1850.5 | Price? | DRUMS::FEHSKENS | | Tue Jan 10 1989 20:29 | 18 |
| how much $? Sounds like an MC-500 mk II. If it's <$1500, it would
be a real deal.
MC-500 mk II has more notes onboard (100000), but only 8 tracks.
Only 8 songs.
Also has drum machine style rhythm track (240 patterns, 999 bars),
and a little more tempo range. Same resolution, many similar features,
although MC-500 mk II (actually S-MRC software) has editing features
out the gazoo.
Is the Kawai booted from disk, or is program stored in ROM? MC-500
can run other applications.
And, is the manual intelligible?

| I read the review in Keyboard last night. I'll hang onto my MC-500.
They say it's neat, but the user interface is a disaster, and the
manual is even worse. A new manual is in the works, but the user
interface (which apparently requires a *lot* of in-the-right-order
button pushing) will not change.
I'm surprised they make such a big deal about the tempo track -
the MC-500 has had this for two years...

This was one of the products we saw demo'd at the last Wurlygig with
the K1. A great combination for a nouveau user sans beaucoup bucks.
Both K1 and Q80 for $1200 from Wurly.

| Well , personally I don't have the bucks for an MC500XX but it would
be nice to have a disc based Sequencer, since I'm presently using
an MTT8 and NEED something for live 2 man gigs.
Whats a PG100?(roland)?

1850.13 | Other Roland Sequencers | DRUMS::FEHSKENS | | Thu Jan 12 1989 16:53 | 29 |
| The PG-100 is a programmer for the little D-series synths.
Note that Roland makes a couple of other sequencers that cost less
than an MC-500 Mk II. I don't have prices handy, but I do know
the model numbers:
PR-100
MC-300 (cost reduced MC-500)
MC-500 (discontinued but still available at heavy discount;
i.e., you can get one for < $900)
Both the MC-300 and MC-500 will run the S-MRC software, but with
some limitations due to memory capacity. The main effect is it
has to go to disk for a lot of code, so some editing operations
are slower than an MC-500 Mk II.
There may be a catch-22 in this if you have any MC-500 MRC data that
you want to convert; the S-MRC software can do the conversion, but
there's not enough memory in an MC-300 or MC-500 to hold any but
the smallest tunes, so you get an error. If you don't have any
MRC data you want to carry to the S-MRC environment, this is not
an issue.
The PR-100 is a different beast. I don't know anything about it.

Try checking into the MIDI DJ. It's great for live performances if you
can get by the big zit on its forhead (no MIDI echo thru).

The PR100 is quite limited in terms of functionality. There's another
topic in here somewhere dealing with it, I'm sure ... but I can't find
it. 8-(
>MIDI DJ
They are no longer in production. A fellow I know tried to get one and
called INDUS ... they have discontinued them, although they "might come
out with a new improved version in a few months". Right.
Anyway, the MIDI DJ note is 690.

Well, they can still be had, both used and stock leftovers in various
stores.
Thanks for the note pointer.

Can anyone provide an update on this m/c?
I am in the market for a sequencer and based on the previous replies
this one looks promising. However I am wondering why the year without
a note?

Probably because no one in this conference has bought one yet,
being all MC500 and MMT8 diehards.
I checked it out. It uses the type of sequencing found on the
MMT8, parts linked together into a song. A more memory efficient
was of sequencing, IMHO. *^].
A possible drawback is it boots from rom, therefore the software
is not upgradable( with the exception of changing the rom).
A plus is you can plug it in, turn it on, and wail, as the songs
are still in memory.
For someone who can't (or won't) crank out >$1000 for a hardware
based sequencer but won't settle for something without a built-in
disk drive and tempo changes, the Q80 delivers a lot for approx
$580.00 (actual quoted mail-order price).
