Ive seen both bands(Ant & Meg). Both put on great shows. Anthrax
has more humor in their show. When they do I am the man the place
will go wild I guarrentee it!!
Megadeth is there more to play and dont really loosen up. Ive seen
mega twice once at the Paradise in Bos and the 2nd time was with
Dio on the Dream Evil tour. They had good muzik but werent real
friendly w/the audience unlike Anythrax(who by the way I saw w/Metal
Church at the Paradise in Bos).
Both will give you your moneys worth 8^)

| A comment on Dave Mustaine - he is the only LA rocker in 'The Metal Years'
that came across as half-way intelligent. And Megadeath provided the
best live action of the film also. So even though I'm not their biggest

I own one MD album, "So Far, So Good, So What" and I
like the band. BUT... does anybody else feel that they'd be
MUCH better if they had someone else sing instead of Dave
Mustaine??? The guy can't sing, and makes up for his lack
of vocal ability with falsetto and growls.
Also, I think he doodles too much on guitar, all the time.
His playing style is probably recognized as Megadeth's sound,
though, I don't know.

I listened to Liar reeeeeaal close, and you're kinda right,
he stays on key at least, but I still think he's a *weak*
singer. The music's still great, though.
I'll have to check out other albums.
And please... everybody please listen to liar and see if he
takes a breath in "that" part of the song (you'll know what I mean
when you hear it). I don't think there's any way... he musta done
5 words at a time, and then dubbed them all together.

Killing is my business ..and business is good.. is the first
effort by the origional line up with a raw crunchy sound.
Peace sells but whose buying is IMO the best of the three.
It's got more of a polished sound but still got a good metal punch.
AND...it has the origional line up.
So far ...so good...so what is the best sounding but a new
line up kind of reduces the punch..too bad though. Its good but
in a diff way..

Well, I listened to it in the car this morning ... here are
my thoughts:
1) They are great musicians.
2) I love "Peace Sells ..."
3) However, the rest of the songs I'm not overly impressed
with ...
a) I couldn't understand a word they said
b) On a couple songs the vocals were 'behind' the instr-
uments ... as if the lyrics weren't as important as
the actual song.
Basically I paid $15 for the title track.

songs.I love that Mechanix tune. It's Metallica's "Four Horsemen"
tune that Dave helped write when he was in the band.BUT.The lyrics
are twisted around.
Nobody does it better,
At turnin the screws than me
I do it for my life...F**k ya!
Made my crankshaft spin
Made my pistons bulge
Made my ball bearings melt from the heat!!!!!!!!
Oh Ya Ya!
Metallica's Four Horsemen:
..On leather steeds they ride
They come to take your life
Under the dead of night
We the four horsemen ride
So choose your way and die!!!!!!!
Oh Ya Ya!

I just saw the video for "...Nice Guy" and also saw The Metal Years and
Dave went through all the typical bullsh*t like, "well, I don't do

What is it with bands who have "morals" and then sell out? You'd think
since they are constantly being documented that they would keep their
words, at least for their own posterity. I guess the dollar signs are
more important than values. Oh, well.

Dave Mustaine:
"We just want people in the UK to know that despite the
rumours and heresay, Megadeth is really healthy right now,
and can't wait to make 1990 the biggest year in the band's
history."
"I'm sure you'll understand that I can't really disclose
any details of the Megadeth line-up at the moment (that's
coz he hasn't got anyone other than Dave Ellefson! -Flip)
but Kerrang! will be notified as soon as we can tell you."
"Megadeth is coming back, real powerful. I'm real excited
by the (demo) tapes we've been doing. I can tell you that
I'm just as uncompromising as ever!"
Megadeth will go in the studio over the next few weeks and
plan to release the new lp in the summer.
"At the moment, we're lookiing for a producer, as you know,
we've never ended an album with the same producer we started
with. I am looking for someone who can make constructive
criticisms on the material - someone I can work in conjunction
with who's not afraid to speak up to Dave Mustaine."
Problems on the 1988 Irish tour where he made seemingly
sectarian comments onstage... (It's a damn good job BK ain't
around to comment on this bit! -Flip)
"I was very ignorant of the situation when I went over there.
Like alot of people I wanted to say I have Irish ancestry. Now
I've learnt that if you're not full-blooded Irish, then shut
the F*CK up, y'know?"
"I've learnt alot more about the problems since we were there.
I've written a song that will be on the new album about what
happened. I just hope that they'll have us back, because I
really want to play there again."
Megadeth's current single, No More MR Nice Guy is at number
18 in the UK charts:
"It's an indication that we did it right, UK fans are always very
intelligent and aware. (8^) -Flip) We're not exempt from any
criticism for doing it, but it's not a Megadeth song, it's an
Alice Cooper song selected by Wes Craven."
"I think that if it gets more people turned on to what Megadeth
is about, or what Speed Metal is about, then it's doing a job and
breaking down boundaries..."
On Desmond Child:
"Yeah, well... Desmond had his way of doing it, and I had mine.
And we ended up doing it *my* way..."

Hmmm.... Marty was always more exotic than your average shredder.
Some of the scales he uses ain't your typical harmonic minor or

He has chops that Mustaine (who sucks anyway) can only dream of.

150.85 | Mustaine's apology to the Irish | DUCK::PERKINSP | Positive Mental Octopus | Fri Mar 22 1991 07:21 | 61 |
| Copied from Kerrang! without permission:
Megadeth Motormouth Dave Mustaine has defended his decision not to play
any gigs in Northern Ireland following the controversy that arose after
the show at the Antrim Forum in May 1988.
The band play just one show in Ireland, south of the border at Dublin
Point Depot April 1st. Mustaine said that the band could not come back
to Northern Ireland at the moment, " because of what happened the last
time I was their, with my drunken outbursts.
"I feel I have to re-evaluate our purpose for going back and begin to
repair our relationshop with our fans. I don't think I can honestly
say that I don't want to play there again, but for now we will just
have to see how Dublin turns out."
He did not rule out the appearance in the province some time in the
future, saying that it was very possible but it would depend alot on
how the Dublin show went.
It remains to be seen if fans of the band will risk travelling to
Dublin in what could well be a very politically charged atmosphere.
During the 1988 Antrim performance, Mustaine told the crowd that he had
Irish blood and that "Ireland should be given back to the Irish". He
also dedicated songs to "the cause" and shouted "victory to the IRA".
Certain sections of the crowd then spat and threw missiles at the band.
Some tried to climb on stage but were held back by security men. After
the concert, Mustaine, who was obviously drunk, was ushered off the
stage by his tour manager and it was later reported that the band left
the town under a police escort to protect them from rioters outside the
Forum.
Following the incident and many letters of complaint, Mustaine, whose
mother is Irish, went on the record to apologise for his outburst at
Antrim. He said that he had not fully understood the situation in
Ireland and that his naivety had been exploited by people he had met
during the Irish tour.
The incident made such an impression on the musician that he wrote Holy
Wars about the experience which reached number 12 in the UK singles
chart late last year.
Although widely believed to be written specifically about the situation
in the Middle East, the song was actually an apology to the fans he had
offended and also a statement against wars caused by religious
differences.
The lyrics included: Fools like me who cross the sea/And come to
foreign lands/Ask the sheep for their beliefs/Do you kill on God's
command?/Up on my podium as the know-it-all scholar/Up on my soapbox,
leader, out to change the world/Down in the pulpit, as the holier than
thou/Messenger of God.
Now Mustaine urges fans to forget what happened saying: "I was
misinformed and didn't understand what I was talkinf about."
He added that he is personally against all violence about religion and
hopes fans will forget their differences and enjoy the show.

Being the UFO expert in here, I can enlighten. The song is about a
movie, which was based on an incident that took place in Roswell

unidentified craft crashed at the site and 2 to 3 alien bodies were
recovered as well as the craft itself.

Yep, movie is by the same name.
Hanger 18 is kind of like a gathering of a bunch of UFO crash
incidents. There was one or two where at least one live alien was
taken into captivity (known affectionately as Krill). I don't
have alot of information about this in particular, just second
hand information about top secret documents so I don't know if
experiments were done, but I believe so. Weird stuff I know, but
I got alot of juicy stuff about the whole phenomenon.

I saw them a few months back, and they were sooooo tight. Dave
Mustaine has a great voice, but more than anything else he is a superb
guitarist. I know he's probably improved over time, but right now he's
as good as he needs to be.
He carried off the solos effortlessly. Marty Friedman is a better
guitarist, but then he doesn't have to sing.
As for being compared to Metallica, I like Metallica's album's
better in general, but from the live Metallica I have seen and heard,
Megadeth outperform them.
Their present line up is probably the best they have had.

| Where is Great Woods (Am I being thick!) :~}
I saw them at Poole Arts Centre and they do seem to of been having a
few problems with the sound (technicians fault apparantly).
It was quite obvious that Dave Mustaine was getting really annoyed at
the sound coming back through his monitor (although it all sounded fine
to us). He left the stage a couple of times to have a word with the
technician because he simply could not hear himself.
Right at the end before any of the encores, he kicked the monitor
off the stage. (The monitor was about a quarter of the width of the
stage and needed about four big guys to lift it back on again). As you
probably know he does kick boxing and obviously has a pretty powerful
kick.
So I do feel sorry for him, but on the night the sound coming
towards us was fine. I know that this was not the case when they played
in London, but I suppose it's hard to be consistently good.
Has anyone seen the Rusted Pieces Vid yet. I know it's only a
compilation of previous music vidoes, but it's a great chance to see

You'd expect that with a group as professional as Megadeth they could
get past the small irritations like feedback (not always easy I know,
but....).
When they were over here touring, they had as support
Alice in Chains and
The Almighty
Neither of which I am that fond of, but I can put up with The Almighty.
It would of been superb if they had Anthrax playing as well (If that's
what you meant in your note).
What's the loudest band you've ever heard...for me it's a pretty
unknown group called Mirror Mirror (an offshoot of Onslaught). They had
a really small room as a venue, and a stack system suited for an arena.
I couldn't hear for a day (quite worrying I must add).

I like both bands and would say that up until Rust In Peace,
Metallica's albums were better. Much more consistant and less of what
seemed like filler material. However, I personally like Rust In Peace
better then any of Metallica's work. Marty Friedman puts a spark in
that band that it always needed. I'd love to see them live with their
current lineup!
I've kind of burned out on Metallica. I don't know if I'll even bother

Oh, and by the way Rust in Peace rules! Seriously up there with the
classics. It is my opinion that all the best thrash and speed metal
seem to have been produced in the last two years! With the possible
exception of Metallica 'Ride the Lightning'. I like all Metallica
stuff, even in its own way AJFA, but the stuff that has come from
Slayer, Pantera, Anthrax, Megadeth, Annihilator and others leaves
everything but RTL in the shade!

When thrash first hit the scene (man),the only way to hear it was
mainly through tape trading. Remember,in `83-1985 bands like Metallica,
Slayer,Exodus and all were all on (then) small indepedent labels.
Getting recordings in your home town was very rare, and the only shop
i could get the latest thrash albums was a shop called Shades in London.
Thus,i have the first Megadeth demo. Plus Suicidal Tendencies,DRI,
Slayer,Metallica,Testament or Legacy as they were known in the demo
days),Death Angel,Coroner) and 100`s of others.
Funny how these bands are now so big now.

I know that this opinion won't be very popular in this conference, but
here goes anyway... RIP is one of the best albums of ALL TIMES.
All of the songs are killer. I also think that 'Go to Hell' is
great. It sounds like the older stuff. The video is great Mustaine
kicks some guy hell and then chokes the devil.. Okay maybe Mustaine
growls in some parts, but it comes out sounding great. Now for the
part of my note that won't be very popular...
Metallica is like Milli Vanilli compared to Megadeth!!!!

I wonder if they're heading in the direction of Metallica.
AJFA was the 'technical' album as was RIP. I'm just wondering if the
change from RIP (better than AJFA) to this new melodic sound will be
like AJFA to Metallica. Could Mustaine be selling out after seeing
Metallica go 4 (almost 5 now) time platnum.

I hate to say it. But SF,SG,SW was terrible. Megadeth rebounded with a

was part of a 'plan'. I think the addition of Nick M. and
Marty F. made Megadeth, Megadeth. I hope all four work together
to come out with one of the best albums yet. (although
I think RIP is unbeatable)

I HEARD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard/saw a new Megadeth song/video on MTV!!
It was Symphany (sp?) of Destruction!!!
Okay, a couple of things.... First off it DOES have a different
sound than RIP, not more popish, just a bit different. YOu can
tell it is Megadeth. If this is what the rest of the album sounds
like, then I will admit one thing, they changed their sound a bit.
BUT it is not any more 'poseish' then their other stuff.
It roolz!!!!!!! REALLY COOL!!!
(I will admit one more thing though... There WAS one lame part,
at the end they have that Kennedy quote, that is also at the
end of a Living Color song 'Ask not what your country can do
for you, ask what you can do for your country. Then again they
had a simliar thing on RIP on 'Take no Prisoners')
Over all RULIN!!!!!!

I've decided that I don't think the title track on the new album is all

I'd heard [and liked alot] "Symphony of Destruction". But then
I thought back to the time I bought "Peace Sells ..." on the
merit of the title track and hated the rest of it.
So to all owners of the new album, how does the rest compare to
"Symphony of Destruction"? Is it somewhat similar, with under-
standable lyrics, and crankin' instrumentation, or is the rest
of it heavy/thrashy noise like most of their stuff?
Thanks for any info.

There's a only a couple of real "thrash"-y songs on there. *I* can
understand the vocals without a problem, but then again, I could

Overall, I'd say it's more along the lines of "Rust ..."- that

on it. I'm not a big Megadeth fan, the only other one I have is RIP,
(I think, thats the last one right?). So far I like it alot better.

Shotgun is a cool band, musician wise, but they are nancy-blouse...

lyric writing lessons from Warrant!!
JMHO, of course. Apples and oranges too. Megadeth is something you listen

guitar work. TinTin is useless as a lyrics writer. I guess it's to be

I did contribute a little here and there...But mostly got told to shut
up and play the guitar. :)
Doesn't matter though - see I'm a firm beleiver that lyrics are just
fillers between guitar solos... SO - If a band has lyrics, they'd best
be good ones, or I won't even here 'em.
Now, for an example of my lyrical writing ability, just ask me for a copy
of the lyrics to the 'MIDI Rack Puke Rap'. :) That was in 1991 - this
year it's not a HUTCH but a Curio Cabinet. :)

Bwahahahahahaha!!! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
But seriously, I actually kinda liked it, though listening to

First we had the Foreigner school of painful guitar playing and
now we have the Megadeth school of painful singing.

Re: Andy
No, not the name of the band (though it just adds to the impression),
but the themes explored by the lyrics. For example:
I had wrists donning slits
Flowing constantly
My broken body in a wreck
wrapped around a tree
...
No escaping pain
You belong to me
Clinging on to life
By the skin o' my teeth
...
That's what I mean by "Death Metal" as opposed to the general non-death
themes in music by Queensryche, Extreme, UKJ, Aerosmith (with only
a couple of exceptions), etc., etc...

Wrapped around a tree
A crosswalk hit and run
The finish line for me
People clutter in the gutter
Take a look and see
No escaping pain
You belong to me
Clinging on to life
By the Skin O' My Teeth
My blood flows through th streets
Deluge from the wounds
Empty jar of sleeping pills
On the dresser in my room
My wet brain, Neighbor cranes
His neck to see
In time the white lights of a train
Bearing down on me
No escaping pain
You belong to me
Clinging on to life
By the Skin O' My Teeth
I wont feel the hurt

Those lyrics are nothing compared to what Death Metal really is like!
Megadeth is speed metal.
Where *IS* Duy when you need a good Death Metal lyric..... Anyway,
check the lyric note.... You'll probably see some in there....
Metallica aren't death metal either, but they sure had the word "die"
in their songs quite a bit on the first three albums! Like:
So Let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born Pharoah's child
I'm creeping death
...
Die, by my hand
I travel 'cross the land
Killing first born man
or...
Who made you God to say
I'll take your life from you?
Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die... yeah
Burning in my brain
I can feel the pain
Waiting for the sign
to flick the switch of death
the final curtain call I see
Death in the air
strapped in the electric chair
this can't be happening to me
|
150.494 | | WRKSYS::CASHMON | | Tue Nov 17 1992 19:34 | 17 |
| Even though some of Megadeth's lyrics use death imagery, they don't really fit
into the category of death metal. Slayer is a better example of that genre,
as are other bands with a relentless fixation on death, torture, violence, and
Satanism.
Megadeth used to bill themselves as the world's fastest speed metal band, which
was never true, but they fit more easily into the speed metal segment of the
market.
FWIW, even though C_to_E is very good, it doesn't even compare to Megadeth's
best work on "So Far So Good." Now THAT was a great album. I think Dave is
getting a little too involved in his political causes to concentrate on his
music.

| Kevin, the problem here is that there is a specific sub-genre of metal
that uses the term "death metal" to describe itself. It's a lot more
then just the lyrics, it's a whole sound. It is extremely heavy (much
moreso then Megadeth, especially on their latest), the vocals are
heavily distorted (the "draino" sound), and the lyrics have consistant
themes of satanism, gore, and death (in extremely graphic terms).
I'm with Ken, I'd call Megadeth "speed metal".

I SUMMON FORTH THE SENTINEL OF THE PIT TO EMBRACE THIS SANCTUARY!
SHATTER THE BOUNDS OF TIME AND DIMENSION AS WE IGNITE THE BLACK
FLAME OF SATAN, BEHOLD THE GATE IS OPEN!
ZODACARE OD ZODMERANU SHEMHAFORASH!
OH COMPANION OF THE NIGHT, LOOK FAVORABLY ON OUR SACRIFICES.
SATAN I SUMMON THEE FROM YOUR INFERNAL PLACE,
YOU WHO HAVE BEEN SAID TO HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE.
HEAR OUR CALL AS WE CRY OUT IN BLASPHEMY,
COME FORTH FROM THE VOID AND REVEAL YOURSELF TO ME.
EVIL LORD HEAR OUR CRIES
PRINCE OF HELL WE ASK YOU TO RISE
LUCIFER, I SUMMON THEE, OH BEARER OF LIGHT.
CAST THY SHADOW OVER THE EARTH ON THIS BLACKENED NIGHT.
TAKE FLIGHT ON LEATHERN WINGS AND SHOW US DESIRE,
COME FORTH OH EVIL ONE FROM THE SEARNING LAKE OF FIRE.
RISE NOW FROM THE FLAME
WE PRONOUNCE YOUR UNHOLY NAME
DELIAL AND LEVIATHAN I ALSO SUMMON THEE,
MASTERS OF THE SHADOWED WOODS AND OF THE BRIEY SEA
COME FORTHY AS WE NOW SAY ALL THE SACRED WORDS
WE YOUR FAITHFUL CHILDREN NOW WALT TO BE HEARD.

Compared to some other stuff that I wouldn't ordinarily call "music",
Megadeth is not Death Metal. Compared to a lot of the stuff that

So, having skimmed through the relatively content-free first
150 notes or so of this topic, I still have some questions:
What is Marty Friedman's background before he joined Megadeth?
How many Megadeth albums has he been on?
When did Mustaine leave Metallica?
Was he replaced by Kirk Hammett?
I really like Marty's guitar work - he's a real fret burner, but
Musty-stain's voice still bugs me.

| >What is Marty Friedman's background before he joined Megadeth?
He was "discovered" by Mike Varney of Sharpnel Records. Varney
orignally signed Marty as a solo artist, but then teamed his
up with fellow axe slayer Jason Becker, to form the group Cacophony
(see Cacophony note here in HM). Cacophony released two group
albums on Shrapnel records, and Marty and Jason both released one
solo album each before disbanding. Jason went on to join David
Lee Roth, and Marty to join Megadeth.
>How many Megadeth albums has he been on?
Two -- Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, respectively.
>When did Mustaine leave Metallica?
Forget the year, but during the recording of Kill Em All
>Was he replaced by Kirk Hammett?
Yes, Kirk came right from the band Exodus to replace Dave, who went on
to immediately form Megadeth.
>I really like Marty's guitar work - he's a real fret burner, but
>Musty-stain's voice still bugs me.

think he likes heavy metal too much. In "Needfull Things", he calls Axl Rose
an a$$hole. In "It", he makes derogatory comments about a Judas Priest/Iron
Maiden double bill at the Derry arena.
Certainly, those same comments have been made by people in this very file. ;-)
However, I just don't get the feeling that King likes HM. He does like
AC/DC, Springsteen, the Doors, and lots of other rock, though.

Hey, guess what? I was at Strawberries tonight, and I spotted
a new album on the shelf... it was...
Marty Friedman - 'Scenes'
It is brandy new, I have only listened to two songs, but it
seems cool! Nick Menza is on drums, and Brian DeVoy (or something
like that he is from Kiato?) on Keyboard....

Don't get yer hopes up Chris....
It is not heavy at all.... It is really good, but not heavy at
all.
It is more of a com'poseur' album (hehehe) I think Buck would
love it... As I do...
I am just saying you have to be prepared for the style, it is not
heavy, it is almost classical in part.

Yabbut, if you're really, really into awesome guitar playing,

Heck, I even went to see Segovia play once. Awesome. He

Well, Greg it is hard to say...... I don't think most of
it is rock, it seems really classical in parts, and very relaxing
type music.... Violins in parts, chuch bells, hard to describe.
It is an all instrumental album. A classical guitar album?!?!?!

You almost got it, although translating "A tout le monde" by "To all

"Tout le monde" is a French expression which means "Everybody".
Btw, do you know why part of this song was in French, and why the next
one on the CD is called "elysian Fields" (Champs-Elysees if I'm right ?) ?
Was it just for business (And business is good : they sold a huge
amount of Youthanasia copied here !) ?

Hi all
I'm writing this note just to say that earlier this month, I've
gone to the Megadeth Concert (Youth' Tour) of Toulon in France.
Toulon is a small town compared to Paris, Lyon, Marseille and so
on, so what Megadeth did there ? They came here to finish their European
Tour, with >only one< date in France, and the concert takes place in
Toulon !
The concert room was half opened, we were only 2500 auditors,
with sit-places, and the first part was taken by Channel 0 (unknown group
?).
This small concert (by town, and by attendees) shot down
everbody, but it was a little 'poor': its duration was less than 2 hours,
no drums solo (why ??), and the voice at the start was hidden by bad mix.
And Dave Mustaine played the guitar-hero too more time, but by
the way, he can do it...
But these guys are the best ! You must see them on stage ! You
must absolutely heard Youthanasia in live, that's tremendous !
And they said they will come back in France ! Waouh !

Gave Hidden Treasures a listen last night. It's understandable why some
of these track were not included on some of their other albums.
Namely tracks #2 - Breakpoint, 3 - Go To Hell, and #4 - Angry Again.
These are all original track that were written by Mustaine. Track #7 -
Diadems is also an original, but is pretty good.
The other songs are all cover tunes done very well.
Skip this CD, unless you're a real Megadeth freak, even then you'll be

a good tune..... let me rephrase that, it's not a good Megadeth tune.
It just doesn't do it for me.

| Actually Davey Boy Floyd, after speaking with you this morn, and now
knowing the titles....I have to disagree! Angry again is a good tune
and Go to Hell isn't that bad either. Rather funny really! "my only
friend is a goat, with 666 between his horns". HA!
Everyone has an opinion though and I'll respect that............
for now!

| Hmmm...dunno...I think I like Rust In Peace even better than
Countdown...although both are really good.

| All you all need to go out and buy Peace Sells....but who's buying?
That is the best Dave will EVER do. He is too caught up in his image
trying to be *cooler* than MetallicA that he isn't giving enough time
to his music! He hasn't put out anything worth a SH*T since So far..So
good...So WHAT! and even that album wasn't that great! Give it up
Dave you are a wash up

"Countdown to Extinction" is BY FAR the best Megadeth album
ever.

Every one except for Killing is my Business are all very good.
Hidden Treasures is ok, but not as good as the rest.
