Mark Pilotte in Hudson, MA 562-9761

He has a day job, (for now), but painting/wallpapering is what he really likes
to do. Last summer he painted the interior of most of our 4 bedroom house,
starting by steaming off several coats of ugly wallpaper (even on the
ceiling). He patched, he primed, and he painted. Also wallpapered the
kitchen and one bathroom. The house came out great. We had 3 painters bid on
the job (the other 2 were recommended full-time professionals) and Mark had
more interest in the job, and a better idea of what he wanted to do. He was
also a bit less expensive. We were very happy with his work and
conscienousness. We even had him back last fall to paint our basement, and
result came out better than we thought it would partially due to Mark's ideas.
My sense is that he is probably just as skilled at exterior or specialty
work. I know he will be honest about what he can/can't do if you call him.

No, he's not a relative, and I don't get a cut for this. But he did a very
good job, and I would use him again.

Not familiar with the name you mention, but we were very happy with
the work done with Mark Stone. I don't have his number, but he
lives in Maynard, on Powder Mill Road, I believe.

He did our house, which involves a lot of scraping, changing the
color of the house, and two coats on an addition. He and two other
guys spent about three days scraping, so I'd say he did a thorough
    job. Cost us $2100.

2023.4Ray Rondeau = Manchester NHBRAT::GERMANNTue Mar 08 1988 17:1115
In the Manchester, NH area, Ray Rondeau is an excellent painter.
He painted my house last year. The house is about 80 years
old and we are in an area of a lot of mildew (I think that
is most of NH). Ray washed, scraped, sanded, primed and then
painted the entire house. It looks marvelous. I went from
an all white house to blue-grey with white trim and gray
shutters. It was alot of work. He took 2 weeks. As of
now there is no evidence of the peeling I had previously and
    everyone admires it.

He has also done some interior work. Again, very thorough
and concientious. He does the little extras that most don't
    do.

    Another happy Mark Stone customer.

Our house was BADLY peeling; it had not been painted for 15+ years
(I bought it 2 years ago, so it wasn't my fault, :-)

Several of the contractors I called wouldn't even give an estimate--it
was too much work for them.

Mark was very reasonable; his crew showed up on time, worked all
day and then cleaned up the site each evening.

    Mark does an excellent job.

would recommend H.R. Healy first as he has more experience. On

Paints cause he enjoys doing it, and does the job right. He did the
interior of our house - including ripping off wallpaper, patching, and
painting (3 coats some places) - did quite a good job. VERY
knowledgable, and reasonable cost. I have to assume he approaches his
exterior work the same way.

It's not very often that we find a contractor that fulfills our
expectations of quality, timeliness and competitive pricing. It
is for this reason that I want to take the time to reiterate a
recommendation from another DECcie (Brian Sussel) for Oberlin Home
Improvements (Wayne Denio). He did some plastering at my house
and I am pleased with every aspect of his work. He is doing some
wallpaper hanging for my in-laws and I believe they are also pleased
    with how it's coming out.

He does wallpaper hanging, painting, plastering, etc. He can be
    reached at (617)853-7618.

    Brian, thanks for the recommendation.

is great for cleaning houses, and for stipping paint off of houses.
This machine works very good, and cuts down the time it takes for

2023.18Goodridge Painting, Merrimack NH4GL::ASCHNEIDERAndy Schneider - DTN 381-2475Tue May 10 1988 16:4022
This week, we had our house painted by Goodridge Painting, from
Merrimack NH. They did an excellent job! Tim Goodridge (the
owner) gave us an estimate in February for the job - one
number for 1 coat of solid color stain, and another number
for two coats. When they came out to do the job, they found
out that the cedar shakes on our house were extremely dry,
and had to do 3 coats of primer BEFORE they started putting
the actual color on the house. The worked 3 days on it, and
it came out beautifully. He had to put much more in terms of
labor and materials into the house than he had anticipated, but
still stuck to his original estimate. Almost unheard of these
days! They do all of their work by brushing, not spraying (although
the first coat of primer was sprayed to get into the small crevaces
in the cedar shakes). There was no mess after the job was complete,
and they left very few overbrush marks on windows and/or doors.
I highly recommend them - and tell Tim I sent you.

I'm going to go with Jim Soloway. He came immediately to do the
estimate, quoted a good price, gave me a written quote broken down
into prices for each task, seemed to know quite a bit about cleaning
and preserving natural wood siding, and can do the job reasonably
soon. QUITE a difference between him and the other JOKERS that
came to give me estimates (or never showed up).

"Hate to Paint/Stain Inc." (see .23) just finished re-painting the outside
of my house in Nashua. The house was dark brown, and is now off-white.
I am quite pleased with the results. Jim Soloway and his crew did
a thorough job, with good attention to detail. A couple of minor
snags were quickly resolved to both our satisfactions.
The "little extras" and general advice were especially useful for an
inexperienced homeowner...

Well, it looks like I picked a good painting contractor! Hate to
Paint in Derry (Jim Solloway) have started working in my house today.
They are painting __all__ the trim in the house (currently bare
    wood) plus second-coating some walls.

I haven't seen any of their work yet, but so far I'm very impressed
with his customer service -- he's quick on returning phone calls,
sent his proposal right away and called to see if we had any questions,
shows up right on time. All thing which typically frustrate me
VERY MUCH in dealing with contractors.

I'll put in another note when he gets done with the job (which he
    promised to finish before Thanksgiving).

Ok, Hate to Paint, Inc. is done with the job (right on schedule)
and I'm _very_ satisfied. Jim Solloway, the owner, works right
along with his crew on every job. I had them paint _all_ the woodwork
and trim in my house. Since the house is new construction, it was
all bare wood and required primer, nail-filling, sanding, and two
finish coats. They also second-coated all the walls in the house.

They do an extremely neat, professional job, and I would be happy
    to recommend them.

They're in Derry (phone # in previous replies), but were willing
to travel 45 min. to Hollis.

Reading these recent entries has reminded me that I never followed
up with a report on Jim Soloway's work. As with the previous notes,
I am more than completely satisfied. The work was done quickly
and neatly. He used more CWF than he had estimated, but refused
to add the cost to my bill. He replaced several damaged shingles
for free (I supplied the shingles), and painted all sorts of stuff
that was not in the original agreement (hinges, door-latch handles,
weathervane, well-head housing, ...). I get the feeling that if
my wife was in the yard they would have painted her too!

BTW, he and his helpers refused to take beer when offered.

The quality of his work was very good -to- excellent. He was
particularly careful about not getting paint on anything that shouldn't
be painted (plants, deck, etc.). He splattered a little paint on our
doorbell buttons, but I think we can live with that.

His price was about in the middle of other quotes that we had gotten.
When we factor in the quality and care of his work, we are sure that we
got a great deal and are very, very satisfied.

Jim lives in Leominster. I know he works as far south as Worcester; I
don't know how far he goes in any other direction.

In the Worcester area, an excellant wallpaper reference is NIAN
WALLPAPERING (508-757-4471), which is a 1 1/2 person operation run by
Anita whateverherlastnameisbecauseijustcallherAnita with help from her
son who is learning the business (that means he gets the grunt work
    like stripping).

Anyway, she is papering our addition and parts of the existing
structure, and does an extremely careful and well planned job. She did
a 20x30 room with 11' cathedral ceilings by herself (I tried to get my
wife to tape it so I could watch but ...) - and you cannot find the
seams unless you start measuring from the edge to where you know the
just have to be! Everything is perfectly straight. Very little
wastage - my wife says that the first 3 hours on the above room were
spent just measuring and holding up paper and more measuring, etc.
There is a border along the edge, and the paper on the wall was placed
so that at no point in the room does part of the overall patter "peak"
out from the bottom of the border (messing up that artsy look we were
just striving for to no end!!!!).

Her cost is approximately $12/single roll for labor, which is what
everyone else wanted that we called.

Can anyone give a recent recommendation for a painter in the Townsend area?
After the work we've put in so far, we've decided that it just isn't going
to get done this year if we have to do it ourselves. (So much for DIY.) We're
interested in quality, reliability, and price; speed is secondary. Most of
the references in here already for this area are either old or indifferent as to
quality.

Does anyone have experience with Colonial Paiting of Pepperell?

I had him do two rooms - one kitchen/hallway, and one
livingroom/stairwell. He did a good job, caulking trim and
painting ceilings as well - promptly and neatly.
I was initially a bit hesitant to use him because the price
seemed quite low and he seemed young - but he provided a list
of references who said that Chris had been painting full-time
for years and did a good job, especially for the price.

Jim is completing the painting of our house and shed today and we are
    very pleased with the results.

We have a two story house the lower story being a walk out basement.
The upper floor has brick around 3 sides about 1/2 way up. There are
13 windows above the brick. The front has wrought iron supports badly
in need of paint around a porch. In addition we have a new shed that
had been primed but needed a coat of paint to match the house. The house
is almost 48'x48' and the shed is 14'x16'. The foundation, much of
which is exposed along one side and completely in the front, needed
painting badly, it also needed scraping. The original color of the
house was white and we wanted to change it to brick red.

We set up an appointment for a free estimate and Jim was there on time.
He offered suggestions and explained how he would approach our
"problem", a very dirty, bug covered, house. He would clean the entire
house prior to painting with a solvent that would properly prepare the
surface. He would scrape those sections needing it and would caulk all
the seams in the wood, mostly under the eves, prior to painting. He
also guaranteed that the paint would cover, even if it meant that he
had to apply two coats. He appeared to know his stuff but with all the
comments we were sure his price would be too high. The final tally, when
we decided to have him do the shed too, was $1200. That was less than
I paid for a single story little ranch in 1982! We hired him.

Jim's work has been excellent. We leave him alone all day and he just
keeps at it. We have a new deck and light fixture and there is not a
speck of paint on either. He did have to apply two coats of paint and
it looks wonderful, better than we ever anticipated. He gets there
before my husband leaves for work and always gets any updates we may
have, like gee the lower windows don't look as good as we thought they
would with the trim color, would you repaint them red - sure says he,
no problem and no more money! He works when the weather allows it, he
doesn't take risks with the rain, which may take longer than other
painters, I'm not real sure, but we have no problem with the time it is
taking considering the amount of work. He started last tuesday, and
worked all the rest of the week and saturday morning so we could open
all the windows so they wouldn't get painted shut (nice idea on his
part). He painted Monday this week and is completing it today, we just
    went over the final details.

    I highly recommend Jim.

Tim restained our house last summer, and did a bang-up job for a low price.
His number is
	603 424-2736
I recommend highly him.

He is the only painter we interviewed who would guarantee his work. He was very
clear about what he could guarantee and what he could not (the house surface
was improperly prepared originally, and an inappropriate stain used on the
horizontal surfaces).

Working with Tim is pretty painless. This spring I called him up, told him
about some new problems (all due to original bogiod surface prep) and one day
he came out and fixed it. We are very happy.

For those of you who care, our house has semi-solid stain on unprimed smooth
side out cedar clapboards. It was peeling and flaking in spots last year. Tim
explained that he could scrape, prime, and stain, and guarantee that scraped
areas would not peel again. Anything he couldn't scrape, he couldn't guarantee.
He promised to keep coming back, every year, to take care of any new peeling
spots. As time goes on, there will be fewer and fewer because a fair amount of
the original stain did adhere, and we will slowly but surely catch all that did
not adhere. You can't tell that the spots that were redone this year are new.
The match is perfect.

Tim's explanation of our problems were very clear, sounded rational, and based
on our experience correct. A marked contrast from the other interviewees, and
the reason he got the job. (Being the low bidder didn't hurt either)

For some strange reason parts of the garage were primed. Most of the house was
not. Who knows what lurks in the minds of builders.

For an outstanding job painting/staining interior or exterior and
probably the best prices you can get, call Dan Snyder at 603 886-3475.
He lives in Hudson and will come to Mass. He did our whole house
exterior with stain, 2 coats, by himself, was meticulous with his work,
did repairs to the siding where it was needed and was always reliable.
On days where he felt the weather was not conducive to the stain taking
hold, he would not work (the ultimate sign of a pro!), even though it
meant holding him up on completing his job. He knows quite a lot, and I
suggest that when he gives you an assessment, you take it seriously.

Dan may not seem as outgoing when you first meet him as some of the
others we got quotes on from the Digital notes, but don't judge a book
by its cover. (One guy quoted us $1000 more for one coat!!) He's
quite a nice fellow with 5 kids (1 undergoing leukemia therapy) and he
really needs the money. This part he didn't tell us until after we
hired him. Dan's been painting around 20 years. He takes great pride
in his work. We learned about him from this file (See Note 2023.27).

                    -< John Dewey, Littleton, MA 486-0317 >-

I hired a fellow named John Dewey this past winter to do a bedroom for
me. The room was a difficult one and he did far beyond what I expected.
He has 15 years of experience, is a perfectionist and it shows.

He was low bid ($150 labor + $15 for paste), I supplied the paper.
The room is a 12' X 14', that has a lot of beams, nooks, trim and
built-in furniture to work in and around. The a sloping ceiling
up to 10' also made this job a challenge.

That price also included adding a border around the perimeter of entire room
and around ceiling. He also did the switch plates.

It was well worth it. In fact I gave him an extra $25.

the painting. College Pro did it for $417.

Second, the quality: these are college kids. They do not take as
much care as a professional painter will. Still, the quality was
    quite acceptable.

Third, time on the job: they took longer than expected to finish
the job. They had spent the entire day painting another house in
my neighborhood, then came at night to do the interior of two of
my rooms. These kids were tired, and it showed. They had to quit
early and come back a second night, when they worked right up 'til
    eleven p.m..

Fourth, dependability: they didn't show when they were supposed to.
They committed themselves to do the job on a weekend and waited
until the day before the painting was to start to line up painters.
No painters were available, so they had to come during the week to
    do the job.

All in all, I'd sign them up again. The work was satisfactory,
reasonably priced, and they were very congenial.

My wife and I STRONGLY recommend Dan Sullivan, of Framingham, if you're
looking for an expert painter at a very low cost. We hired Dan to paint
several rooms in our home. He did such an excellent job that we
subsequently rehired him to strip some wallpaper and prime the walls.
If Digital stock ever climbs above $40/share, we will probably have him
paint the outside of our home too.

He is now working in the Fitchburg/Leominster area but will travel farther

his work has always been very good. He is very reasonably priced.

One other thing, Mark use to work for Digital and did this as his side line

We have had two painting contractors look at our house and never get
back to us with estimates. (guess it was a little too intimidating).

This will be the second winter that the cedar siding has never been
treated. I'm starting to get a little concerned.

Does anyone have recommendations for painters in the Merrimack area
and at this point, is it too late to do it this year and should we just
try to get it done early next spring.

For what ever it's worth, we've also had a general contractor in to

I got Dan's name from this notes file, and had him come and do some
interior painting work (walls and ceilings) in my house. He was
excellent -- started on time, ended on time, did a thorough job, and
most of all cost seemed most reasonable. I needed to get things done
in a short time because I am having my house assessed. Dan worked
long hours (one day he worked 14 hours straight) to finish on time.
He was also nice enough to clean up the house after he was done.
In fact, I have decided to have him come and do some additional work
in my house.

I reccommend him (see notes .57 and .27).

I'd like to have your comments on the following that happened to us
over the weekend:

We're planning to paint our house and have been asking for estimates
from a couple of different painters. On Sunday one of the painters (lets
call him P) called us back.

P had visited our house some weeks ago to take a look and give us an
estimate. At the time he talked to my husband about the work, and
proceeded to scribble the estimated amount on the back of his
business card.

For several reasons we had decided to use a different painter to
do the paint job for us, and my husband told P so on the phone.
P talked a long time about what a great job he was doing and also
mentioned that he was a licensed painter in MA. P claimed that he really
was fully booked for the season, and did not care that much whether he
got the job or not. P proceeded to warn my husband for all the
unlicensed people traveling the roads looking for paint jobs.

He described a possible scenario where a licenced painter who had
been looking at our house, and not gotten the job, would see our house
be painted by somebody else, (possibly by an unlicensed painter). The
painter could inform the MA authoroties who would come and investigate,
find the work being done without a license and suddenly we would stand
there without our house painted and winter soon upon us.

Sounds like a threat?

Well, we're now more convinced than ever that we will not use P for
any jobs on our house.

Has this ever happened to you?

/Malin

2023.93Happened to my painterSISDA::BWHITEWed Sep 07 1994 19:3115
When my Victorian was painted 6 years ago, I hired a professional
painter who happened to live across the street. Based on what he told
me , here is what happened: In order to use ladders & staging as a
painter, in MA you have to have a riggers license. A state inspector
came to our house while he was painting, asked for his license - he had
one previously but had let it expire - the cost of a new license and
the associated fines were approx. $1200 which he had to pay.
He finished the house (and did a great job) - but I could see how this
could force some painters to quit. (there is also a "ripple" effect
here - if the painter has helpers, they will check to see if they have
Workman's comp insurance, etc. etc. and the cost to the painter could
    rise!!)
How do the inspectors know where to look??? Unhappy competitors...

This is a recommendation for

	Knowlton Painting and Construction
	tel: 508-448-2649

Gary Knowlton's business base is in Groton Ma. He lives in Southern NH.
Gary has painted hundreds of homes in the Groton area. He is currently
painting new construction in Concord, Ma. Apparently, he is quite willing
to travel.

Our experience with Knowlton Painting was overwhelmingly positive.
Gary painted our home over a 3 day period. Two weeks prior to that time,
he prepped the house by scraping and power washing. He and his crew are
hardworking, honest, professional and decent. He kept us informed
of any changes in his plan, was accessible during the painting process
and went out of his way to work with us. When it came to paying the bill,
he didn't quibble over minor alterations, but instead stuck to the
original proposal. And he seemed genuinely grateful for the work.
In exchange, we got a beautiful and professional paint job at a very
competitive price.

I highly recommend Knowlton's Painting if you are considering getting
your home painted.

He wallpapered my dining room a few weeks ago. Showed up

Dan just did some interior painting for us (about 1/2 the house)
and I would highly recommend him. He also does some specialty painting
such as sponge painting and rag rolling. We had him sponge
one room, rag roll another and the rest was just regular painting.

He is extremely patient and will make up large samples for the
specialty painting so you can get a good idea of how it's going
to look. We were having trouble coming up with a color combination
for the rag rolling that we had done and he made about 7 or 8 samples
until he came up with one we liked. He also has a large number of
samples that you can look through to get ideas of what you might
    want to have done.

He painted both the walls and woodwork. He did an excellent job,
cleaned up after himself, moved all the large furniture out of the
way if necessary. I though the work was reasonably priced as well.
We plan to have him back in the fall to finish up the rest of the
    house.

He does exterior painting as well. We haven't hired him for that,
but I'm sure he would do a good job.

We just had our house painted. I'd called a few of the people
recommended in this notes file but no one never got back to me.
Since Certa Pro (I'd found out about them through a mailer they
sent) were the only ones to call back and come out within a few
days for an estimate, they got the job. We had no idea how
much it would cost but their estimate was below the random
number that we had picked that seemed reasonable.

The crew ended up working over this past weekend and I happened
to be home the entire time. They were very professional; they
kept their radios down low, hardly talked to each other, barely
took any breaks. They worked very hard and got the house done
in three days (we have a ton of trim!).

to do some wallpapering. He called to tell me he could do the job but
that he was moving out of town.

He was suppose to come last week, but never showed up. When I called
his home his message on his answering machine said that due to a
family issue he had to leave town earlier than expected.

He never called us to tell us he was not coming. Needless to say,
    we were very disappointed.

We hired Rich to wallpaper several rooms in our house, one is the
hallway which is very high. He has done an excellent job!! His work
is exceptional and neat and he is very nice to deal with.

We got his name from the local paintstore and checked his references
before hiring him and are very happy we did. He gets a high
    recommendation.

He also does interior and exterior painting.

I had them in to wallpaper my living room; they were punctual,
efficient, and did a fantastic job. It's a large room, and they
stripped the old, patched and sanded a bit, sized, and installed
the new paper all in about 6 or 7 hours.

I don't have any experience with their painting.
2023.120wallpaper recommendation needed...AD::AD::MLADDad::mladd::mladdWed Jan 17 1996 15:169
I've got a cathedral ceiling entryway that I need wallpapered (already decided,
so I'm not changing my mind). I would like to get some recent (within the last
year or so) recommendations for wallpaper hangers in the Hudson, Stow, Acton,
etc... area. The job also requires a good deal of prepping and sealing before
the new wallpaper goes back on.

Thanks for all the help!

    Knowlton Painting, 508-448-2649 (Gary Knowlton)
    based in Groton, Ma.

I had Gary and his crew paint my basement walls and stain
ALL the woodwork (over 500 sq foot room). I had a need to
get all of this done in ONE DAY. Gary said he could do it,
I'd previously had him paint our house (with great results),
so I decided to believe him. Well, they showed up in the
morning and had it completed around 6 PM. Did a wonderful
job. No stain on the paint, no paint on the stain. I
    highly recommend them.

Their ad also says they do wallpaper, I believe. Although
I haven't had them do this type of work, I wouldn't hesitate.
I don't think that Gary would commit to do something that he
    couldn't do well.

Here's another recommendation for Dan Sloan, Sloan Painting Company
in the Nashua area. Tel: 603-880-3823.

We had some interior woodwork painted by Dan and his crew. Excellent
service and results. Pleasant to deal with. And a reasonable price too.

If you're considering doing any interior or exterior painting, I would
highly recommend John Doyle of Premier Painting. I believe his office
is in Sommerville, but he lives and works in the metrowest area.

John painted our house last summer, no small feat -- as it is a very
large Victorian-wanne-be, with 43 windows! His bid was in the middle
of 3 bids, his paint job was top quality, and he was a pleasure to work
with. Also, for any other work that we needed done (i.e., roofing) the
people he sent to were just as great as John.

He can be reached at: 508-264-9459 (home)

I would like to add John Dewey, wallpaper hanger out of Littleton. I
had a very small bathroom with marlite or formica on the majority of
the walls. He prepared them, put wallpaper lining on them and
wallpapered. He did an excellent job. You'd never know there was
formica paneling underneath the wall paper.

I would like to recommend Bill Kennerson Custom Painting of Nashua. He
just completed my house this past weekend
and did a Super job. First he washed the house, and then
replaced any necessary clapboards that had cracks in them.
He then applied the first coat (primer) wih a tint of the final color and
caulked any gaps that were visible on the house. He then applied a high
quality latex stain and the house looks brand new.
He also pressure washed my 8 year old deck and it looks like brand new...He
shows up on schedule and cleans up every
day...
Another neighbor who just moved in (& I hadn't met yet...and happens to be a
builder) was
very impressed with Bill's workmanship and has already hired him to paint his
house...

He is out of Sutton, MA but will bid jobs from Worcester to Sudbury!
