The Cowboys will stumble early with Emmitt out and Michael on
suspension. They will put it together by November and will go
on to win it all, humiliating the Pats in December along the
way. No other team has the personnel to match them.

Steve, at least you have Kijana Carter back this year. Plus, i like
    Jeff Blake, very strong arm.
778.15ACISS2::LEECHWed Aug 21 1996 20:047
They did pretty good in pre-season, but that's rather meaningless, IMO.
FWIW, they lost about 5-6 games last year by less than a touchdown -
most by 3 pts. or less. Not that they would have won the superbowl or
anything, but they would have had a decent record. 8^)

Mark! You're picking the Packers for the Superbowl???
I don't want no steenkin Bears fan cheering for my team. B^)
I must admit I, do like their chance this year. Depends on Farves
health. After that medication addiction thing, he will need
to find other means of pain relief. Or, miss a game here or
    there...

The way the NFL is set up now, no team but Dallas or possibly the
49ers will EVER win a superbowl. The AFC will remain a complete
shambles for a long time, although the teams are slowly improving.
Green Bay might have a remote chance, but the Patriots will be in the
gutter this year with strong competition from Miami, Indianapolis, and
Buffalo. The Broncos look strong now, but we've seen this routine
before. Expect another off and on season. At least they've gotten back
to the point where other teams fear Mile High Stadium. Kansas City
remains the most overrated team in the NFL, with the Raiders a close
    second.

from what little I've seen on the tube, the coverage is indeed ridiculous.
I've managed to avoid most of the "special" sections in the newspapers.

Plus the fact that a few failed drug tests right after the game.

From what I've heard the team has been aware that this was potentially Parcells
last year and have dealt with it. Will McDonough, who broke the story Monday
pointed out last year he predicted this would be Parcell's last year.

Mark, I think a good bet would be that if the Pats win you'll forgo vendoburgers

778.1078WAHOO::LEVESQUESpott ItjMon Jan 27 1997 10:1412
At least they made a game of it. Howard's run back was a backbreaker.
After that the offensive line fell apart. Reggie White USED Max Lane.
And the Pats never mounted much of a pass rush. But they keys were
letting the Green Bay receivers behind the defensive secondary and poor
kick coverage. If not for those problems, there might have been a
different outcome. The Pats offense played a better game this time.
Terry Glenn's big catch in the first quarter was a gem. The Pats showed
a lot of character and should hold their heads high.

Add me to the list of people who can't stand the showboating on every

Good Lord, I haven't seen so much strutting and prancing since
I channel-surfed past a 1940s movie musical. And aside from the
classlessness of these maneuvers, on at least two occasions the
Packer running towards the goal actually slowed down (and nearly
stopped, in fact), so he could strut across the goal line. Seems
    risky at best.

I'm not a big football fan, but even I was a bit put off by the way
the national media treated the Patriots during the week and especially
pre-game, as if they were there as a formality because it says
somewhere in the rules that an actual team has to be there for Green
Bay to beat before being handed the trophy.

What was that two-point conversion after the 99-yard kickoff return
all about? Was it intended to ensure that even if the Patriots did
manage to score two more touchdowns and extra points, it would still
    be a tie?

Now that this is over, it'll be interesting to see what becomes of
Parcells, not to mention the stadium issue.

Oh, and we were also confused by the opening player intros...
it was apparent that not every player was introduced (including
many if not most of the "big names"). How was it determined
    who'd get introduced?

Did anyone else think that Parcells looked unhappy and/or
    preoccupied before the game started?

Did anyone else get momentarily fooled by the "Special Report"
    from Fox News? :-)

Interesting half-time show... seemed like a "show for guys", at
least that's what my wife thought ("Where are the half-dressed
    guys?").

The locally-produced post-game show on Fox was pretty lame, IMHO.
It seems like they'll let just about anyone get a job doing television
these days, since there's so many channels and so much time to fill.
Those two doing the remote from the field were amazing... one of them
kept calling the players "man" (as in, "Wow, man..."), and the other
seemed to be a graduate from the Ted Baxter's Famous Broadcasting
    School.

    Steve,

what do you think football players get the big bucks for? Seems to me
it is entertainment, and why shouldn't they celebrate for their
audience? I see it as no more offensive than victory laps around a
track, the blanket on a winning horse, and ply-by-play given by the
    winning jockey afterwards.

Beyond a certain point it goes beyond celebrating into

M'sieu SLAB, yeah it is a lot of extra work for 1 yard. Some of them
think they'll get further or try to break "the Big One". They play the
odds and often end up losing. My problem is if they get even one extra
yard, then they've gotten further then the gimmee 20 yard line, and the
defense still celebrates in a showboat manner. "Wow! Look at what I
did. I stopped him. Granted he got more yards then just to the 20, but
I am so Great for stopping him at all." The return man doesn't
celebrate, because he's usually to busy trying to see if he's still in

Paul Taglibue to help end the impasse between Parcells and Kraft.
Methinks, Patriots won't be getting reimbursed for Bill's leaving.
778.1125WAHOO::LEVESQUESpott ItjWed Jan 29 1997 13:05139
    >Methinks, Patriots won't be getting reimbursed for Bill's leaving.

Doubtful. Kraft has a clause that prevents Parcells from working for
anyone else in 97 if he chooses not to coach the Patriots. Kraft has
him by the short hairs, and Parcells is being a big baby (if you ask
me.) Here's a piece from yesterday's Globe which is one man's
    understanding of the situation.

This time, owner has Tuna on the hook

By Ron Borges, Globe Columnist, 01/28/97

NEW ORLEANS - While the Patriots flew home yesterday on a chartered
flight at midday less than 24 hours after losing Super Bowl XXXI, the
King of I was on a private plane surrounded by his cronies. This time,
not only was there no team in Parcells, there was no team with
    Parcells.

Bill Parcells, the soon-to-be ex-coach of the Patriots, chose to come
back to Providence with his family and friends rather than travel with
the team he has led the past four years, a final indication of how
today's planned settlement meeting with owner Bob Kraft will go.

Here is the situation Parcells finds himself in this morning. He wants
to leave, probably for the New York Jets, and Kraft is ready to tell
him not to let the door hit him in the backside on the way out. But
Parcells wants to leave without honoring a deal he himself brokered
last season, and this Kraft will never allow him to do.

Because of that, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has had league
attorneys reviewing the contract since Parcells himself asked Tagliabue
to step in and rule on the dispute following a recent memorial service
for former commissioner Pete Rozelle. Kraft made the same request as
well, by letter, early last week.

Tagliabue intends to rule on what Parcells' freedom will cost no later
than Thursday after conducting a telephone negotiating session with
both parties today. In such disputes, the commissioner is the final
arbiter, according to the league's constitution, and that provision
will likely forestall any threatened lawsuits because it is unlikely
that a court would take jurisdiction in a matter already adjudicated
under a private arbitration agreement, especially when Parcells was the
first to ask Tagliabue to step in.

In the end, the chances that Tagliabue will side with Parcells are
probably nil, and the King of I knows it. Worse for him, he knows why.

On Jan. 12, 1996, Parcells thought he had snookered Kraft when the
owner agreed to allow the coach out of the last year of his original
contract in exchange for his name on a piece of paper that is now
haunting him despite his agent's efforts to re-interpret that document.

At the time, Parcells did not feel well, he was unhappy at the
Patriots' performance and he felt he had not done a good job of
coaching in 1995. He believed he did not want to coach again after
1996, but if he didn't, he knew under the terms of his original
contract it would cost $1.3 million to buy himself out unless he had
    serious health problems.

Kraft agreed to amend the contract to void the buyout clause at
Parcells' request, demanding two things in return: $300,000 that was
part of a $900,000 lump-sum payment Kraft had made to Parcells when he
bought the team, and the coach's name on an agreement that bound him to
the Patriots if he did decide to be a coach, general manager or
    personnel director in 1997.

The $300,000 was not a buyout of the contract, as Parcells well knows.
It was payment from a deal Parcells made with previous owner James
Busch Orthwein for wearing Apex clothing on the sidelines. Had Kraft
chosen to, he could have tried to hardball Parcells on that because
Apex went out of business and the Patriots' owner signed a new deal
with Starter that pays the team rather than the coach for the apparel
    worn by coaches and staff.

This he did not do, but Kraft was unwilling to allow Parcells to leave
with $300,000 that Kraft believes he was owed only if he coached in
1997. More important, he was unwilling to allow him to coach in 1997 if
it was not with the Patriots.

Then, as this season unfolded, Parcells was rejuvenated. His team was
winning and he at some point decided he wanted to continue coaching.
The problem was, he no longer wanted to work for Kraft, who he felt
publicly humiliated him when he ordered the drafting of Terry Glenn
over Parcells' choice of a defensive player last April. But Parcells
was stuck with that little piece of paper he signed, and the
    machinations began.

Last Monday Parcells' agent, Robert Fraley, claimed the $300,000 that
once was alleged to have been used to help pay the salary of assistant
coach Bill Belichick and to give two other assistants raises was now
supposedly used to buy Parcells out of his contract. Some 48 hours
later, Fraley was saying Parcells was ready to pay Kraft $1.2 million
to get out of a contract he'd said was null and void 48 hours earlier.
At this point, all Parcells needed was three walnut shells and a pea
and he could have gotten a job in a sideshow.

``I've seen it,'' an NFL executive said of the amended contract. ``Some
people think no one has seen it but they're wrong. The lawyers have
been looking at it for Paul. Kraft dotted all the I's and crossed all
the T's. Parcells has no way out of this and he knows it. He made a big
    mistake.''

Anyone who knows Parcells knows that is impossible, however. Mistakes
are for mortals, not three-time Super Bowl champions. Oh, wait a
minute. Amend that last statement, too.

What Parcells signed on Jan. 12, 1996, is now an albatross around his
neck, and all the lawyers' fees in the world won't get him out of it
because Kraft intends to hold his feet to the fire. He believes to do
otherwise would open the door to all kinds of challenges to legitimate
contracts between owners and coaches, but frankly, it is more than
that. It is personal now, and when things get personal they tend to get
    vindictive.

Kraft has made noise about trying to get the first draft pick next
spring from the Jets if they sign Parcells, but that is unlikely to
happen. Tagliabue will side with Kraft on his right to compensation -
even though no specific compensation clause exists - because he
believes Parcells is legally bound to the Patriots for 1997 and because
he knows that when they vote on his next contract, Bill Parcells won't
have a ballot but Bob Kraft will.

Still, Tagliabue is unlikely to take the No. 1 pick away from aged Leon
Hess, the quiet man who owns the Jets and probably wishes he never got
involved in this mess. It is more likely that Tagliabue will award
Kraft the Jets' second-round pick, claiming they did not tamper with
Parcells before his contract expired (as was the ruling when Dom Capers
went to Carolina and the Panthers were forced to give Pittsburgh No. 2
and 3 picks), but that Kraft is entitled to compensation for Parcells
    breaking his contract.

Parcells can threaten all the lawsuits he wants, because if he does
sue, it will be doing what my father always warned me against. It will
be throwing good money after bad.

What the King of I needs to see is that for once this is the real world
he's in, not the sports world. It's a place where businessmen not only
write contracts but also hold people to them whether they stamp their
    feet or not.

Not really the same idea, since 1) They're not the Foxboro Patriots, they're
the New England Patriots, and 2) there isn't a large nearby city to support
them, while Foxboro is between Boston and Providence, and near Worcester.
Milwaukee is sort of around, but that would be kind of like Boston fans
supporting "sort of nearby" NYC area teams.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has ruled in favor of Kraft and the
Patriots and against Parcells, saying that the coach is obligated by
the amended contract that he brokered to the Patriots for the 97
season. If he is to work in any official capacity in the NFL it will be
for the Patriots or with the Patriots' permission (read: compensation).

I'll agree that Parcells did a great job with the Pats,
up to the week of the Superbowl. Then he put his interests
ahead of the team. One writer speculated that if Parcells
spent as much time on a game plan as he had on manipulating
the press via his agent, the outcome may have been different.

I remember reading a remark from an assistant coach.
Something along the lines of...Here we are at the Superbowl, which
should be one of the greatest times of our lives, and I don't

>...large ego to which he's entitled?

>why?

It comes with being among the elite at your chosen profession. In fact,
in many professions, it's very nearly a prerequisite. Bill Parcells is
a very talented, dynamic and skilled football coach. He's also a jerk.
Most of the time he was in NE, when he was being a jerk it was
entertaining (and also winning on the football field) so nobody gave
him much of a hard time. I can remember watching some of his post-game
(and pre-game) press conferences. Even when he was being an <r.o.> it
was quite entertaining (most of the time.) Like many other highly
talented people, he has some significant personality foibles. Because
we were getting something we wanted, they were overlooked. With his
machinations at a time when he should have been concentrating his
efforts on delivering his and the team's best performance, he put those
foibles in high relief. His subsequent actions betray disloyalty, which
to Boston sports fans is high treason. He must have known this, which
means the insult is even greater because he shows that he doesn't care
at all about his image here. He has Gingriched his goodwill.

He could have been forgiven had he decided to play this differently,
with honor. If he decided that the deal was "you give me complete
control or we're not going to be able to come to an agreement" and he
waited until after the season ended to do it, he'd have been forgiven
that particular indulgence of egotism (not easily, but he'd have been
forgiven.) Instead he (again) detracted from the Superbowl by playing
games. His former employer, George Young of the NY Giants said, "Can't
he allow an owner to enjoy a Superbowl?" (Similar machinations occurred
    during his two previous trips.)

What has many people pissed off is that he lied to us. He said he was
going to sit down and talk to Kraft after the season about coaching the
Patriots, but he obviously had no intentions of doing so. He was only
interested in wriggling out of his contract; he had no intentions of
    remaining the Patriots head coach.

He's lost his luster. No two ways about it. And he's really intensified
the Jets-Pats rivalry. It's into Sox-Yankees territory, now.
778.1199Seemed to go beyond what was necessaryTLE::RALTONow featuring Synchro-VoxFri Jan 31 1997 13:5530
I'm not all that knowledgeable about football, but I do agree with
what Jim and Hank said. He was a great coach up until that last
couple of weeks, when something obviously changed very suddenly
and radically. And at the Super Bowl itself, both during the intros
and through the game, he clearly looked like he was hardly even
"there" (at first I thought I was the only one who noticed this,
    but others did too).

I don't expect anyone in pro sports to be completely self-sacrificing,
but his antics over that last couple of weeks look pretty selfish,
and not only had an impact on the players and their performance (IMHO)
but also took a lot of the fun out of the experience for just about
everyone involved from fans to asst. coaches to the owner.

Now, it's easy to brush off that last point, but to me it's important.
After all is said and done, sports are supposed to be entertaining and
fun. This Super Bowl wasn't as much fun as it should've been,
    regardless of the loss.

As for the Jets, I suspect they'll give up something major for
Parcells, maybe even the #1 pick, and for them this might be the
    right choice at this time.

As for the Pats, there was one of several pretty good newspaper
articles/commentary the other day claiming that if Kraft does a
nationwide search and comes up with the football equivalent of
a Jimy Williams, there'll be hell to pay from the fans. I suspect

    Patriots hire Carroll as coach

By Howard Ulman, Associated Press, 02/03/97

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) - Pete Carroll, the defensive coordinator of the
San Francisco 49ers the last two years, is the new coach of the New
    England Patriots, succeeding Bill Parcells.

A Patriots spokesman today confirmed the appointment, which had been
expected even before Parcells and the Patriots officially severed ties
    Friday.

The announcement, which comes eight days after the Patriots lost 35-21
to the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl, is to be made at a news
    conference at noon EST.

Carroll, the head coach for the New York Jets in 1994, reportedly
interviewed for the St. Louis Rams coaching job but was passed over for
    Dick Vermeil.

Carroll was bypassed by the 49ers when they hired University of
California coach Steve Mariucci a day after George Seifert resigned as
    coach after eight seasons.

Carroll, 45, was 6-10 in his one season with the Jets. He was fired by
Jets owner Leon Hess after that season and then joined the 49ers staff.

Parcells and New England owner Robert Kraft split over a contract
dispute in which NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue ruled in favor of the
    Patriots.

Now the Jets, who covet Parcells for their coaching vacancy, must
decide if they are willing to give up their overall No. 1 pick to the
Patriots in compensation for signing the coach who won two Super Bowls
    with the New York Giants.

Carroll has experience at both the college and pro level. His NFL
stints include a stay with the Minnesota Vikings as defensive backfield
coach from 1985-89 and Jets defensive coordinator from 1990 until he
was made head coach for the 1994 season.

After taking the Patriots from last place in the AFC East to the Super
Bowl in his four seasons, Parcells stepped down because he wasn't happy
not having final say over personnel moves.

``They want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop
for some of the groceries,'' Parcells has said.

Parcells' dissatisfaction in New England goes back a long way. After
the team went 6-10 in 1995, he wasn't sure he wanted to meet the final
year of his contract in 1997.

But he'd have to pay Kraft $1.2 million to get out of that year. So he
asked Kraft to remove the last year from the deal. Kraft agreed and the
contract was amended Jan. 12, 1996.

In exchange, Parcells agreed that if he wanted to coach in 1997 it
could be only for the Patriots, unless they gave their consent.

On Friday, Parcells and Kraft held their own news conferences at the
same lectern. Parcells said he was resigning and didn't know what his
future held; Kraft insisted the two had a cordial relationship, but the
    organization would thrive without Parcells.

``I know I'm not the easiest guy all the time but, by and large, I've
been treated fairly,'' the ex-coach said at the time. ``With me
leaving, it's going to be Bob Kraft's team now.''

Kraft praised Parcells as a motivator who in just four years molded a
franchise with a reputation for failure into a Super Bowl team.

``Bill Parcells brought huge credibility here,'' Kraft said. ``He got
the ball rolling and created the excitement and did more for this
franchise than anyone could have done. I wish he was still here.''

According to Kraft at the new coach news conference, the Jets have asked him
for permission to talk to Parcells and Kraft is "considering" it.

Jets' plan: Belichick the coach, Parcells on deck

By Barry Wilner, Associated Press, 02/04/97; 13:21

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Unwilling to strike a deal with New England for Bill
Parcells, the New York Jets said today they will hire him as a
consultant and have him as their coach no later than next year.

For now, Bill Belichick, Parcells' longtime aide, will become the
interim coach. Jets president Steve Gutman said Belichick is also
likely to be the successor after Parcells coaches ``two or more
    years.''

``Bill and I will work in concert as we always have and I think we'll
be successful,'' Belichick said at a news conference at the Jets'
    headquarters.

Parcells, who coached the Patriots to the Super Bowl this season, will
have no responsibility in coaching or personnel matters although he is
to have an office at the Jets' complex.

Belichick, who was the Cleveland Browns' head coach for five seasons,
spent last season as Parcells' defensive coordinator with the Patriots.

He is not the coach the woeful Jets sought. But with negotiations to
acquire Parcells going nowhere and the Jets adamant in retaining their
overall No. 1 draft pick, the club turned to Belichick as a successor
to Rich Kotite, filling the last NFL coaching vacancy.

Gutman said negotiations for Parcells to take over sooner were
continuing between Jets owner Leon Hess and Patriots owner Robert
Kraft. But Gutman reiterated that the Jets will not give up the first
pick in April's draft to secure Parcells as their coach for next season
778.1222WAHOO::LEVESQUESpott ItjTue Feb 04 1997 17:116
I don't believe Kraft will accept Parcells working for the Jets even as
a consultant without going back to Tagliabue unless the Jets come
across with compensation. This announced arrangement seems to directly
contravene the commissioner's ruling. Look for a deal to emerge with a
couple of second round picks (this year and next year) and another
    player.

The "consultant" deal is, in fact, "a transparent farce." Kraft will be
told by Tagliabue to make a deal. Tagliabue has to do what's best for
all of football, and that is to get Parcells on the sidelines next year
for a team in the largest TV market. This ploy by the Jets is simply an
indication that Kraft misplayed his hand. He had great cards, but you
can't hold the ace forever. His mistake was not letting the Jets talk
to Parcells prior to coming to an agreement on compensation. He should
have let the Jets and Parcells talk and get real comfortable with each
other and structure Parcells' contract and everything. Then he would
have been in a stronger position to extract high compensation.

The idea of getting the #1 pick in the draft was basically fantasy.
What he should hold out for is the #2 picks for this year and next year
and perhaps a player. That would be agreed to by the Jets (after
hemming, hawing and complaining) in order to get Parcells on the
    sidelines.

Hah,

The league is cornered. If they tell NY to give up more than a
pittance they can tell Parcells to leave. At this point Parcells
would be sitting on a monster civil suit against the league for
lost future earnings. It is very clear that Kraft and Parcells were
not in agreement long before the Jets opportunity came up. Trying
to get the Jets to pay for this is not likely to float.

I don't want to see player for coach deals at all and I think the NFL
made a big mistake entertaining such a deal. On the next team you
might find a real genius at picking players for the draft. Is there
going to be draft picks given up when such a person leaves?

So Parcells is sitting on an agreement that says he won't head coach
or serve in a comparable position for another team. Until he does
that I don't see that he has broken the agreement. Given this
language and the present situation there might be room for an agreement
as to what "comparable position" encompasses but that is about it.

BTW - this stuff about "he know's our playbook" looks to me like crap.
Given all the coaches, assistant coaches, players moving around the
league there should be a pretty good library of playbooks with each
    team.

Looks to me like Kraft has been snookered. Parcells has done a good
job of positioning himself to win. This should come as no suprise
to those who have followed his coaching with the Patriots.

    >At this point Parcells would be sitting on a monster civil suit

That would be throwing good money after bad. Parcells well knows that
the commissioner is the final arbiter in such matters. In addition,
what civil court is going to want to take a case in which a private
resolution has been brokered already, particularly when Parcells went
    to Tagliabue first.

    >It is very clear that Kraft and Parcells were
    >not in agreement long before the Jets opportunity came up. Trying
    >to get the Jets to pay for this is not likely to float.

Parcells didn't play it right. If he'd let Kraft fire him, then he'd
have been free and clear. But he wanted to play games. He wanted the
bigtime attention during super bowl week. He got it. At a price.

    >I don't want to see player for coach deals at all and I think the NFL
    >made a big mistake entertaining such a deal.

This doesn't make sense, unless you feel that Parcells should have been
allowed to simply break his contract without recourse for the Patriots.

Parcells signed a contract that precluded him from working anywhere
else in the 97 season. It seems to me that the only people that can
release him from that contract are the Patriots. That's called
leverage. The Jets clearly want him, and want him bad. But the Jets are
conference and division rivals. Kraft knows how talented Parcells is,
and would quite frankly prefer that Parcells retire or at least not
coach in a position that will give another team a competitive
advantage. But that's just the situation. Parcells is going to a rival
team, and will be in a position to significantly negatively affect the
Patriots. Kraft would be an idiot not to try to A) get the maximum
possible compensation prior to releasing Parcells from his obligations
or B) prevent Parcells from working for any other organization.

    >On the next team you might find a real genius at picking players for
    >the draft. Is there going to be draft picks given up when such a

I guess that depends on whether he's still under contract and how

    >Given this language and the present situation there might be room for
    >an agreement as to what "comparable position" encompasses but that is

It seems to me that the role of "consultant" he will be taking is
substantially similar to being the head coach considering the fact that
he will be the head coach the following year. It seems like a simple
ploy, and Tagliabue should stop this naked end run around his ruling or
else he'll be vulnerable to unending challenges to his authority from
others. I expect that privately Tagliabue will be urging the two sides
    to come to terms.

    >BTW - this stuff about "he know's our playbook" looks to me like crap.

I don't think that is the issue. He knows the relative strengths and
weaknesses of the team more than anyone else in the league. That is
obviously a significant competitive advantage for him to take to a
    rival club.

I disagree that the commissioner in the final arbiter in this.
Parcells and Kraft/Patriots agreed to use him as an arbiter and both
sides accepted his resolution. That resolution is binding. I know
of no further agreement between the parties to accept Tag as a
arbiter beyond this point. Is this something I've missed? The NFL can
take further positions on this but the final arbiter, if called on , will
    be the court system.

I believe Tag's decision made it clear what the conditions were around
abrogating the contract. Once that was done and accepted by Kraft and
Parcells the old contract is moot. Parcells is no longer under contract
to the Patriots. He is, however, bound by the arbitration agreement.
What is at issue is that I see no way Parcells can be found in violation of
that agreement unless it can be shown that he is acting as coach for
the Jets. Sure that might happen but it hasn't yet. My point is that
any further restrictions which are not included in the existing
agreement which impact Parcells earnings or future earnings are grounds
for a civil suit. Tag can penalize the Jets but if that penalty impacts
Parcells earning power and the NFL cannot expect to show he violated the
arbitration agreement then why shouldn't he sue? Looks to me like both
the NFL and Patriots have botched up contracts/agreements by leaving big
holes in them. That is their loss.

BTW - I suspect that if Kraft had fired Parcells before all this stuff
happened, the NE fans would have been really down on him.

The contract is not just about money. This is quite plain by any
reasonable interpretation of the contract. The contract amendment
plainly stated that in the event that Parcells did not coach the

I think we are saying the same thing here except for one nit. I'm
not arguing that Parcells is bound by the interpretation of the
exclusionary clause in the contract as interpreted by Tag.

The statement I recall hearing on the news, however, is not
the one shown above. I recognize the fact that I may have missed

    >My recollection was that Parcells was excluded from working as "Head

To be technical, the ruling was that Parcells is obligated to the NE
Patriots for the 97 season and may not be a coach, GM or other
comparable position in another organization without the consent of the
    Patriots franchise.

    > As for this mornings news, I believe that Tag told the
    >Jets/Parcells to hold off until he has time to review. I
    >don't believe he's taken a position yet.

Yes, that's my understanding. Parcells can't be in contact with the
    Jets until after Tagliabue's ruling.

It seems to me that the Jets are guilty of tampering for talking to
Parcells at all after not being granted permission by the Patriots.
Without permission there is supposed to be no contact at all between
the club and the coach. That the Jets hired him in an ostensibly
non-coaching role for next year with the promise of a head coaching
position for the following year it would seem that they must have had

I'd be curious if Tagliabue had already considered the "tampering"
issue before he rendered his opinion. As well, the Jet's didn't
have to contact Parcells. The media did it for him. If they offered
him a contract, even a verbal request to negotiate one, then that is a
different story and I'd be suprised if they were that stupid. My gut
feeling is that if a tampering charge would have stuck, Kraft would have
gone for it in the last round.

Jets get Parcells, Patriots get picks

NEW YORK - National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue, acting
as sole arbiter in a dispute concerning the services of former Patriots
coach Bill Parcells, ruled yesterday that Parcells can immediately
become head coach of the New York Jets in exchange for four draft picks
that will be awarded to New England over the next three years.

The Patriots will receive the Jets' third- and fourth-round picks in
this April's draft, plus New York's second-round selection in 1998 and
first-round pick in the 1999 draft. In addition, the Jets must make a
$300,000 contribution to the Patriots' charitable foundation.

Last week, Parcells agreed to a deal in which he would become head
coach of the Jets after a year as a consultant. Patriots owner Robert
Kraft protested the arrangement, charging that it violated a ruling by
Tagliabue that prevented Parcells from taking a head coaching or
comparable position with another team unless the Patriots gave
    permission.

For such permission, Kraft initially insisted on getting the Jets'
first-round pick this year, which is the first overall in the college
    draft.

Yesterday, in a 47th-floor board room of a Third Avenue office building
that houses the NFL law firm of Skadden Arts, the sides spent hours
spinning their wheels, with Kraft reiterating his desire for the No. 1
pick, while Jets owner Leon Hess was willing to give only a pair of
    third-round picks.

Shortly before 4 p.m., however, there was a breakthrough. The sides
agreed to binding arbitration, with Tagliabue as the arbiter.

``This will be a decision that will make fans of the New England
Patriots and the New York Jets very happy,'' the commissioner said in
an announcement in the building's lobby.

The deal will allow Parcells to begin coaching immediately with a
six-year deal worth almost $20 million, plus a mutual option for a
    seventh year.

In a statement released by the Jets, Parcells said, ``The club has
shown tremendous faith and confidence in me and my staff. I can't wait
to get to work tomorrow to start rewarding the tremendous confidence
Leon Hess has placed in me.''

Bill Belichick, who had been named the Jets' head coach as part of the
original deal, will revert to assistant head coach - the position he
held under Parcells with the Patriots last year - and likely work with
Al Groh on defense. Belichick has a five-year agreement with the Jets
and is the heir apparent to Parcells.

The Patriots will receive the 61st and 91st selections in this year's
draft. Kraft said there was no discussion of acquiring any current Jets
    players.

The deal clearly was designed by Tagliabue so as not to cripple the
Jets' chances of rebuilding - they're coming off a 1-15 season - yet
the commissioner put stock in the Patriots' contention that Parcells is
worth a No. 1 pick, which he awarded them in 1999.

``I did what I think was fair to both sides,'' said the commissioner.
``I looked at a young team with talented players like the Patriots and
gave them choices that would ensure their future as they begin to lose
    veterans to the salary cap.''

Tagliabue also stoked the Jets-Patriots rivalry by announcing that the
teams would play in a Sunday night game next season.

Tagliabue said he allowed no discussion of possible tampering, nor did
he ever rule solely on the merits of the consulting position as a way
around Tagliabue's previous ruling. The commissioner had phoned both
sides over the weekend in an unsuccessful attempt to nudge them into an
    agreement.

``There were wide differences and both thought it should be resolved
today,'' said Tagliabue. ``They authorized me to make a decision. Both
teams had to give a little and neither got exactly what they wanted.''

According to Kraft, the sides never spoke face-to-face until yesterday
and reports that the Jets had offered a pair of second-round were
    erroneous.

``Both sides wanted to get this resolved,'' said Kraft. ``After
negotiating for many hours, it was obvious neither one of us was going
to budge. I think the commissioner did a terrific job in settling this
dispute. I think from here on out the Jets and the Patriots can deal
with things a lot better. There's no animosity between us.''

Kraft said he backed off tampering charges against Hess and Jets
president Steve Gutman because, ``I felt after speaking to Mr. Hess and
Mr. Gutman face to face that everything they tried to do was above
board. I just wanted to get this over with, get the possible deal for
our team and allow Bill to work again. We didn't want to keep him from
    working.

``In the end, I think we got a heck of a deal. We're getting four young
players who will be able to replace some of our aging players in time.
I didn't want to come out of this with nothing. I thought we deserved
compensation and the commissioner was fair to both sides.

``We were looking for a much bigger settlement, but sometimes your own
view can be narrow. We had to do what was best for both teams and the
NFL. When I finally sat with Leon and Steve, the dicussions had a
different flavor to the ones we'd had over the phone. We had great
plans with that first pick, but in the end it was important to get a
    deal done.''

Tagliabue also had a long chat with Kraft about the fact that even
though he had lost a terrific coach, he also had hired ``one of the
best young coaches'' in the game,'' referring to Pete Carroll.

Hess, 82, who makes few public appearances, said, ``We're very happy
and the commissioner did a hell of a job. Parcells will be on our
    payroll tomorrow.''

given the contract (which should have been more precisely worded,

Kraft made some tactical errors by saying what he wanted (and would

I think Kraft picked the Hess' pocket on this deal. The Pats get
two great picks this year to strengthen the OL, a great pick next
