I am in a sequenced backed duo. Me on guitar/vocals and a girl on vocals. I need some suggestions for a mixer to use for live shows. I saw a couple of Kawaii 16 channel mixers about 1.5ft long by 1 ft across and thought that would be pretty good instead of lugging a big 4-5 ft desk around. But they seemed to be sort of dedicated to say keyboard mixing. By that I mean they didn't have any auxillary sends only effects sends. Does anyone know of say 12-16 channel desk that has 2 aux sends 1 effect send and 2-3 stage eq that isnit to expensive and is small and light? If you do could you give me an idea of price. Oh yeah the reason I want aux sends instead of eff sends is that effect sends are post fader adjustment and I want to use the aux as foldback sends. thanks in advance P.K.

I'm in a different situation, but have also been looking at mixers. I do home recording using synths, vocals, acoustic-electric guitar and miked acoustic instruments. I also play at my church with pretty much the same mix, and sometimes "play out" on piano, but with an amp for vocals and other folks' miked instruments. In my case, I've been dithering between a line mixer for my rack and a small console to do "double duty." (I've sort of figured out I'll probably want both *eventually*.) I'm *almost* certain that I'm going to skip the line mixer for now and pick up the Mackie 1202. I don't have the ad with me, but here's what I recall: This unit has four stereo inputs (i.e., two inputs for a single channel) and four mike/line inputs with trim control and both XLR and phone jack inputs. You could, of course, gang two mono inputs for any one of the "stereo" channels, but the most natural use would be for four SGUs and four mike or mono line-level inputs. Each channel has two-stage EQ, two effects sends (each with stereo return, as I recall), pan (which amounts to "balance" for the stereo inputs), and level. Channels 1-4 have trim control, as mentioned, and direct outs which double as inserts (never heard them called "aux sends" as opposed to "effects sends"), depending on the wiring of the jack/cord used. The specs cited are quite impressive, and the "big brother" of this unit, the 1604, has apparently gotten rave reviews (though I haven't read them myself). Mackie's been advertising this in both Keyboard and Electronic Musician for a while now- the ad gives pretty detailed info, and I found the folks who answer the phone at Mackie friendly and well-informed about the product. The list on these is $399, and Sam Ash quoted a selling price of $320. Don't know if this would fill your needs or not. If you need "bigger," the 1604 (old Sam Ash catalog price $895) is a superb unit as well, with more of everything. Bob

DIR/KEY=MIXER* yielded the following notes on mixers. I think at least one of them would be an appropriate place to continue this string. I'm in a similar duo, and I can't imagine why you would want to lug around a 12-16 channel mixer. We get by with a 4-channel mixer (2 mikes, 1 audio, 1 channel free that we sometimes use for an extra acoustic guitar). I could imagine using 6 channels, or maybe even 8 if I wanted to get real fancy. But I prefer to keep things simple (and light!). By the way, I use a powered mixer, and I use the mixer to drive our monitors. I have a separate power amp for the mains. Again, simple, flexible, and portable. - Ram

re -1 The reason I need at least 8 (really want 12)is 2 vocal mikes 2 channels for sound module outs 2 for guitar (one miked amp and di'd acoustic) 1 or two for effect return P.K.

>1 or two (channels) for effect return A good mixer isn't going to require an entire input channel for each FX return.. rather, there's generally aux inputs specifically FOR FX returns which have a simple volume pot, no EQ. karl

We do similar things in terms of DUO and live performance. I use a BOSS BX16 Mixer which just fits neatly in the top of the Rack and can be pulled out on to the top ready wired to go. Conversely I am running out of channels. We like to adjust the mix on line to suit the place we're playing so we have bass/bass drum/snare/Hihats/all on seperate channels plus some instruments are in Stereo MKS20/ My Guitar. It doesn't have the best of EQ's (we have a graphic in the rack) but it is simple quiet cheap and works. The other Peekay

-1 Thanks for your reply. The Boss mixer you use how many pre fader sends does it have and how many post fader sends ( we call them aux and effect sends over here) and approx how much US$. thanks P.K.

Sorry this took so long to get back ! So little time and so much opportunity. The Boss just has 2 post fader sends both with with stereo return uk price is about 350.00 pounds so its probably the same over there in Dollars PeeKay. |
