boston-area practice of lifting
up the old chimney flashing, installing new aluminum step flashing underneath,
then pulling the old flashing down and sealing it top to bottom with roofing
cement. Basically using the old flashing as a counter flashing. This
technique has a major disadvantage - if the counter flashing leaks along the
top, or cracks at a high point along the base, the fact that the counter
flashing is sealed at the base creates a dam effect that results in
water backing up and leaking through the step flashing underneath.

I believe that old flashing should never be reused unless is is completely
intact and securely anchored at the top in mortar. If it is pulled down
over new step-flashing, it should be neatly trimmed at the base and never
sealed.

So whatever roofer you go with - ask him what he intends to do with the
old flashing. I learned my lesson, for the next time I hire a roofer.

    Another SJK Home Improvements ...

Steve and his crew re-roofed two additions on my house 12x24
and 15x15. They are nearly flat and had been a constant leaking
problem. Steve arrived *early* to give an estimate, gave me the
estimate on the spot, and stuck to his estimate after volunteering
    to do some extra work.

His price was higher than the other 2 estimates we received (the 3rd
never sent an estimate) but we the other 2 estimates were recommending
what we considered an inferior job both in materials and workmanship.
For example, Steve was very concerned about getting rid of any rotted
wood that was around due to the previously poor job. This included
part of the siding on the main house that came down and met the
    roofs on the additions.

We went with Steve because we wanted to feel confident that the job
was getting done right and we believe it was. The clean-up was
    also meticulous.

Steve does general carpentry as well which was one of the advantages
of having him deal with our house that needed a more than roofing
    skills.

Steve is located in Amherst, NH but had no problem commuting to
Auburn, NH to do our work. We're seriously considering having him

It may have changed in the last few years. When my dad wanted to paint
his house a light yellow, about 5 years ago, he was told he had to get
a permit. As far as I know, he's not in the historic district. Oh,
    well, just another rathole.

re:.7 Those rules have been in place at least since 1963 when my father
was on the Historic District Commission. The District currently
includes portions of The Great Road, South Road, North Road and Springs
Road. Other roads which come within the 200 ft of the center of these
roads could be effective. The map of the district is posted at Town
Hall as well as the regulations. If your dad's address was on any of
the those roads that could be the case. On the other hand he could have
gotten the information from a neighbor that didn't like the color.
Official information is really easy to get.

Here's another strong endorsement of Steve Krol, who we
hired to reroof our Gambrel last fall.

His estimate was timely and on the low end of the four bids
we obtained. He and his co-worker consistently showed up
on time and finished the job on time. We were quite pleased
with their work, which included 6' of Bird's Water and Ice
(where we had had lots of ice damage from the previous winter),
30 yr architects shingles, re-cementing cracks in chimney,
replacing rotted sills, rain diverters above the doors, and
installation of ridge and hick vents.

I asked Steve if he had any ideas of how I could get rid of a
bunch of garbage (30 tires, including 16 rimmed, car doors,
chassis, an enormous cast iron tub, etc, etc) that the previous
owner had left to rust and rot in the woods in back. For a
hundred bucks more, he rented a humongous dumpster in which I
was able to get rid of all that crap.

While he lives in Amherst NH, he had no problem crossing the
state line to do our job in Dunstable, MA.

2027.108Bad experience with DEAN'S SIDING & WINDOWS.12GAGE::DERIEGetting there $5 at a time...Fri Dec 15 1995 15:4021
I would *NOT* recommend using Dean's Siding and Windows, Nashua NH, for any
work. He does roofing, skylights, gutters, siding, doors.

On Oct 15th my parents contracted Dean Donnell to replace a roof on their
home. They paid him for half the job up front, with the remainder to be
 paid upon completion.

The check was cashed and cleared a couple of days later. About a week later
he dropped off some materials (worth about 1/3rd of what they paid him).

It is now 2 months later and he has not returned. After repeated attempts
by my parents to get him to respond or return the money, they have filed a
claim in small claims court with the hopes that they can recover the money.

At this point, it looks as though they will never see their money, nor will
they have the roof they wanted installed before winter.

If anyone would like more information, please contact me at foundr::derie,
 or dtn 285-3280.

2027.140Leaking flashing or roofWRKSYS::HILLMon Apr 01 1996 23:1316
I have two dormers with a skylight between them on the roof of my colonial.
Somewhere in the area of the skylight there is a leak, but as there are so
many roofline changes in this area, and the skylight, it is difficult to
determine the source of the leak.

I had the whole roof reshingled about six years ago, and it has never been
right (contractor went out of buisness so I couldn't go after him), so I could
believe it is just flashing, or bad shingling.

Anyway, it is in urgent need of a permanent and "proper" fix.

I would appreciate any recomendations for suitable contractors that cover
the Marlborough MA area.

Thanks,
	Paul

2027.149Express Roofing - Chelmsford, MAPOWDML::RASMUSSENThu Jun 06 1996 18:0228
Here's a recommendation for a roofer in Chelmsford. We went with
Express Roofing last year and were very pleased.

We called 3 roofers for quotes. Two of the guys showed up and gave us
verbal quotes. The guy from Express showed up, gave us a typed-up
quote (he had stopped by during the day, when we weren't home), a package
of sample shingles to choose from with all the info on how long the
various type will last, and a list of people to call for references. He
    was very professional.

I called a few of the people from his list of past customers, and
everyone raved about the job he'd done for them.

On the day he told us he'd do the roof, we were woken up at 6:00 AM by
pounding on the roof. He and his crew were up there and were working
away already. He finished the roof in one day (we only had another
layer of shingles put on, didn't involve removing any).

A year later, and we occassionally find a small piece of roofing
shingle in the yard, but he left our yard as neat as when he'd shown
    up.

If you're from Chelmsford, or drive through residential areas, you're
sure to see his sign occasionally. We see the sign all over town now
    that we're aware of it.

2027.154Looking for a slater -- roof work neededTNPUBS::BURNSWed Aug 28 1996 17:5412

Our 100 year old house has a slate roof with some very worn copper
valleys that are in need of repair. A couple of roofers in the Acton area
have advised us that we may need to remove the slate (and the shingles
under the slate) and then put on some plywood sheathing and a new
asphalt roof. The price they're quoting to do this work seems quite
    high -- ~9K.

I guess I'd like to talk to someone that's been through this before.
I really like the slate on the roof and would hate to remove it if I
    don't have to.
2027.155PACKED::ALLENChristopher Allen, Ladebug, dtn 381-0864Thu Aug 29 1996 14:2110
You should get opinions from roofers who are experienced with slate (I don't
know if the roofers you contacted are or aren't). Your desire to preserve your
slate roof is good and you should probably talk to roofers who have similar
interests.

There's an old note in this topic that describes a situation similar to yours.
There's a recommendation in that note too. You also might try contacting the
Old House Journal, see note 5.

Boston yellow pages.

That price is grand theft. I bought a 1890 Victorian in Haverhill, MA
with my brother. He still lives there and owns the house till this day.
When we looking at the house the realter said the roof leaked, and it
needed a new roof. Well it only needed new valley's. The copper wore
out. There are many roofers in the Haverhill are, there should be a
bunch in the boston area that work with slate.

Anyway the roofer we selected ( no idea now, was 16 years now )
inserted new aluminuim valleys right over the old ones in most areas.
They only took out the copper where necessary. They also replaced
some of the slate where needed. Back then that cost about $500.00.

As a matter of fact, a neighbor of my brother has his entire slate
roof removed, and re-roofed. We spent half a saturday grabbing as many
slates from the dumpster as we could for backups. They were in perfect
    condition.
