519.0. "Finishes - Sand/Water Blasting" by BARNUM::FOBRIEN () Tue Aug 25 1987 17:02

I just became aware of a paint removal process for the
exterior of houses called "waterblasting" using a very high
pressure stream of water to break the paint bond to the
shingles. Has anyone had any direct experience with this
process, particularly on cedar shakes? How much can I expect
to have to pay for this service and is the final result
suitable for applying a solid color stain?

        Thanks,
        Fred

"Practical Homeowner" or "Home Mechanix" or "The Family Handyman" or
"Penthouse" (oops!) had an article about this very subject not too
long ago. I'll see if I can find it for you. It didn't mention
prices as it was a DIY affair.

Taylor rental has them for about $70 a day. It is called
a pressure washer, it has a large single cylinder gas engine
and a hydraulic pump that puts out about 2200 psi ! You
plug in your garden hose and WATCH OUT !

It comes with 4 tips ranging from 0 to 30 degrees, the
0 degree tip can cut concrete, the 15 or 20 seems most
useful. The system is best for washing the house and
removing LOOSE paint. It can remove all the paint but
you will damage the wood, it will chew gouges in the shingles
if you are not careful. There is a separate attachment
that allows you to spray a mix of TCP from a pale that
will feed into the main stream.

It will do most of the work but you still have to go
back and scrape the loose edges. I don't think it is
what you want if you want to remove ALL the paint with out
	damaging the wood.

If you get it you will need a large station wagon or a truck.
It is on wheels and takes two people to load it.

PS: Watch out when using it on a ladder as it has about
a 20 pound kick (I nearly fell off !). Also, you and
the house will get very wet.

	Good Luck,

	Mike

I used taylor rental over a holiday weekend and did my whole
    house.(two story cape)
PROS: It was hot weather and I was soaked to the bone.(nice)
It does peel off the paint.(most of it)
Its fun for the first few hours.

CONS: Its is dangerous on a ladder.
It will allso remove clap boards.(go with the grain)
          You still have to scrap.
It uses a lot of water.(I ran my well dry)
Dont aim it at any one.(its like a gun)
          Wear eye protection.

Over all it saved me $$$ on hiring someone but I'll never go that
    route again!

519.4how to remove outside paint on trim?HELIX::MCGRAYThu Apr 07 1994 16:4819

What's the best way to sand down (remove LOTS of paint) the wood
on the outside of a front entrance to a house? I have about 1 foot
of painted wood surrounding the front door that needs to be
stripped and repainted, as well as the wood supports and facing
of the roof above the front door steps, and also wood gutters.

Do you use a paint stripper that you apply with a brush?
or do you use a heavy duty sander of some sort to remove the
paint? All I have is a little palm sander, which I'm sure won't
even make a dent. Do you rent sanders that will take off paint
from this area? (I've seen some on TV that look like mini
weed-wackers, with the high-speed rotating wires that take off
the paint). I can't imagine having to strip the paint with a liquid.

There are many different opinions on this one, as you can see from the
    directory listing below.

Chemical paint strippers tend to be pretty nasty to use.

I blush to admit that I've used that rotary stripping tool on wood. It
worked pretty well but some pieces had alternating grain layers whose
abrasion resistance was radically different, resulting in very
noticeable ridges that had to be sanded out later. The biggest problem
is concentration...it's easy to lose it and very quickly create a large
    hole in the wood.

The approach you did not mention is heat. You'll find many replies on
that subject below. In my opinion heat works best, and the possibility
of burning down the house adds a certain zest to the job.
