3-??-88 Hampton Jerry's voice was in its best form in years during this

Similarly, I think the relationship with David Grisman should also

i'd also suggest that we open this up to some not-actively-contributing
decheads... Slash, Little Shit, GerryG, Fog, Jum Hendersnap, Geoff Keller

the nominations so far:

5/2/70 "I Know You Rider" (Dead acoustic)

9/28/77 "Eyes" (Think that was the date. Seattle show)

3-??-88 Hampton the return of "To Lay Me Down"

??-93 albany Loser
?? first year in albany Terrapin with the jam on the end

I think I'd nominate Wharf Rat, 12-31-78

Deep Elem Blues, from Almost Acoustic.
Jerry's last song from Chicago as the last song on the tape.

509.32 | | STAR::ECOMAN::DEBESS | Wake Now, Discover... | Tue Jan 23 1996 12:43 | 44 |
| Did anyone nominate a Dark Star yet?!?
well then, my nomination is Dark Star from 3-28-73.
This is the Grateful Dead at it's finest - and I have a crisp copy of this -
you can distinctly hear what each band member plays as they go off into a
myriad of explorations...
sometimes tasteful tasty little licks that one or the other has been playing
around with on their own and now complemented by the other bandmembers in the
background - mosttimes it is all of them playing equally and off of eachother,
and just so beautifully...there is a great section of the most tasteful
feedback you are ever bound to hear (I kid you not) - I guess it's Phil
and Jerry playing along melodically. And Phil - he was the Beam of that era -
hoooooooow loooooooooow can yoooooooou possssssibleeeeeeeee gooooooooooooo 8-)
Bobby plays such interesting and such beautiful rhythm - it is a great treat for
the ears. Bill sounds like more than one drummer ;-) - lots of highhat(is that
what they're called) cymbols to make it light and airy. Keith plays some
tasteful lines in the background, sounding a lot like the same register as the
rhythm guitar, but they complement eachother so well. One couldn't do it
alone. (I really love the grand piano, much moreso than the organ - and I
know -they- loved the organ more, but I myself really love the sound of the
grand piano).
about a half hour into it ;-), the first words are sung. After Jerry sings
the verse, interestingly, the audience politely clap-clap-claps, as if they
have been listening to a piece of classical music, and then, the boyz go off
into their fun-with-toys section. Great stuff.
I read in Sandy Troy's biography of Jerry, that Jerry had been arrested
driving from Baltimore to Springfield, and had actually spent the night in
jail. This caught my eye, because the Springfield show was my first show.
I can remember the little blurb in the paper about him being arrested for
speeding, but it said nothing about drugs. Anyways, I think whatever strong
emotion Jerry was experiencing naturally would come out in his playing - a
negative experience for sure and yet the music is So High. Wonderful,
wonderful show. From Dark Star, they went into Eyes, which I would also
nominate, except that my tape cuts it off at the very end. But, definately,
there should be an Eyes from '73 - they were so beautiful, and this one
just jumps off into an incredible jam at the end.
Debess
ps - does anyone have a tape of the complete show - I only have from the
Weather Report prelude to the end. I've been looking for the rest for a long
time...

| At first I said, "should cover tunes like Dear Prudence, How sweet...., Tangled
Up In Blue etc be on this tape...."
Then I thought why not.
Then I thought well if someone actually sat down and thought out all
the great Jerry originals then they'd easily fill a 90 minute tape up.
So there's something to vote on - should cover tunes be allowed to exclude
originals. Or should this become 2 tapes.
Here's another Jerry tune - Standing on the Moon. I like em all so someone
else'll have to pick.

A good Bertha is requisite (if it wasn't already mentioned).

well as one of the 73 era Eyes with the jazzy jam at the end.
Sorry I don't have any solid suggestions, I don't have Deadbase memorized

As for Morning Dew, I remeber listening to a tape of the Grateful Dead Hour
(right after they changed the name from DHH) with what I thought at the
time was the best I ever heard. I don't remember which GDH it was, and my
tape was stolen, but it had to be during GDH's 1-11 because I only taped

I definitely think we should limit inputs to one. It would be unfair
to not include everyone on this despite differences in taste, experience,
and prefernce. We have a good 30 people who want to have contribute to
this...we can always do more later. For songs like China->Rider, or
Estimated->Eyes or Help->Slip->Frank, I don't see where that would be a
problem to include the pairs/triplets. Although, this is art, if
someone feels the absolute, dire need to add more than one song, it would
be wrong to discourage, yet maybe unfair to the other.
Let's start a list. We can reorder it later:

| Quick comment: At one point I tried to compile live Dead by breaking it
down into periods... Something like '68-9, '70-1, '72, '73-5, etc. I got
bogged down pretty quickly though.
This all-periods approach, with lots of help (and a lot more source material
than I could muster), is much better...
When asked for just 1 (or just 5) nominations though... I feel like the
protaganist in those rental-car ads when faced with "aisle seat or
window?" <head spinning>
Well, in the spirit of the commercial, at least I know which group I'll be
listening to as I ponder... - JayC.

How about the one from the 12/86 Oakland run after Jerry returned
from his diabetic coma.
A good "Morning Dew" to consider is the Hartford '87 version. He
wailed on that one. "Cold Rain" from that run wasn't bad either.

| i think we should nominate all we want, then pick ONE version of each
(maybe after a few listens at the party) tune... if it takes more than
one tape, then so be it! :^)
if we have trouble voting on a particular version, we can have
primaries... :^) fer instance, 5 eyes nominted? 2 get most of the
votes, then a run off... something like that...
i move for unlimited nominations, but only one version on the final
tape... "best" being a subjective measure anyway, how badly can we go
wrong?
and i also move for as much live stuff as possible... i'd rather not
put studio versions on, with the possible exception of some of the
Grisman/Garcia acoustic stuff...

| Just a suggestion for the tape making process...
I recently made a quick 60min mix of Dead/JGB for my aunt, a very spiritual person
who I thought might like the music. I started by brainstorming and
making a list of songs I thought she could get into (while keeping in
mind what I had available in my modest collection.)
Then, I just kinda went with the flow. I selected the first song.
While it was recording, I came up with the next song. Before I knew
it, I had filled the tape. The timings came out right and there was very
little unused space! When I played it back the songs blended well!
So! Here's my idea: keep up with the brainstorming process of selecting specific
songs. Looks like a nice list so far! (it might help to know the time
length of the songs) Then, have a pahty, get together, and start
creating the setlist. Impromptu ala the Dead! Then, its just a matter
of working out the timings and flips for the tapes.
If all goes right, in the end will be something that is much greater
then could ever be completely planned!

> i think we should nominate all we want, then pick ONE version of each
okaaaaaay...then, how about something from the Phil and Friends
night at the Berkeley Community Theatre - I think the date was 9/94? -
the only "Jerry" song that I have from that is Birdsong, which is
very nicely done - it is quite amazing the space that they can get
into even with acoustic instruments. Jerry's voice is very strong,
even though he does flub one line, that should not keep it from being
considered the "best of Jerry" ;-)
(to open up a new can of worms, does the best of Jerry have to be
a song Jerry sings on/wrote - surely the best of Jerry includes his
guitar work! - probably not a good idea to even bring this up ;-)
> and i also move for as much live stuff as possible... i'd rather not
> put studio versions on, with the possible exception of some of the

I have a tape of Garcia/Grisman from the Warfield 2/91, which has
an incredibly beautiful version of Friend of the Devil - there's
also a Ripple encore, but there's too much, shall we say, audience
participation/enthusiasm to really hear Jerry well enough to include
in this endeavor. There's also some tunes with Jerry playing banjo
on 'em...interested in those?
and, I am still searching for the "best" Wheel - we must have a Wheel
on this...

Hey da ve!!!!
Wow, very cool idea - and thanks for letting me be a part. Yes, I think I
can rack my brain and come up with something....
Well, there was one of the BG shows in 91 when they sang We Bid You Goodnight
(ok, so I guess it was the last show). Anyway Jerry sang the
"walking in Jeruselem just like Job" line - did the round and then next line
started the same line again, caught his mistake and sang "walking in
Jeruselem one more time" :-)
there is also one of my all time favorites .. Walkin The Dog from Philly 8?
I'll get the tape at home, or I bet Mystery would know. There are only 6
Walking The Dog's and he helped me get 4 or 5 of them!
Let's not forget the China->Rider from the first ever Albany run
or the 5/?/77 Scarlet->Fire from Chicago (which I could use a better copy of
if anyone has! :-)
or how could I forget the DEFINITIVE Morning Dew from MSG 9/16/90!! Yeah, if
I could only vote for one thing this would be it. That was a downright
religious experience. And I know you were there, that was the day Phyllis
had the party, I met my honey and, and, and... :^)
so that is what I can think of for now. Feel free to pass them along or
even post this. And don't forget to say hi to the decheads, I still miss
you all!!

The Wheel 10/3/94 Boston Garden
should probably include a minute or so of space, which has evolved
into some joyous noise to be sure - trumpets and xylophones and
drums (so maybe, technically, this really is part of the song since
the drummers are in on it ;-) and Bobby "sawing" away underneath -
and from this wonderful chaos, The Wheel just melts out of it.
It starts out slowly, fluidly until they break out into the words.
At the end, Jerry slows it down again but the rest of the band
starts into Watchtower, he finishes his song and then starts right
in with them in a bit...so, if this is chosen, and it's played to
the -real- end, we will hear Watchtower starting and everytime we
play this tape we'll think - now -why- didn't we include the
Watchtower?!? Really, don't y'all love the way Jerry plays
AllAlongTheWatchtower?

| If 2+ tapes are needed and it's getting out of hand, you might want to
revert to a Garcia-co-composed set and a covers set...
(Thinking back to the earlier discussion of including covers.)
Just a thought. In a quarter century of doing tape compilations, I've
found dividing chaos into 2 heaps can give the comforting illusion of
control, and also tap into a yin/yang thing. [3 or more heaps somehow,
cosmically, never pans out (for me).] - JayC.

| i was thinkin' ...
we need some rules to break for this. i've thought of some:
- no released material = bootlegs only
- songs chosen must have a very strong jerry feature: grate
emotional lyrics, or excellent jammin'
- only songs where jerry remembered all the words
- source tape must be high quality, no earbleeders.
- tapes which show evidence of abuse (ie left out of the case on
the car floor, [you know who you are]) will not be considered
- only one song from any given date, except songs like h>s>f etc
- nothing with a donna scream, or a bobby rap
- source tapes must have a verifiable geneology
- DAT sources are a plus
;-) ;-)

I like the idea of chronological ordering - start with the very early stuff
and listen to the evolution and end with the last song from Chicago. If there
was room on the end of the last tape, I might even add the Hunter eulogy
(especially if someone can get a recording of him reading it).

Jay's lists I think have left off some nominations because they
didn't have complete/any dates - right? So, maybe those should
be pinned down so they can be included?
he also didn't include commercially released nominations - is that
really agreed that that's the way we want to go? I haven't heard
anyone say they didn't agree with this - but there are some nice
"live" suggestions there too - maybe someone can supply a bootleg
version!?!
one of my nominations was for a '73 Eyes - and I am still of the
very strong (and yet humble) opinion that this year was the epitome
of Eyes - I just don't have a recording of one that is perfect
(the playing is perfect, my recordings of them are not! ;-) -
and I feel (even though there are several nominations for this song
from other years), that if we don't consider a '73 version, we may not
get the best! Even by '74, the style had changed...
Debess

and also, along with the chronological ordering of this thing...
The suggestion of Jerry's last song being the last song on the
tape(s) is one I like.
I was thinking about what the -first- song should be. I've never
heard these hogstomper songs, so I can't comment on them. But one
of the early songs listed is "He Was a Friend of Mine" and it just
seems like such an appropriate song to begin with.
Now, I've never actually heard this done by Jerry, but have heard
Dylan sing it - and to me, it's always been a tearjerker - I think
he wrote it for Woody Guthrie - but, in any event, the sentiment is
probably right on for what we're doing here...
fwiw,
Debess

Are live boots of Old and In the Way and/or Garcia/Grisman readily available?
I would be disappointed if some of the unusual groups Jerry played in were
not represented because of lack of a boot. On the other hand, I don't see
any problem of using only live boot of Dead material.

| ok, here's yet another proposal... i have taken Jay and Debess' lists,
and taken off all the dates, specific versions, studio vs live etc...
i propose that each head be given 15 selections from the list of some
70+ nominations... the votes are for SONGS ONLY... not versions...
if that brings us down to a manageable number of SONGS, THEN we can
start picking versions...
fwiw, i do have one bootleg Old and in the Way...
as for Jay's suggested guidelines, let's decide on them after we get
some SONGS picked! and i propose one week of voting... results
tabulated a week from tomorrow?

| re: a hot version of Brown-Eyed Women - I have an amazing sounding DAT AUD tape
of 3-23-74. I forget if its in set I or II, but that version is nice!
Another thought - how can people vote on version they've never heard yet?
Maybe we should have a pre-taping party party, to audition the various
versions.
Not to usurp Tim Grady's offer of use of his pad - but my stereo is pretty
well optimized for extracting the best sound possible out of a tape.
I have an equalizer, dynamic noise reduction filters, 60 Hz hum notch filter,
etc. The only problem is, my place is pretty small. I could fit maybe 8-9
people max into my living room, with half sitting on the floor front of the
speakers. Could stuff another 3-4 in the dining room, but thats about it.
Ken, Jeff M - you guys have been to my place - could you picture 10
tape-crazed DECheads in my living room??? I have gotten a new armchair and
couch, but the sq. footage of floor space is the same.

| The 81 Long Beach TLEO is from 8/28/81.
Something in one of the previous notes mentioned the Last song recorded as
the end of the tape, and then wondered about the beginning stuff.
How about one of the songs from a tape I (and possibly others) have
of Sarah and Jerry from a club called (I think) The Tangent, prior
to the Dead getting together. The do a bunch of songs, all acoustic,
among them, The Long Black Veil, and Keano The Rent Man. On the other
side of the tape is another pre-dead band, a jug band whose name
escapes me (with Hunter, Log Hollow?) where they do more acoustic
stuff, including Mule Skinner Blues, and Jerry's Breakdown.
Just to increase the madness ;-)

remember, it was narrowed down to 2/16 or 17, 3/8, or other.
My weekends are kid-dominated, my weekday evenings girlfriend-dominated

well, originally the proposal was to cut off voting today...
now the question is, how many songs do you think we can realistically
include? if we take the top 15, then the list would end at what,
attics? personnally i think 15 is pretty manageable... still a tough
task since now we have to wade through the different versions, and
that's a lot of listening!
has the line been drawn now??? take the top 15??? i still think we're
looking at 3 tapes (and if there's room we can always use songs 16+ for
"philler")

But depending on where the azimuth screw is and how hard the cassette door
is to get off (usually easy!), most decks have adjustable azimuth... and
what a difference it makes!

true, but probably not something people way want to have messed with under
party_conditions, without a handy nearby Nortronics AT-210 Alignment Tape,
pink noise generator, and spectrum analyzer, to put the alignment back where

| Hey Tim,
Couple of things - what time do you envision things getting rolling on next
Sat? Late afternoon?
Probably a good idea to not get started too late, but I'll be out leading
a XC ski trip Sat. morning/early afternoon, so I don't think I can arrive
any earlier than 5.
Hasn't been a real DEChead taping party in a long time - might was well see
about doing it up right! I'm into bringing over a bunch of stuff to play
back my DAT tapes. I'll bring my home DAT deck for playback, and the small
portable for making a copy of the BoG onto. I'll bring my stack-o-
sound-processing gear. I have DATs of about 1/2 the stuff people want to
tape, and since people will be bringing their cassettes, I'll also bring my
Nak CR7a deck for master playback of those. I think it'll be a good idea to
use the CR7A for master playback because: it has azimuth control, so it can
be tweaked for each different cassette; by using this deck for playback,
noone else's deck is tied up for playback, and everyone else can use their
deck for record; and it has a real-time tape counter that'll help in figuring
song lengths. I'll bring a patch box and some long RCA cables too.
All this gear, and everyone else's deck, will (ideally) need a table to
go on. Tim, do you have some sort of table than can be located near the
stereo? I do have 10-15 ft' RCA cables that can go from the table cluster
to the amp, so the table does not neccessarily have to be right INFRONT of the
stereo cabinet or speakers. I recall you have a pretty good sized living room.
If we get rolling around 5-6 PM, we maybe be able to finigh the BoG tape in
2-3 hours, and have time to spin a DAT for everyone. I'll try to come up
with song lengths for the stuff I have on DAT beforehandd. I don't think I can
stay tooooo late since I want to go telemarking on Sunday.

| Top of my list for today was to post something about this.
I think we can start around 6. We can figure out food on the fly - pizza
or subs or something. Everyone is welcome to bring beer/drinks
etc...I'll have some available too.
If you're coming, send me mail. If you've invited anyone who isn't in
Grateful, just let me know, that's cool. If you need directions, say so
- I have them canned, and I'll mail them to ya. I'd rather not post them
publicly...
If you have source tapes and/or equipment to bring, let me know via mail
too.
I'd like to get a rough head count. I'd also like to invite anyone who'd
just like to get together for a general party, not just the tapers, so
feel free to come by even if you're not into the taping...after all, this
is also a birthday party for Da ve, as well as St. Patrick's day!
All are welcome - just send me a note so I'll know what to expect.
Thanks,
tim

hey now! I'm psyched about this party next weekend! I'm also real curious
to see if we're going to be able to make this tape thing happen at the same
time!
Josh, I somehow don't agree that it's going to happen in 2-3 hours...I'm
thinking many, MANY hours - because we don't have the "master" in place yet.
We're going to have to sift through some versions and pick the best...how's
that going to work, I'll be interested in seeing!
it's always been -my- impression that this was a let's-get-the-DECheads-together
party and not -just- a taping party...I surely hope that it'll be a good
turnout...I'm looking forward to seeing y'all!
do we want to be organized more than "on the fly" about food and drink???
it shouldn't be too difficult for everyone to bring something to share with
everyone, right? I just drink beer socially, uh huh, so maybe I'm not the
best one to make a suggestion - but if there's any leanings towards a keg,
I think we should all pitch in? I'm more interested in something else to
drink myself - like koolaid!
the hardest to make happen logistically, fer shure, is going to be the
tapes themselves. How will we make sure we have all these versions to listen
to? I think right now we should try to see if we actually have tapes of all the
versions we want and that there's a way for those tapes to get to the party!

| Picking what versions... I sorta think that in the case of where there's
say 2 or 3 versions of a tune, that we could play maybe 1-2 minutes of each
(but not neccessarily the whole tune) to get a feel for the tape sound quality,
and how the band and Jerry are sounding. Then FF to the end of the song and
gather how long that tune;version is. After doing this for all the
tune;versions, we'll have a list to start pruning down. No way it'll all fit
on a 90 min or even a 110 min tape. Some some of the longer tune's have to
go. 11/17/73's Playin'>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playin is 50 minutes, for example.
Terrapin Station is a tough call, too.... 1 Terrapin could easily take up
15 min, or about 2-4 shorter tunes.
Prescanning the tunes should hopefully take about 2-3 hours. Assembling the
tape about also about 2 hours. I'll root around my collection and see if
I find some good versions of tunes, justa throw extra wood in the fire :-).
Definitely agree on debess's sentiments re: food & drink! Also, tim, there's
room to set up a table in the stereo room for the clusterf*** ?

what's the criteria for the "Best" of Jerry?
the best sounding tape?
the best sounding music on the tape?
the shortest version so we can fit them all on one tape?
...I'm wondering -how- we're gonna stop a song 2 minutes into it!
ouch! - I hate when that happens ;-)

| Josh,
I'm not too concerned about finding room, and I have a decent, heavy-duty
folding table about 8' long that we can pile the gear onto, if necessary.
I do tend to think this could get long - are we doing just one 100-minute
tape? Two 90's? Two 100's? How much actual tune time are we looking at
dubbing? Another option, of course, is that once we've decided WHAT to
dub, we can dub till we drop and then defer the rest till later...either
I can do it myself or we can do it in the morning. For those unaware, I
have a fairly large place that can easily sleep eight before someone's on
the floor, and everyone is welcome to stay over.
I'm with Debess about the theme of this gathering, too - this is NOT
intended as strictly a taping party - my intention is for it to be a
general purpose gathering of the tribe, as it were, and I'm encouraging
everyone who'd like to come hang out for the evening to drop by. After
all, it IS the birthday of our only former presidential candidate, right?
;-)
So far, I don't have a lot of indications as to who intends to come -
only a few emails...if this is a pony-keg scale event, then let's clear
that up right now, shall we?

| re BoG criteria, I'd say "yes" to all three. For me, choosing which tune does
depend on a mix of sound qual, performance, and the time factor.
Probably a good idea to concentrate on making a good master, as da ve
suggested. However, I gotta pack up my gear no later than 11 PM, as I'm
going telemarking on Sunday come hell or high water (didn't get to telemark
this weekend and I'm jonesing real bad!).

this, as near as I can determine, is the list of tapes that we still
need to get ahold of for the party. any ?'s means that from the nomination
there was no date given and I came up with possible guesses - maybe the
original nominator can decide from what I came up with. And guess what,
I -still- couldn't come up with a date for that show with Ornette ;-)
After the formfeed, I've posted the complete list that we're looking for,
so anyone who is so inclined can bring any tapes they have from the list
along (just because someone says they have it already, doesn't necessarily
mean it's the best copy).

| Just had a chat with da ve, as to what we could reasonably hope to get done
tapeing-wise. It seems to us that we should aim for making a DAT master
from whatever analog and digital tapes I and anyone else brings along.
Then that DAT can be used to seed the analog. In other words (as noted
earlier) probably best not to worry about trying to run a lot decks all at
once (ie. this way we can have a 'mixed-mode' party and not a flat-out taping
party.. or something like that). In other, other words, bring your tapes but
don't worry about bringing your decks. Uh, does that make sense?
Best of Jerry Judging Criteria:
What we'll do is toss all the tapes onto a large block of ice. The hottest
tapes will melt through the ice fastest, and those'll be the one's we'll
use....yeah, thats it... the tapes that make it through the first round then
get tossed onto a block of dry ice for final elimination.... :-)

509.233 | put your thinking caps back on: song sequence? | QUOIN::BELKIN | but from that cup no more | Mon Mar 18 1996 15:58 | 21 |
| I sure was extra-crisp on Sunday morning. Took all morning to plug everything
back into my stereo.
Thanks to Tim for providing the great party-space - thanks to da ve and probs
for helping out with the taping - thanks to everyone who brought their tapes -
and thanks to all those who actually stuck it out to the end of taping!
Last night I scanned through the tapes and marked down all the timing of
the songs. Also, I came up with a list of Jerrytunes that didn't ever get
nominated, or were too far down on the list and were cut off, but in hindsight
seem like real classic Jerry to me. There's a few that IMHO really should be
added to the tape (Muddy Water, Dire Wolf...) However I spaced out this AM
and forgot to bring in both lists.
I think if we go with two 100min tapea, we can easily fit two more "short"
(~7 min) tunes on Tape 1. The way it stands now, Sides A and B of Tape 1 are
both around 43 min. Also, we all might want to now consider song sequencing
(thats why I figured out all the song lengths). Can't do much about working
on song order till I type in the info tomorrow, though.

first, I had to look up "impunity" to see that Jay wasn't
giving me some sorta challenge... or insult ;-) ;-) ;-)
about Josh's idea of "sequencing" - my thoughts on the subject
are - leave it as is! It seemed as it was being made that there
was lots of thought being given to where the breaks would come
in the analog version.
for those that weren't there - it will give some sorta idea
as to how the evening went - first there was a semblance of order
(not chronological, not alphabetical!), then as the DAT filled
up there was a switch to timing criteria, and then as people
started nodding off, all rules were thrown to the wind and
who knows what ended up on the master ;-) (except I do know
that it ended as planned ;-)
but, it is a true reflection of the way it went down and I
think it should stay that way...imho fwiw!!!
we can add those "classics" to version 2...

Yes, this is true, we _were_ thinking ahead to the analog flips when
putting the songs onto the DAT, but its not too hard at all to resequence it.
For example, put it chronological, or semi-chrono order. Or alternate upbeat
rockers with the slow ballads.
The initial order that was followed was roughly "most votes first".
> started nodding off, all rules were thrown to the wind and
> who knows what ended up on the master ;-) (except I do know

I wuz bummed that nobody brought any "Day Jobs". I think a side B of Day Jobs
woulda been nice, eh? :-)
Anway, I'll type in the 'setlists' and timings tomorrow. Who knows, there
might be some obvious re-shuffling that can be done, that spiffs up the order
a bit.

I very much want to add a few of these to the tapes - Muddy Water, in
particular, has that old-timey folk/rock synthesis that Jerry loved so much.
Muddy Water 12/5/71 Only Time Performed.

Gray Folded contains a significant portion of the 2/13/70 dark star.

The highlight of this is the transition from Scarlet to Fire as Donna's
in tune, Phil introduces Fire with a short solo, and Jerry takes two
solos, the first smoking and the second blazing, before singing the
first verse. I vote (:-)) for dropping this since it gets cut before
it ever becomes a "best of Jerry" number.

| Yes, sorry, I spun the 'master cassettes' and sent 'em off to Mr. Dave Levy
last week. He should have gotten 'em by now. Mr. Levy? :-)
It'll go on 2 C100 cassettes. I did end up adding a few tunes, hope y'all
don't mind. The Ship of Fools intrumental that opens the second set of
6/23/74 has very expressive Jerry guitar, as does the SoF that it goes into.
Little Sadie is a great almost-unknown acoustic tune that had to be left off
of Dick's Pick's IV cause of the 'suits' having the tapes of it, I think
(reading between Bear's liner notes!). I like having Side B of tape 1 end
with an acoutic to link to the acoustic that opens Side A/Tape 2.
Sugaree continues the dancin' groove that China>Rider has, and Jerry's guitar
is up-front in the nice AUD. Jerry cracks his voice most amusingly in the
final chorus :-). shake it, shaaHHHAAAAkkeee it, Sugaree!
The GD interview is the short piece where he talks about how he got so pissed
after a '68 show that he threw Phil down the stairs, cause "the music was
f*ckd!", but they ended up using those tapes on Anthem.
Jerry muttering for just plain water, then the only-time-played Muddy Water,
this fits well to open Side B/Tape 2, which closes with Black Muddy River.
Is there a theme here or what? :-)

| My younger son Jeff has to write a paper about a composer of his choice
for 5th grade.
Found out yesterday he picked Jerry Garcia, "because I can ask my dad
questions about him." He told me this with a big grin, which tips me off
that saying this probably got some memorable sort of reaction (my money's
on laughter 8) from his teachers...
Now to me, this is perfect... First, it's an honor to be picked for
anything by a kid. Second, I just heard from my Best of Jerry leaf; with
luck I'll have the tapes before the paper's due. Not bad. Third, I
actually have quite a lot to say about Jerry as a composer... It's like a
chance for all my thoughts about Jerry's music, since his passing, to
coalesce.
Of course I'll let Jeff take the lead, guide the exchange, and, to quote
another string, express it in terms his schoolmates will understand.
Nevertheless, I may be able to register a couple of points about Jerry as
(a) composer of melodies for Hunter lyrics (b) key instigator (w/ Lesh) of
collective spontaneous improvisations [some of which, as I hear them,
would stand up alongside composed pieces when transcribed to paper].
The audience probably will have 2 frames of reference -- classical/jazz/folk
and alt-rock/rap -- and fall into 2 age groups (11 and, like, old).
Assuming Jeff and I can find common ground ourselves, this could be fun...
Don't know if the paper is to be presented in front of the class -- that
could present some interesting possibilities... - JayC.
P.S. If Jeff went for recorded samples (excellent filler 8)...
For teachers, parents, & kids with classical/jazz exposure, it'd be
ideal to juxtapose something like the transition into Cryptical, from
Hundred Year Hall, where Lesh cues the change and Jerry, then others,
pick up the riff), with a similar magical empath(et)ic musical moment
from jazz -- maybe an excerpt of Bill Evans (p), Scott LaFaro (b), and
Paul Motian (d) "Live at the Village Vanguard". But for kids into 90s
radio... Not sure. Maybe focus on some of Jerry's best vocal melodies
& guitar lines -- a couple of well-chosen tunes could showcase both.
Let Jeff program his own "set" of live & studio examples...

the Terrapin came from, I immediately thought "it must be the Mind Left
Body jam from Albany in 1990". After seeing the venue list for the BOJ
tape, I appear to be correct in my assumption. I remeber much talk about
that jam after it happened because no one could figure out where it came
from. I rememer spending a long time thinking to myself (at the show)
where I heard the riff from, and it turns out it's in an REO Speedwagon
tune! MLB is from Bobby's solo album I think. I doubt he covered REO :-)

and might offer a couple as prizes, tied to certain lucky cut selections,
if the teachers allow it.
For lack of time, I used arbitrary statistical means to select a pool of
live cuts. See below. Turns out a healthy subset of these are available
on commercial live CDs, including DP volumes, which will be loaded into a
player magazine...
Jeff rehearsed it for the extended family -- what a ham -- anyway it seems
to have the right current of fun & adventure for the Dead, not to mention
the last day of school... - JayC.

==========================================================================
P.S. Originally I was focussing on 70s shows, then I ran out of time, so
I never got as far as IN THE DARK, BUILT TO LAST, and other albums that
introduced new live staples. All MIA above.
Also missing are truly grate songs that haven't seen commercial/live
release -- Peggy-O, with 263 performances, leaps to mind. Love the
version on Best of Jerry. (Too bad I can't randomize a tape!)
Albums like BEAR'S CHOICE, COMPLIMENTS, OLD & IN THE WAY, CATS UNDER THE
STARS, HEAVEN HELP THE FOOL, etc., didn't introduce cuts that fit the
arbitrary 50/150 criteria. (Though Smokestack Lightning and Hard to
Handle were much-performed...)

my older brother was at that show - he still remember's Jerry's black guitar
he used for that acoustic/electric portion of the show. Jer on electric
and Bobby on acoustic. Jer gets into that twangy, growly sound!
the song is about Altamont. I've known that for years. But I never flashed
on the title till I heard a newreport the other week that mentioned
some racing at the New England Speedway (the one in NH).. duh... of course,
Altamont was a motor _Speedway_. New Speedway Boogie.

the group's name was It's A Beautiful Day. right?
and the album's name was BVT and the Chrome Nun.

509.290 | | SPECXN::BARNES | | Mon Jul 01 1996 16:23 | 10 |
| NO...It's a Beautiful Day...the band....put out the album with White
Bird on it..
BVT and the Chrome Nun was an offshoot of The Airplane and it did not
contain White Bird, and the musicians from IaBD were not on
BVT and the Chrome Nun. BVTatCN contained alot of weird, spacy music...I
have a tape of BVT and the Chrome Nun, but no IaBD.....
