16.7 | Lasalle, Midiverb II and Microverb II | SQUEKE::GOSSELIN | praying for snow | Tue Dec 27 1988 13:45 | 34 |
| I just got off the phone with LaSalle's in Boston. It
appears as though Bruce (the former DECMS contact) has left the
company. I spoke with Mark Miller from their Pro-line audio equipment
dept who was more than willing to answer my questions regarding Alesis
gear and other items. We spoke for about a half hour and he seemed
very excited about making a strong connection with DECMS.
He claims that he will be able to beat 80-90% of all other
prices anywhere. I called mostly for prices on the Midiverb II and
Microverb II and we ended up speaking about what they feel their
market niche is, the other lines they carry, how DECMS could fit in,
etc., etc.
The prices he quoted me are as follows:
Midiverb II...............................$230
Microverb II..............................$170
(please note these are NOT walk in prices, these can only be obtained
through DECMS)
I'm not sure about the Microverb II, but Sam Ash has the Midiverb II
for $239.
It looks as though I'll be getting the Midiverb II sometime
this week or next through Lasalle's. My highest recommendation goes
out to Lasalle's and Mark Miller.
Dan
P.S. Mark is sending me a big promo-type packet with tons of stuff on
the lines they carry, etc. If you want one for yourselves or
just want to rap, give Mark a call at (617) 536-0066.
P.P.S I'm having the Midiverb II sent to Nashua (where I work) to save
on the sales tax (I'm an MA resident)!

16.8 | Small treatise on price-matching | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | Yo! | Tue Dec 27 1988 14:37 | 26 |
| I think this just reflects a general price reduction in the MIDIVERB II.
I walked into a mom & pop type (low volume) guitar shop in Ithaca, NY
this weekend and their ASKING (sticker) price was $235, and I was told
that THAT was negotiable. The $235 sticker didn't have any adornments
like "Special", or "Wow! look at this!".
> He claims that he will be able to beat 80-90% of all other prices
> anywhere
80-90% of all music salesman will tell you that, and despite the
reflexive incongruency in the statement, they all are telling pretty
much the truth.
Just don't presume that LaSalle's is really any different from
EU's, Daddy's or whatever in this respect. I have never had any
problem getting ANY large chain store I've dealt with to match
a price.
Once I made that discovery, I started always going to the same store
(Daddy's in Nashua) and dealing with the same people because they
knew my expectations. Since then, I've always been treated very
well cause they know not only that *I buy*, but also that *I buy
there*.

Was that Ithaca Guitar Works or McNeil's Music? I know from experience
that McNeil's gets away with charging list for almost everything in their
store. I'd be very interested to hear if was them or IGW.

Very true. I was simply stating that Lasalle's was part of this 80-90%. 8*)

Dave, maybe some of us should take lessons from you!

Daddy's? Are you kidding? I've just about had it with people at Daddy's
saying "Well, we just can't go any lower". I've spent over $3500 at Daddy's
this past year and I'm still not treated with much respect. It appears to
me that their attitude is very non-caring about customer satisfaction -
only that they can rake in the revenues.
One for the record, Dave. A mutual friend of ours who has also spent a
small fortune at Daddy's in the last year tried to get them to match
Caldor's sale price of $99.99 for a Casio horn. Daddy's response: "We
can't do it - we'd just lose too much money on it." So much for Daddy's
WRITTEN guarantee about matching anyone's (locally) price and so much for
trying to keep happy customers.
Dave, The reason I even entered my first reply was that for once, it seemed
as though a midi dealer was really interested in helping me out, not just
trying to make a sale. Sure, he was grateful that he could connect with
DECMS, but I have the feeling that he genuinely cared.

| Since this note was created, I have not received any submissions
to the DECMS BBOARD. That's ok, but I think there is significant
value to having a well organized bboard.
THis note can serve as the way to "submit" things for the BBOARD,
but after doing one round of that (taking quotes from this note
and editing them into the BBOARD), there are things about the way
that people post things to this note that make putting things
into the BBOARD hard or impossible.
In this note people have:
o Posted items without describing what they are like
DX7, QX9, etc
o Posted items without identifying the brand (Yamaha, Roland, etc.)
o Posted items without fully identifying the source (mentioning
a "local" music store that not everyone else in the file is
familliar with.
(A quote was even posted without mentioning what store gave the
quote!)
I will only say that I will commit ONLY to moviong quotes posted here
to the BBOARD that are posted here in BBOARD-ready form: i.e. such
that they can pretty much be cut and pasted into the BBOARD.
That Form is (for example)
Ensoniq
EPS Sampler
Daddy's Junky Music $nnnn month/day [DECMS]
If the dealer isn't one that isn't already listed in the BBOARD
dealer list, you should include something like the following:
E.U. Wurlitzer, Worcester MA 508-754-5271
DECMS Contact: Eddie Fritz
I always feel like I'm trying to beat formalities and regularization
into notesfiles. I recognize that people have the right to post
things here however they want. I just think that the ORGANIZATION
of the BBOARD is EXTREMELY useful (try and find a quote for a
particular item in THIS note and you'll see) and that with a little
standization of the format and content of notes posted here, we
the BBOARD could be a really valuable resource.

Got it at Daddy's Junky Music in Nashua, NH.
This was one of Daddy's *UN*advertised specials.
I got the only one in the Nashua store (a demo unit), but the sales
guy (Tim something) said that all the other Daddy's stores were having
the same deal on them... so interested parties should call the
*other* DJM stores to see if they've got one in stock.

| Visited E.U. Wurlitzer in Boston last Saturday. Two things might be
of interest.
1) Boss half-rack effects, (including the RCE-10 chorus) $99.00
They are being discontinued. I have never heard any comments
on the other units in this series, but the RCE-10 is the COMMUSIC
"chorus of choice." If you know that other units in this series
are good, please post a review in another note. I'm interested
in the phasor, myself.
2) Korg P3 Piano modules, blow-out at $199.00 This is the ROM-
based, non-rackmount wedge package. Two distinct piano voices,
and a card slot that is compatible with cards for their Symphony
module. This might be a great deal if there were cards...but I
haven't seen any, and Korg lit. only mentions 2 not too useful ones.
I don't even know if you can get those.

I have been told by a reliable source that Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiters
are still in production. In fact, they are "on sale" right now,
for about half what they used to go for. It is quite possible that
the price will go back up sometime soon.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the MKS-80, it is Roland's
top of the line rack mount all analog synthesizer. It includes
a basic MIDI implementation (all you need), is 8 voice monotimbral
or 4 voice bitimbral or dual layered. Yeah, this is not a lot by
today's standards, but there a very few of today's synths that sound
like this.
The Super Jupiter lists for $2495. This is old but classic technology.
Ask anyone who owns one if it's worth it.
EUWurlitzer will special order one for you. I already have one and
I'm ordering a second one.
I don't know if programmers (MPG-80) are still available. The MKS-80
comes with a parameter/value up/down pushbutton programming interface
which is serviceable if tedious.

They are also selling their last two 1000PX+ models for $1295.
All of the above are store demo models.
Mentioned was also the 1000AX+ but no price was put on it -- I assume similar
to the PX+.

Daddy's is dropping the Kurzweil line I am told and hence the "blowout".

| > Some nonsense about no mail-order on Roland gear.

We discussed this before. In response to pressure from retail
stores, Roland will not allow mail order. I've now heard from just
about every place I've dealt with. It's no longer a rumor.
Basically, the stores felt that people were coming into the stores
for demos and then ordering mail-order. The stores said to Roland
'since there's no way for us to compete with MO because they don't
have the same overhead, we have less-and-less reason to carry the Roland
line so you better about it.'
Roland's hand got forced, and you know the result. This is EXACTLY
what I said would happen somewhere in here. Roland knows they can't
survive with just mail order.

Me too; not beneath...., etc.
- But can Roland survive on retail alone ?
- Will they lose market share to the companies that cater to MO
AND retail ?
- Will the segment of the public who have been used to browsing
in the retail store and buying MO just boycott Roland ?
It isn't a simple (business) model, I'm sure - and I sure
wouldn't like to be the guy who has to decide whether to cut
off the MO outlets.
I don't expect to see any anti_trust/fair_trade/price_fixing
legal action to come out of all this, the market is too small and so
are the impactees.

Absolutely fabulous trumpets. But Maynard Ferguson can play higher than the

> Another reason to not buy Roland equipment; it costs more and

Uh, Bill. You've got the wrong heavy here. This move was not
instigated by Roland. It was a reaction by Roland to a demand/threat
by retailers.
The more stores compete with each other, the more Roland gear that's
sold.
Bill, you tell me who the heavies are here?
o Are the stores heavies for telling Roland that aren't going
to carry their line because they can't make money because
they can't compete with MO's because of overhead differences.
Really what the stores are saying is "look, we can't compete
with MO so we're going to drop lines that are carried by MO.
Roland is probably just the first. There'll be more.
o Is Roland the heavy for restricting MO. If they didn't, and
Roland stuff wasn't visible in stores, I think they have good
reason to believe that no one will buy something without having
the chance to use it first. MO *does* thrive off us retail
stores.
o Are MO stores the heavies for offering the product at lower
price because their overhead is lower.
You tell me Bill. Who are the bad guys here?

close to "conspiracy" and "illegal restraint of trade". They may be
sweethearts in person, but I wouldn't want to meet the group in a dark
alley.
Roland is (are :-) also bad guys (or more accurately, weenies) for not
standing up to the dealers. No way the dealers walk away from a Roland
franchise (I'm assuming that Roland is #1 or nearby for semi and pro
equipment).
Computers, TV's, Walkpersons, stereo stuff and god knows what else are
sold mailorder for less than full retail. Why should music dealers be
such primadonnas?

Both the stores and Roland are the heavies.
1)First, the stores that found the Roland line unprofitable because
of MO competition should have discontinued the line, rather
than coercing Roland to halt MO distribution. That's what you're
_supposed_ to do in retail - cease selling what don't sell!
2)Second, Roland should have sent a letter back to each coercive
store saying something like:
Gentlemen;
We at Roland understand your position,
however, given the legal status of commodity goods
under the Sherman Antitrust Act, our legal counsel
advises us that entering into such negotiations
to restrain trade would expose both ourselves and
you to criminal prosecution.
We must therefore state that we can and will
make no supportive statement and take no position or
action on your request.
Sincerely,
Bozo T. Roland, corporate counsel.
In other words, the stores got greedy, Roland didn't stand up to
them, and as far as I'm concerned, the appropriate action is a
"consumer boycott".
-Bill Yerazunis

Chad's right. I went to Daddy's Friday afternoon after reading the
note (thanks, Chad!), walked in, asked to try them out, and without so
much as the D word (Digital), was asked, "did you know we're blowing
these out at $495 and $1395." Tim treated me well and left me to
fidget with the units for 30-45 minutes.
By the way, when I left (~3:30pm, 28-JUL-1989), both units were still
available. I couldn't justify the utility of either unit. I've
already got a 1000PX with the soundblock (it cost me ~$2K) and I don't
think I'd get $495 worth of use out of the samples in the 1000HX.

16.112 | ** HOT ** Analog deal... | TALLIS::SEIGEL | SYNTH when? | Thu Aug 17 1989 14:51 | 15 |
| A truly hot deal I saw at Daddy's in Nashua (I'd buy it if I had
the money - just for the spare parts!)
Oberheim OB8 (pre-midi, but midi-able for around $250)
Oberheim DSX sequencer (designed explicitly for the OB*)
Calzone case for OB8
$ 549 !!!!
Someone's got to take advantage of this incredible deal. THink of it this way;
the original list price on this equipment was about $6700.... 8^)
Talk to Tim.

16.113 | Some things to consider on that last deal | KALLON::EIRIKUR | | Thu Aug 17 1989 16:03 | 21 |
| I've seen the OB8 there. It looks like Tim has come down on the price,
or maybe I didn't know it included the sequencer.
Points to consider: Does a MIDI conversion give it a decent MIDI
implementation?
The OB8 is a physically HUGE, heavy object.
The Oberheim Matrix-1000 1U rack synth is 6 similar
analog voices brand new for < $500. Good MIDI.
At this price you would be close to the
price/pound for scrap parts! And they are good
parts in OB gear of this vintage. Real solid
stuff.
I've dealt with Tim. Do ask for him.

| > I've seen the OB8 there. It looks like Tim has come down on the price,
> or maybe I didn't know it included the sequencer.
It was just the OB8 at first.. They've thrown in the sequencer and the case,
and knocked $50 off the total price.
> Does a MIDI conversion give it a decent MIDI implementation?
Describe decent. It implements omni-on or omni-off, receives/transmits on
any of channels 1-8, receives controller info (modwheel, pitch bend, sustain,
at least), and patch change requests. Seems simple enough to install, but
Aztech electronics in Boston could certainly get the parts and do the
installation.
> The OB8 is a physically HUGE, heavy object.
It's big, but certainly no longer than a DX7. Only about 1.6 times as deep,
and twice as tall in the rear. It weighs 45 pounds, only 15 pounds more than
an ESQ1. It's not like a mellotron or anything...
|
16.117 | good deal. | DYO780::SCHAFER | Brad - back in Ohio. | Thu Aug 17 1989 18:04 | 4 |
| The OB8 also does SYSEX (unlike my OB-Xa). If it's in good shape,
that's a heckuva deal. Analog was never fatter.

| Dunno' the name of the flick. It was one of those Mad Max-ish ones
where the good guys are going after gold and had something to do
with mutants that were telepathic. Lots of overdubbing for the
actors that couldn't speak English very well. Ends with the good
guy turning down an offer to escape and winds up in a knife fight
with a guy called 'Hunter'. I was putting together shelves at the
time. The Chroma was listed in the credits. Sounded like the only
instrument used. It had its moments, but sounded pretty cheap.

These seem to be good prices, and with a credit card, the stuff can be ordered

Sam Ash is blowing out their YS-100 and YS-200 multi-timbral
midi workstations (?) for only $359 and $429, respectively. I think
either of these would make an excellent starter synth, especially since
they have done away with the in-depth operator programming and use a
user-friendly interface. The difference between these synths is the
Ys-200 also has a 7500 note, 8 track sequencer built in. Both have internal
effects such as reverb, delay, chorus, distortion(huh?) and flange, but in
a multi-timbral setup, the effect is across the board.

All right out there!!
I just got a flyer from Guitar Center and the Roland R-5 is on sale.
$469 is what they want.
That's a straight up deal for those who have shopped around.
Refuse to pay the tax though. I usually do.

| I just need to figure out how to scan stuff into notes, huh?
Let's see, I could fax every page of the brochure into my PC and
then upload the fax files to the net and the interested parties
could then download the files and print them out. All we have to
agree on is the format for the fax file, then everyone can get
the prices and the hype... Maybe there's a scanner somewhere on
the net that could just put the flier in as a series of X
bitmaps? Copyright? We don't need no stinking copyright!
Maybe it would be easier if you would just ask about specific
things or groups of things. Maybe it would be even easier if
everyone got on the GC mailing list. I'm willing to write the
letter if a bunch of my fellow noters want to send me their
mailing information...

The problem is that we don't know what products to ask about... There might
be things I'm interested in that I don't know about :-)
How 'bout major MIDI things (no guitars or other non-MIDI stuff -- do include
FX processors that are rackmount however)?
Is that asking too much? I don't mean to sound pushy or anything.

That assumes that I know a good deal when I see one.
Unfortunately, unless I'm about to buy something I'm usually
unaware of prices. (Then I check this file!) So the following
data may not be particularly useful.

Roland U-20, Alesis Sequencer $1499
Kurzweil K1000SE, Alesis Sequencer $1499
Roland D-50 with "free" M.EX board $1599
Ensoniq VFX with Korg P3 $1599
MIDI startup pkg for PCs: Cakewalk 3.0, MusicQuest Roland Clone, cables,$179
Tascam 238 recorder and 216 console with coupon for free 202 deck, $2546
Tascam MSR16 & STX1 speakers $5495

16.154 | A DRUM ROLL ..Please (it comes with sticks) | NWACES::PHILLIPS | | Mon Oct 30 1989 18:32 | 21 |
| I picked up a YAMAHA DD5 for $68, this past weekend
at Service Merchandise. I read a note somewhere in here
that mentioned about the MIDI capabilities of this
little box.( It's not that small actually.)
It does have four drum pads and midi out capabilities.
I connected it to my HR-16 and 'what a trip'. The pads are
'touch' sensitive. Setting midi channel and assigning the
drums pads ain't fun, but it sure beats (no pun intended) using those on the
HR-16 and now I can do my own drum rolls, etc . I think it's great
for the price. It does have it's own sounds of course but......
what you expect for the price. (BTW,Hall and Oates, and Phil Collins
recorded hit sounds with those cheesy little machines......)
Well, if you ever complained about you drum machine pads, this
is a good alternative. The only problem I have is convincing my
2 1/2 year son, it's not his and I have should have equal time,
well after a couple of tantrums and a bout screaming and crying
he gives in and let me play it, too.

Two local dealers are slugging it out over the U-20, one selling it for
$1185, the other for $1186.50. They are Hollywood Music & Sound at
412-771-3060 and Pianos n' Stuff at 412-828-1003. I bought mine from
Hollywood because it was more convenient to do so, although I generally
prefer to do business with Pianos n' Stuff (so you could calm my guilt
by checking with them first). I've picked up three of the ROM cards for
a total of about $160, and feel I've got a nice collection of sounds now
for a total of about $1350.

I've played John Middleton's CP-60M. It's a super nice object. 76 keys, a
very nice action, and real strings. Also, it has the most amazing Bahaus
styling--I practically have to get one for that, alone.
If only I hadn't sworn off of gizmos that provide MIDI-out only. :-)
Eirikur

16.163 | More on the CP60M | IDONT::MIDDLETON | John | Mon Nov 20 1989 15:14 | 52 |
|
(I meant to put this in here last week, but better late than never.)
The Sam Ash flyer I received last Tuesday (11/14/89) has an item
that might be of interest to anyone who would like a MIDI keyboard
with real piano feel: the Yamaha CP60M, $499.95 (US), shipping
and tuning *not* included.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the unit, it is a 76 key
upright electric piano with the following features:
o real strings
o MIDI output
o line outputs
o one pedal
o seven band eq for the line output, defeatable
o covered in black Tolex
We bought ours years ago and my son (the keyboard player in the
family) loves it. He often uses it to drive his ESQ-1 (which fits
neatly on top of the CP60M) because it has the best action of any
MIDI keyboard he's tried.
Pros:
o real piano action, therefore real piano feel
o MIDI out
o velocity sensitive
o compared to a standard piano, easy to move: it's on
casters, has fold-out handles, the keyboard and pedal
fold into the lower unit, and it fits in a Dodge
Caravan
Cons:
o not easily portable (takes two people and a van or truck)
o needs tuning (it uses piano strings)
o when used standalone (not as a MIDI keyboard), needs
amplification to produce significant levels
o as an SGU, it produces only one sound: piano
o no aftertouch
Anyhow, for $499.95 (plus shipping and, when you get it, tuning)
it's a good deal for anyone who would like a MIDI keyboard with
real piano feel. Of course I wouldn't suggest carting it around
to gigs. It's more for the person who wants a nice MIDI keyboard
to use at home.
According to the Sam Ash flyer, the original list price was $2995.
Also, for what it's worth, the flyer says this is the final import
shipment of CP60M pianos.

About those Yamaha CP60-M pianos. I just called in an order for two. One for
me, one for a holiday gift for my sister. Sam Ash initially wanted $150.00 for
shipping on, but when they heard I wanted two, I got a significant price break.
I think they are ready to deal on these things, so you might make a lower offer.
I don't have them yet, but I paid $850.00 for two units, delivered.

| >>Anybody know where to get/order a piano tuning hammer?
I don't know if it is still true or not, but when I tried to get a tuning
hamer about 5 years ago it was difficult. The piano tuners' guild (look up
the definition to get all the connotations) can be pretty tight with
the piano repair supply shops. I just called shops from the phone book
and got a run around or outrageous prices when I couldn't verify guild
membership. Finally I found a friend's piano teacher who did
repair work on the side who could get me one. I couldn't buy the piano
tuning books either, but retired tuners donate their books to libraries...
Some libraries have copiers too.

If anyone is looking to pick up some musical equipment at good prices,
run (don't walk) out to Building 19 1/5 in Natick (corner of routes 9 and 27).
They are having any incredible sale of merchandise salvaged from the Hurricane
that hit North Carolina. Here's some examples...
Multiverb $266
TX81Z $279
Korg SG1D $1199
ProMIDIBass $279
Roland R5 Drum mach $429 (missing AC adapter)
My memory fails at to recall the others... While some prices are
average, if you know what you're looking for this sale could save you hundreds.
They also have guitar amps, speaker cabs (mostly Peavey), foot pedal effects,
guitars, violins, brass and woodwind instruments, lighting, cables, guitar
stings, sampler disks, mikes, stands (mike, keyboard, speaker), lotsa rack gear,
etc.
While there is no aftermarket support if things break down, you can
return things within thirty days for refund. They hardly have any manuals for
the electronic gear.

But by far, one of the best deals they have is still there - a DX11 for
only $389. It looks to be in great shape and if you don't know anything about
it here's a quick low-down: Touch sensitive, aftertouch keyboard (61 keys),
an enhanced TX81Z sound module (enhanced with things like a Pitch Envelope

deal and if I hadn't have just bought my YS200, I'd have jumped on it. (They
have a YS200 there, too, but it was going for something like $600 - get it at

Also, has anyone done a listening test between the 1000PX and the

I called them concerning the $299 Matrix 1000. He said they were all out

Subject: First MEPP (Musical Equipment Price Posting)
Date: 6 Mar 90 21:11:03 GMT
Here is the first MEPP list for those who are interested. I feel this
format gives the most important information. Any suggestions as to how MEPP
could be improved will be welcomed! Keep those prices coming in! Happy
Shopping! -David
Key:
Best - best price paid for equipment
Ave - average price paid for equipment
Surv - respondents surveyed
Location - where best price was obtained. If no location is specified, prices
quoted were "local". There are simply too many sections of the country to
adequately cover all the possibilities. Remember: most "local" stores will
gladly become "mail order" if you meet their price. Even if your price quotes
are local, please include the store name, town and state. Prices without
location information are unfortunate, nonetheless it will give you some idea of
what others around the country are paying for their equipment. When duplicate
"best"prices are submitted, it will be computed into the average, though all
locales cannot be indicated. Be sure when indicating a store location to
specify which state it's in!!
Paying list prices for your music purchases may constitute grounds for
non-listing; otherwise, I would have to include every list price, and that's
just silly! Some list prices I can't check and therefore may be included...
Also, please try to list base option prices, in other words, try not to include
in your price any optional extras (ie: extra RAM, optional MIDI muting, etc.).
There are simply too many to contend with.

16.191 | Barely Used A80 at caruso's | TALLIS::SEIGEL | SYNTH when? | Tue Mar 13 1990 14:04 | 12 |
|
Just heard from Rick Watson at Caruso's. He's got a slightly used
Roland A80 controller for $1595. Considering that they list for
about $2600 and they go new for > $1900 at least, it's a pretty
great deal for a 1 month old machine.
They've also got some other interesting used stuff - some MemoryMoogs (!),
Korg CX3 organ, and the greatest prices around on all sorts of stuff.
Call 'em - 203-442-9600. Tell him I sent ya.

| I got a 'GRAND OPENING SALE' flier from E.U. Wurlitzer and believe it
or not check this out - E-MU PROTEUS XR - $899. Last month the sales
people were not will to deal or sell one for $1000.
Anyway this sale is to celebrate the opening of the Commonwealth Ave
store. It is close to BU. There is other stuff in the flier, however
I was not familiar with their prices and as such did not know if they were
good deals.
Here is another Tascam - Porta 5.....$349
Also JL Cooper MSB + REV 2 ..... $249
BTW String set guages 9's & 10's any quantity
GHS, Dean Markley,D-ADDARIO, Ernie Ball $2.99 a set
Opoopps, I guess they are moving to that new location.

NB: Price and availability subject to change without notice.
Well, you know what that means....They just sold the last unit to Joe

I just received a Guitar Center flyer advertising an Ensoniq blowout:
EPS: $1019
EPS-M: $1679
VFX: $999 etc.
I'm not especially a fan of either Ensoniq or Guitar Center, but for someone
looking for an entry level sampler these prices seem pretty decent.

Subject: prices on lots of synths
Date: 3 May 90 17:57:26 GMT
I've seen a lot of requests for prices on synths in the last couple days.
A while ago somebody made a list of "best prices", and I kept a copy and
tried to keep it current. Since it's been a while since the list was last
posted, I'll post my version. Updates welcomed and encourage -- I saved
$150 on a Proteus last month ($757 -- House of Guitars, Rochester NY
matched Audio Images in San Francisco).

16.205 | Daddy's Nashua -- TX16W used with double memory and 70+ disks | NORGE::CHAD | | Mon May 07 1990 18:04 | 16 |
| Daddy's Nashua has what looks to be a good deal on the TX16W sampler.
They have a used Yamaha sampler model TX16W with an extra memory board
and at least 70 sample disks for $995.
This unit has 3meg total memory.
The recent blowout was $695 at various places. Memory expansions (3rd party)
are about $350 (Y* about $380 at Carusos a month ago) and buying the sample
library is list $200. Even if you just bought raw disks and copied them
yourselves that would be at the cheapest $30-40 plus time. That brings us close
to $1100. So this is a good deal if you are looking for a sampler.
I own one of these units and like it a lot.

an Ensoniq SQ80 for $585 or there abouts (looked used)
Roland U20 (new) $800 +
Roland U110 (looked used) $297
Roland D20 (new in the box) don't remember the price
A whole mess of them Yahama PR thingies keyboards.
A few Electric guitars (about 6) coupla basses. Looked like beginner
stuff.
2 25" Speakers and other sundry equipment.
The neat thing about Building 19 is you can deal with them on price
and you can return the stuff within 30 days with no explantion.

| From USENET: price drop on Akai S1000 sampler...posting neglects to
mention a specific dealer to go with his price quotes.
From: mbl@media-lab.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Marc LoCascio)
Subject: Re: AKAI S1000 vs. Emax II -- Any comparison?
Date: 31 Jul 90 01:09:12 GMT
Akai recently (about a month ago) lowered the list price of the S1000 in
preparation for the release of the S1100. I was quoted a price of $3063
for the bare-bones S1000 and $3790 for the 40 Meg HD version (special order
from my favorite pro-audio dealer). The S1000 has a much better SCSI
implementation than the Emax -- it can communicate directly with a Mac via
Sound Designer or Alchemy. If you try to use the Emax with these programs,
be prepared to spend lots of time going out for coffee. S1000 memory
expansion is also much cheaper. (I was recently told by Akai that they have
new memory cards that allow you to expand the S1000 RAM to 32 Meg.) The
Emax boasts of something like 5 octaves of pitch lowering as opposed to the
S1000's 2 octaves, but the musical usefulness of this feature is pretty
marginal. You also pay extra on the Emax II for stereo sampling, which is
standard on the S1000. The Emax does have a nice keyboard and a sequencer,
but if you already have these things, the S1000 is a much better deal.
The S1100, BTW, is supposed to be shipping by the end of September, with
tons of incredible features at the same price that the S1000 used to be.

I assume you can cut your own deal for a little less than that. If

Yes, $199 was a good price, seeing that they've been goin for around
$250-$300 in the Want Ads, and that doesn't include any warranty.
However, since they're having that sale with 15% off everything, I was
able to pick it up last night for only $169! A very good price and it
works fine. Thanks for the lead, I've been wanting to get one of these
for a while.

New: $395 list I believe, probably translates to ~$350 street.
Used: $250 tops... Anything more than that you should buy new
and get a shiney fresh warrantee.

I agree with Edd on the HR-16. (Unfortunately, seeing that I was just
trying to sell mine for ~$300. I actually took quite a few calls on
it though, so you probably could get a little more than $250. I just
decided to hang on to mine after all)
On the KX76: I know someone that bought one used 2 years ago for $650,
granted he got a good deal on it. Depending on condition/case incl,
I'd say between $600-$800.
The problem with the 1000PX, is that most of us know that they've been
blown out NEW at several places for around $500. Although I tried
several times and could never seem to actually get one! Also, although
the PX holds it own, it now has the likes of U-220s and Proteus' to
deal with, which can be had new for >$700. Then there's Kurzweil going
under... If you held out you might be able to get $700-800, but you
should be prepared to get less / offered much less.

you have to be a member of BJs to get the price. (Membership costs $25). You

| Maybe everybody else already knows this, but Caruso's Music seems
to be giving great trade-in values... I've got an MKS-20 which I tried
to sell in this file for $500 with no success and for which Daddy's
offered me $200. Caruso's gave me $500 for it towards a U-220 @$695.
Its not often in this market to buy a piece of equipment, use it for 2
years and get 70% of the original price in trade. Caruso's also
offered me $200 for a TX81Z, which isn't a great price, but better than
the $90 Daddy's offered and alot easier than using the want ads.
Also in the process of calling around, I found that Union Music
has a demo U-220 for $595 if anyone is looking to save a few bucks on one.

I find those trade in values hard to believe... those are going used prices
in the want ad market, they've got to turn around and hopefully sell it for
a profit, and usually they put a limited guarantee of some sort on them as
well.
I can very well believe the prices offered by Daddy's, I don't know anyone
who's been able to sell/trade in anything that made it worth it there.
(oops, a recent note from Personell Police said to never say anything
derogatory towards any individual, 3rd party bussiness or organization,
but truth be known I think aside of that they are a great store to deal with)
Ironically, (as previously noted) I bought a TX81Z from them a couple
months ago for $169, you mean I could have turned around and sold to
Caruso's for a profit?!!
Hmm, I may be up for a little road trip to our good old neighbor state...

I did buy the MKS-20 there so maybe there is a few extra $$$ to
maintain customer loyality. Rick (at Caruso's), said they have a
pretty good used market in NYC. This was all "sight unseen" and not
even a question about the condition of the used equipment.
I did talk Daddy's into TX81Z + $200 for a D110 after a little
haggling and a mention of the offer from Caruso's. They wouldn't
touch the MKS-20 though. They claim the last few they have had have
sold for $350.

Sounds like the old import and export trade business to me.
Didn't someone mention awhile back that old synths go for high prices
in Japan (probably other places too - I don't remember exactly)? My guess
is that Caruso's, or Caruso's in conjunction with someone in NY, has tapped
into an export market. Paying a little more is OK if you get a lot more
in return. Antique dealers buy up old furniture in New England and
truck it down to the southwest for similar results. Then they load up the
truck with Navaho blankets etc. and bring it back to New England.

I'd be willing to but money that they wouldn't (turn anyone away).
Perhaps this is legitimate, but in my experience these sales are
just to dupe people into coming into the store.
Any MIDIholic knows that just being in the store makes you very prone

re: .258
Dave, the latter part of your theory makes sense to me (the furniture - blankets
scenario) but I have a hard time believing used synths over here would be
worth *more* over in Japan. I know you didn't say it, but whoever did, why??
Especially things like the TX81Z and MKS-20, weren't they manufactured in
Japan? Why would they be worth more after bouncing across the seas? Not
to mention incompatabilities powerwise/etc. I'm not trying to jump all over
you, just wondering, if Japan was not meant then where?
I am curious in the Japanese market however, seeing that I'll be going over
there for 10 days in the end of November. Would it be worth bringing something
over there with me? Would it be worth buying something over there and
bringing it back?
Thanks for any explanation / tips.

| This is becoming a rathole....
The thing about the Japanese market is that old *American* synths
(MiniMoogs, Prophets, Obies, etc.) are pulling big $$. That's because
there weren't a lot imported so that there are practically no used ones
available there. Those guys in CA who MIDIfy the old Moogs, etc.
supposedly sell a lot of their stuff over there.

16.268 | Roland Price Drops Extended to D-110, MT-32 | AQUA::ROST | Neil Young and Jaco in Zydeco Hell | Wed Oct 31 1990 16:58 | 11 |
|
I happened to meet a Roland rep at lunch. The current price everywhere
for the D-110 seems to be $399, MT32s are $299 at Wurlitzer's in MA,
probably similar elsewhere. The rep says these are due to wholesale
prices being lowered by Roland. He has heard of no replacements but
pointed out that with the age of the units, these are obviously to sell
off inventory. Wurlitzer's says the price will hold at least until
Christmas. They have plenty to move, so apparently does everyone in
the USA.

I dunno what that other deccie paid for the D110 or what is
being asked for them at the various outlets; he's in here from time
to time, maybe he'll give us a mini review of it later. He seems to
have buying patterns similar to my own; "wait for the end of the
intro pricing - pent up demand - nothing on the market to touch it -
this blows everything else away - everything else is now consumer gear
- phase" then jump in when the next wave is just getting introduced,
keep it for a couple of years, sell it before it is junk (-:

I have a friend who knows a guy(where have I heard this before),
who has a couple of ARP Solus & PRO-DGX Synth's that he picked up when
ARP went out of business. My friend has a chance to buy them but
doesn't know what they are really worth. Does anyone out there have
any idea of what would be a reasonable price for these. I realize they
are non-midi, ancient, mono monsters but they are essentially new,
unused. Do they have any value as a collectors item?

| Yes, Harry really claims to be going out of business, although he says
it won't be for several months. His advertising flyer says something
like "Due to circumstances beyond our control". I suspect he is
talking about the fact the both Nashua and Milford school departments
decided to give instrument contracts to some company from MA rather
than to him this year.
BTW, for those of you who don't know (and love?) Hampshire Music, here
is what you need to know before driving long distances: HM is probably
the most unorganized store you have ever seen. Well, maybe not the
most: Music is generally in alphabetical order, but you never quite
know what you are going to find. In general, they don't know either.
The "hardware" is quite a different matter. They generally know what
they have, but it is impossible to find anything without help.
So the long and short of it is, if you like to poke around places like
this, by all means come. For most everything, though, you are probably
best off not having your heart set on a specific piece, brand, etc etc.
BTW, they do have some odds and ends of MIDI-capable keyboards, as well
as band instruments, guitars, amps, misc electronics, even a few
orchestra instruments.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what really happens...

| Hey folks- anyone ever wanna play with a wind controller, but didn't wanna
shell out the required moolah?
The "pro" version (tee-hee) of the (somewhat infamous) DH-100 Casio Digital
Horn, the DH-200, is being sold by the mail-order house (liquidator, really)
Damark, at: (drum roll, please...)
$39.99!!!!! ($6.50 Shipping and Handling)
Yeah, I know about the relatively pathetic MIDI implementation and lack of
really woodwind-like timbre control and the like, but then I haven't seen any
of the whiz-bang Y-word controllers for a well-it'd-be-fun-to-play-with price,
either. Since my woodwind "chops" are for recorder and pennywhistle anyway, I
don't expect to lose much!
I'm presuming that the DH200's MIDI implementation is identical to the DH100's.
The only difference I know of for sure is that the 200's case is flat black
plastic, not fake chrome. I thought I read quite a while back that the keys
were sturdier, but not fer sure.
I was pleased to find the DH100 note which mentioned the MIDI implementation.
Even if I'm willing to accept the limitations, it's nice to *know* them! For
them as don't feel like looking them up, I've extracted them from note 1141.9:
MIDI implementation:
Channel 1 only, OMNI off, POLY on (mode 3), MONO output.
Outputs key on, off, velocity. Also prog change 1-5.
There is one other controller number available, I forgot which
one it is, it is NOT pitch bend.
You cannot change the key map, but transpose works over the
MIDI.
If you've bothered to scroll down this far, you're probably interested, so
here's Damark's number: 1-800-729-9000. As of my order, they show about 2000 of
the little suckers in stock, so you probably have a few minutes anyway.
Happy tooting.
Cheers,
Bob

| The other feature in the implementation is controller velocity...you get these
events when you vary how hard you blow. Of course, you ALWAYS vary how hard
you blow, so there are always a zillion of these little suckers in the MIDI
stream. I just filter them out. This thing is not good for subtlty, folks.
BTW, the default fingering is like a recorder (a bit like a sax, actually,
except that it does not have all the keys.)

Just because a place touts a price as "hot" doesn't mean it is.
We all know that but we all tend to give our trust too easily too.
We've even seen a "list" price offered as a "hot" price.
My feeling is, if you're going to post a price here you should either:
o Have some reason to believe it is indeed "hot" (some reason
beyond the seller telling you that) or,
o Add some kind of disclaimer like "I don't know if these are
good prices but..."
It's a free country, but I'd like to see that established as a
convention.

16.306 | Tascam 424 - $399 | QRYCHE::STARR | Spontaneity has its time and place. | Tue Aug 06 1991 17:48 | 17 |
| I just bought a Tascam 424 4-track recorder from Audio Video Research, in
Watertown. The price was $399, which was $70 less than Musician's Friend
was asking for it!!!
They only had one left at that price, but said they are expecting more in,
and they'll be selling for $424, still the best price I've seen on them!
This is the same place that I think I mentioned earlier in this topic - they
had a big sale for their Grand Opening a couple months ago, and were selling
Shure SM-57s for $69 and SM-58s for $79, and AKG 240-M headphones for $72.
These are all great prices, and people might want to check with them before
buying any recording equipment. If you want, ask for Paul in the Sales dept.,
as he's the one that helped me with the Tascam 424, and seemed to have his
sh*t together....

I am selling brand new SD-1's for $1890.00. I am authorized by a music dealer
to act as an agent on his behalf. This is his regular mail order price, and
I collect a small salemans commission which I usually use in the form of store
credit. Sort of like dealing to support ones own habit :^).
If you are interested please drop me a line at:
chuck@csn.org
303-421-9121 Eves
303-538-4693 Days
Also available is an EPS 16+ Turbo for $2175.00.
The turbo model includes 2X memory expansion, 2 Megs of Flash Memory, and a
SCSI port.
I hope it's okay to "advertise" here, I promise I won't make a habit of it.
However everybody who has purchased one of these beasties from me has said
that they did a lot of searching, and I beat their best price by >$200.00.
The unit will be shipped from an authorized Ensoniq retailer, and of course
full warranties are included.
P.S. I have an SD-1 and I love it!!!!!!!

I got it, I'd be really happy, but then I would be even more in debt.
And, then I'd be depressed. So, I'm happy that I can't afford them so

16.313 | VZ10M still popping up (me too!) | TLE::YBOT::ASHFORTH | | Fri Nov 01 1991 09:52 | 19 |
| Hi, folks. I'm reincarnated at DEC (for 6 months anyway), though I may be popping
around node-wise for a while. Nice to "see" y'all again...
Back to brass tacks: The VZ10M still shows up in Goldman's Gear Exchange, at
$388, but an outfit called Consumer Electronics ran an ad in Keyboard offering
them at $349. Both offers include the RC-100 ROM card, BTW.
The Consumer Electronics folks *said* that the offer ran through October 31, but
I somehow have this feeling that they wouldn't turn down someone's money today...
Oh yeah, I spent mine yesterday.
Item: they charge a 3% fee for credit card usage, which I've been given to
understand is illegal- if anyone calls them to order the VZ, act surprised at the
fee and mention its legal status. Good things might result.
(BTW, the "acceptable" way to charge such a fee is to include it in the price and
offer a "cash discount," so it's really just a matter of playing the game right.)

Anybody seen a good price on a D-70 anywhere? My latest mail-order rag still
lists them for $2000. Daddy's has one used for $1600. That seems to be the
going rate in the Want Ads too.
Any news from Roland on coming synths that will 'replace' the D-70 so that
they'll get blown out at half price like the 50??!! (I know, it hasn't been
quite that long, but my impression was that they weren't selling that great.
Correct me if I'm wrong)

16.322 | Wild speculations ... | MIZZOU::SHERMAN | ECADSR::Sherman DTN 223-3326 | Sat Nov 23 1991 02:06 | 41 |
| About $1700 seems to be the going rate for a new one. I paid about
that much for mine from Wurly's last March or so. They don't seem to
have dropped any. I suspect that the decline in D50s is more because
the public has (shhh!) not really been all that thrilled with "real" LA
synthesis. The D70 is actually the "next step" after the U20.
According to some reports, the D70 was originally going to be the U50.
Calling it "Super LA" was probably the best way for Roland to basically
drop the "real" LA synths and pick up on what appears to be the trend:
sample players.
I attribute the "demise" of the D50 to lack of demand for "real" LA.
The U20 is dropping to the $900 level because the D70 is pushing it
there. I suspect that in the relatively near future we'll see a D90
introduced to better compete with the Yamaha SY99. I expect it to
be about the same as a D70 except that it will have a disk drive on
board, a built in MC50, more memory and the ability to load samples
from disk. It MAY fix the vibrato problem by going to a faster
embedded processor (like maybe an 80960? - wild guess). I EXPECT it to
have direct outs that really work right. It will probably say
something about being General MIDI compatible. If they're smart,
they'll rethink DLM and introduce Super-DLM. Super-DLM will have
little to do with "real" DLM. It will basically allow you to select
the start and end points of the small-sample loop as well as give you
other nice features that are standard in samplers (such as reverse).
Might even make it able to link waves to compete with other "real"
synths and to bring back some features that die-hard LA synth fans are
now missing. I expect this thing to list for about $3500 with a street
price of about $2300 or so. It will probably push the prices of D70s
and U20s down only slightly. Currently, machines that can load
standard MIDI samples and that can sound really good are rather expensive.
I don't expect them to come down too quickly. The market is not the
same as it was a few years ago. Though the Japanese dominate, they are
feeling the pinch, too. And, I note that the industry in general is
not moving toward bringing prices down as quickly as it did, say, 3
years ago.
This is all guessing. I've heard absolutely ZIP about any new beast to
come from Roland. From what I understand, they are selling a lot of
D70s. It's a machine that can keep you happy for a long time.

Although I haven't received this unit yet and I got all my
information long distance from Bolton, Vermont to Worcester,
MA, I purchased a Kawai SS-650 the other day. QVC (Quality
Value Channel) was showing this unit on Monday night. From
what I heard via long distance television. . .
100 Sounds
50 or 60 Rhythms
Sounds editor built in
Midi compatible
Pitch bend
61 full size keys
16-bit PCM sounds
AC/DC power consumption
780 note memory for recording
The price. . .$ 199.00 (plus tax, title and registration.)
Ended up being three VISA payments of $72 and change. From
what I gathered, Kawai is attempting to push their low/mid
line/price range synths now. Sounded too good to pass up,
since the Yamaha PSR-46 (or was that 48) that my brother had
was $375.00 and it had the same amount of things minus the
pitch bend !
BTW, the piano and electric piano sounded good to boot !
Don't mean to brag, but I couldn't wait any longer. I'll
drop more info when I get it.

this will please you as it does me, if not, oh well. ;-)

"DRUMS in the WIND" catalog

South Bend INDIANA 46637

They list KAT products (MIDI KITI PRO,DRUM KAT) but not the TOM
pads. I'd bet they'd have them if you call.
Good luck....FYI...I've played the 7" as a snare pad connected to a
MIDI K.I.T.I. PRO interface with a Roland RM8 (piccolo snare) and
the rubber pad played as well as a real snare and the response was
fantastic. TRY TO FIND A PLACE LIKE euWURLITZER's in Boston. They
have duaz(KAT) pads, ddrum,SIMMONS,PD31(Roland) and a few more all
set up and connected to a ROLAND RM8 and a KAWAI XD-5...You can
play them all and get the feel and responses for yourself...Then
catalog order...
Again Good luck...john

16.330 | Decent supra-aural headphones for $19.95 | RANGER::EIRIKUR | | Mon Jan 06 1992 13:47 | 9 |
| Gear suggestion, courtesy of Anita, who manages my local Radio Shack. (US)
In the sale flyer due in homes Wednesday, the Pro-25 headphones (Koss is mfgr)
are on sale for $19.95 (half of $39.95, the regular price). I picked-up a
pair; the sale is on, the flyers are late. GREAT bass. Maybe a bit shy in the
top octave. Dumb Y-type cord. Very nice in-cord volume control (one slider
fades both channels). Mini-plug.

16.331 | ARP 2500 price? | RANGER::EIRIKUR | | Fri Jan 10 1992 13:48 | 9 |
| (couldn't find a better-looking place for this...)
What would be a reasonable price to pay for an ARP 2500 studio system?
I have a line on one, but the studio that wants to get rid of it has no idea
what they are currently worth, but they have some savvy, so I can't just offer
peanuts.

| I sold a hot-rodded 2600 for peanuts...people just don't appreciate
these non-programmable, monophonic synths any more. 8^)
To get a good price they'd have to find a collector. Go for it!

Another Sam Ash Blowout
Akai XE8 Drum Expander
I was passing Sam Ash 48th street tonight and noticed a blurb in
the window. It might be worth checking out.
Features 16 bit S-1000 drum samples. It has some VCO-VCF controls on
it, so it might have some possibilities. I also has one card slot, and
the display model had some cards on top of it, ambient and dry.
Price? $159.00
It's a one space, full width rackmount. I couldn't see the back to
check for the ominous wall-bug. I don't think Akai uses them.
Hey. For the price, there might be some big bang per buck here.

Good info -
Nothing's new with Casio, but Consumer Electronics Cop.
(800-786-1015) has bought everything they could get their hands on and
is offering some pretty good deals. They have the VZ-10M for $299,
VZ-1 for $499, and PG-380 for $899. They also have ROM cards ($69)
for the VZ family, including a couple from Europe that haven't been
sold in the US previously.

16.335 | Mackie CR-1202 mixer for $285 (reentered) | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Tue Jan 28 1992 12:17 | 17 |
| FOr anyone who saw this note before I modified it, sorry- I entered the wrong
phone number! Herewith the "right stuff:"
This is a superb price on this mixer. Some caveats apply: the vendor, "Sound
Deals," passes the charge for credit card use on to the purchaser, so the price
reflects a "cash discount." Add 2% for VISA, 3% (I think) for AMEX. They're
pretty willing to deal, though.

The total with a charge card fee and shipping is $298, which still is the best
price I've found.
