| Apparently Nancy Kerrigan is at it again. During Wednesday's short
program after failing twice to complete a scheduled triple axel, she
returned to the "kiss and cry" area, looked right into the camera and
said "I bet you loved that America." Saturday's program should be
interesting.

Why would she say that? She's really asking to get into the tabloids
huh?

Well, at least she didn't do something as serious as bad-mouth
Mickey Mouse this time.

Re:In the tabloids.
She's been on the front page of the Enquirer, et al, for her escapades
with her current boyfriend. Apparently, he's married to someone else
who doesn't share well...

Her current boyfriend is her manager. His wife claims Nancy
is a home wrecker and caused their split. He claims he and
Nancy didn't start dating til after he had split with his wife.

| Woops, rumor inflation.
Nancy has a personal relationship with her agent. A tabloid claimed that when
his wife filed for divorce that she named Kerrigan in the complaint. The
tabloid has since been proven false, Kerrigan was not named in the complaint.
The wife has made no claim that Kerrigan broke up her marriage.
The agent claims that the marriage was over by the time he started his
relationship with Kerrigan.
As for Kerrigan coming off the ice it is true that she reacted to being
disappointed by her performance but it's worth pointing out that in no other
sport does the network attempt to pick up player reaction when players return
to the bench.
Can you imagine what kind of reaction they would get from Mike Greenwell (LF
Boston Red Sox) upon returning to the dugout after striking out with runners
on 2nd and 3rd? Or how about the comments of Bill Parcells after Drew Bledso
threw an interception with no Patriot receivers in the vicinity?
As with most of the Kerrigan bashing, broadcasting that reaction was totally
unprofessional. Her reaction was what anyone would expect from an intense
competitor who was disappointed with their performance.

Freddie Patek, sitting on the KC bench after grounding into a
series-ending double play in 1980/81 or so.
There are more, but that's the only one I remember.

Sorry about that ... I thought you meant "absolutely never",
compared to the "almost never" you did mean.

| Sorry, I should have been more clear.
The point I was trying to make is that there is a double standard applied to
Kerrigan. You can watch baseball games all summer and you hardly ever hear the
comments of players returning to the bench. You might see guys tip over water
coolers, throw bats and helmets, etc but you almost never get any sound.
You almost never hear private discussions between players and I'm sure you
never hear arguments between a baseball player and his parents. At least I
can't think of one. Maybe someone picked Jimmy Pearsal fighting with his father
once but I doubt it.
A different standard entirely is applied to Kerrigan and the other skaters.
Actually they could fix this themselves. A few choice obscenities tossed in
after a difficult performance would chase the cameras back to where they
belong.

| Uh, can we get back on topic, please. If you want to discuss something
like sports players/performers reactions, tabloids, etc., please bring
it to SOAPBOX. This topic is to discuss the CBS broadcasting of ice
skating only.
Thanks.

| What we are discussing are standards and techniques in sports broadcasting
as they pertain to this CBS sports presentation.
Seems like that would be appropriate in a TV chatter notes file.

Yes, this is TV Chatter, but the topic is CBS figure skating
and not Nancy Kerrigan's alleged home wreaking and other
tabloid trash.
I can see a rat hole coming and I to would like to please
keep the talk to figure skating.
As another mod has mentioned, if you like to start a topic on
"standards and techniques of sports on TV" then by all means
go ahead, but if you do - keep in mind it's should not be a
note on Nancy.
