Well, I'm only 25 and my memory is kind of scant sometimes.  Speaking of
birthdays, my mother has a friend that is going to turn 104 this weekend.
She is the oldest person in Harvard... and quite a woman: still takes 
daily walks to the P.O., lives alone, cooks, gives presentations to the
Historical Society, etc.....

    this should be an active note for the next few weeks!!!!!  March is
    a busy time for birthdays and anniversaries in this file...

    morning after my first Dark Star. I remember going home to cram all night

	Today is Bruce Springsteen's birthday.  I believe he is about 42 years
old.  I heard this from BCN this AM during my 6 minute commute.

	I've always liked Bruce's old stuff.  Never really cared for the newer
material.  His songs remind me of my High School dayz to some degree...

Yes, a quarter of a century it is!  Makes me feel old when it's phrased that

Now I can't sing Old Man with any conviction anymore.  I'm no longer "24 and
there's so much more".   Actually, I stopped "living *alone* in a paradise" 2
months ago so the song was shot anyway.  Know any songs about being 25?

And remember, Bob Weir is 44 on Wednesday.

Here's a funny story - I was talking to Andy Burns at the White Horse on
Saturday, and he explained about his personal name, "Tamalpais Chiefs" (he saw
it on a t-shirt Bobby was wearing).  While searching my Dead Dates calendar, I
noticed that on 10-15-66, the day after I was born, was the Peace Festival in
Mt. Tamalpais, CA!

ps. the only thing listed for 10-14 was the ending of the Warfield shows in
1980.  These were the first acoustic sets in a while, and I guess these were
the shows that spawned "Reckoning/For the Faithful"?

Four years ago this Halloween night I saw my first Slipknot show at the Blue
Plate in Holden.  I remember they played I Used to Love Her.  I brought my two
roommates, and we had licenses from CT, TX, and IL!  Amazing we got through the
door (those of you who've dealt with Tiny know what I mean).

Since 10/31/87, they've played about 250 shows, about 150 of which I attended.

Here's to (at least) 4 more years!

    Funny how vivid the memory remains ... clearer than many more recent
    memories.  I was in the 5th grade.  We were watching some educational
    program on TV, and they cut right in with the news.  Within minutes the
    whole school was on it's way to the auditorium, so the school principle
    could explain to us what they knew and talk to us about how serious an
    event it was.

    hell shows and they showed the whole home movie WITH the one frame that
    seems to get cut out (the fatal shot to the head) ..... wow I was
    shocked by the slow-mo graphics.....kinda left me a bit numb.....Oliver
    Stone's movie will be comeing out I guess very soon about the whole

Yeah,  I remember - I was living in Washington, DC where my father was
stationed for 2 yrs and was in 1st grade.  People were in bad shape
that day.  

My father was in some marine outfit that marches at the statue of Iwo Jima
every weekend.  Those guys also had top clearances and did special
guard duties - anyhow, he used to gurard Kennedy at the white house.  My 
mom has pictures of my sister and brother in the rocking chair Kennedy 
used to love.  Also do you recall that when they held the public viewing
of Kennedy's casket in the Rotunda that their were 4 servicemen guarding
the casket,  one from each branch of the service on each point of the casket?
My father was there...the marine.  I have a book called "The Last Torch"
which has a shot or two of him there.  (too bad one trip to war in Korea
and *three* in Vietnam (2 bronze stars, one silver star) have left their 
marks....)

And to think in this day and age if what they say John Kennedy did in
his PERSONAL TIME was true that people in this country would be in such
an uproar the man would have never been elected had "the people" heard
about it.  If I can digress further for a moment - I don't want anybody
who can be scrutinized under a microscope and come out squeaky clean to
be elected - he's either squeaky clean (doubtful) or very sneaky (more
like it).  I prefer somebody more normal who's done a few things, made
a few mistakes and learned from them.

Thank you everyone, it was a very nice birthday (yesterday).  I spent it alone,
by choice, holed up in my warm apartment (in my warm PJs!) watching rented 
movies ... yet I wasn't alone for a minute thanks to the love of all my
wonderful friends and a very special person who shall remain nameless, but not
Daveless.....:-).  It's a good feeling to be alone, but not alone.

    Today is Lou Reed's 48th birthday

    Friday Feb 28th Patty and I have been married 16 years. Took the day
    off (actually the whole weekend %^) ) and partyed and shopped and 
    basically had a REALGOOD TIME! Took some of those large crawfish that
    come from Maine up to Tumbledown and had a feast Sat. nite after
    spending the afternoon in the Brekenridge Brewery. (burp!)

    	So Saturday night, Mike and I celebrated our marriage by inviting
    over 45-50 of our closest relatives, and have a small dinner......
    
    	Several people brought presents, whcih was completely unexpected,
    and so we had a small session of "present opening". After we opened the
    last one, Mike looks over at me, hands me this small box and says,
    "Here, I thought you should have one of these. Actually its two, one
    for me and one for you".
    
    	Since we had agreed not to give each other presents, I was taking
    completely off guard, but I opened the box. It contained two new
    wedding rings. They are solid at the back"inside part of your hand",
    and the part seen by everybody has 6 hearts. Three going one way, three
    going the other, and centered in the middle of each heart is a small
    ruby in my ring, and a small diamond in hers. Yes, these are
    heart of gold bands!
    
    	She thought of the idea herself a few years ago, and has been
    planing this for a while now.

    Last night on the way home I had the radio tuned to 94 WHJY in
    Providence.  They were playing a lot of head music (pshcadelic) for
    some reason.  They played that Pink Floyd  song from the 60's that has

    Stones 6k miles from home song (or whatever) and the dead St. Steven.

	they did have it already (in the US History section!)...
	so I bought after all these years of wanting to read it...

 Was interesting watching the special CBS had on Watergate last night..I found
 myself reliving a lot of stuff I was feeling back when all of this was going
 on.  


 Thank goodness that after the whole episode we can now have faith in our 
 leaders and that nothing like that stuff is going on today..:-/

 CBS says Deep Throat was L Patrick Gray then head of the FBI with a bunch of
 data to back up their claim.  Makes sense to me I guess.


 The Saturday night Massacre was unreal.  I remember hearing about it as I 
 was working in a 7-11 store in Calif.  A customer with whom I would get into
 some interesting discussions Re Watergate came in and told me about it.

 I used to stay home during the day and watch the hearings on TV (loved Sam
 Ervin) and right about then was when I really got hooked on talk radio.

    thursday Pat and I will have been married 9 years. Monday I turn

Fire on the Mountain, my rescued Golden Retriever, is two years old today.

Well, that's not quite accurate.  Since Fire was abandoned, we really
don't know his actual birthday.  Today is the day we picked as his
birthday.  We shall celebrate by running around, chasing a tennis ball,
and otherwise acting like fools tonight.  (yea, like we don't do that
*every* night!)

	Well as time ticks away, this blue ball spins around once more, and 
another year has been put to rest. This year I've decided to look back at what
I call my life. Some of us might have big blow out parties, some of us would 
rather not and just settle for the "its just another day" way of thought. I
think this year I've fallen into the middle of these two extremes. It is just
another day but its a day that marks time for my Mother and I, and personally
I can't thank her enough ! And like the robin, she fed me when I had no idea
how to, kept me clean and neat then to slowly push me out of the nest to take
wing on my own. We go off to school to learn our ABCs and 123s, meet other kids
and make friends, some that will be life long ! And to those childhood buddies
that I grew up with, thanks to you all for still being around to talk to hang
out with and now share the memories of that childhood with our own children.
And Dad the guy that always seem to have the answers to any problem I was able
to get into, not that his answers where the ones I would have like to hear !
His wisdom seemed endless, his love enormous ! and now he has finally put down
the tools that put a roof over my head and food on my plate, I thank him, from
the bottom of my heart. Brothers Dave, Bill, and my sister Bonnie you all rubbed
off on me, the little brother that is now the biggest. All three of you taught
me the gift of music, their taste so different became mine. They showed me 
sports that have enlightened my life and most of all the friendship that only 
siblings could share.

	Then we really take the big step into the world, yes college ! New 
people to meet and like as in first grade some will continue to be life long
friends that you can't imagine never knowing, for me I made one true friend in
college, Martin. The two of us were so much a like it was like we were 
brothers. He being a little old and more worldly, he introduced me to a world 
I had only read about. Some of it was kinda scary but over the ten+ years we 
have become a little more wiser. He was the best man at my wedding and my best 
support in my divorce. Out of that marriage came this little sweet girl named 
Julie. As most of you know she is the life line I live for, Daddy's little 
girl :')...also during this time in my life I got a real job in the wonderful 
world of DEC, Ah yes digital has shaped me into the warped person that I am 
today ! but in all this warpness I found you, the great caring people of 
Grateful ! You all have a place in my heart, and for that I thank you all on 
this day, the anniversary of my birth........

	no, no, NO, ting, it's OCTOBER!!!!!!!!!  I know this because
	for some reason, besides being the wicked awesome beautiful
	month that it is, October happens to be a very fertile month
	for me - two out of three of my kids have birthdays in July 
	(Andra is 11 today!) and the other one is in August...and
	after having had ONE in the summer I said "never again"
	and tried for a different time of year, but, oh well...

    Just worry about how old you FEEL.  If you feel 21, then you are. :)

well, i've said it in other notes, but i've always wanted a chance to post
something here (and i missed posting my 1st anniversary at DEC)

today's my 23rd :^)

kind of a bummer that i have to work, but i guess that's life (but i've never
had to deal with school or work before on my birthday; even the summer i was
at school i was fortunate enough to have my b-day fall on a saturday)

    I was talking with Adam this AM and we said, "when exactly was that"
    
    It was one year ago today, at about 2 hours before High tide in
    Mattapoisett, that Hurricane Bob came slamming into the coast of Rhode
    Island bringing with it about 8 feet of storm sea. Mattapoisett was 
    littered with boats that hadn't been pulled out. Almost anything with
    enough bouyancey to carry it's mooring was washed ashore, hitting and
    dragging whatever was in the way on the way in. A brand new Oday 40
    molded  perfectly around a solid stone built garage, a custom built 40 
    footer lay on the shore as if half the hull was burried in the sand,
    but it was just not there. The town was without electricity for over a
    week and marine insurance companies set up a field office in New
    Bedford. There was a lot of unpleasantness beyond just the hurricane 
    in my life at that time and I am very glad that none of that is going
    on today!

    I was on my way home from Grand Junction.  I flew in a 40 person from
    Grand Junction (where they said NOTHING to me about Boston) to Denver
    (4+ hours by car).  I go up to check-in, and the lady tells me my
    flight to Boston's been cancelled.  Meanwhile, my luggage is getting
    on another plane and going to Boston via Chicago.
    
    Well, I was on vacation, so I had no idea, and my immediate response
    to this poor woman who I snarled at was "WHY?  WHAT DID *I* DO?"  She
    proceeded to tell me that Bob was going to hit Boston and all flights
    were being cancelled.  Gave me an option.  Stay in Denver or go to
    Chicago.  I was so upset, I started to cry.  There I was alone, with
    no change of clothes in a strange city.   After visiting the airport 
    bar and downing an oversized Kahlua Sombrero at 9:00 in the morning, 
    I gathered my whits about me, called my mom, called my friend in Denver,
    and got a $90 hotel room for $25 (because it was "Mother Nature's fault" 
    the airline wasn't really responsible for any of it.)  Spent the day in bed
    zoning to tv.
    
    After all the fuss I made, I was glad for the extra day, and especially
    since I got that king sized bed made for 3 all to myself!

 Lessee...last year, the day before Bob hit, I was at a Jimmy Buffett show at
 GW the night before (which he referred to as a huricane party)..on Bob day I
 was dealing with trying to get a new radiator in my car and trying to get 
 back home before it got too crazy out there..fortunately I made it and didn't
 have any hassles.

    I was working 3rd shift last year and slept through hurricane
    Bob.  Never even flinched.  Woke up to trees all over the
    place and had to take a very long route to work that night.

    I was down the Cape body suffin' as Bob made its way toward the NE
    coast :') the day before and by 8pm I was getting my a$$ off the cape
    cuz my Cousin and I had our little ones with us and thought we should
    split ! and Bob day I was sitting in my place thrown' back a few cold
    ones sitting in the dark ! the next day I was picking up lots of down
    trees near my Mom&Dad's house....which I had to walk over to their
    house cuz their street was completely blocked off !

I woke up pretty late that morning so I just called in to makle sure they
weren't expectiing me to show up.  The secretary said they were sendiong
everyone home at 12 noon.  It was already around 10 or 11, so I just stayed
home.  Me and my 2 housemates had just moved into our house, and I was not
looking forard to my nice new rug in the living room getting trashed.  We
invited some friends over for a hurricane party, and as the rain started and
the wind shipped up, it really didn't look too bad.  Then I noticed the water
level in the driveway was getting pretty high (it was halfway up one of the
tires on Rich's truck).  We found out from the neighbors that the sewer drain
at the end of the driveway was clogged with leaves and was backing up.  Before
we knew it the water was about to start entering our cars from under the door. 
We all frantically scrambled to get our cars up the street to higher ground. 
My friend's Porsche was especially vulnerable, and they pushed it up the street
just as water started entering the passenger compartment.  I was up to my hips
in water just standing in the road.  Pretty bizzare.  Then I noticed the water
was above the bottom of the crappy little basement windows.  That, plus a leaky
bulkhead and cracks in the foundation, made for 2 inches of water in the
basement.  Luckily we didn't keep anything on the floor.

I shot a black and white roll (for effect :-)) but it could have been a little
more exciting-looking, like if I took a picture of streams of water entering
the basement through the foundation, or a 3-foot waterline on the side of the
house.

Amazingly, we didn't lose power, but we had no cable for 3 days. :-(  (or
should that be :-)?)
