Well, I was gonna put this in the Misc Metal Meadderings note and
save my opinions from messing up the OFFICIAL Anthrax note, but
someone deleted it!!
So, I think Anthrax/SOD are a bunch of losers! I don't see any
redeemingqualities about them...they just stink. I think as far
as that genre goes, megadeth and metallica have it over the clown
bands like SOD, Slayer, et al...

all's I know is that EVERY METAL fan of bands like Metallica,
that I have ever talked to (and I mean these people are fanatics)
seem to revere S.O.D. as the ultimate. I mahself don't know, and
WAS gonna buy a S.O.D. tape. Sooo, to save me the 8 bucks, Buck,
why don't ya tell me why they suck so bad, so I'll know better.

Well, Buck, you can still tell me why they suck.
I've got an Anthrax tape Pete, and you can't be serious about
Hetfield's voice. As for the rest of the band, that's one thing
I'd have to check closer on, but Hetfield's voice is a sh**load
better than Anthrax' singer. Although one guy in Anthrax can
really roar, I don't know who he is.

I like both bands but after trying to learn Mettalica and trying
to learn some anthrax it's clear that the music of Metallica is
much harder to play than Anthrax.Because Mettalica is more of
a knowledgeble(sp?)band as far as music goes.
Also my guitar instructor knows Anthrax and he said they were
made up of people who got kicked out of other bands becuase musically
they stink.

Oh, double standards here Mod's??? Pete can just come out and say
"They ROOL" & "They're the BEST" and that's fine without stating
the hows or whys. I thought i made myself clear in .1 why I didn't
care for them.
Re: .4
> No way. They rule. They have more energy than Metallica, they have
>more creativity then metallica, they have more talent than metallica,
>they write better lyrics than metallica, charlie is a better drummer
>than Lars is, Anthrax's singer is MUCH better than Hetfield. I could
>go on forever.
Oh please, this is SO shallow!!!!!!
I mean, So, maybe Charlie is a better drummer than Lars, but I guess
you'd first have to define what `better' is. (Better at what, time
keeping, fills, speed, solos, double bass??) Let us not forget that
`better' as a definition can be more subjective musical taste itself.
And, for the record, if we *did* define what `Better' was, and maybe
we did decide that Anthrax' singer was `better' than Hetfield, a
band (In my eyes) is the SUM of its parts and not defined by its
individual members. A forinstance: Yngwie is a technically great
guitarist, Billy Duffy has a hard time playing a blues scale cleanly,
Yngwie's drummer is flashy, The Cult's drummer is not, but DEAD
on with his timing, The Cult has songs with Grooves, Yngwie's songs
don't have grooves, they are just vehicles for his soloing. IMO,
Rising Force doesn't touch the Cult as a BAND, or AC/DC for that
matter...in fact, AC/DC is a great example....a basic band with
lousy players, but put them together and they are the best band
at what they do.
Also, I think a BAND goes beyond technical ability...how's their
stage presence? How's their marketing? Queensryche is a great
band on record, but they are dull live. I saw Anthrax and got the
same impression...a bunch a guys with lousy stage presence `going
thru the moves'. And, I didn't think their singer was great at all.
In fact, I couldn't figure out why they have that guitarist in the
band (one who stads on the right)...he was embarrassing!
There, have I made myself clear?

I also agree Metallica's music has more overall thought put into
it. It also seems to be to be a bit more `authentic', but again
that's just my opinion.

| re: JC...
hey, at least you're not one of those musicians that hates anything

As for the Anthrax/Metallica debate that's been opened here...
I like the thrash I've heard, I like it a lot, it's different,
and it has a lot of energy, but isn't s*it like most punk music
I've heard. I haven't heard MUCH thrash, but I like what I've heard.
I don't think Metallica comfortably fits in the "hardcore",
"thrash" genre. They feel no obligation to make every song
1000 mph, and they don't. I also like EVERYTHING they've done,
and I can't say that for many bands.
Maybe Anthrax fits better into the hardcore category. Maybe
that's why SOME people regard Metallica's stuff as "commercialized
pop metal" as opposed to Anthrax.
/Motorbreath...just a thought

One can't talk about Anthrax and S.O.D. as if they are one. They are
two very different entities. S.O.D. was a fun project that some friends got
together to do. Anthrax, is where Scott's and Charlie's interests as band
members lie. I felt this needed to be mentioned because some of the way
previous notes were written seemed to imply they were almost the same band.
Re .1:
A redeeming quality .... they're anti-drug.
About Joey's voice and James' voice .... I think each one is good. Just
different styles that work well with their respective music.
Re .8:
As far as I know, the only guy that was in another band previous to being
in Anthrax, was Joey. They may have been in other bands in high school but
Anthrax is the first "name" band for the rest. I can check on this to be sure.
Re .10:
Stage presence. IMO, Anthrax blows away most other metal bands on stage,
including those who use tons of effects. (The only reason I say most is
because I haven't seen "all" the other metal bands.) Bands like Metallica and
Megadeth (I'll use these bands because they are usually grouped in the same
style as Anthrax), usually only headbang, which is cool (better than posing!!),
while the guys in Anthrax are running around having a ball, which in turn,
gets the crowd into having more fun. Ever see Anthrax switch instruments and
play a cover tune like "Living After Midnite"? Not too many bands do this.
Damn, does that get the crowd going! I will always give more respect to a
band for relying on adrenalin than smoke, flashpots, and other tricks. Those
things are cool, but if you can get a crowd going without them, you're doing
something right with your stage show.
Now for some of my own thoughts ....
I like Anthrax. I like their lyrics and the thoughts and attitudes that
the lyrics bring out (especially on the "Among the Living" LP). I think their
overall musical sound is excellent. I think their energy on stage makes for
a great show. I like the idea that they don't rely on too many gimmicks to
make a good show.
I like Metallica and Megadeth (pretty much same reasons why I like Anthrax).
I like S.O.D. They were a riot!
I also like some non-speed metal.
I like hardcore.
I guess I'm a likable guy??!!
Arguing over one band being sh*tty is silly, discussing it is better.
I hope I've done that.

I don't think you can really compare the two
bands. I love them both, but their styles are so
much different. Anthrax is more of a fun band
(ie lots of mosh music), but I find Metallica to
be more talented and versatile in their song
writing. More melodic and a great deal more
theory used (at least in Puppets and Lightening).
The Garage album has to go though.
I love them both, but one can't substitute for
the other. I have different moods when I will
listen to one or the other.

representation of what the band actually does, but that was the

HM rap ??? Get real. There are a few brief moments in that song that
almost get moving and then it's back to Beastie Boy clones. They

Anthrax are totally different from Metallica musically so no

bands and anyone who thinks of them as serious metal must have their

he wanted to go buy an Anthrax tape. So I thought about it, Anthrax
vs. Drugs, Occult Literature, Xxx Xxxxx .... I guess it wasn't to
bad. So we go get the tape and listen to it on the way home, Fist
Of Steel I think was the name. I was surprised, no "I'm The Man"
crap here. I actually found myself "partially" bangin' my head
at the stoplights, and I got thinking, "Boy wouldn't the die hards
in the Official Anthrax Note love to see 'ol Scary doin' this !"
At that time I got hold of my senses, realized right from wrong,
and threw the tape along with my son out of the car. I rode around
the block and decided, the boy is young, he knows not what he does
and it is my responsibility to guide him AWAY from things that could
harm him, so I went back and picked him up. After a short explanation
of my actions, he fully understood why I acted the way I did. So
we slapped some AC/DC in the deck and went to McDonalds. Lesson
learned .........
JUST KIDDING !!! We went to Hardee's ! No really, that particular
tape WAS pretty good, seriously, and I listen to it every now and
then. My opinion of the band due to "I'm The Man" isn't very high,
that's MY OPINION but other than that what I heard kicked, and I'll

Your refering to the first album Fistful of Metal, much more
traditional than their latest Among the Living. The thing about
Anthrax is that they have just been getting harder as the years
go by. The first Anthrax album I heard was Spreading the Disease
and then F.O.M. and I was completely freaked, at first, by the
difference between the two. But after a few turns on the deck it
became one of my fav L.P.'s.
They are doing what they want to and if that's seen as selling
out and being commercial then O.K. But it was Anthrax who started
by making a joke record, just a bit of fun, now everybody's doing
it.

little of their music (just Indians and I'm the Man). I also

I've read this week end, that Anthrax next album will cover a song
called "Antisocial". It's a song from the most famous french HM
band named TRUST. Even Bernie (lead singer) will sing in the song
with Anthrax. TRUST reformed at this occasion and will open for
Iron Maiden in Paris. Anthrax even recorded a french version of
song for a only french market single. They also said they will release
another of their song called "Les sectes".

He's the Mexican "NOT" Man. I'll try to explain what it is, but
it's kinda weird. It's a little face made out of rubber that has
holes in the back where you place your fingers. By moving your
fingers around, you can make it have strange faces.
Scott got one a long time ago, thought it was funny, and adopted it
as the band's mascot. I found one at Newbury Comics up here in
Boston. It's not made by any big company, as far as I know, so
they're kinda hard to come by.

JC,
"Among the Living" definately first.
"I'm the Man" was originally only available as a single with
the backside of the single featuring Bud E. Luvbomb and Satan's
Lounge Band, which is actually Anthrax and friends having some fun.
Due to the popularity of "I'm the Man", they re-released it as an
EP. The EP has three(?) versions of the song (kinda a waste). It
has the original, a censored, and a live version plus a couple other
live tunes.
Some trivia: Does anyone know what movie helped spawn "I'm the
Man"?

But it gives folks a look at the "other side of the coin"

I've never heard Anthrax before, so it rather put-offish for me......If
they were "poking fun" at Rap, there were doing an awful job of it...they
disgraced the name of Rap.
And before you all go off on how Rap sux.....let me inform you that that is
only an opinion of a lot of HMr...and that there are others that think that
rap is great (and of course think HM sux).

Neil Turbin was the singer on FOM. Last I heard, he was starting
his own band. That was a few years ago.
I think I mentioned this before but I'm too lazy to find it.
Joey Belladonna's given name is Bellardini. I don't know if it
was originally Belladonna then Americanized to Bellardini (is it
possible to Americanize an Indian name?) or what. I believe his
parents use Bellardini. That may still be his real name and Belladonna
could be his stage name. About being an Indian, I was told he is.
Don't know what tribe.
Incidentally, the "Ian" in Scott Ian is his middle name. Rosenfeld
is his last name.

Re: Greg
"I'm the Man" had something to do with it, wearing the jams had
something to do with it, the "NOT man"..., associating with skaters
(skateboarders)..., and using the NYHC (New York Hard Core) logo...
People felt they were relying too heavily on gimmicks or "in"
things to get their music sold. This might imply the band didn't
even trust the quality of their music. Which IMO isn't true.
I'd guess the "NOT" man won't be making as many appearances on
band merchandise as he's had in the past. Also I'd bet the band
won't be wearing jams as much or at all.
Paul

126.209 | ;^( | COOKIE::G_HOUSE | Give a little | Wed Aug 22 1990 19:04 | 14 |
| I never thought of those things as gimicks, just things the band liked.
Kind of gave them their own character, which I considered rather
refreshing in this day of the "generic look" musician.
I suppose I could see how that might make some (weak minded) people not
take them seriously (if they didn't listen to the music), but it seems
to me that if they really liked those things and are not getting into
the "generic band" look and feel, that they're kind of selling out.
Personally I think that sucks... But what really sucks is that people
make them feel like they feel that they have to do that to be taken
seriously. Listen to the music, this isn't a novelty band!

The big thing they'd get hassled for was the jams. It seemed as
though whenever something was written about the band jams had to be
mentioned. I'm sure they like wearing shorts (who doesn't?!) and they
figured it was a cool idea because it was different but it kinda backfired.
"I'm the Man" helped and hurt them. Gave them a "hit" but lots of
people thought it was a silly gimmick and others who never heard them
before thought they were a Beastie Boys clone. I think it was innocent
enough. Frank, Scott and Charlie are rap fans and "I'm the Man" was
originally a B-side. A few DJ's picked up on it and it caught on. Can't
blame the band for that.
Associating with skaters is a different story. When skating started
getting popular again the band started using skates in some promo pictures
and on their t-shirts. Whether it was a coincidence or an image thing...
who knows? An interview in Thrasher magazine (skate mag) had band members
talking about the possibility of bringing a ramp on tour with them. I had
asked Scott at the start of the "ATL" tour if they brought one and he said
no. Found out later he was the only one that really skated.
Also the NYHC logo.... people in the NYHC scene felt that their
"colors" were misused 'cuz Anthrax put them on sleeves of their t-shirts
and on some other promo material. The band later removed the logo from
the shirts after catching some flack from the NYHC crowd. Again, whether
Anthrax used it for an image thing or not... who knows?
The band has always been concerned with why they haven't had the
notoriety that Metallica has seen. Maybe because of the above image
claims?... whether they're true or not would certainly affect it.
In the long run... "let the music do the talking." Hmmm.... good
idea for a song!? ;^)

To add my vote, I think it's heavier than SOE and equal to ATL.
Maybe I should give these both a listen again to be sure though.
I didn't like SOE all that much. I don't like new F&J. Same guy
produced both (Alex Perialas)... maybe that's the reason?
Re: I'm the Man
It *was* re-released... as an EP. It had three... yes three different
versions of ITM... the uncut version(real one), a censored one(for radio
and MTV), and a live one... plus three other live tunes from the ATL tour.
It worked out well for the band $$$-wise 'cuz it did very well on the
charts but it gave a lot of people a bad idea of what the band was about.
Kinda surprising it did so well on the charts... if you consider
that people paid good money for three version of one song and live
version of previously released material.

Anthrax - Persistence of Time
So what the F**k happened, eh? One minute everything was rosy in the
anthrax garden, the kids were going nutso the Bermuda shorts were loved
and the band were doing something genuinly innovative, crossing into
rap territory with I'm the Man. Next thing you know, someone's pulled
the plug on Anthrax's progress. the worm turns and everybody's going on
about how they never really liked the band anyway!
Like I say, what the F**K happened? Was it something they put in the
water? Was it something chemical, implememnted by every jealous thrash
band on the planet? Search me buddy, but there's no denying that
Anthrax were no longer deemed hot shit. The party's over. The kids
have gone away! Or have they? Well that's what Persistence Of Time is
here to find out.
Only time will tell, but if nothing else POT proves that Anthrax have
the balls. They know that they've got their backs against the wall,
but they've come out fighting with a viscious little bastard of a
record, a record that proves there's a whole lot more to Anthrax than
the constantly grinning "cheeky chappies" of yore!
POT is so dark in feel that it should have come out in a Spinal Tap
approved totally black sleeve! This is an album born out of
frustration and unwarranted kicks in the teeth. It's a gnarled finger
given to the swist of fate that dealt the band a sucker punch for no
other reason than it bleedin' felt like it!
As such, this is not an easy album to deal with. Don't expect to warm
to it on first aural assault, and don't whatever you do, listen to it
with your head in the oven. To the poseurs who dismiss Anthrax as not
moody enough for their Thrash macho ethos, this is the ultimate
payback. Most of the songs featured are over six minutes long, and
each number is solid with fearsome riffing that should strike terror
into the hearts of all wimpwire readers and a glow of delight into the
souls of all fans of intense music.
It seems to me that Gridlock is the standard bearer of the record,
staggeringly intense and built for anything but comfort around the
tightest Scott Ian and Dan Spitz rhythmic assault. Couple the music
with a lyric that directly tackles the problems of the band's
credibility and you've got a real angry winner.
And that's the name of the game for most of the album. It's fairly
obvious that Anthrax have developed and obsession for their situation,
and each song reeks of an "us against them", "strength through self
belief and insularity" mentality. Mere paranoia? I don't think so,
and it's certainly put the band's intensity factor at an all time high.
Blood, Time, Discharge. Monosyllabic and stripped to the bone, leaving
the raw lyric and music so sharp it hurts. It ain't pretty and it's
far from funny, but it's appeal it that the album feels so focused.
Even when the band stretch out the feel is still tight and taut. Intro
to Reality has a touch of AC/DC, Belly of the Beast nods at musical
mentors Maiden, but it's still quintessentially Anthrax - an boy,
they're still pissed off!
The only light moment is a cover of Joe Jackson's Got the Time that
sounds for all the world like New Model Army jamming with GBH. Odd,
but kinda neat.
All that's acking here is that one track that would reaffirm Anthrax as
one of rock's great bands. There's no I am the Law here, but then
again they don't come around every songwriting corner, do they? And
maybe they wouldn't want it anyway. First single In My World affirms
the no compromise stance as well as anything!
What do you do when the shit hits the fan? Do you lay down an die? Do
you crawl back under your stone? Or do you relase an album that
reaffirms your own existence?
"One day I'll get what's mine/Through the persistence of time"
Do you need me to spell it out for you?

| +++++ (Lethal! ...five daggers)
During the recording of this album, the guys in Anthrax would
occasionally make an appearance at the RIP offices, and from
thier mild-mannered demeanors, you would never have guessed that
they were churning out the toughest, most stripped-down,
no-nonsense thrash album of the year. Unfortunately, 'Thrax
hasn't had much competition in the last 12 months, but that
doesn't lessen their accomplishment any. In fact, considering
some of the lackluster material that has passed through our
offices of late, "Persistenace of Time" is a great blast of
fresh air.
This release throws you hefty chunks of New York-style anger
and frustration, coupled with a blend of heavy-handed power
and those ever-present catchy Anthrax choruses. While "State
of Euphoria," the group's last LP, took these elements to
an extreme that almost bordered on self-parody, on "Persistence"
the guys have decided to play it a little more straight and
serious. From the opening track, "Time," Anthrax comes
across like a solid-steel piston, hammering down with an
unrelenting energy. As usual the lyrics are often concerned
with attacking theat most vile of four-letter words: hate--
more specifically, racial hatred. THe group states its case
stronlgy in "Keep it in the Family" and "H8 Red." These
big-city boys also slice through deft illustrations of their
environment in tunes like "In My World" and "Belly of the
Beast." Their town is a tough place to live, and they pull
no punches when slamming that point home.
The lightest, and most musically revealing song on the record
is "Got the Time," which was originally recorded a decade ago
by New Waver Joe Jackson. The Anthrax version sounds like
a souped-up '60s garage number. The irony to this is that
both New Wave and metal -- two greatly divergent forms of
rock -- draw many of their influences from the same obscure,
often unsung grunge maniacs of the '60s. The truth of this
little-known fact has never been more apparent than it is
here.

It was well worth as it is for me the best of what I heard from
Anthrax, and surely one of the best heavy metal albums in 1990. It's
very heavy, the compositions are strong and they play (and sing) very
well. All the songs are fine including the hot cover of "Got the time".
This CD enters directly my favourite list.

Anthrax is simply incredible. They're the perfect mix of thrash, metal,
and complexity. Charlie Benante is a *phenomenal* drummer. His style,
endurance, speed, and creativity is fantastic. I couldn't possibly
say enough about them. When they backed up Iron Maiden, that was a
dream come true! I've seen 'em three times, once in Springfield for
Among the Living, 3rd row at the Orpheum, and the last tour. Every
time they were right on, didn't miss a beat. The guitarists are
great too. It took me some time to get used to the singer (Joey) but
eventually I began to like him.

milk (ode to billy) *the* best on the whole album!
bring the noise -a cover of chuck d's rap song...kinda stupid.
keep it in the family (live)
Startin up a Posse (my personal fave...it's like a folk song with
thrashy undertones)
protest & survive --truly Anthrax!!!
Chromatic death...you may recognize this as the old theme song to
"Headbanger's Ball"
I'm the Man '91 --obvious
parasite--old kiss tune
pipeline--another cover
sects--" "
Belly of the beast (live)
N.F.B (dallabnikufesin)--this had me rolling on the floor! It is a
spoof of all the love songs ever written! It ends with "she got hit by
a truck!"
<here's some lyrics from 'milk'
I woke up, can't wait to eat
I got my cereal, boy was I beat
Opened the fridge, and to my dismay
There was no milk, my mother will pay
I want some milk!
My coffee grows cold
I want some milk!
I should've been told
I wish I had some g*ddamn milk
My cheerios just ain't the same
I wish I had some d*ddamn milk
Too bad the milkman never came
I can't go out to the store
I'll just wait 'till mommy buys more
I'll just have wheat thins and beer
If I get sick the toilet is near
Of course the rest is repetition!~

The reason Anthrax is worried about the "bandwagon" thing is
because they've been accused of it before. I put a note in awhile
ago about this.
What are they trying to achieve? Probably nothing... they like
rap so they did a cover of a rap song as well as updating their own

I went back a few replies and noticed people talking about "Bring the
Noise" but no one seemed to mention how the recorded the song.
The lifted the original voice tracks off the Public Enemy song,
recorded their own music tracks and laid the original Public Enemy
voice tracks down on top of their music.
Basically "opposite" of what a lot of Rap groups do in their
"sampling."
The video's pretty cool, the song's great...of course, most Anthrax
stuff is pretty good.

The first, his car audio system and the secondis just an interview.

From Car Audio and Electronics: January 1992
It was one of those strange coincidences that make you
wonder about telepathy. The thrash-metal band Anthrax has just
released "Attack Of The Killer B's", so I called their publicist
to get a copy of the CD for review.
"I can't believe this!" the publicist said. "The band's
drummer, Charlie Benante, has been asking about getting his car
in your magizine. I've been meaning to go to a newsstand to get
a copy so I could get the phone number and contact you. And now
you're calling me! This is weird."
Shortly afterward, Benante sent us snapshots of the
system in his 1989 Nissan Pathfinder, which is suprisingly
low-key. This is due to the fact Benante still lives at home in
the Bronx, a part of New Your City known for its high crime rate.
"Charlie's very aware of theft," said installer Joe
Cassano. Together, Cassano and Mike Monterulo of Speedsport
Tuning in Norwalk, Connecticut installed the system in Benante's
Pathfinder.
According to the 27-year-old Benante, the design of the
system was worked out between him and the two installers. "It
was a bit of give and take," he recalled. "I mentioned some
things, then Mike came back with some things. I told him exactly
what I wanted to hear, so he told me how it could work."
Cockpit Controls:
The system starts with a Sony XTC-100 radio/CD-changer
controller. Benante said he recently upgraded to this piece
because of its removable face plate. "I had the XR-7400, and
then I switched to the 7500. I just couldn't take carrying it
around anymore," he said of the pullout unit.
Below the head unit, mounted in a blank factory panel
beneath the dash, is a Nakamichi EC-200 electronic crossover.
"We installed it there in between air-conditioner ducts; we
modified the ducts to we could slip the crossover in between
them," Cassano said. "Charlie likes to change crossover points
between different kinds of music," he added.
Just to the left of the head unit, next to Nissan's
factory foglight switch, a Nakamichi dual-amp balancer was
installed. The glass-break sensor's microphone for the security
system was also mounted in this area. Above it, the on/off
switch for a remote radar detector was installed in a dash panel
that originally held the LED for the factory security system.
In the center console, next to the emergency brake,
controls for an AudioControl ESP-3 center-channel and
spatial-image processor were mounted. The ESP-3 unit itself was
mounted underneath the back seat.
"Charlie wanted it there for ease of operation," Cassano
said of the ESP-3 controls. "While he's driving, he doesn't have
to take his hands off the wheel; he can just feel for the
knobs."
Higher Highs:
One thing that was critical to Benante was tweeter
placement. "Because Charlie plays on tour so much with loud
music", Cassano said, "he's a little light in hearing the highs
as much as he would like to. So we has to bring the highs up."
Benante agreed: "I said, 'Look, maybe I am going deaf,
but I want to be able to hear the cymbals, the high hat, the
tambourine - all the highs. I want to be able to hear it really
clear.'"
A pair of Nakamichi SP-65C 6.5-inch coaxials dropped
easily into the stock locations in the front doors. For added
high frequencies, a JBL T04 tweeter was surface-mounted just
above each Nakamichi coaxial, on the door panel itself.
"Mike hates them," Benante said of the JBL tweeters. "He
thinks they're too much, and he doesn't like the way it looks;
he doesn't like the way they stick out. They're not flush with
the doors. I wanted to hear them, and I wanted them to face me.
I don't boost the treble up that much, but I like to know that I
have the room to do it."
For a center channel, an a/d/s/ 200i plate speaker was
installed in the center of the dash. Its grille was painted to
match. Rear fill is provided by two more Nakamichi SP-65C
coaxials in the stock locations in the side panels of the cargo
area. "We took out the 6x9s that were there," Cassano explained,
"and we made small cabinets for the 65C's to produce a little
more bass."
Hidden CD Changer:
A Sony CDX-A100 CD changer was cleverly installed behind
the side panel of the cargo area, on the right side. It's
covered by a modified factory change pocket that pops out to
allow Benante to change disc magazines.
"When we took the car apart, I realized there was enough
room in there to mount equipment," Cassano explained. "So I
thought it would be neat to put the changer in there because
Charlie is very aware of getting ripped off.
"I was able to bury the changer in there and make it so
he can cover it up when it's not in use. I took apart the
factory change pocket, cut it down, and recovered it so it's now
about a third the depth it was." To change disc magazines, he
said, "you take out the pocket, put in your magazine, then put
the pocket back in to cover it up."
Piano-Shaped Box:
Since Benante listens to a lot of rap, another important
aspect of the system was the ability to produce low bass. "The
box in the back was designed by Joe," Benante said. "I told him
I wanted to hear a lot of bass."
"The way I hear things is a little different," he added.
"Playing the drums for so many years, I'm used to that top end,
but still I want to FEEL alot of low end."
The plan, Cassano said, was to build the box so that it
would not be very noticeable from outside the car and would still
allow Benante to use the cargo area to carry things like his drum
kit. Although the box he designed occupies most of the hatch
floor, it's only about 6 inches high. It contains two Nakamichi
SP-1010 10-inch subwoofers, each in its own ported enclosure,
with 4-inch ports on either side of the box.
"Charlie invited me to one of his shows, and I was able
to get some ideas for the box from all the equipment that was on
stage - all the different amplifiers and PA systems," Cassano
recalled. "One of the opening groups has a big electric piano.
By looking at that, I figured if I could fit that in the car, I
could make the box look like that piano. I even angled it down
toward the back of the truck; if you look at the box, it slopes
down on one side like the piano."
power is provided by two Nakamichi amplifiers - a PA-304
and PA-301 - and a single Sony XM-5520 amplifier. The Nakamichi
PA-304 was mounted under the driver's seat, and the PA-301 is
attached to the right rear side panel of the cargo aream next to
the tailgate.
"The 301 powers just the two subs," Cassano pointed out.
"It's in mono configuration. Bridged for those two subs, it'll
push 240 watts. The concept was to build a loud enough, clear
enough sound system, without using a lot of amplifiers." The
PA-304 drives the door and rear side-wall speakers, and the Sony
amp powers the center-channel speaker, he added.
Like the CD changer, the small Sony amp was mounted
behind the side wall of the cargo area, but on the opposide side.
"We also did some venting work to keep the amplifier cool,"
Cassano said. "Most cars already have a venting syste, through
the doors. So what we did was modify that so there's some air
flowing through there."
Elaborate Security:
A VSE Derringer/2 forms the basis for the Pathfinder's elaborate
security system. Besides the routine security measures such as
pin-switches, sensors, and flashing lights, the system also
employs attention-getting air horns and micro-switches on the
door handles.
"They're aircraft-type microswitches that are
waterproof," Cassano explained. "If anyone tries the door
handles, it'll sound the air horns until they let go."
A K40 UN-900 radar detector was also installed in the
Pathfinder. The LED indicators that provide the detector's
visual warning were incorporated into the Pathfinder's
speedometer, and the piezo buzzer for the audible warning was
mounted to the B pillar on the driver's side.
Nakamichi signal cable was used to connect the components
together, and Esoteric Audio's Street Wires power cable and
speaker wire was used elsewhere.
Always Upgrading:
According to Monterulo, Benante only recently got hooked on car
audio - but, like many of us, he's hooked for good. "At first he
really wasn't into it that much," Monterulo remembered. "Then
when he got the Pathfinder, he was like, 'I don't want to go
crazy; I just want cassette and CD.' Then he wanted subwoofers.
Then the ESP-3. He just keeps upgrading. By this time next
year, the system will probably be totally different."

Hear the Drummer Get Wicked
(Interview with Charlie Benante)
What kind of music do you listen to when you're cruising in your
Pathfinder?
There are three different styles, actually. One is a lot
of rap. Another is just hard rock, and another style, I
can't really classify it as pop, but it leans towards
that, like Madonna. I just like to feel it.
Who are some of your favorite bands?
I never take out this one CD that's been in my car since
I got the car, and that's the Beastie Boys' Paul's
Botique. It's amazing. Whenever I put it on and
someone's in the car, they can't help moving a little.
What else?
There's a couple of Depeche Mode things in there. Every
one of their records just sounds amazing. Then for the
hard rock stuff, I've been listening to this new band,
Alice In Chains. They're good. I throw on Slayer
sometimes. But I have to change the EQ on everything.
If I listen to rap, I have to lower the bass; it's too
much.
For you, how is listening in the car different from listening at
home or in the studio? What are the differences that you find,
being a professional musician?
See, that's the whole thing. I can't listen to music at
home because the phone's always ringing. I can't enjoy
it. So for me, to get out and drive and just listen, I
enjoy it. Get out on the highway, put it on, I don't
care.
When you're writing a song or recording it, do you ever think
about how it might sound in the car?
Yeah, 'cause when I had the cassette and the CD in the
car - now I don't have cassette anymore - I used to take
what we did that night [in the studio] and go out and
listen to it in the car. Then I'd come back the next day
and say, "Listen, there's not that much bass on there."
Or maybe, "There's too much bass. I don't hear the
guitars enough."
What's car audio like where you live, in the Bronx? A lot of
people cruising around at night booming?
Yeah, like the kids into disco or whatever. It's funny
how sometimes they'll pull up alongside you with their
windows down, blasting their radios, and it sounds like
sh*t. It's just weird how some people can think
something sounds so good, but then you listen to it and
it sounds so bad. They try to play it loud, but it's
just breaking up. It's all distorted and everything.
You guys did a version of Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise."
Obviously you like rap.
I like a lot of rap. I've always liked it. There;s some
rap I don't like. I like Public Enemy, of course,
because they were the first ones to come out and just
bring out the element of noise into rap. I thought that
was amazing the way they just took things.
I think it was Chuck or one of their producers who said
that when they make a record, it's sort of like a
paste-up artist; they'll take pieces from here and
pieces from there and just put it all together as one.
To me, that's how it should be done.
A lot of rap bands just take a beat. They just steal a
beat, but they don't do anything with it. They just let
it play. That's why I like Public Enemy and bands of
that nature, because they'll take just a piece and add -
make more an art out of it instead of just stealing it.
As opposed to something like Hammer's "U Can't Touch This," where
he just uses Rick James' "Super Freak" riff throughout?
It's such a blatant rip-off. Because the song was a hit
already, so people know it. So, of course, everybody's
going to say, "Oh, I like that," because it's like a new
generation that's listening to the song.
You're about to start a tour with Public Enemy. How do you think
Anthrax fans will relate to Public Enemy and vice versa?
Well, I can only tell you what I've seen. When we played
Madison Square Garden, Public Enemy came out on the
encore, and the whole place went crazy. So if that's any
indication of how it's going to be, I think it'll be fun.

Metallica's entire new album sounds different then their old stuff, I

I have a lot of respect for Anthrax, they play what they want to play

To all those who don't like Anthrax's rap stuff, I'm glad you
haven't heard their collaboration with UTFO. Anthrax has done more
than two rap songs. But big deal... rap kicks!... 'specially Public

I think in the Metallica note someone wondered who wrote Anthrax's
lyrics?... Scott does most if not all of 'em.

| Rap has a considerably small market - Thrash has a considerably small
market...smaller than other types of music, so their tours aren't as
immense, but there are a hell of alot of people out there that like it.
Anthrax and PE teamed up, not just for Bring the Noise, but to take the
music to the people, bro'. At least, that's what my mate Flav said.
BTW, they were superb together, although they should have dumped the
support and played longer sets.

Well after AtL and StD I wasn't expecting such a poorly written album.
riffs are blurred and it's more like recycled tunes than anything new.
No song except Anti-Social and Who Cares Wins stick out. Anti-Social
because of it's MTV airplay and WCW because of the controversy. The
rest of the songs are just a bunch of riffs thrown together. (Although
I must admit I liked the violin at the begining)
Listen to Madhouse then listen to Schism. see.

Re: Greg
Mtv refused to play Who Cares Wins video because "It was too

Re: Frizboob
I don't judge anything by MTV. MTV makes a song/video more
accesible to the general populace. Anti-Social went to number 7 on dial
MTV. That songs is a crankin' tune. But if the album was so good, how
come it barely broke gold? It was the first 'pop' type album they had.
I mean, sponsored tour by MTV and everything. Yet people like me refuse
to listen to the whole album because I don't think they put any effort
into it.

Here is Scott Ian of Anthrax top ten picks taken without permission
from Rolling Stone Magazine, Issue 625.
1. Public Enemy, Apocalypse 91---The Enemy Strikes Black: A PE
release is always a major even in my life because it'll basically
rule my disc and tape players until the next PE release. They
never disappoint. Since 1986 they've been my favorite group, and
*Apocalypse* is another level above all of their previous releases.
It's so immediate. "Lost at Birth" is the heaviest intro ever.
What can I say, they f(ckin' rule. I'm an unabashed fan, and
nothing else even comes close. PE in effect...boyeee!!!
2. Alice in Chains, Facelift: Simplicity at its heaviest. 'Nuff
said.
3. Andrew "Dice" Clay, Dice Rules: The album title says it all.
I can see all of you Dice bashers sitting in your closets late
at night with headphones on, laughing.
4. Madonna, The Immaculate Collection: Our sound man, George, who
hates Madonna, loved this record. I already love Madonna, so my
feelings about the record are, are, are...words cannot describe.
5. Fishbone, The Reality of My Surroundings: This record was not
as immediately appealing to me as *Truth and Soul*. I actually
didn't listen to this album for about three months, but I
always found myself humming bits and pieces until I finally played
the record again, and man, now I can't stop.
6. Urban Dance Squad, Mental Relapse: The Dancetaria version of
"Fastlane" really, really makes me move.
7. James Brown, Star Time: Some things never get old. This
collection is missing one song; where's "The Grunt"?!
8. "Diane, the Twin Peaks Tapes of Agent Cooper," Soundtrack From
Twin Peaks: It's mandatory to drink a lot of coffee while
listening to this as long as it hasn't been anywhere near fish.
9. Slayer, Decade of Aggression: The best live album since Kiss
Alive.
10. Anthrax, Attack of the Killer B's: Normally, I wouldn't put
one of our own records, but "Bring the Noise" was one of my
best - if not *the* best - times I've had being in Anthrax.

I saw the new Anthrax vid with Testament's singer (Chuck Billy?) on

Has anyone else heard that Chuck Billy would be Anthrax's new singer?

To his credit, there's a song off their new album that's been getting

(Great song too)
As for Anthrax. They're a bunch of hypocrites. They have a ballad on
the new album. I was reading their RIP interview from when Attack came
out and they said that heavy metal bands that put out ballads aren't
"expanding" but are seling out. Yet, I have a recent magazine from this
month that says the song "only" is Anthrax "expanding" their horizons.
