Can anyone help me with an older PC that no longer recognizes the diskette drive? Problem: Drive A: diskette no longer works System: AT&T 386 PC What happened: My brother-in-law attempted to install a CD-ROM (mitsumi) and sound card and it has since not been able to see the diskette drive. My process: - Swapped the drive and that is not the problem. - Checked the cables and they are all snug and appear to be correctly connected. - Checked the bios settings. Could not get it to recognize A: or the CD-ROM. Tried every combination as A: or B: or 1.44mb versus 720kb, etc. - Removed CD-ROM and sound card. Bios still did not recognize diskette. Any suggestions welcome. Brian

try removing the CDROM controller card. sounds like a IRQ conflict. I dont believe the BIOS will recognize the cd controller during setup but it could be the reason drive a: is no longer recognized. Sometimes you can enable the floppy drives from your setup menu. Maybe it has been disabled? Need more info from you. Jim.

After removing the CD-ROM and sound card, I tried enabling the diskette drive from bios. It still did not recognize drive A:... How do I check if there is an IRQ conflict. I'm so used to W95, I don't remember much of 3.11! Thanks, Brian

Determine if it's a hardware problem first. Does the light on the drive stay on from power-up indefinitely? If so, it's a cabling problem. It's most likely reversed or the connector is shifted on the pins. Do you hear the drive initialize at the apporpriate time (should be right before the BIOS finishes and lets the OS start loading)? Try putting the floppy drive either before or after the twist in the cable. Some machines want drive A: to be before the twist, some want it to be after the twist. Jason |
