| I've been playing in a band called the Hubcaps for five years now. The
original band was a quartet, guitar, tenor sax, drums and myself on
bass. The tenor sax player soon had to drop out and we started a habit
of putting together a twin tenor lineup using a pool of musicians
dependiong on who was available on a given night. After three years,
our original drummer, Mickey Bones, left and we replaced him with Jim
Cunniff and continued. Recently Mickey returned and we have been
performing both as the Hubcaps and the Bones of Contention (long story,
but a name change may be in the offing).
The style of the band is R&B with a strong New Orleans influence with
forays into reggae, rockabilly, C&W, and other "roots" musics. We
have had a house gig at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge, MA, a small
Irish bar, for the entire five years. Actually, we formed in order to
play that house gig.
We have recorded three albums for the Swamptone label. Two were issued
under our drummer's name, one under our guitarists's name.
The lineup, more or less:
Brian Rost bass, vocals
Peter Wetherbee guitar, vocals
Mickey Bones drums, vocals
Our current pool of tenor sax players:
Scott Shetler, Myanna Pontoppidan, Gordon Beadle, Andrew Clark
Recordings on the Swamptone label:
Mickey Bones "Mickey Bones"
Mickey Bones "Bonetones"
Pete Wetherbee "Joe Pete's Hubcap Experience"
Brian
P.S. We always like to have folks sit in and jam with us, if you want
to stop down and play a few tunes, feel free!

| I've been working with a band for the last 6 months or so in the
Burlington Vermont area called "Blues for Breakfast". We've been doing
a lot of club and concert work. The band is affiliated with the big
local FM station up here, WIZN, which also hosts a Sunday morning blues show
with radio personality and band member, "Mr. Charlie" Frazier. The
other guys in the band have been playing the circuit up here for 18
years or so, appearing in several of the area's more successful bands.
We've got a series of concerts in Battery Park lined up and the annual
blues cruise on lake Champlain lined up for this summer. We also plan
to open for a few larger bands at various dives here and there.
The band plays a mix of traditional blues, jazz, R+B, and originals.
The pieces consist of Bass, Guitar, Drums, Keys, Vibes, Alto, Tenor,
and occasionally Bari Sax, flute, Harmonica, and congas (but never all
at once).

| I play guitar, pedal steel, and keys in a country band called Goldrush.
We're a four piece group based in Leominster, Mass. The other
instruments in the band are guitar/fiddle/mandolin, bass, and drums.
Everyone sings lead.
We work steadily: our band is booked every weekend through the end of
September. Werecently were nominated as best country band for the
upcoming MCMA (Mass Country Music Association) awards ( probably a ploy
to get us to play free showcases =8^) ).
WQe have a mailing list, which really helps the draw at new clubs. Our
following is not huge, but we can always be counted on to bring a
couple of dozen party animals to any club we play.
We basically play the current country hits straight off of TNN and CMT.
I'd say our strongest aspect is the three or four part harmony that is
really the band's trademark. Speaking personally, playing steel is a
gas.

| Yes, I have recorded at Sound Techniques. It is a great place. They
have two rooms. One has a large record area with a Neve board, the
other room is great for mixing and over-dubbing and has a 40 input
SSL. There is a common machine room next to the SSL room that has
Sony (I think) 24 tracks. I'm pretty sure they have a Digital
transport as well. Pretty good goodies in the SSL room for mixing.
My only complaint with the place is that they were a bit thin on
mics, but they had most of what I wanted. For vocals though, I
tend to prefer some pretty exotic stuff whereas they only had the
usual Nuemann U87s.
The staff were fantastic to work with. They were extremely friendly,
patient and accomodating. I engineered/produced the project I did
there, but I was assisted/babysat by Ken, who was excellent.
The price is steep (in the $150-$200 per hour range), but if the record
company's footing the bill, then I highly recommend this studio.
Also, check out the anatomically correct inflatable sheep in the window
of the porn shop right next to the entrance for Sound Techniques! We
got a few good laughs out of that one! (Also, WBCN's studios are
diagonally across the street).
Parking can be a little tough on Boylston street, but the studio does
provide it free. If you're standing in front of the studio facing the
street, the parking lot is a across the street to your right, a block
up. Park behind the gas station on the corner and tell the guy you're
recording at Sound Techniques. Don't forget to ask for a validation
sticker before you leave.

| Re: record company paying the recording bill
Aren't recording costs part of the recoupables that a record
company charges the band against any future royalties?
Bob, did your band specifically discuss this point, during
negotiation?

| I'm in an A'capella group called C'est Wot. We're a 4 member group, just
starting to do the rounds here in Sydney. Doing primarily weddings, and small
gigs at the moment, but have done `warmup' support for Tommy Emmanuel and
James Morrison.
