275.0. "TRIP REPORT-M/S Starward" by JUPITR::OTENTI () Fri Apr 05 1991 10:45

Just got back from my 7 day cruise on board the M/S STARWARD.
This was my first cruise so I really don't haven anything I can
compare it to. I did think the ship a little small in comparison
to some of the beasts docked up next to it in San Juan..would have
liked to been on one of them! Seems that there wasn't a whole lot of
thing to do while on the ship..if you were eating or drinking you
were playing bingo or in the casino. During the days we were at a
different island each day..that was OK..didn't like Barbados..was
really run down in and around Bridgetown..the beach we went to was
really nice and the water was the clearest stuff I'd ever swim in!
All in all I think St. Maartin was the nicest and St Thomas a close
2nd..the others..I could really do without.

The rooms on the ship I thought, were fine..had enough room for all
clothes with no problem..the beds were the most comfortable things I've
ever slept on...almost broke my nose one night..I'm used to a queen size
bed and I roam around on it some during my sleep. Well, one night I must
have thought I was in it because I tried to flip over a couple feet and
I smacked face first into the vanity between the two beds..thought I was
gonna die! Other than the vanity being the collection area for a weeks
worth of crap the room was fine and I'd have no complaints about being in
it for another week or two.

I had always been told that the small ships are better because they can
get right into port and you don't need to get a shuttle from your big ship
out in the harbor. I was told by one of the dock people that that isn't true..
says most all ports will can take any size ship (most ports..not ALL)..
he said that the cruise lines that bring their ships to port EVERY week have
priority over a ship that only comes now and then and those occasional ships
don't get to port at the dock and need to have people ferried in. He said the
only reason we got into port everyday was because our ship shows up every week
and they port cities will cater to that guaranteed ship business. We saw a
Princess Cruise Lines ship out in the harbor at two of our stops and they had
small ferries shuttling folks back and forth all day long..must be a pain in
the butt!

All in all...I'd take another cruise..would take it on a larger ship though.

Hi Al, it's Linda (your Nani-Kai-Hale friend!)

The ferries ARE a pain in the butt. When we cruised on NCL's
Norway, we were told our ship was too long to port at ANY of
the docks. Taking the ferry over was time consuming, and VERY
bumpy (due to rough seas). One day it was so wavey that we
had to circle around the ship for about 1/2 hour before they would
risk getting close to the ship to let us off - exciting to say the
    least.

I'm cruising on NCL's Seaward on July 7th - hope we can pull
    right into the ports.

By the way Al, did you like the private island (I think it's
called Pleasure Island)??? We loved it there - very relaxing
    (although alittle crowded).

Well, I'm counting the days till my cruise...

    Linda
(P.S. Did you gain any weight? I know I did when we went -
about 5 lbs in ONE WEEK!!)
