9905.0. "infos on sendmail" by MLNCSC::VOCI () Wed May 21 1997 12:50

    Hello,

this is a probably a simple question but I'm not a sendmail expert.

A customer called me saying that they need sendmail V8.8 so that they
    can implemet a mail relay.

I checked on the spd and found that our sendmail is based on 4.3BSD
sendmail V5.65 with IDA enhancements, I checked in the network manual
    and found we can define:
    - a mail relay to which the mail is forwared to
    - a mail server

Does 'mail relay' = 'mail server'?
Can we build a mail relay on Digital Unix 3.2C?

    Thanks,
    Gea

sendmail V8.8 is not required in order to have a mail relay, nor is
sendmail the only relay software around. All versions of sendmail are
    relays.

However, sendmail V8 (and especially V8.8) provides a great deal more
functionality than sendmail V5.65. If they know what those extra
features are and if they want or need them, sendmail V8.8.5 is
    available from ftp://ftp.sendmail.org/pub/sendmail/ . They'll have to
build it from the sources (easy) and build their own configuration
files from the M4 files provided (buy the O'Reilly book on sendmail or
hire a consultant). A future version of Digital UNIX will include
sendmail V8, but the latest snapshot I've seen is based on V8.7.6.

Ah good, in a 'future version' we will have a feature our customers
need that is already 'the old version'

    re: .-1

I wouldn't get too upset. There are 5 or 6 minor versions of sendmail
released every year. There were 3 versions in December and January
    alone. :-)
