Never watched it, its not available in the UK, unless you have
cable TV which is not that widespread yet. The best video programs
i've seen in the UK over the past few years are/were The Max
Headroom Show and the Chart show.
The Chart Show is great, no presenters just the vid's and some
good graphics in between, plus its not just the top 40 but the
dance charts and for a change the Indies aswell.

all last year, it seemed to be on a par with the majority of American
television (not a compliment, I'm afraid). The "games" on MTV are
absolute rubbish.

Otherwise I never bother watching it. There's too much junk between

Part of the problem, I think, is that they don't cater to us,
reasonably adult, reasonably intelligent folks. They direct
themselves to the young teenager, again imo, so we've lost any
chance of seeing the format we've been used to.
It's trash.

| I still hang on MTV every now and then when channel hopping.
Their alternative music half hour (I forget the name) on at about
11:30PM Eastern is OK.
Also, I like catching their hour long concerts. I posted this question
in another notesfile, but does anyone know when MTV shows their
concerts nowadays. It used to be Saturday evenings. Is that still
true? I'm looking for a Sugarcubes concert that I heard would be
broadcast sometime in January. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

The BBCs new show SNUB seems to be OK, dealing mainly with the
sort of bands that don't get so much tv recognition. Any show that
starts with The House of Love doing Destroy The Heart has got to
be alright with me!

It's Mondays at 7 pm on BBC2 and repeated at a late night time later
in the week. Could be Sunday but not sure. Well worth watching for
House Of Love. They do Man To Child as well. Brill. Got it on
video for posterity. Also included Cookie Crew, Yello & Fugazi.
Bodes well for the future.

I think future shows are going to cover Sonic Youth, Wedding Present,
Dinosaur Jr, and loads of obscure goodies. Is this the show we'veall
been waiting for?
Mike
PS. Did anyone watch the chart show 88 round up over Crimble.
There were a few good videos, but one fact that stuck out was that
they do charts based on musical type , eg dance, heavy metal, but
the indie charts are based on label type. This means that the indie
top ten for 88 was full of Kylie Minogue, and a couple of the years
dance hits (which were also covered in the dance charts). This
means that bands such as The Wedding Present, Sugarcubes, House
of Love, etc , who have had quite large 'indie hits' were not shown.
I think this is very unfair. Perhaps they should have some musical
category of their own (Peelie type music, perhaps?)

prententious cr*p! (That's bound to upset some people...)
Won't Auntie Beeb ever get it right ? We either have to endure the
sycophantic commercialism of Top Of The Pops, or at the other end of
the scale, the cacophonic SNUB with music(?!) that probably only
appeals to 3 people in the whole country! What about the rest of us?
There's a wealth of good non-chart music in this country without
having to scrap the bottom of somebody's shoe to find acts, which is
obviously where SNUB's offerings last night came from...

In the Y.T.V. region there's this Music Box programme thats on at
3.00am every Wednesday...it's along similar lines to Snub...but
it's on for an hour so it covers twice as much...you usually get
2-3 interviews each week and something like 8 videos. Stuff from
recent weeks include a feature on Sisters of Mercy, The Fall, James,
Spacemen 3, Edwin Collins, The Hypnotics, The Wolfhounds plus a
special feature on all the bands that have been involved with the
Creation label (ie House of Love!)...loads and loads of goodies.

in their schedules NOW!

world doesn't all go around loving each other does it? The connection between TV
and records and violence must be *very* loose indeed, since the connection between
TV and records and love should be much more prominent but seems to be non-existent.
It is just more lucrative to publicize acts of violence than it is to publicize
acts of love.

306.53 | MTV reviewed | JURA::PELAZ::MACFADYEN | just to be different | Wed Feb 02 1994 10:56 | 37 |
| Having worked at other sites a few times recently, I've been able to watch
MTV in the evenings at my hotel. First impression is, it's great just to be
able to tune into an endless series of pop vids since, let's face it, the
money spent per minute in a video must be much greater than most of the
junk filling other tv channels. But after a few hours of MTV I'm not so
impressed.
It's relentlessly mainstream, being dominated by a few current singles in
heavy rotation, the big-selling artists, and hits from the past decade
we've all heard too often already. There are some interesting programs,
such as Sunday evening's 120 Minutes (MTV's Indie ghetto) but too few and
often quite late. The dance program is on at some obscenely late hour.
After midnight any night you might see some more obscure stuff.
There's a total lack of critical comment, or indeed comment of any kind.
Even CNN can seem mentally stimulating after MTV. MTV's 'rockumentaries'
on your fave bands are uniformly sycophantic. Film reviews are simply an
excuse to show film trailers. The nearest thing to thought you ever see are
weird in-house adverts that exhort you to think for yourself or fight
racism or some similar unarguable point. MTV may be broadcasting to The
Kids but the kids sure don't have any access to broadcast their own views.
Bland presenters in trendy threads shepherd you from one samey programme to
the next. No-one could possibly be offended by MTV.
Unless... they happened to tune into Beavis & Butthead by mistake. How on
earth MTV stumbled onto revolting Beavis and his intellectual powerhouse of
a partner Butthead I do not know. Even MTV seem slightly bemused by it,
prefacing every episode with a "don't try this at home" warning. They are
stupid, metal-obsessed, sex-obsessed ("we need a chick with tattoos on her
butt") loathsome and extremely funny, at their best providing acid
voice-overs for heavy metal videos where they voice all the thoughts
belonging to that part of you that is forever a teen metal-freak. Tuesdays
and Wednesdays at 21.30 CET. Like, I'm there.

As far as I know there was never an MTV homepage run by MTV.
It goes like this:
Adam Curry (MTV employee) sets up Mosaic home page.
Adam gets permission from MTV to use the Internet address 'mtv.com'
Adam sets up 'mtv.com' which is loosely linked to MTV.
Everything runs okay.
MTC decide that Adam can't use 'mtv.com' anymore.
Adam resigns from MTV.
MTV sue him for the 'mtv.com' address.
His home page is currently http://metaverse.com, and there are all of
the old mtv.com pages there (look under Vibe), including the long
version of the above story.
Hope this helps!
Steve.
