354.0. "Hope and Gloria" by RANGER::MAYNARD () Sat Apr 01 1995 04:18

This is a HILARIOUS update for the 90's of the Mary Tyler Show!
Cynthia Stephens plays Hope a perky divorcee who produces a local
TV talk show. Gloria is the Rhoda Morgenstern clone- a hairdresser
who lives across the hall from Hope.
Alan Thicke plays Dennis Duprey, the talk show host-the second
    coming of Ted Baxter.
There are assorted peripheral characters- all of them funny in their
    own right.
    Thursdays at 8:30 on NBC.

You've got to be joking! This show is terrible in every way. The
acting is contrived the writing sucks and Alan Thicke is b-o-r-i-n-g!
It's too bad cause I have a friend on the show and he's pretty sure
he'll be out of work in 13 weeks.

It's no "Seinfeld" or "Mad About You" but I do like it.

Keep in mind that Alan Thicke isn't supposed to be the star
of this show ... he's supposed to be a moron, and possibly a
boring moron, and he succeeds at that.

Actually, I hope this show sticks around. It's on exactly at the time
I go upstairs to read my daughter her bedtime stories. It's nice
having that break in between Mad About You and Seinfeld. 8^)

    I find the show irritating.

This is one of those shows that might get better as it goes along. Obviously
the entire show hinges on the relationship between the two main characters.
Right now it's based on the friction caused between them because they are
different. That will be good for a while but will grow old fast.

I just hope they don't go down hill and try to be another Murphy Brown where
the main characters are surrounded by a bunch of "Ted Baxters". They've got just
one now. As long as they keep it down to one they will be ok.

I can't stand this sitcome! Get it off my TV and for petes sake get if
off Thursdays! I can't belive the network has played w/our Thursday
night again. There is not one show on Thursday at 8:30 now that I can
stand - so off goes the TV for 1/2 hr till Jerry comes on.

I really looked forward to my 1 night of TV - now, I can see my self
giving up Jerry and Friends becasue of this piece of trash .

I don't mean to offend anyone who likes this - it's just not my cup of
tea - so please don't take it personnaly :-)

I one-hundred-percent second the motion. And in answer to .? I do
not believe that Alan Thicke is playing a borin character...I think he
is doing a BORING job. We are talking about Alan Thicke here. He's
hardley a good actor. (IMHO) 8*).
354.7Growing pains reunionGRANPA::JBOBBJanet Bobb dtn:339-5755Fri May 05 1995 17:3321
Last night's episode - with the "Growing Pain" reunion was pretty good.
Premise of the show is that the station has a new
manager/producer...someone who wants to spice up the shows for better
demographics. His idea is to have a "Growing Pains" reunion, since
Dennis Duprey looks so much like Alan Thicke and there is bad blood
between the two people. Hope is against the idea because Dennis doesn't
even like to hear the name Alan Thicke - referred to as "the A word".
The producer thinks having a fight on the show helps. So they go ahead
    with a reunion.

Lots of in-jokes with Dennis Duprey (played by Alan Thicke) making
snide comments about Alan Thicke. The cast members from Growing Pains,
Maggie, Mike and Ben do show for the reunion. Some inside Growing Pains
    jokes.

And, with Alan Thicke playing both himself and the Dennis character,
you could see a big difference in the "acting". My feeling is that
the stiff, boring character Dennis Duprey is the result of good acting
by Alan Thicke. Of course I liked him in Growing Pains too.

Hope and Gloria finished 14th (one notch ahead of Frasier) in the
latest Nielsen ratings. That's the good news. The bad news is that
NBC is moving the show to Sunday Night along with Mad About You.
I still think this is one of the funniest sitcoms on TV.
