RE .2, .3, .5 - I realize that this is not the proper place
to ask this, but I've recently been trying to figure out exactly
HOW one goes about cross-posting notes from one conference to another.
Can someone shed some light on this for me (and possibly others)?
Also, where *would* be the proper place to ask questions such as
this? I've looked in Help in notes, and searched through Easynet_
Conferences, but haven't yet found the answer.
Sorry for my ignorance and for the intrusion, but thanks for
    any possible assistance!

    	RE .0 - Fascinating stuff!!

    Thanks again,
    Tom

3.11How to cross-postHANNAH::DCLDavid LarrickMon Nov 20 1989 00:1028
How to cross-post:

1. Get the author's permission. Doing so is a basic courtesy; there may also be
legal, trade-secret, or confidentiality issues that only the author knows
   about.

2. Read the note to be cross-posted.

3. EXTRACT filename

4. OPEN the conference you want to cross-post to

5. If you want to reply to an existing topic, read that topic and REPLY filename

6. If you want to start a new topic instead, WRITE filename

Where to discuss mechanical NOTES issues such as cross-posting:

I think there exists a conference someplace for this very purpose. Maybe
someone will post a pointer to it here. But in general, feel free to ask other
NOTERs for any help you need, in any suitable form. It's good to be concerned
about the right place to ask things, but more important to ask for the help
that you need.

Probably should be evms::spiers:garden

(just one ":" between "spiers" and "garden")

No, the path evms::spiers::garden is correct! spiers
is a hidden node and requests need to route thru evms

Try SHOW LOGICAL EVMS and SHOW LOGICAL SPIERS.
3.26QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centThu May 06 1993 13:436
I believe that the problem you are having is due to your system (I checked
WMOMAX) running a six-year old version of NOTES. Versions before V2.0
don't support the "hidden-node" syntax. Ask your system manager to install
a current version.

It wouldn't of helped. I had checked anchor yesterday and it
still the old area 55 address. Looks like the easynet folks
just corrected it within the last 24 hours ....

They also seemed to of made most of the adjustments to the
DEC: namespace. However Tallis appears to of moved from TAY
to AKO, but instead of deleting the .tay.tallis node object
and replacing it with a softlink, they forgot about it
(so anyone using the old fullname will still get 55.123).

Any model makers out there who might know a source for

Both of my little ones are into these. We've been adding to the

Today is my last day at Digital -- I'm off to pursue another opportunity -- and
I don't know how I'm going to get along without this conference. It's been
my constant companion during my first year of home ownership.

I know some of you must be into Compuserve, Prodigy, America Online, etc.
Are there forums out there that provide Home_Work like advice to non-DECies?
Which one's best? What do they cost?

(I've looked through "related conference" notes and title-searched for
"compuserve", "prodigy", and "internet" -- no luck. If a note's already
started on this topic, can you tell me where it is?)

AmericaOnline seems to have a lot of new forums opening up along these lines.

.1> I have the books, but they don't provide the "been there, done that"
personalized advice I get talking with fellow home handypersons. I
value the discussions and arguments as much as the solutions I find here.

2.> That raises another point. If the forums on compuserve, prodigy, etc are
being sponsored by Black & Decker, Dutch Boy, or True Value, for example,
will I be submitted to sales pitches by representatives of those companies?
Is the "advice" compromised by the sponsoring company's sales goals?

Anybody out there using these services?

The closest equivalence to Home_Work on the Internet is the newsgroup
misc.consumers.house.

Internet service providers range from free (if a university student or have
it at work) to a few bucks an hour (with a few $1-$2/hr) plus phone charges
if you have to reach them long-distance.

3.50Find a library with CDROM databasesSMURF::WALTERSFri Mar 18 1994 16:434

Many libraries have access to large CDROM-based databases of current
magazine articles. I've found these very useful and a very fast way
of getting info on a topic.

PRODIGY has an agreement with TOH and the Victory Garden. Both of
these (WGBH) shows have on-line experts/Bulletin Boards. Articles
are core features included with your membership. The Bulletin Boards
and Mail have additional fees (I think .06 cents/minute for BB, and
    .25 cents for mail).

I'm sure they other services have similar agreements as were
    mentioned previously.

         Good luck,
                   Mark

3.56conf triggers "invalid device name" from remote system?APLVEW::DEBRIAETue May 03 1994 17:4515

Wait, I mispoke. What I actually get is "Invalid device name"
when I try to open the conference.

I tried from another system and I can get in, so the problem
must be with my own system.

All my other usual conferences open fine. I only have a problem
with this one, even starting from scratch with a whole new
    	NOTES$NOTEBOOK.NOTE. I'm stumped.

Re: .4

You may be on to something - to access a notes conference using the
"pass-through" syntax (with two or more node names), you must be using
at least NOTES V2.0.

OK, I have it all straightened out now...

Ever try to fix something and everything broke? :-) I saw that I
had an old version of NOTES, and installed the new version 2.5
thinking that might be the problem. Then my PAK key was incorrect,
and I had no NOTES at all and couldn't even get back to here. I got
the new PAK key but then my old LICENSE version couldn't handle the
PAAM params, nor did it have a /remove option.

Anyway, I'm all set now and can get into gardening fine. Using an
older version of NOTES was the problem all right. Thanks for the
    	help...

For the whereabouts of notes conferences, the first place to check is
TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES. Please read notes 1.5 and 1.13 there first.

subscriber to access the "forum" (or whatever they call it).

A friend just sent this to me:

At Home Improvement Net Tips, you will discover ideas and products that
help you maintain and upgrade the value of your home. Net Tips gives you

complete. It also offers free how-to brochures and more detailed

If you truly have no idea how to check out an announcement in

Refer to note 1.5 and also 1.13 in that conference for tips - please also
read other replies to that topic.
