164.0. "Poorly ST !" by WARMER::KAYD (If music be the love of food...) Tue Jul 19 1988 07:50

I have a problem with my 520STFM, and would like to know if anyone
else has come across it. The problem is that the ST makes crackling
noises where the power cable is plugged in. This sounds like a short
circuit, but there are no sparks and no ozone-type smell. I took the
cover off (pretty brave eh ?), and blew into the power supply housing,
and the problem seems to have reduced.

Is this just caused by dust, and if it is, how can I stop it recurring ?
I don't want to have to take the cover off the ST every few weeks (I
suppose I could try dusting the room every now and then !)

    Any advice appreciated,

    Derek.

164.1Chew on this then?SEDOAS::TAYLORTue Jul 19 1988 10:3310
Derek, does the mains lead get warm around its 'formed' head (where
it plugs into the Keyboard)? In the 'old days', this type of plug
was prone to internal shorting at this point, where the insulation
between the pins broke down, or the cable suffered excessive bending.
Eventually, the fuse (mains, in the power socket), blows, as the
    resistance decreases.
If your machine is 'newish', can't see any reason why dust should
    cause this problem?

    Good Luck, Ken.T.

We should have talked about this this morning.

Mine does the same, always has. Doesn't seem to cause any
    problems however.

Mine does the same either, and at this moment it has never caused
    any problems.

I've never had a lick of trouble with mine doing that. I heard a bit
of noise once, but it was due to the audio in the monitor. In any
event, no snap, no crackle, no pop.

I've ``blown my hand off'' touching my monitor on the top while
it was on. There doesn't seem to be enough space between the picture
tube and the case (or inadequate grounding).

I would check that the plus itself is not getting warm, it is possible
that the connection between the cable and plug is not prefect and that a
degree of sparking between cable and plug pin within the moulded plug
is taking place.

Also bear in mind that Ataric plastic is "pretty cheap" in terms
of quality. It may well be that the cracking noise is rather loud and
intermittent ie caused by thermal expansion around the PSU which gets
warm. If the noise is quieter and more frequent it could be arcing caused
by poor cable to pin connection within the plug...in which case the plug
will be warm to hot to the touch after several minutes.

The fact that some others have had apparently similar problems for
long periods tends to imply thermal distortion of the case due to PSU
heating.

	Cheer,
	Nigel

This little problem is only seen on later monitors. It is caused
by the EHT shorting out to an ally screen inside the box. It can
be cured, I shall endeavor to find out how.
