| I also enjoy Queen. As John says, it's not metal, but probably
as close as many of the other groups we discuss here, at least the
old stuff.
Sheer Heart Attack is my favorite album, although there are tunes
on most of the others which I enjoy. I saw Queen back in the summer
of '80 at an outdoor show in Phoenix. It was an excellent show.
Interesting that this topic was started not long after someone
mentioned the "Starfleet" project album which Brian May and Eddie
Van Halen did. Brian May is an excellent guitarist, I always enjoy
listening to him.

Hot Spaces
Live Killers (2-LP live set)
Freddie Mercury - Mr. Nice Guy (solo LP)
Brian May and Friends - Starfleet Project (w/EVH and others)
Iron Eagle Soundtrack - "One Vision"
Thanks, Greg - I forgot about 'The Game', which has some really good stuff
on there.
I've a fan of almost all of Queen's stuff, from all eras. They seem to have
three time frames -
Early Queen - which includes Queen, Queen II, Day at the Races, and Night
at the Opera. Lots of classic rock here, and a bunch of
radio hits.
Mid Queen - News of the World, The Game, Jazz. This seemed to be the
'hit-making' Queen, with lots of sing-along type hits, and
a little less grandoise production.
Late Queen - The current sound, which hasn't had much success in the
States as of late. But they are still huge throughout the
rest of the world.
Lineup:
Freddie Mercury - Vocals and Piano
Brian May - Guitar Extrordinairre
John Deacon - Bass
Roger Taylor - Drums
I've seen Queen twice live, and had a great time at both shows. Brian May
is a strong live guitarist, and Freddie Mercury (love'm or hate'm) is
a good showman.
FYI - Brian May handcrafted his guitar with his father when he was 14. It
was made from wood that was in a 100-year old fireplace.
Some of my favorite Queen songs: "It's Late", "Stone Cold Crazy", "Let Me
Entertain You", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Sheer Heart Attack", "Spread Your
Wings", "Brighton Rock", "Year of '39", "Death on Two Legs", and many
more....

Queen is easily the greatest living group on the planet, although
I doubt that they could recapture they're past glory. They have
gone the way of so many successful bands, creating shining jewels
in their early days (such as Queen II), only to get fat and lazy,
decomposing into a mish mash of putrifying radio Ga-Ga. This may
seem a bit cynical, but noone - not even Queen - has the
right to deprive the world of their brilliant compositions. Who
could ever again combine the ingredients of Metal and Opera the
way they did? All bands pale by comparison. They should retire now
and rest on their laurels. If I were a physicist, I would program
a particle accelerator to conjour up an anti-matter Queen. And then,
in an open air concert in front of millions, both bands would
appear together on stage - only to disappear in a great flash of
light.

| RE: The Brian May sound - notes 7,8,10,40,42,43
Although Brian May is one of the few guitarists around that use
ridged coins to caress his strings, I think his distinct sound
is derived moreso from the use of his vintage VOX 30 amplifiers,
coupled with his love of ceramic magnets in his pickups. That,
along with his choice of unorthodox scales, USED to give him a
signiture sound.

| 'Its Late' is in the key of A major, whose scale contains the
following notes: A B C# D E F# G#. As far as the riff after the
A chord in the verse, I thought the following pattern sounded
reasonable: E-open 6th, hammeron F#-2nd fret on open E, A-open 5th,
hammeron B-2nd fret on open A. This might not be exactly what Brian
does, but these notes are diatonic. However, I suspect that he adds
chromatic notes for color.

I'm pretty sure there is some wicked finger work involved in this,

That is a great tune. I guess a lot of people think about
a lost love when they're listening to the sounds of the sea,
the cries of a gull, and the wind as it carries your thoughts

How's that for a sensitive 80's kind of metalhead?

That D major riff is a puzzler! When you listen to the song, it
sure does sound like he's playing that D chord AND and a lead lick
of some kind. My theory is this. If he plays that chord with open
E, A and D strings, all he would have to do is lift his finger off
of the 6th string and play a D with no third to give him the following
notes : E A E A D G# (6th string to first). All these notes are
diatonic to the A major scale. Perhaps then, he hits the D chord
once, then sweep picks a D no third.
Either that, or its dubbed!

I agree on that. But to a degree, Queen has always retained *some* of the old
fire - its just that most of it is buried as album tracks. Check out recent
songs like "Hammer To Fall" or "One Vision". (Of course, all the good hard
rockers are penned by Brian May - big suprise, eh?)

| I feel in general that the music biz is coming full circle again and
the next sonic wave you'll hear (and are staring to hear NOW) is a 70s
music revival. Yes folks, return with us now to those thrilling days
of Angel, Sweet, Manfred Mann, Kiss, BOC, Styx, etc. etc.
I think Queen is smart enough to realize this and drop the high-tech
stuff that encompassed Queen over the last few years and return
to their original sound.

So what Alan is saying is that that song *IS* a hit from 1977 (or
so)!!! 8^) But I see Bucks point perfectly, what motivates them to
cover a hit from the late seventies...
BTW: I liked Ian Hunters version better too, Great Whites version
is way lame, IMO. (Gee...I hope I'm not being too slanderous)
Personally, I didn't care for a lot of the music from the late 70s.
I could think of nothing worse than a disco revival!
...but Queen had some (pardon the expression) KILLER stuff back
then. That's the sound I like to remember them by. I'm all in
favor of them doing some music which would seem more characteristic
of their early style. I think they lost a lotta fans because they
strayed too far from it. I'm not saying that I'm in favor of a
70s music revival though. There are plenty enough radio stations
which will play only the "classic rock" stuff already!

| Anyone else out there got the video "Rare Live" ?
I know it's another one of the endless live vids that the band has
currently kickin' around, but this one has a little more on offer.
RL captures the band throughout their career, from rehearsal in
London way back in '73 right through the "heavy years" and into
the generally speaking "softer 80's"
Included are songs from concerts that have taken place around the
world in the last 15 years - from London in '74 to Houston Texas
in 77 to Sydney Australia in 84 back to Knebworth in England during
'86.
All the "biggies" are there with the exception of Bohemian Rhapsody,
which I thought was extremely brave of the producers. Another plus
as far as I am concerned is that the songs are captured live on
or around the years they were first released and consequently,
they sound fresh and alive.
One highlight is the head-banging rubber "lady" at the Hammy Odeon
Christmas gig in '75. I've never seen a rock and roll medely
accompanied by such enthusiasm!!
The only complaints I've got are :
- the video ain't long enough at just around 1 hour
- The last third of the video suffers from overkill in production.
ie A song kicks off in Houston, suddenly cuts to London and
finishes back in Houston (eg.Sheer Heart Attack) Although cleverly
edited, the difference in tempo is obvious and tends to spoil
the enjoyment of the song as a whole.
As a die-hard Queen fan, I'd resisted the temptation of buying
each and every video available. On the whole, I'm glad I bought this one.

| Queen has published a new "old" record ! It's named
'QUEEN AT THE BEEP' and contain the same songs like
Queen II. But there are other versions on it, wich
are very nice to listen to. It was made with old
BBC material. It's available here in Germany I don't
know if the record will be published in US.

Re last.
Yes it is released here in the US, I saw the CD last weekend. I
wanted to get it but I had a hard time convincing myself to spend
$19.00 on a single CD. Is the recording and sound quality good on
it? I might be talked into it if it is really good stuff.

Well, if you aren't a real queen fan it's not needet to buy it.
The quality is a little bit better than the original
recordings. ('Queen' & 'Queen II')
It is really powerful stuff on it, but I just think
let's buy Queen's first CD, than you can say this
the right stuff, let's buy 'Queen at the Beep' now.

However Jacky, the person who runs the fan club is there.
Although it may sound a bit dull talking, dancing, singing, quizzing and

There have been people there from Austrailia, America and generally all over the

A good time is always had by all, so be there or miss a treat.

| Yo MotorMike,
Different kinds (and pieces of the same kind, to a different degree) of wood
have a different resonance. The vibrations of the strings are partly passed
through the wood, so different woods (or whatever materials you use) will
have a different tone.
When I try out a guitar, I always sit down any play it without an amp
for a few minutes to get a feel for it. They really do have individual
characters and it's easy to feel a difference.

| Different woods carry the upper harmonics differently, so as to
radically influence a solid guitar's tone. Mahogany is a relatively
soft wood and sounds like the bass control is pushed up. Ash is
alot harder and heavier, like maple, and tends to sound like the bass
is down and the treble is up. Thats why the Les Paul has a maple top.
It gives the mahogany a certain edge.

The reason why I asked about May's sound to begin with is that I have
an out of phase setting for each pickup on my guitar. I was foolin'

Granted it wasn't exactly like May's sound (my guitar didn't come from

It's a ripping album, definately the hardest rock that Queen put out.
It doesn't have any of the songs you mentioned, but there are a bunch
of good tunes on it. I don't remember any of them getting much
airplay, they were probably a little heavy for most pop/AOR type
stations. It's one of my favorite albums by the band!

on CD last night. Its been sitting in Rockit Records in Nashua for almost
a year, and I always look at it, but never buy it (its a little pricey - its
an import). But I finally broke down and bought it!
Its cool! The sound quality is ok, but not great - there's a bit of hiss that
you can really hear. And the crowd noise is mixed a little too high - they
should have digitally remixed the album, imo. But its cool to hear all these
songs without all the pops from my old album, and it does sound better than
what I had.
And these live versions kick butt! "Death On Two Legs", "Sheer Heart Attack",
"Keep Yourself Alive", "Tie Your Mother Down", the fast version of "We Will

| Queen was the guest on RockLine last night. Some interesting points:
- They are talking about touring the US to support this album, but nothing is
confirmed yet.
- The new album is called 'Innuendo'. They released the title track as the
single in the UK, but "Headlong" in the US.
- The new album sounds like it kicks butt! 'Innuendo' is a real amitious
piece, and reminds me of the 'Night at the Opera' days. A couple other
tracks were played, and were also real guitar-heavy.
- "Innuendo" (the song) has Steve Howe (of Yes and Asia) playing Spanish
guitar in the middle break.
- The entire Queen catalog is going to be released on CD. It's all being
digitally remastered. The first four albums are being released in March,
with the rest to follow soon. They played two advance cuts:
o "Killer Queen" sounded really good - the piano at the beginning
sounded great! And the harmonies really sound alive!
o "Tie Your Mother Down" also sounded killer! Brian May's guitar
tone was nothing short of *monstrous*!
Can't wait to check them all out!
- They are doing some remixes of some songs, and tacking them on as bonus
tracks to some of the CDs. Rick Rubin was one of the people involved.
- There are also some rare studio tracks and BBC tracks that may get tacked
on as bonus songs also.

You know, some songs just gel nicely. Queen wrote one of the best in
that one!
Bismallah means in God's name ( I think )!
But then it could be a corruption of Inshallah which means 'as God
wills it'. I would have thought though that they would be more likely
to shout 'Allah al Akhba' which means (again I think) 'Allah is with
us' when riding into battle. Interpretations differ though!

more along these lines.
The subject (not Freddy Mercury) is not ASKING for one of these, he's
saying that there's ALREADY one, presumably because of what he's done
(killed a man). I never took it to imply that he WANTED one!

Oh, that's a little different. I didn't think it was the cause of his

torment him when he got there, or SOMETHING like that...

521.226 | Brian May live on Z rock | HAVASU::HEISER | melodius volumeus maximus | Fri May 31 1991 22:47 | 31 |
| Those of you that don't get Z Rock missed a heck of an interview/jam
session this afternoon. 35 Million people across the land got to hear
Brian May & his guitar live in the studio. That dude can wail!
I first tuned in while on my trek down here and "Tie Your Mother Down"
was playing. It sounded like a live recording at first because the
guitar was REALLY loud in the mix. It turns out the engineers did it
on purpose so we could really hear him rip it up. He also played along
with "Hit Man" (from the new album) and another old song that I think
is on their first album ("Here I Stand... Down in the City with Hoople
and Me" etc.).
The interview was really interesting too. Highlights were:
- He's been working on a solo album. "Headlong" was going to be on it,
but he gave the band first priority. He says he has a collection of
rockers like it, some instrumentals, and some power ballads.
- He's joined forces with Guild again to get the Brian May model guitar
out on the market again. Things went sour between them when they
started changing things without his approval. He says they've worked
it out.
- He's in the states to keep in touch with the rock world and to get
new ideas for his solo project. He says rock musicians are still
discriminated against in England. They still have that "...get a
proper job mentality" according to him. May claims he can more
identify with the States and feels more accepted here.
- Talked about Def Leppard and the close friendship they've had
together. He's made some guest appearances with them in the past
during concerts. Also said Steve will be greatly missed.

Freddy stated in an interview that We Will Rock You/We Are The
Champions was written loosely as a gay anthem...basically, it's his
outlook on the world as a gay man. Funny, when Freddy wrote this song
in 1978, no one knew what AIDS was, although now in 1991, Freddy has
achieved one more gay reference with those lyrics he had not planned
on. Of course, the song was misunderstood by the general public and
adopted by sports teams as a sports anthem.

You know.... you don't have to ruin your record or needle..... if you
have an old cassette player you don't need, carefully remove the tape
head from the piece of metal that it's glued or welded to, and crazy
glue it on upside down. Your tape player will now play the side of the
tape facing DOWN, BACKWARDS!!!

| I found the following in today's Observer (A UK Sunday Newspaper). This

Queen singer Mercury dying of Aids
==================================
Rock star Freddie Mercury is dying of Aids. In a terse statement issued
yesterday (Saturday) the lead singer of Queen said the time had come for
his 'friends and fans around the world to know the truth'.
He said: 'I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have Aids.
I felt it correct to keep this information private to date in order to protect
the privacy of those around me. However, the time has now come for my friends
and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will
join me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this
terrible disease'.
Rumours swept the music industry earlier this month that the singer, aged 45,
was close to death after he was visited at home by Brian Gazzarrd, head of
the Aids unit at London's Westminster hospital. Fans have been sending flowers
and cards to his Kensington mansion.
Mercury, an admitted bisexual, has lived as a recluse for most of the year. When
he last appeared in public two months ago he was guant and painfully thin. A
number of his closest friends have died from Aids, including his former manager.
Born Frederick Bulsara in Zanzibar, Mercury made his name with a six-minute
'magnum-opus' released in 1975, which proved the longest running British
number one record for 20 years. Sales of the record were boosted by a
promotional video -- revolutionary at the time. Disc jockey Kenny Everett
hailed Queen 'the new Beatles' and Mercury a worthy successor to John Lennon.
His anthem "We are the Champions" was adopted as an official theme song by
the Labour Party at this year's conference.
One friend said last night: 'Freddie never boasted about his bisexuality... but
he was open about it. He bought a real gay style to public through his videos
with the leather bondage trousers and chains, although Queen were never a gay
band'.
Last year he signed a multi-million-pound contract with Hollywood Records. The
company has spent millions of pounds promoting Queen with limited success
because of the lead singer's inability to take part in a promotional video.

There have been numerous tributes to him already, as a master, a showman and the

Freddie is now at peace, and the only suffering is with his family, friends and
fans.
All this news comes today, my Birthday, One of my presents being the Box of

Subject: More info - QUEEN's live gig 20 April 1992
Date: 13 Feb 92 21:35:56 GMT
In response to people asking for more info about the Queen gig in a couple of
months time, here are some sparse details gathered.
The guests that may appear include :
Elton John, Guns N'Roses, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart. Madonna
has been approached to take part apparently.
"It's gonna be bigger than Live Aid" - said an insider....hmmmmm!
One band that have been confirmed to take part are : U2.
Another dead cert are gonna be Guns N'Roses...this is probably due to Axl's
infactuation with Queen and him meeting Brian May at the Gunner's Wembley date
last summer. (Axl also sang a couple of bars to "Sail Away Sweet Sister" that
night).
Tickets are priced at 25 pounds for standing on the pitch, 35 quid for
reserved seating and 50 quid for the Olympic Gallery.

A night at the opera. Guns n' Roses have agreed to perform at the

20th at the 72,000-capacity Wembley Stadium, in London. Expected to
join G n' R are Elton John, George Michael and Extreme. U2 won't

expected to participate, possibly via satellite. At press time, talks
with Madonna, Eric Clapton, Prince and Rod Stewart were taking place,
although not all were being asked to perform. The three-hour concert,
which will be televised live, will feature twenty-minute sets by a
half-dozen or so artists. A forty-five-minute set by the remaining
members of Queen will follow. Tickets for the benefit sold out within
six hours of going on sale.

521.326 | Queen video - $8.99 at BJ's! | DPE::STARR | They call it Paradise, I don't know why | Mon Apr 06 1992 16:52 | 26 |
| I picked up the new (re-released) Queen video, called "We Will Rock You".
This is a bargain - an entire Queen concert, over 90 minutes long, and its
on sale at BJ's Warehouse for only $8.99!!!!
This is real similar musically to the 'Live Killers' album, except that it
also has material from 'The Game' on there. Otherwise, the arrangements (and
even the songlist) is pretty much the same. There's a ton of music here,
and most of their hits are represented:
"We Will Rock You (rocking version)", "Killer Queen", "Bohmeian Rhapsody",
"Tie Your Mother Down", "Get Down Make Love", "Play The Game", "This Thing
Called Love", "Sheer Heart Attack", "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions",
"Keep Yourself Alive", "Dragon Attack", "Under Pressure", "Let Me Entertain
You", "I'm In Love With My Car", "Love Of My Life", "Another One Bites the
Dust", and a bunch more! (Not to mention the guitar and drum solos that are
thrown in.)
This really does capture the band at their peak! The performance (filmed at
the Montreal Forum) is excellent. The sound (Hi-Fi Dolby) is pretty good
for the era. My only complaint is that the lighting isn't that great, many
times its too dark onstage to get a real look at what Brian May is playing.
Oh well, nitpicking.
For the price, you can't go wrong in picking this up if you're a Queen fan!

BJs on a one day pass. They charge a 5% surcharge above what a regular
member can get the item for. So, they would add an extra $.45 onto the
$8.99.

My first impressions are:
1) It's pretty old.....not much in the way of a 'show'.
2)Freddie was ON! Not pleasing to the eyes but ON in the way of
talant. I was just thinking through the whole thing how he said he
was the best-looking man in rock.
3)It had all the GREAT songs and I was on the edge of my seat the
whole time.
4) BUY IT if you like Queen.

Agreed...I love his sound, playing, and compositional skills, although
I feel Freddy was the real life in Queen, I won't deny any of the other
members their musicianship, chops, and insight, which helped make one of
the best rock bands ever imvho.
I think Queen, for a 70s band, blew doors on Led Zep...

I'm starting to really get into the later stuff which I used to hate.
I've actually been learning tunes off "A Kinda Magic" in the hopes

a killer opener.
Also am in love with the instrumental version of "Who Wants to Live
Forever". Some incredible soulful playing by Freddie on that.
