    Congrats Lisa.  Yea, there be babies everywhere.  The tail end of the
    boomers catching up on things.  We Thompsons have been turning out
    one or two grandkids a year for our parents recently, to go with the
    four already in place.  First there was Hannah (ours) then Caitlin
    (Bill&Carol) then Kathryn (Bob & Joan) then Emily (John & Peg) and 
    the newest Daniel (ours).  But Dan will not be the newest for long, 
    as Bill & Carol should be turning in a new entry sometime next
    April.  Then it should be John & Peg's turn as Bob&Joan have 
    officially dropped out of the competition (what with older kids
    Matt & Alice already being enough of a distraction ;-)

Hey, I got some feel good news of my own this week - one of my friends that I 
have known since we were in grade school together (even before that now that I 
think of it) asked me to be in his wedding!!  I'm way psyched!  I've never 
been in a wedding before...

    Jimmy was pooping outside (and thoroughly enjoying it) at about
    15 months. He was peeing on his sister's toys under the clubhouse
    this summer but he got caught and we haven't seen any more of
    that (not to say it doesen't happen :-) )

    
    Actully, our puppy has known to poop outside from the day we got her
    (she was 11 weeks old then), the only problem was that on a few
    occasions she didn't have the opportunity to get outside :^/

At one time a fair percentage of my whole cost center was short, not as short
as me but short enough to get run down turning corners.  When it was time to
controbute a list of "wants" to the budget I put 1 dozen bicycle flags on it. 
My 6' manager did not understand....

    Last night was the annual Auction for Multiple Sclerosis at
    On The Green in Westborough (our local "bar").  Chris helped
    out in the bar room yelling out bids to the camera which led 
    to the main room.  :)  Won a bottle of champagne . . . Chris
    got the cd he wanted and WOW!  I was ever so excited when we
    got the $36 Maytag broiler pan for $7!  Way to go!  :) :) :)
    
    All for a good cause, it was a lot of fun!  If you ever get 
    the opportunity to attend one of these, you definitely should!
    By 10:30 everyone bids silly . . . and being there makes you
    feel like you're doing something good!

    Chris and I got our first Christmas Tree together yesterday.

    After stuffing the DECturkey and putting it in the oven, we
    decided to go out and look.  We went to the local tree place
    (I belive it supports the Rotary or the Lions Club -- something
    to that effect), and found ourselves a modest $11 tree.  It's
    about 4', which is good sized for our small apartment.  It wasn't
    the greatest looking tree, but be both felt it had potential.
    
    Upon getting our tree home and putting it in its stand, it still
    looked a little warped, but I figured with all the decorations it
    would hide its imperfections.  Within two hours the tree fell to 
    place like magic.  It is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!
    
    While the smell of fresh roasted turkey was filling the air, I 
    noticed I could also smell the pine . . . the mixture was incredibly 
    pleasing.  It reminded me of the fun time at the camping trip at 
    Big Rock!  :)
    
    With all the rush of Christmas it's easy to lose sight of what's
    important, but when Chris and I picked out our tree, I remembered.
    
    Through it all we have eachother.

    With everyone "asked" to leave Digital, I have now joined the few
    who are leaving on their own accord.  As of next Friday, 12/18,
    at 5:00 I'm outa here!  This makes me happy, as the climate at
    DEC has not been a very good one, especially for contract workers
    such as myself.  I grew up in a Deccie family, and my sister still
    works here, but what was once the only place I ever wanted to work
    has become almost like a nightmare.
    
    I'll be starting a new job at Isomedix in Northboro on 12/21 (just in 
    time for Christmas!)  This is a *growing* company, with great benefits,
    so I'm VERY happy! (they sterilize hospital equipment -- a good thing) :) 
    
    Although I'll miss my present co-workers and my morning breaks with
    Deane-O, I know there's much more out there for me.  I'm sure Chris'
    alter ego will be showing up every now and then, so I won't be saying
    goodbye.  I'll be seeing y'all at SLIPKNOT showz, and other gatherings,
    and some of you next October too! :) :) :) 
    
    Digital will always be special to me in that if it weren't for this
    company I wouldn't have met the most wonderful person to come into my
    life. 
    
    I wish all of you good luck and good fortune with the hope that this
    company gets back on track.

I'm really excited about this, and I have to tell someone about it.
I've been trying to settle down for it seems like years now.  After
I moved north from Florida to N.H., my job moved to LKG and I
had to find a new home.  I tried to buy one, but the deal fell
through, but not until AFTER I moved into the house (I was
desparate).  So...I had to find another house in Littleton, so
I wouldn't force my kids to change schools again.  In the mean
time, my former-seller-and-now-landlord continued to show the
house to buyers, with me in it.  I was lucky enough to find a
really nice house that was a desparation sale (divorce, bankrupcty,
foreclosure, DEC layoff with no TFSO, the works), but the house
had $100K in IRS liens and, as it turned out later, a bunch of
other liens on the title.  25 of them, all told.  My lawyer said,
"forget you ever saw the house.  You'll only live to regret it",
but I couldn't.

It's a six year old solar contemporary, custom designed and built
by the owner on 2.74 acres of conservation land.  It's gorgeous.
And the price is an absolute steal...77.5% of assessed value,
and Littleton tax assessments are at 100% of market value, 
supposedly.  She was asking $200K and settled for a lot less.

The seller said they had worked a deal with the IRS to settle.  
My landlord sold the house I'm in, and the new owner wants to 
get in before Christmas.  I'm still under relocation policy 
for my move from Florida, so DEC will cover closing costs
but only until the anniversary of my start date in ZKO - January
6th.  That's big bucks, including 3 point on the mortgage. 
Without it, the deal is shot.

So, it turns out the bank's lawyer says she's an expert at
handling this kind of case, but she wants more money.  The seller
is, needless to say, broke, and the sellers lawyer is a bozo.
He's several of the liens, and he's not lifting a finger to help,
cause, after all, he's a divorce lawyer anyway.  Last week I
told the bank's lawyer to proceed and I'll cover her.  Last 
weekend the new owner of the house I'm in calls to say they're
closing on Monday (the 14th) and they want to move in early. 
Hahahahaha.  I had committed to the landlord to be out on the
12th, and it wasn't looking good.  Out of stupidity and a lack
of time to devote to it, I had no real alternative plan - if the
house deal falls through, on 12/14 I'm homeless.

Today the bank's attorney called to confirm our closing on
Friday afternoon.  I move on Monday, into my own house, 
permanently.  So what if I'm broke for a couple years...;-)

I am definitely going to be doing some celebrating tonight.

Re: real estate lawyers

Always use one.  Pay for it...because pro bono work has no liability,
i.e. if something gets screwed up because your lawyer goofed, you
get what you paid for.

The bank's attorney is Sherry Gould in Littleton.  She's the one
who cleaned up the lien mess, and did so well that my own attorney
told me that anything I paid her is worth it.  If I did this again,
I'd hire her in a second.

    Closest I've got to a remote control is either my auto helm or cruise
    control. Auto helm probably is more remote and has show a better
    history of control, so that's probably closer.

re: remotes

This is too funny.  You see, I have this NAK amp/receiver w/ a remote.  I
like the remote because I can kickback and listen to tunes w/o dealing with
getting up - same reason for most folks :-).  So, my CD player of 7 yrs is
dead and it came time to buy a new one.  Not wanting to deal w/ another remote
narrowed my choice to a NAK CD player, which go for a bit more then a sony
CD player that may have more options.  So, up to Cookin' I went to check
'em out...  i brought my remote to make sure the newer model CD player worked
with it... sure enough it did (I was also waiting for NAK to change back to
the "old" faceplate style)....  in short, i bought the nak and paid approx
$140 for the luxury of having a single remote for the entire thing (price
diff betw. a similar sony and the nak)........ no regrets, yet!!  then again,
i haven't got the cred. card bill yet!!!  that was my biggest beef: a single
remote...i labored over this decision for a long time!!

    one nite when my friend Martin and I were out having a few beers after
    working out, so we could have those few beers..., had this great idea
    to make a remote-velcrow block ! take a block of wood put velcrow on it,
    and put the mating velcrow on the bottom of the remotes and you could
    have them all in one place ! even put a cord/rope attached to the block
    of wood with the velcrow on it and like a soap on a rope type set up ! 
    sounds silly now but man that nite is seemed so, so, so well Im not sure 
    but you get the idea....but then again I had no point to point out...just
    getting in my typing quota in for the week !

    Nah, he uses it to control the viewing of what's been filmed on the
    tape (like if he's got the camcorder hooked up to the tv & hasn't
    transferred the footage to VHS tape yet, he can watch, rewind, fast
    forward, etc. the camcorder tape via this wonderful little device!)

...so you can hit 'eject' at your seat and the deck will do it's thang while
you get up and walk over.  That way you don't have to stand there and wait

 Several years ago when we lived in Colorado Springs we became friends with 
 some neighbors who attended the same church we did.  Eventually these folks
 became our "adoptive parents" while we lived there.  When we returned to Colo
 Springs after a year in Arizona, they loaned us money for the down payment 
 on our first house.  They always treated us like their family..

 Anyway, as usually happens once we moved back here, our contact became farther
 and farther between.  For the last 2 weeks I've been thinking about them quite
 a bit..I hadn't talked to them in 2 years, and wanted to be sure to send 
 them a card.  Yesterday afternoon I get home from somewhere, and there is a 
 message from Ed, who just called to say hello!  So, I called back and we 
 talked for quite a while.  Really felt good to talk to them again and I think
 I'm going to take a trip out there to pay them a visit.

    I've been informed by people who should know that the Celts were great
    contributers to the formation of ASCII.  When reading Celtic words,
    the letter d often indicates that the following character is actually
    a control character.  Thus, when reading the word "Ceilidh", it can
    be considered Ceilid<ctrl-h>.  Of course, control-h is a backspace,
    causing the d to be erased, leaving one with a pronunciation of
    Ceili, or Kay-lee.  The same principle works with such words as
    Bodhran, etc.
    
    Doesn't this bit of knowledge make your life more fulfilled?  I know it

Celtic words are very difficult to pronounce!  When in Ireland with my
Irish friends, they always get a good chuckle when they ask me to
pronounce some long, strange looking Irish word!

    Gaelic dialects vary from the Irish and Scottish versions.  You'd also
    find variation with the gaelic as written in the Canadian Maritime
    provinces.

cruising up 2A and come to this guy who is driving below the limit.  So, with

Apparently, Mr Acton Policemon did not like my "stunt" as we decided to pull

I had it coming to me, thank god i didn't get a ticket!  Ever since i've had
my mustang, i have a constant need for speed.... it is amazing how you get
drawn into it when you have a car that can get up and go like hell!!  time for
me to mellow out I guess.... my luck is runnin' up !

    engineer who I do work for ..... we say hi and other such small talk
    about the holidays that have just past ..... he hands me what I thought
    at first was some type of drawing or mark-up but to my surprize its a
    very nice picture of Jerry Garcia taken at Worcester in 1988 ..... he
    then tells me that this picture is for me ! wow ! He is a closet head
    and I started making some dubes of the Boston show of last year for him 
    last week, but due to the holiday rush of tape dubing my tape decks
    have been goin' full out so I had not finished them yet.....

well, we spoke on the phone over the weekend; it was a bit tough to talk to
him again, but i'm hopeful that my family situation may eventually return to
a bit more of a normal state; i'd like to be able to visit home sometime

	Father/Son relationships can be very abnormal
	sometimes....I just think it's the way it is!

I last spoke to my dad on the last sunday in March.  We hadn't been on
very good terms, or even spoken since Christmas, when I moved up here.
It was a long and warm conversation, and I felt really good about it then.
It was unusual for us to have been on bad terms, especially since we lived
a mile apart until I moved here at Christmas, 1991.  Anyway, we were ok
when I finished talking to him that night, and I was glad I called him.

He died that Saturday, April 4, suddenly, and without warning or preceding 
illness.

True story.  Carpe diem.

Rich - good for you mon.  I can sort of relate as my relationship with my
mother has really gone down the toilet in the last 12 months, with the height
of it being this past summer.....  i didn't go home and didn't return calls
for 3 months +   ...  things still are not good, but at least i still see some
of my family from time to time...

My philosophy is, just because you're related doesn't mean you have to
like 'em.  ;^}

    funny, parental/offspring relationships...my dad and i never got along
    too well since I was 13 and he went to Viet Nam the first time. Before
    that, we went fishing or hunting or camping almost every weekend, esp.
    in the summer. I copped a real personel attitude about Viet Nam, above
    and beyond the "wrongness" of the whole thing....it had taken my dad
    away and the relationship we had then too. Little did I know, until
    I had kids of my own become teens, that that's just part of growing up...
    if it hadn't have been Viet Nam it would have been something else, maybe
    something  petty, but nevertheless that special relationship between an
    adolescent son and a dad could never stay the same, like i said, that's
    growing up. Now I try and see my parents. They only live 60 miles away,
    still i don't see them often enough, still i can't stand being around
    my parents more thana  few days....drives me crazy!

First of all, I want to apologize for taking Rich's rather upbeat comment
and tying an anchor to it. ;-)

I think it's only a matter of whether you're comfortable with where you
stand right now, with anyone.  I happened to be very close to my dad for
most of my life, and I came within six days of having things end while we
were in the unusual circumstance of not speaking.  Frightening.

It isn't a matter of whether it's better to be close to one or both parents
or not - we seldom have control over that.  It's more a question of
unfinished business.  It's a matter of whether we have done anything about 
the things that we can control, and in time for it to make a difference.

I guess that answers the question of my New Years resolution to do 
something about procrastination.

Yesterday, I got invited to spend a week skiing in Lake Tahoe for the first week 
in March by a friend of mine (who lives in Chicago) who has his timeshare there
that week this year!  Nothing like a free place to stay slope-side at Heavenly
Valley!  Except for maybe the free ticket I got on USelessAir for frequent flyer
miles!!!!  The people who are going are real hardcore partiers, too!

Last Thursday I put my house in the newspaper - up for sale by owner and for 
rent. This is after working on it for a month straight repairing and
cleaning it up after the previous renters destroyed it, I've taken about five
full loads of trash from the place, found homes for aprrox six abandoned cats, 
spent endless days cleaning cat excrement, repainting, re-staining,
re-carpeting, repaing holes in the drywall, more cleaning, hauling more trash
 - Needless to say this past month has been hell.  :^(   

Thurs night I showed the house to this lady that hadn't even seen the 
newspaper ad, but noticed the 8x11 sign I had placed in the window on the 
front door. Friday morning I received a call saying that she would like to 
meet at lunch to make an offer. 

The offer was for slightly more than what I would have accepted :^) 

One day on the Market! No Realtors fees!  

Called the newspaper Friday afternoon and cancelled the ad! 

Today I pick the contract from my lawyer and we might tonight to sign!

Saturday was the anniversary of when Danielle and I met, Sunday was my 
birthday, I'll soon have time to do some skiing!!! 

This has been a fabulous weekend!

Oh yeah, we put Charlie on skis for the first time last Sunday. They were 
plastic skis about 50 cm and about 100 mm wide...

He skiied the trail near the rightmost Poma at Wachusett, and thought it was 
a blast, though he prefered sliding down the hill on his butt.

I hoping he can break my record: I've skied every season since I was 2.

We will only clean up as long as we price our alpha chip so that it is
reachable by the masses, which I understand DEC is NOT planning on doing. Our
pricing is more important that the product. Why should a customer pay $1500
for an Alpha chip now when he knows he can wait the few extra months for
Intel's $499 Pentium? 

I was watching a seminar taped last summer on WNT by Bill Gates and he was
explaining the history of WNT developement. He said: "And then we rescued 
Dave Cutler and his team of developers from the jaws of the vulture 
capitalists at DEC".

Man, did he hit things right on the head with that comment!!!

    Hi People,
    
    	I'm proud to tell you all that on Monday Julie was in a Roller 
    Skating Competition. This was her first competition and she placed 
    11th in the figures (which is about where we figured she place) and 
    she won the Silver Medal in the Solo Dance !!!!!!! when she made the
    cut from 14 to 4 in the eliminations, placing 4th, was unreal but she
    realy hit her dances in the finals (she did fall once but they don't
    count falls at this level). Her Club mate Jillian (she place 2nd after
    the cut) won the gold so it was a thrill for the two of them to sweep 
    the event ! Her coaches were thrilled as well.....myself well I'm one
    very proud Dad :')

    data center exploded, building evacuated.

Closed on my house Tuesday! (Made a good chunk of change - enuf to pay off at
least two out of four lingering school loans)

baby arrives in July/Aug.  Danielle was all smiles! (So was I :^)

    I finally mounted my Franklin Mint Simpsons Collector Plate.  I know
    that not all collector plates increase in value, but I think this one
    will!
    
    The fire didn't even leave a smoking crater of the computer center.  My
    cluster's still not up, but I walked by and just saw a bunch of
    facilities people scratching themselves in bewilderment.  No scorch
    marks even.  The alarm rang at 10 and we couldn't get back in 'til
    12:30.  I spent my time investigating two excellent beer stores in
    Sudbury, MacKinnon's and Kappy's.
    
    There is a lesson to be learned from this: if the alarm rings, take all
    your stuff so you can take off if it's going to be a long wait.  :^)

    small house ! for the past few years I had been living in a one bedroom
    apt in a small complex (sucks) it was fine when I was single, Julie and
    I shared the space (she only stayed over a few times a week)....then
    when I fell in love with Jen and we decided to spend the rest of our
    lives together, we found out that this 1 bedroom was rilly small....we
    started to look around for a place that was in Westboro (to keep Julie
    in the same schools) and we found this place last week ! but were told
    that it was taken....bummin'.....but something inside said we would
    still get this place, and Wed. I was looking thru the paper for places
    and noticed the same phone number ! hummmmm.....na can't be ! so I call
    and sure as sh!t it was ! as I was told the lady who rented the place
    showed up with a Dog ! no dogs was the deal....and as the lady told me
    on the phone that if it was a little dog it would have been sorta ok but
    this was a DOG ! so they gave her her money back and told her that it
    would not work....so fate steps in and hands us this place ! ye-ha !
    
    
    	over the weekend I have been moving most of the small stuff in and
    by this weekend we will be done !!!! (so noe has to worry Im not gonna
    ask for help :'))

    Whelp, my manager just informed me that, effective yesterday, I got a
    raise. However, that doesn't change the fact that, effective friday,
    I'm TFSO'd. Go figure. Geez, nothing like waiting until *the* last 
    minute, huh? At least my severance check will be that much bigger now. 
    Hmmm...I wonder how many people get a raise and laid off in the same

if Dave Inc was deep in the red, and your family was on the verge of financial
disaster, would you still do it?  This money comes out of your bottom line, not
from your insurance company!

this is a poor reason IMO - anyone can BS their salary when interviewing for
another job.  in every interview i've ever gone to, they never once asked me
to show 'proof' of my reported income - and, my friends report the same
results...

	The issue isn't whether or not its going to furthur hurt the bottom 
line of the company, the issue is did the employee's contribution to the 
company warrant compensation.  If word got around that a company doesn't 
fairly compensate its employees, it will not attract highly skilled workers, 
or keep the highly skilled workers it has.  This has happened to EDS and they 
are in trouble big time.

I'm afraid I'm with JC on this one...

I'm sure Ger deserved the raise and I'm glad Ger got a raise,

I have to disagrre here - the main reasong for the layoffs in the first place
is the bottonm line.  Employees contributions to the company are compensated
through salary and wages.  Rewards for contributions are given through
promotions and salary increases.  IMO, these rewards are given in order to
benefit the company as well as the employee.  These rewards are given as
incentive for continued high performance for the employee, and to match the 
industry in order to keep good performers on board.  Rewards should be given in
the case where there is mutual benefit to the employee and the corporation.

If an employee is leaving the company, there's no mutual benefit.

This has already happened here at DEC.  Job security is at an all time low,
salary increases are few and far betwwen, highly skilled workers can find
better paying jobs with more security outside of DEC (two of our groups most
senior technical people recently left to find work with MCI, better pay 
more security).  DEC isn't in a position to ATTRACT more people right now, it
needs to keep the good people it has while trimming an excessive work force.

Giving and raise to someone who is leaving the company, instead of giving
the same incentive to someone you want to stay with the company is just plain
stupid.  

But in anycase - Congrat's to Ger, I'm glad for you and am glad to see you 
get the rewards what were promised.

 As a manager I would do the same thing (reward someone's performance despite
 pending layoffs/plant closings).  They put forth the effort and sacrificed to
 make me and the company successful.  I would fight for the employee as far as
 I could to see that they got the increase..I couldn't sleep at night were I
 not to do so.

    my job because my work wasn't valued, I lost it because the entire
    plant is closing. There are people in KAO, SHR and CXO who will still

For the sake of fairness to you, that why I say I am glad that you did get the
raise.  I do not debate that you deserve it.  

But what makes more sense for DEC, having a more satisfied/valued ex-employee
or a more satisfied/valued current employee?  I know you lost your job as the
result of factors beyond your control, but from a corporate perspective, this
is irrelevant. Like I said - In My Corporate Perspective (IMCP tm) - your salary
is what you earned - You did a good job and you got paid for it. There are
times in everyone's career that we perform above levels that we're currently 
being paid.  We do this in the *hope* of more pay and continued employment.
IMCP - a raise is something that both rewards for past performace AND provides
incentive for a continued high level of performance as well as the incentive to
continue this high level of employment at DEC.  An employee that's leaving the
company simply doesn't fit into the second half of that equation. It's just
that the "new DEC" is more concerned with what's makes most sense for the
company, even if some of the high ethical values of the past are compromised,
and I am afraid this is what makes the most sense in order for DEC to return to
profitability. 

Please don't hold this against me - just my opinions from a corporate
perspective.

From a personal perspective - I'm glad you got the raise, because, I think 
a person should be rewarded for the contributions they have provided.  It feels
better to me to see some of the "old DEC" come through and do something that 
seems ethically the right thing to do, although it may not make the most
sense for the company.  

I am glad you got a raise that you and your manager felt you deserve.

    Heck Ger, I'm glad you got the raise, but it netted less?  You pulling

Well, Glenn is doing a good job saying what I would have said.  And like
Glenn, it is not the subject [Gerry] that I'm debating, it is the policy.
I'm sure Gerry deserved it - I'm not arguing this at all.  And, I'd entertain
a raise as well if I were getting laid off!

I agree with both sides of this issue.

The raise-in-conjunction-with-layoff is the right thing to do from
an ethical, do-the-right-thing, take-care-of-your-workers point of view.
It's dumb from the "bottom-line" point of view.

Personally, I think it's THE correct thing to do from an overall
perspective, because the "bottom-line"-only mode of thinking is
short sighted and isn't gonna do the company much good (imho).  
Fix the problems, not the symptoms.  Bottom-line thinking only fixes
symptoms...

this is not the issue i'm talking about!  i'm talking about the policy of

think they'd support giving raises to people who are getting downsized in

these tough times when your job might be next, you're gonna wanna to what you
can to ensure employment - and, depending on where you are in this company,
that might mean not giving raises to those who are slated to be cut.

When it comes to rewarding performance there is only one category to 
consider: all employees. This is probably the law, even. If Digital separated 
those targeted for layoffs from those who weren't there would be pandemonium 
among the ranks, lawsuits, and walkouts everywhere. What would stop Digital 
from saying: "Everyone is a target for layoffs, so we're not going to give 
any raises at all, just so that we can protect out stockholders concern that 
we be overly compensating anyone who might be getting layed off"????

Dollars are an asset, but so are the employees, and if they weren't, there 
would be no layoff packages at all.  

BTB, JC, you asked me to separate Gerry from the circumstances and insert
Jane Doe. Its still the same: If Jane was up for a raise, she should get it.
What you should do is try to separte the fact that she's getting layed off
from the fact that she's still a Digital employee, and as such entitled to
all the rights and benifits that any other Digital employee is subject to. 

Well, we obviously have different schools of thoughts on this matter, and
I respect yours, but I ain't gonna change the way I think on this matter.

Kind of good news/bad news on our end.  We too got a METPAY refund.  For 
homeowners only though.  it seems as though there is a state law in NH that 
sais companies can't give dividends on auto insurance. )*^&%)*&%(&

Other real good news is that our youngest son, Alex, started walking last 
Saturday.  He is everywhere now. (I guess this is good news/bad news too:-)

The law could be that METPAY can't *selectively* give refunds to *only*
DEC employees in NH.  That is, they can give dividends to *all* it's NH
insurees or *none* of it NH insurees.  The MET refunds are *only* for DEC
employees.

Just a wild guess...

FWIW, just got back $200+ from my homeowners ins. back... $-)

    $122.00...and spent it rilly quick ! :') (this is METPAY...and this
    total is just a few $$ more then my renters cost for the year so I get

this sold it for me to:  One Stop Shopping:  banking, insurance, etc. all
auto-withdrawn.... easy to deal with;  don't have to drive all over the place
to chase people down.

plus, 5% savings on auto ins. thru dec (MA has fixed rates, so, you'll get the
best rate here) ... and, with this year's 12% dividend, that makes for a 
17% savings on my car ins. !!!

    Metpay is great for all kinds of stuff, but not boats. One speeding
    ticket in your automobile and they discontiue insurance on your boat!
    This sort of seems twisted when you figure the max speed ever in my
    boat was 9.24 kts, about 10 mph. But they don't care what you sail, if 
    you have a ticket in your car, no insurance on your boat. 
    	So insure your boat through BOAT/US  and metpay works great for
    everything else. 
    
    	Paid my boat insurance a couple weeks ago, Too bad all insurance
    wasn't as cool as the boat people. A truly pleasant experience after
    Bob visited my boat.

    with all the problems that arise without having to deal with a
    landlord, cook in a kitchen that has counter space and on and on and
    on! I am wicked psyched, this is great stuff!!!!

My car passed inspection w/ flying colors yesturday.

    Speaking of cars, I'll be picking mine up from the shop in a few
    minutes.  It was due for inspection in March and, knowing it needed big
    time work, I couldn't afford to have the work done so the car had been
    sitting for over a month.  I still can't afford it but I've
    "Discovered" a way to pay the piper.
    
    New rack and pinion mechanism, two new tires, rear brakes, alignment
    and filters.  Cost $565.00.  Ouch!
    
    In the last two years I've had the following work done on it:
    	front and rear brakes
    	new exhust (sp) system
    	new cooling system (warrentee) (sp)
    	new engine (also warrentee) (sp)
     	
    As you can see, not only don't I know a lot about cars, I
    can't spell the words either.
    
    However, I am so glad to back on the track.

    I have the car that the Consumer Reports Buyers Guide rates as a "don't
    be a fool and buy this car" auto.  It was poorly rated as a new and
    used car for every year it was in production.  It was/is known for
    having problems with the front end and the engine/cooling systems.
    
    It is a Pontiac 6000 but right now its more like a Pontiac 4500.
    
    da ve, what you said is exactly my attitude.  I've had it for 6+ years
    and only have 77K on it.  With all the new stuff I figure (yeah right)
    that I'll have it for another 6 years, if'n the body holds up.

		The Case Of The Lost Tickets  -  Albany 1993

	This was us in Albany on March 27th.  Omigawd - *I* (librarian and
	organizer, extraordinaire) LOST our tickets between Troy and
	Jeremy's Inn, Albany.  I mean I had the tickets at 1:30 pm as we drove
	down the Troy_hill (John always says "where are the tickets?" , I always
	say, smugly, "I have them, right here, in my calendar, for both nights,
	see?").  

	So after we checked into Jeremy's and unpacked a few essentials (2:30)
	John said, "Why don't you give me tonights tix and I'll put them in my 	
	wallet."  

	"Surrrre", I said, reaching for my calendarRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. aaaaaaccck
	
	Gone.  It had vanished.  Not possible we said in our most logical 
	manner.  So we proceeded to do what any logical, clear thinking people
	would do :

	Tear the motel suite apart.  Run up and down the hallways and stairs	
	all the while frantically searching.  Run wildeyed to the motel office 
	asking if anyone had turned in the calendar (a mighty nifty one, btw 
	- an Ansel Adams daytimer-type) only to be told "no calendar".  Run 
	hysterically (this is possible) back to the room and tear it apart 
	again.  Empty all drawers and luggage.
	
	Run wailing to the truck and move the seat/strip the stuff out of
	the back/check the glove box.  Go back to the room and tear it apart 
	again - including the refrig and the cabinets.  Look out the window 
	to see if you could die if you jumped .. doesn't look like it.  hear 
	John say - 'let's just go to Hill Street, we can have a good time 
	anyway'.  Start to lose it.  

	Suddenly comes a knock at the door.  Two women are standing there
	holding the calendar saying "Is this yours?".  John starts hopping up 
	and down, "yesyesyesyes,thankyouthankyou".  I look around the corner 
	and begin to cry with relief.  She said, "I thought it might be 
	important, I looked inside and saw the envelope with tickets".  Just 
	then the phone rang and it was the desk clerk saying a woman had found 
	a calendar and she was walking door - to - door through the motel to 
	find who owned it.  We thanked her a million times and didn't even look
	to see if the tix were there (until later), we just knew they would be. 

	She had found the calendar in the parking area under the wheel of
	her car!!! near where we had first unloaded a few things.  I had 
	apparently dropped it out of my load of stuff on the first trip to 
	the room.  Then we moved the truck closer to our room.  
	
	aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh.

As someone who's had three too many experiences with 'missing' or forgotten
tickets, I sympathize... ;-)

    1.  Left tix to 11-20-92 Phish show at home.  Realized it half way to
        Albany.  Turned around and drove like JC.  Made it there 1/2 way
        through the 1st set...
    2.  Tickets fell out of wallet (in car) for 12-31-92 Phish show (New
        Years) and stayed in car while we rode the T from Riverside to
        Northeastern.  Fortunately Rich bailed us out with his extras, but
        in using them, GerG got stuck without one -- he had also left his
        tix behind...
    3.  Forgot ticket to the most recent Kinks show, had to go home and get
        it.  Fortunately, we made it back before the show started, and got
        to miss the opening band, ;-)

    We just got our permits from the US Park Service to hike 
    The Grand Canyon next weekend.  Yahoo!!!!  Gives me butterflys
    in the stomach and a grate big smile on my face just thinking
    about it.   Guess I'll get to find out what makes that big hole 
    in ground just so special first hand, finally.

    We got the permit to leave from the south rim on the Kibab Trail.
    It is a 9 1/2 mile trail and descends 4000+ feet. The trails are 
    quite steep and gravelly, no real technical climbing.  We plan on 
    staying down in the hole for 2  days.  We are then coming back up the
    Boucher trail.  Our main concern is water.  the current temps on floor
    are 100+ during the day.  The folks I am hiking with want to start the 
    descent well before dawn.
    
    The other trail names we were given were Garnite Rapid and Monument 
    Creek.

    Hmmm, you need permits to hike the Canyon?  Is this something new, or
    did we just do things wrong?  It was about 11 years ago, and we only 
    went part way down and then back up again, on the Hermit trail
    I believe.  I did end up proposing to my wife while on the trek
    back up.  Her first reply was "Not today!"  ;-)

when i was there (summer 1991) i think the rule was that you need a permit
to stay overnight in the canyon; day trippers can come and go as they please

we started out not too long after dawn, hiked down about half the height of
the canyon and out to a ledge with a nice view (Horeshoe Mesa, perhaps?) for
an early lunch; the National Park service said to allow about twice as long
to get back up as to get down, but it actually took us 15 minutes LESS going
back up; i guess that's because we took a rather steep and strenous route
where you have to watch your steps quite carefully on the way down

they STRONGLY urge people not to attempt to go all the way down and back up
in a single day, but at the rate we were going (approx. twice the rate the
NPS figures as an average) we could have done it and made it back up to the
rim just around sunset

water was a big worry; we carried a bit more than a gallon per person; to
ensure that we'd conserve (and to lighten our load), about half-way down we
hid a gallon of water off to the side of the trail; we retrieved it on our
way back up (we would have been mighty bummin' if someone else had retrieved
it before us)

i'd love to go back there for a more extended period of time; at least spend
one day hiking down, one day hiking in the canyon, and another day hiking up
a different trail

Permits aren't required if you stay in one of the bunkhouses; That's
actually not such a bad way to do it since you don't have to haul camping
gear. I don't even remeber how much they cost...

I can't believe I'm saying this! Anyhow, thats the way I did it because
permits weren't available and back then I was incapable of planning such
things as an arrival and departure time. fwiw, the roughest part is the
descent, imo... 

In less than 6 hours Pam and I will be Homeowners for the first time:-):-):

Ok, all you new homeowners are required to go out 
and rent "The Money Pit" as your introductory training
film.  Ongoing education is also offered each week on
a tv show called "Home Improvement".

Pay no attention to those PBS home improvement shows, like
"This Old (Expensive) House" or "Hometime".  All they 
can teach you is that, in the long run, it's cheaper to
pay someone else to do the work, because between the tools
you'll need to buy, the outrageously expensive parts and
gizmos that they use and you can't afford,  and then 
having to go back and fix the things you did wrong, you 
might as well hire a professional and get it right the 
first time.

I just hope none of you were unlucky enough to buy a
brand new house - they're the worst kind! ;-) ;-)

    Hey, let me jump in here with my GOOD news.  I finally sold my house in
    Hudson, NH (some of you will remember a party or two there that were
    killers) and will close on that house on June 25th.  Not_Only_That!!
    John and I also just bought a house in Wilton, NH (original town of the
    original Jerri English's PITW (Party_In_The_Woods) back in 1987 (?).
    It's a great little town which also boasts a $4 movie theater and NO
    MacDonalds (hear that, TMS?) !  And we move into that house on June
    25th.  oooops  - seems to be a time conflict :-) no problem, we'll just
    slip into anti-matter and be on our way.

    Congrats all you new homeowners.  I'll second Tim's reply, though I've
    yet to see the Money Pit.  Latest project is attempting to fix up
    the basement to make it usable.  I've got most of it waterproofed,
    but I'm working on a few cracks in the concrete before I finish it 
    off and start thinking about wallboards....  
    Extra congrats to Carol, the sell, buy experience can be tough, 
    especially in this market (or are things moving better in

    Off to the grand canyon in 4 hours!! Hike down Hermit Trail.  Camp at
    Hermit rapids Saturday night.  Check out the Vishnu formations.  Hike
    to Monument Creek and then camp at Granite Rapids Monday night. We'll
    probably hike back up Hermit.  Current temps during day on the floor
    are around 101.  Yow!

Glennnn_who's got our rental home on the market, fixing up our current
	home with new carpeting and interior/exterior painting, 
	need to mow the lawns at both houses, while finalizing 
	building plans on our new home, getting a construction loan 
	approved and closing June 14'th on a 5 acre lot - Phew!

    Finding out that my sister (married to one of your favorite
    Dead noters) is expecting :-) My mom, with a month-old grandson
    and 2 more grandkids on the way, is in hyperspace :-)

    The sun is shining and the wild flowers are blooming like crazy here 
    in Colorado.  I went for a walk last night and was beaming with joy as 
    I walked along in the flowers.   I plucked a few stamens from some 
    Indian Paintbrushes and nibbled on the ends,  just like honeysuckle!

    I started to say Indian paints are poisonous, but the hummers like the
    flowers, maybe I'm thinkin about the plant parts??
    
    But yer right, the prarie flowers are burstin out with all the rain
    we;ve had. Lupines, paints, bluebells, etc. But at 10,000 feet, the
    aspen leaves are barely poppin out, the wild onions are just up with no
    blooms yet, the paints are up but not a sign of flowers yet. The
    hummmers really appreciate the feeders since flowers are rare up there
    now. My kids had a snowball fight while wading in a mountain lake that
    was surronded by snow...a little too cool for me, but I'm an old fart
    No flowers at all around the beaver ponds and streams yet at that
    altitude. BUT IT"S COMIN!!!!!!!!!

    Tourists Rescue Suicidal Woman At Niagra Falls (slowly I turned!)
    
    Niagra Falls, NY (AP)- A woman who tried to kill herself by going
    over Niagra Falls was rescued by tourists who pulled her out at the
    brink of the waterfalls, police said today.
    
     Once in the water, the woman apparently changed her mind about killing
    herself and was grabbing at rocks as she approached the falls, said
    Filiberto Nieves, an officer with the Niagra Frontier Park Police.
    
     The woman told police that she plans to contact her rescuers to thank
    them,Nieves said.
    
     Police said Frank Kennedy, 36, of Elco, Pa. saw the 37-year-old woman
    enter the upper Niagra River rapids about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Kennedy,
    with the help of four other tourists, dragged her to shore. The other
    rescuers were Raymond Kennedy, 58, and Steven Kennedy, 14, also of
    Elco; Jason Roy, 23, of Seekonk, Ma.; and Tom Newman, 35, of Pawtucket,
    R.I.
    
     The Kennedys were vacationing at the falls and Roy and Newman were in
    the area for a Grateful Dead concert, Mr. Nieves said.
    
     It's unbelievable what they did, said Paul Colangelo of the New York
    State Parks Service.
    
     "If the woman went over the falls, she would not have survived," the
    officer said. "There is nothing but rock at the bottom of the falls."
    
     The parks department gave the rescuers park staff t-shirts and passes
    to Niagra Falls attractions.
    
     Judith Roy, the mother of Jason Roy, said her son was a former
    standout member of the Seekonk High School swim team.
    
     "I think when I see him, I'll give him a hug and then kill him,"she
    said from her Seekonk home.

To all those interested:

	Fermat's Last Theorem has been proven true!!!- by Andrew Wiles,
an English mathematician at Princeton.   There is an article on this 
on the front cover of today's New York Times.  The proof appears
legitimate since many of the big shots in the field were present
to hear the lecture.   

	The proof is apparently rather deep and involves quite a
bit of the modern theory of elliptic curves, modular forms, and
algebraic geometry.

Fermat was a lawyer in the 17th century (1601-1665) who dabbled in mathematics.
He was famous for writing down theories in the margins of his books without
putting down any proofs.  After his death they found this in one of his
books.
             x,y,z,n where n > 2
             x,y,z != 0   (well he didn't really use C notation ;-)
             x^^n + y^^n = z ^^n

In the de Fermat conference room (which I sit just outside of ;-)
One of the plaques reads,
    "In the margin of his copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica Fermat wrote his
famous last Theorem.
    'To divide a cupe into two other cubes, a fourth power or in general
any power whatever into two powers of the same denomination above the second
is impossible, and I have assuredly found an admirable proof of this but the
margin is too narrow to contain it.' "

I'm not sure if that's supposed to be possible or impossible above, as the
equation doesn't seem to fit the paragraph, but that's what was on the
plaque.  Kind of makes you wonder if he made a mistake or there really is a
simpler proof.

    I think .1658 has it a little backwards;  the conjecture (now maybe a
    theorem) was that there are NO integers x,y,z,n such that n>2 and
    x,y,z all > 0, where x^^n + y^^n = z^^n.
    
    It seems really counter-intuitive, because there are jillions of
    examples with n=2 -- like (3x3) + (4x4) = (5x5) (still used to check
    square corners on foundations).   
    
    The really feel-good news is that if, tomorrow morning, you wake up
    and think of two integers whose seventh power adds up to the seventh
    power of a third integer, you'll be even more famous than Mr. Wile!
    
    This reminds me of of some other feel-good math trivia, contained in my
    topology textbook in college.  The otherwise horridly dry text
    contained the following "real-world" of the properties of smooth
    manifolds of degree one:  
    
      "if your head was a donut, you could comb your hair without leaving a 
       bald spot."

    Brew?  Good vibes that way then!  My wife almost bought me a home
    brewing kit from there for Father's Day, but said she didn't want
    to drive all the way to Charlton (hah, aside from Ken Hannan, we 
    probably live closer to Charlton than most.)  I told her they
    do free deliveries in a radius I'm sure we fall under, but I think
    she had already gotten something else (new Bruce Hornsby, with

    yep, the same Bruce...  he is on the verge of something that has a LOT
    of potential...  most of my bodily appendages are crossed and i'm
    vibing like crazy...  and to make this an even more "good karma" kind
    of thing, he's looking into contracting with a company that works
    exclusively with "challenged" adults to do his packaging work...
    
    as for the dips, his products are essentially specially prepared spice 
    packages (all natural too i believe) that you mix up yourself....
    his slasa can be made as spicy or as mild as you like by changing
    the quantity of tomatoes and stuff that you add it to...  neat tasting
    and versatile...  i like 'em all!  (though the dill one is a little 
    too heavy on the dill for me, but that can be fixed by adding more
    yogurt! :^)...

    Must be the season...
    
    My brother called from Australia about an hour ago to tell me I'm an
    uncle again. William Joseph (there's that name again) Hughes came into
    the world a little over 8 pounds (hasty conversion from metric). This
    was a very tense pregnancy, as their second born did not survive. The
    family can now breath a collective sign of relief and get on with being

    	I just got back from the Eliminatin round and Julie tied for 2nd,
    so now she will skate in the medal round tonight at 7pm !!!! if she
    places in the top 4 out of the 6 that made it to the medal round she
    will be Nationals bound !!!!!

    	Well I just passed on the well wishes to Julie who just called me
    to tell me with such glee that she place 17th in figures (which means
    she does not have to do them at the Nationals :')) she has done well in
    them but the dance is her event ! I brought in a video today of last
    night to show my co-workers....who have had to see all of the events
    she has been in :') but what was cool was it finally hit me ! she
    really won ! the rush was so much it brought tears to my eyes !
    
    well Julie thanks you all for the vibes you sent her yesterday, she
    said they worked ! just before the elimination round I told her that
    people would be thinking of her with sending good vibes her way....she
    replied to me...."Oh like Luke Skywalker and may the force be with
    you"....:')

Congrats to Julie and you must feel proud, eh Dad?  I have a friend who
was active in roller skating competition when he was younger. 
Don't know how far hw went with it though.  I do remember one summer
when I was going out with his sister, they both took me roller skating
(I of the wobbly ankles!) a day or two after I had split my head open 
on the bottom of the pool.  Maybe they were trying to tell me something!

I always spend within my means up to this point.  If i don't have the bread
to buy something, I don't buy it.  I don't carry a wallet, hence, i rarely
have my CC w/ me (just cash and my license), and believe me, this has saved
me a few times (imagine walking into a place like tower records with a good
buzz on - you want _everything_  :-)!

oh, i always spend within my means, but i just don't carry around a lot of
cash (certainly not enough for a pair of speakers); i use credit cards as a
convenience; i always pay the balance in full, the only exception being when
i got into a car accident while in school and wasn't sure if i could pay all
of the repairs and get through the rest of the semester

I'm not kidding.  I'm paying it off, though.  I understand the concept of
interest.  ;^)

Sigh.... We just had the house re-roofed (and the damn house is only 6 years
old!  But the damn thing leaks all over and the roofer showed us how 
a large number of shingles are cracked) Filled a new fish tank, then drained
it when we decided the dresser it was on wasn't really sturdy enough. And
then last night we found out the damn water bed was leaking again (soft
sided with internal tubes, so it was only one or two tubes that were leaking).
We've been plauged with water problems, but I guess I'm glad I don't live
near the Mississippi...  All a draining effect on the pocket book too.
Well, hopefully the things will end at three.  We hope the roof leaks 
are sealed, the fish tank's been moved to a solid stand (though I might 
have to think about secure it somewhat as it has a higher center of gravity
than I care for) and I think the water bed is on the way out.
Never a dull moment.

    Ya...and i've got a vibration in the back end of my truck...new tires,
    new shocks, new brakes....next is a tranny checkup and u-joints (the
    garage says they aren't the problem or they would have been gone long
    ago)......sigh, so many potential problems, so little $$$$.....

    He called on Friday evening and sounds just terrific!  Work is fine,
    life is fine.  His big news is that he is engaged to be married!!
    
    Bob had been going out with a woman he met through a classified.  She
    got transfered to Alaska and, before she left, introduced Bob to her
    friend Chen (pronounced Chin).  Instant attraction!
    
    Bob would love to hear from folks.  Also, he missed mailorder and
    Ticketshafter for the Eugene dates and would be most grateful for any
    help we could give.

    My last count was 4 donuts and 2 x-large coffees.  Then I drifted off

    I pulled out onto the street I live on this morning on my way to work. 
    I drive around a corner and notice this inatimate object lying in the
    middle of the road.  It was too big to drive over so I started driving
    around it, being quite careful because the corner is "blind" and
    teacherous.  As I drive by, I noticed it was a womens pocketbook with
    the wallet hanging out and credit cards, paper, change, etc. all around
    it.  I'm like "Wow! That's a pocketbook!!"  Without any thought , I
    turn around, pull over, get out in the pouring rain and gather up the
    stuff on the ground, except for a little change.  I'm glad people were
    driving slow because of the heavy rain, because I woulda been hit for
    sure.
    
    I drive over to a side street.  As I was leaning over to check out the
    id (many credit cards!), a cop zooms by with it's light flashing.  I'm
    like "Hey!  I need you."  
    
    I took the bag to the police station.  Come to find out, a lady had it
    ripped off her shoulder at the Honey Dew donut shop at the top of my
    road.  This place is an extremely busy place in the morning, too. 
    Someone had some balls to do that!  They took all her cash only, it
    appeared to me.  In fact, the cop at the station was on the horn with
    the cop taking the report from the lady at the donut shop when I
    brought it in. The cop took my name and number.  It'd be nice to hear a
    thank you.  I feel pretty good anyway!!  Got a big hand shake from the
    cop.  That's different!  
    
    A morning to remember!
