255.0. "The Yearling (TV movie)" by SSGV01::GRANT (Margo DTN 264-3705) Wed Apr 27 1994 07:18

We very much enjoyed the movie "The Yearling" that was broadcast this week,
featuring Peter Strauss (?) as the father, Jean Smart as the mother, and some
wonderful kid as the wonderful kid.

It's probably been 25 years since I read the book, so I'm not sure how
faithful they were to it, but the spirit seemed right (as well as the sets,
minor characters, etc.)

I thought the acting in this movie was terrific. Several times I found
I was reminding myself that Jean Smart had started on "Designing
Women." Who'd have thought she would ever hold her own on screen with
Peter Strauss (who I consider a wonderful actor for TV movies). And,
yes, the wonderful kid was in good company and never overwhelmed.

There's a very good movie called Cross Creek that's a biography of the
author of The Yearling (drawing a blank on her name). It portrays the
actual characters and events that inspired the story.
