It wasn't Lou Gramm singing when they were opening for Rush. Can't
remember if it was Roll the Bones or Presto, now...

Lou Gramm isn't in the band. Billy Sheehan on bass, some unknown on
drums, and the former guitarist from Racer X. The singer is realitively
unknown too. Never heard of him before Mr. Big.

I heard at the weekend that Paul Gilbert (lead guitarist) received
a bad electric shock while doing a gig. The hand drill he was
playing the guitar malfunctioned and gave him a shock that knocked
him across the stage. He had to go to hospital, but was okay.

like a Makita drill.

Yep, to get an idea, listen to the beginning of Poundcake by Van Halen.
Eddie does the same thing. neat stunt and it sounds wild!

I think a neat in-concert effect would be to put your guitar
(while plugged in, of course) through a planer. Sure, you'd have to
restring it afterwards, but the effect would kill 'em out in the
aisles. :)
Of course, lugging a planer around would be harder than lugging
a B-3. But hey, anything for the show, right?

| The "Poundcake" intro and the Mr. Big tricks aren't the same.
VANHALEN/Drill: Eddie uses the pickups on his guitar to grab the sound
of the drill.
MR. BIG/Drill: Paul Gilbert has a jig that holds several picks, then
uses this contraption to play notes. Pretty impressive.

He had an actual drill when I saw him. They joked about his hair
getting caught in it.
Of course, things change.

| I wonder if hand and power tools will be added to the Berklee
curriculum...
As for the group, the one song I've heard is the video that's been
getting Mtv/VH1 rotation. Sing-songy is about the best thing I can say
for it. I think they should all stroll around the mulberry bush in the
video to really give the song it's due.
Everyone keeps telling me Billy Sheean (sp?) is wonderful and I keep
wondering when he'll do something that lives up to his reputation. I
wonder why anyone would *want* to do two-handed tapping on a bass, but
now I understand. It's cause the other guy has the power drill tied up.
Let me know if I've actually missed something here...

| Brian, you have ... 8^)
Check out "Shy Boy" on David Lee Roth's "Eat "em And Smile" CD ... some
serious bassage going on there. The newest Mr. Big song is NOT
representative of this band (but neither is "More Than Words" by
Extreme ...).
RE: Drills.
Yes, both guys use drills, the application is different.

Brian,
Also check out Sheehan's group (pre-Roth) called Tallas.
They had a few songs with really rippin' bass parts.

reverse to untangle his hair. Perhaps the guy should audition for
Spinal Tap at this rate?
