Hi again,
I wanted to again thank everyone who came down to the show last night!!
Paul, Vicki, GTI, Wendi and anyone else I have forgotten I saw there.
The Channel staff was impressed with the band and your support, so they
are giving us a `promotion'. We are being sheduled (as we speak) to
appear in a "best of the up and coming boston bands" show that the
channel sponsors in conjunction with WBCN. The tentative date is April
13th, but I'll know more later.
Thanks again...we couldn't have done without cha. JV hopes to improv
the show for the next gig, so we can take it to a higher level.
Regards,
Buck, JV git

| Update:
Jam Vac are making plans now to head in the studio early summer to
record a 4-5 song demo. We will be enlisting the talents of Geoff Gee,
a SMOKIN keyboardist (this guy is hot!) for this effort, and may become
a part of JV in the future, but its hard to tell right now. The sound
will definitely be affected....wether it will be for the better or
worse, or how much of the keyboards will appear in the final mix is
hard to tell now...rehearsals will make that a little clearer. Also, JV
may add female backing vocals to the sound for more diverse
arrangements, but the band is still striving for a raw, rocking feel to
the music.
Weekend Chets and Channel gigs are currently in the works, I'll keep ya
posted. Thsoe wishing to be on the JV gig/info mailing list can

| Hi Y'all
Well, I'm back in town after a wild n wooly VACATION to Colorado
(amoung other places). Greg House is now the owner of a rare Jam Vac
chronological compilation tape of the band, so you can bug him for dups
if you so care too! :^)
Jam Vac just finished a photo shoot, and we are in the pre-production
stage of an upcoming 4 song demo from the band. We haven't cemented
all the songs into the line-up yet, but the tape should be pretty cool
in the end. Look for Jam Vac on the airwaves and in your local record
store by September!!!
Also, we should be hitting the Woosta bar scene shortly. Places
like Ralph's, the Blue Parrot, and a few other dives will be graced
by our presence shortly it seems.
Well, dats about it....hope to be delivering some goodies to y'all
real soon.

Looking forward to the EP.

the mix? Or do you not run the bass through the mains?
Seems like most bands these days mike everything and run it through the

this, I had major feedback problems when we played Sat before last!

stage amps for monitoring purposes...and sometimes we get too loud
on-stage. JV has been playing more acoustic guitar of late (no, we
haven't been listening to LIES LIES LIES LIES!), so we're getting a new
perspective on volume.
Also, found a video of the band...about 6-7 songs...I'll copy and let
it become bootleggable by the noters...its a cool video...great sound,
but you can't see too much of the stage (oh well).
The pre-production on the 4 song ep is coming along great...this

studios. They're 16tk format, and record all the `hot garage acts you
hear on FNX' here. They had the best staff/equip/price/performance
ratio we found. Some studios had great equip but bozos running it, so
we blew them off (One guy at a local 24TK studio replied when we asked
of his engineering credentials "well, I used to play in this band
around here, but I know you've never heard of them, so anyway they
broke up and now I work here as an engineer" - Brilliant, I know!).
The 24tk studios didn't seem worth the xtra $$$ in retrospect, so FA
looks like they've got our business. The band is doing the
arrangements and I'm producing, so it should be ok (I'm a better
producer than an engineer I'll admit!).

The 2nd one, recorded at Normandy Sound, ran a

FYI -- Jamaican Vacation aka Jam Vac aka JV has finally completed
pre-production (including a budget!) and heads into Fort Apache studios
this Saturday to lay down basics on the long-awaited JV-EP, _A Trip
Worth Takin'_. ODs are scheduled for Saturday, the 29th, and the
mixdown should happen some evening the following week, so the tentative
street date for _A Trip Worth Takin'_ is Tuesday, August 8th!!! For
those familiar with our stuff, the tues on this effort are the
following:
A B
o Do You Feel 4 Me? o Hop, Skip, n' a Jump
o Kiss n Tell o Be My Girl
The band is speculating HS&J to be the first single, but who knows?!
I think you guys will like it, even thought its not quite Anthrax!!!

| re: changing name
At first thought, I would say "no big deal, we'll just change it". Let's face
it - I would rather that they accept the music as is. That is the most
important aspect of the whole project. Unless you are *really* attached to the
name, I would think about changing it. For the most part, (and you know this as
well as anyone), these people usually know their business. And for a new band,
the name has a lot of connotations that may inhibit airplay/sales.
Of course, I can also see the other side of the coin - if you give in so
easily on the first issue, where does it stop? Where do you draw the line?
But, IMO, the music (and the personnel) are the most important factors in a
band situation. I personally would be willing to compromise the band name, in
exchange for furthering the band's aim.

| Thanks for the opinions Alan!
Their gripe (and they all said the exact same thing, which makes it
even scarier!) was that upon hearing the name, they thought we were all
from Haiti, with dreadlocks for days, and played trad. Reggae. I said,
"No, we're more rock orientated with a slight, but not too prominent
pop flavor"...they said "Oh, like Eddie Grant?" So, I can see where
they're being misled. They also said that Reggae is a genre like
Gospel and folk which isn't given a lot of `respect' as far as sales
and promotion go (read `interest'), so sticking with the name would
probably lead to severe marketing problems due to the above
misconceptions.
I can't begin to imagine, however, a name that would really `fit' the
type of stuff we're doing?!

No, it doesn't *have* to. But if you plan on market ing your group to a large
audience, and attracting the interest of professionals in the industry, then I
think it is very advantageous to have a compatible name. And in this business,
you need every edge you can get!
> Look at reggae groups like Bim Scala Bim.. or Plate of Shrimp?... or any
> other band for that matter...
Yeah - and look how big they are. They've been kicking around the Boston club
scene for years! I'm not saying that they haven't made it just becuase of
their name. But their refusal to pick a more 'commercial' name may also be
indicitive of the band's negative (non-cooperative?) attitude.
> (do you think "White Lion" describes what type of music they play?)
Yes! I think it fits perfectly! (Without ever hearing a note, if someone told
me the name of the band, I would immediately assume pop or pop/metal. Really!)
Its just that, on the road to success, there are gonna be a lot of issues
that you'll want to take a stand on. You have to realize which ones are
important, and which ones you can be flexible on. IMO, this is one of the
latter.

I'd suggest changing it for the reasons Alan stated. It can only
help to have the name tell something about the band.
Actually, Bim Skala Bim does tell you what kind of music they play,
Ska. Ska is a type of music which has an upbeat, danceable,
reggae-ish feel to it and that's Bim Skala Bim's sound.
BTW, good luck in the studio Buck.

| I think that I'd probably go along with a name change too. The only
thing you may lose from that is the exposure you've already had in the
Boston area from gigging. This could probably be made up (with terms
like "NewName: Formerly Jamacian Vacation").
My opinion on the name deal is that the name doesn't NECESSARILY have
to tell you what kind of music you play, as long as it doesn't lead you
to think of a type of music which you don't play. I guess that's kind
of a clumsy statement. I'm just trying to say that if you have a name
that implys nothing, that's infinately better then one that implies
something incorrect. Kind of along the lines of what we're told to
tell customers here at the CSC; If you don't know the answer, tell the
customer you don't know then go find out, but DON'T tell them something
wrong.
The name "The Beatles" doesn't really imply a type of music to me (in
the name itself). Jamacian Vacation does. I was kind of surprised
that it wasn't reggae when I heard the first tape of the band.
I can see where the people that'll have to market you would balk at a
name that implies a certain sound that you don't have (especially when
it's not an especially popular sound as well). Kind of a drag, 'cause
you've been using it so long...

| The "Dixie Dregs" finally succumbed to pressure from their record
company to change the name to "The Dregs". The record company felt
that the name led people to believe they were yet another Southern
boogie band hanging onto the coattails of the Allman Brothers.
So they changed their name. Did it help? No, only in that it made
the record company happy. But that's probably a better reason than
any.

| Well I've been waiting patiently for the budgetary info., but haven't
seen it, so I figured I'd toss in a little reminder. I'm not asking
you to tell us all how much you spent, but how did you figure out
how much time you'd need? Are recording and mixdown times priced
at the same rate?
Secondly, is the tape completed yet? How do you go about getting
it pressed? What's it gonna cost you to put it on vinyl? Does
the indy label (if you get one) pay for everything up front (i.e.
do they take the risk)? Or, do you have to fork out all the cash
for the actual pressing? Are you even going to put it on vinyl?
With the state of vinyl these days, has anyone suggested that an
EP might not be such a good idea?

| Yeah, you'll note that I did question whether you were going to
put the EP on vinyl or not. I just automatically think of an EP
as being on vinyl, but it didn't make sense given the way albums
are going (i.e. down the toilet).
I did read an article (an old "So You Wanna Rock and Roll" piece)
in Metronome awhile back in which Mark Sutton interviewed Carter
Alan. I thought that Carter said they pay more attention to vinyl
at 'BCN as related to the Boston Emissions and Nocturnal Emissions
programs, but I could be all washed up. I'll check it tonight.
One thing I do remember for sure is that Carter hinted that "garage"
sounding demos (i.e. ones that aren't overproduced) have a better
chance of getting airplay on 'BCN than super-produced (e.g. Hirsch
Gardner-type) demos.

513.153 | Sir Morgan's Review | BUSY::JMINVILLE | Nemo Me Impuni Lacesset | Tue Oct 03 1989 11:39 | 60 |
| Here's a review of last night's wicked-awesome-gnarly-happenin'
show at Sir Morgan's Cove...
I don't know all of the songs by name, so this is gonna be a sort
of 'general' review.
Peasant Kings kicked total butt last night with an energy-packed
show that kept the audience on the edge of their seats for nearly
the entire 50 minute set. Con Murphy's lyrics and emotional lead
vocal delivery set the mood as the band whisked through the (I would
guess) ten, or so, original songs. Guitarist-extraordinaire Bill
Buckley was burning up the fretboard and providing some really
'perfect' axe-work -- a personal high-point for me is this guy's
flawless delivery of what I like to call the 'wanged harmonic tone'.
Bill's tonal diversity was really showing last night despite early
mix problems that left some of his performance during the first
song virtually inaudible. Good use of 'blue' notes and a lot of
interesting chromatic passing tones too. I looked around at some
of the people during a few of Bill's solos and they were literally
slack-jawed at the sheer virtuosity of these solos.
Doug was laying down his usual clockwork tempos and a few of his
riffs were on the borderline of being physically impossible. He's
the kind of drummer that really 'makes' a band, because he lays
down a solid groove, keeps it simple, but can cut loose on some
serious fills/riffs at just the right moment. The song with the
strange beat at the beginning was the only weakpoint in the rhythm
department, but it may not have been the drums per se that were
to blame here (could have been other members, too hard for me to
tell).
Stevie K. was keeping things interesting both musically and in terms
stage presence. His bass playing was good (as usual), but I thought
it was too subdued in the overall mix (usually he stands out). He did
a great job on background vocals and kept the visuals happening
by being very mobile on stage.
Overall I was very impressed with last night's performance. I can't
wait to listen to the tape tonight (I'll post a review of it as
soon as I can), btw let us know which song to push on the radio
stations when we call in for local songs!!!. Anyway, my personal
picks for best songs of the night were:
1. That bluesy sort of tune that goes from an A7 to a D11 (without
the C#) -- I am totally guessing at this, but Bill could
this song be "Cruise Control"???
2. "Hop, Skip, and A Jump" as always is a real show-stopper.
3. The other one that really stood out for me was, again I'm
guessing, "Last Scream".
Everyone who didn't show up missed a fantastic show and you
should make every effort to catch these guys at the next gig!!!
Peasant Kings is a great combination of very hard, driving, heavy,
rock and roll (with just a touch of country and reggae thrown in
for posterity). A band for the 90's!!!
joe.

That sounds even better. I'm in Valbonne (@VBO), Extreme-South-Est of France,
very close to the Italian border (and Monaco too).

Oh! I see you can speak the basic words to survive here ;-)
BTW this is a Belgium beer not a french beer :-). A french beer would be for
example "Kronenbourg 1664", but you can still ask for a Guiness or an Heineken
they are very well known (hopefully).

513.197 | A Review -- really just my 2 cents | BUSY::JMINVILLE | Probitas laudatur et alget | Mon Dec 11 1989 14:13 | 26 |
| Yes Bill, Dan and I were there. I missed ScReAm, but I must say
that PK stole the show over Agent 13 and Network. Agent 13 should
stick with the ska stuff (although the Peter Gunn/Secret Agent Man
medley was very well done), because they are far-and-away stronger
with that type of material -- the rest of their set sounded like
Holiday Inn lounge music to me...
Network was OK, but lacked energy. I thought that their drummer
was really good.
PK had a superb energy level going and kept it there throughout
the set. You guys have the distinct ability to go off on these
groove-oriented jam-like things that really give a great "band feel"
to the songs. Con still blows me away with his songwriting abilities
(you can't tell me that you have nothing to do with the arrangements
though ;^). His lyrics are full of emotion and it comes through
in the music too!!!
My only complaints are that we couldn't hear your guitar too well
and the background vocals were buried. Also, the mix was slightly
muddy.
Great show!!! If any of you noters haven't seen Peasant Kings yet,
what are you waiting for??? Get out there and see 'em.

Get out the allen keys and WD40...
:)
Hey, did they ever *expand* Chets ?? I know at one time, they'd
actually bulldozed the back yard...But then everything halted.

| Naw...
Either someone ran off to Brazil with the funds, or they couldn't get
the town ordinance to build a 1,000 capacity club, or they thought they
wouldn't have the market for that size with teh stiff drinking laws,
or they thought it would ruin the "diner" atmosphere. It *is* voted
best local dive in NE ya know!
They left it as is...

| Well, another rousing PK show at Chets last night. I thought we played
really well, I guess Neal did a great job on the sound, too, from the
feedback I've gotten from people in the crowd. It would have been a
perfect night, except for the drunk who pushed another drunk, and both
over a my monitor, trashing my mic stand, and the mic stand trashing
my Yellow Ibanez! Yeah, I was pissed...that guitar was in showroom,
rbrand new condition!! Now it has a nice nick in the paint on the
upper bout. :^( They also trashed Neal's monitor and Mic stand as
well! I HATE drunks!
Other than that, it was a good show...hope Vicki, TCR1, and Ticketwench
enjoyed the show!
Thanks gals...good to see ya out and about...
Cheers
Buck
PS - Oh yeah, finally heard back...we missed out on the Amnesty
International thing...out of 40 finalists, they selected 5 bands, of
which we were not one of them. Oh well, I never thought the songs we
sent in were that great anyways, but it was good we got that far. I
wasn't expecting to win that anyways. I *do* expect to win the Sir
Morgan's Semi-finals though...I've cooked up some cool ideas for that
one!!!

| Well, after several disagreements in vision (band direction, goals,
etc.), I've decided to leave the Peasant Kings (Ok Rob, stop
laughing!). ;^)
I think they'd do better with someone who shares their views on
"what's good", "What's bad", and "making it".
Farewell...

| Well, tonight is the night...the PKs enter the Sir Morgan's Battle of
the Bands Semi-finals. Yours truely will NOT be playing, but Victoria
& I will be in attendance for the show. A special thanks and best
wishes to Ralph Crowley, for filling the lead guitar slow in PK...good
luck guy(s)!
Here's my early evening prediction...Black Water Junction will take
this Semi-finals round.
FWIW,

| Yo, 'Breath!
Yeah...it came down to me against the bassist in a war of "who's
opinion is "right". The bassist felt that sloppy playing, playing
out of tune, playing weird, mis-mashed sets, and having "no image"
was the "cool" & "artsy" (fartsy :==wjb) thing to do.
Comments were also made:
(the above comments) "were 'rock n roll'"
"held a lot of integrity"
"wasn't selling out"
Moi? I don't like weird sets, I like them logical in order...I don't
like playing out of tune, I'm an intonation freak...I don't like
getting up on stage and NOT looking like a band...In general, I
like a band to have 'control' (thanks Janet)...to know what the F*%#
they're doing...like Farrenheit...they're one tight, bitchin' band!!!
I felt both parties involved (moi and them) would be better off split.
BTW: Last night the "good" band didn't win (my prediction)...they lost
to an out of tune, thrashy garage band...so, I guess my old band proved
me wrong on this one...in Woosta "Grunge rools over Talent!"
Buck, sticking to his guns about 'control'

Well... that's cool Buck. Playing in a band takes a lot of
your spare time, and if it's not going where you want it to,
then why bother?
/Motorbreath.. you need to start a band called Buckley, of which
you'd have total control.

Hey, Buck... Greg loaned me PK tape yes-turd-day(it wasn't a very
good Friday at all! ;( ), and although it was not in my normal
listening genre, it made my drive home a lot better!
It was not what I expected at all! The mental picture I had of your
band is more like mega distortion, Yngwie lick/speed metal! I do like the
tape a lot, and it's really too bad that things happened the way they
did. I'm sure sooner or later you'll find "musicians" that suits your
standard... Good luck!
