Am3dex.lzh is an lharced file Containing the Demos from AMOS 3D.
They have been compiled with the Amos Compiler, and don't require Amos to run.
After extraction you should be able to start the demo's by double clicking
 on their respective Icons.
To end a demo and get back to workbench use <ctrl> C.
I like Galaxy Thruster the best.

5001.9Library for XSpecs 3D glassesMR4DEC::GAYUnderground living can be Hobbit formingThu Sep 19 1991 13:1719
This is a library of basic 3D plotting routines to use with the
Haitex X-Specs 3D glasses. (LCD glasses that plug into the 2nd joystick
port on an Amiga and, with the right software, alternately block the
left and right eye while the software presents the right and left
    views, giving true 3D).

The library handles all the buffer switching and driving of the glasses.
It has routines for plotting lines, points, sprites, and text. The
routines take x,y,z coordinates and display them as left and right views.

    xspecs.hzh Robert Schader's archive containing Richard Horne's
XSpecs library and Robert's Manx C interface to it.
xspecssas.lzh	My modifications of Robert's routines so they are
callable from SAS (Lattice) C, plus an attempt to
document the routines with such info as I could
"reverse engineer" from the various files. This
archive only contains the files I modifed, you also
    			need th library from xspecs.lzh

According to the manual, "Can't load 3D Code" is an error refering to
    the main 3D code file.
It's located in the AMOS_System Directory on my hard drive.
When the Amos Compiler compiles the program, it checks the Amos.env
(Amos enviroment) file to see what files it needs to include.
Unfortunately I didn't declare this in my Amos.env.
I'll fix the files and upload it again.

    EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD].
It's a bit bigger than the others, but contains all the files
    nessacary to run the demos.
After un lharcing it to a disk. Install the disk and reboot the
    system.
This should allow you to run the demo's.
Thier is a readme file in the archive that explains in more detail,

CDT -- Change Default Tool
Author: Todd M. Lewis

One of the pieces of information Project icons contain is the
Default Tool--the full name (including the volume and path) of
the program to run when the user double-clicks an icon. For
several reasons the user may need to change the Default Tool of a
Project icon. Examples include whenever the Volume Name of the
program's disk is changed, whenever the program is moved to
another drawer or to another disk, and whenever the user wants to
run a different program when the Project icon is double-clicked.

The Amiga Workbench provides a way (the Info menu selection) to
change the Default Tool of icons, but you have to change them one
icon at a time. If you have a disk with lots of Projects and
their Default Tools all need to be changed, then your are going
to get tired of the Info requester pretty fast.

CDT is a utility for changing the Default Tools of groups of
Project icons. It will change any icons in a drawer you select
whose Default Tools match the pattern that you specify. An
option makes it work in drawers contained within the drawer you
select. (So you could do a whole disk at once.) It also includes
a test mode in which it only tells you what icons it would have
changed without actually changing any. It can be run from either
the Workbench or the CLI.

The CDT window contains an area where informational messages are
displayed to you (so you know what it's doing) and three string
gadgets labeled "Where", "Old Tool", and "New Tool".

Use the "Where" string to specify the drawer you want to work in.
Possible values would be "DF1:", "RAM:", or "MyDisk:Pictures".

Specify a string-match pattern in the "Old Tool" string gadget.
Only Project icons whose current Default Tool matches the pattern
will be modified. The AmigaDOS manual explains patterns in the
section on the LIST command. Note that the character "/" has no
special meaning when matching strings, so the pattern "#?pgm"
will match "df0:Temp/Pgm" as well as "df0:Pgm".

Fill in the "New Tool" string gadget with the text string you
want as the new Default Tool.

When all that is done you can set your options in the menu. The
menu contains five entries: About, All Drawers, Test, Start, and
Quit.

About (<right amiga>-A or <help>) gives a synopsis of CDT.

All Drawers, when checked, makes CDT examine all drawers
contained within the "Where" drawer in addition to the "Where"
drawer itself. When not checked, only the Project icons in the
"Where" drawer are examined.

Test turns test mode on and off. When on, no Project icons are
modified. Instead, you will be told which icons would have been
changed if test mode had been off.

Start actually starts the whole process. You can stop it at any
time by selecting the "Stop" gadget which appears over the string
gadget labels.

Quit (and the window's close gadget) terminate CDT.

NOTE: The changes to a Project icon's Default Tool will not
take effect until its drawer's window is opened. If an icon's
drawer window is already open when you run CDT, you must close
the window and re-open it for the changes to take effect.

This is the Demo version of Lotus Turbo Esprit Challenge 2.
The demo contains three track's; Forest, Fog & Night.
The only negative point is that you are only allowed approx 30 secs of driving
before you run out of time. You then have to reboot the disk to look at another
track.
The demo has the best/smoothest scrolling I have seen in a driving game so far
and look's very promising, the fog section is very realistic !!
The completed game is due out soon from Gremlin Graphics.

That's possible, I grabbed the most recent version on ab20 when the dpaint
demo version started circulating.

I'm also running an A3000 with 2.04. That might have something to do with
it.

Does the latest version still not extract into a directory? Does it still
not have any way of exiting if you change your mind after starting it? Those
were the most braindamaged things about it (the silly command interface
didn't help much, either, but I don't expect that to be fixed).

I'd still like to see the archives in some more palatable format.

    RE .36

The whole idea of DMS is that it duplicates the original disk. Because
of this, it can't extract into a directory. The dms archive may be
of a disk that DOS doesn't like very much! In fact some of those
disks I uploaded are just like that.

The Silly Command Interface is what you get when you just use the PD
version. If you register, you can get the menu driven version which
    is really nice.

If someone else wants to upload the disks in a different format, it
would probably have to be zoom or lhwarp. I don't think either of
these allow you to extract into a directory too, do they ? Certainly
Zoom doesn't. Don't know about Lhwarp.

I know DMS does entire disks. That doesn't mean that all dms archives have
custom bootblocks or custom file systems. If they do, it means they expect
me to reboot my workstation. There isn't a piece of software in the world
that good.

Any command interface that requires I grab the mouse is worse than silly.
You're welcome to like them and use them; just don't ask me to.

I don't know whether lhwarp or zoom let you write to directories. I don't
use them. I believe that lhwarp creates standard .lzh files, which lharc
will extract onto a hard disk, but I'm not sure.

Eurodemos are demos written predominantly by European coding groups.
They're constantly pushing the machine to do better and neater things,
each group trying to outdo all the others. It's got to the point
now where the artwork is professional quality and the coding is
superb. I believe that a high proportion of the coders go on to write
commercial games. That's certainly what has happened with the Lost
Boys on the ST and I think that Thalion Software is completely staffed
    by ex-demo writers.

They'll all be in DMS format.

5001.53The coding is superb???TENAYA::MWMTue Oct 08 1991 15:4419
The last time I looked at any of them, the majority either crashed or failed
to do anything interesting. Probably something to do with trying to run them
on anything other than an A500 running 1.3 with no fast mem (no, I don't
know that that's the only thing they run on). They are a fair chunk of the
reason I don't bother with things that want me to reboot my machine.

The impression I get from others is about the same - they may be really
spiffy demos, but they break a lot of rules and wind up failing on a lot of
hardware.

That doesn't bode well for the code being superb. That you usually can't
look at it at all doesn't bode well either.

I found the comment in the "education" note on these people doing the
next generation of serious software somewhat frightening because of this.
That could make shopping for the Amiga as painfull as shopping for an IBM
PC.

I have to second that. When I use the machine I have a considerable
number of things running which I wouldn't normally want to shut down
to look at a demo. I don't think I'd mind a demo taking over the machine
for a while if it gave it back the same as it left it.

The people writing these may be very smart hackers and certainly show
the "potential" for the ability to program and understand computer
hardware at a young age, but I don't think they are really
demonstrating any knowledge of software engineering principles.

Besides, look what they have to work with in Ami. Give them a TRS80
with 4K of memory and then see what they can do! Now there's a system
to learn on the hard way :-).

RE: .53 & .54 Jeez! What a couple of grumpy wet blankets.

I know that people pushing the Amiga want programs to use the best
possible coding standards but...

[soapbox...]

These are teenagers who are producing amazing things with the tools and
training they have. Let them learn about good coding practices in college
or at a professional job the same way you learned them. I suppose you never
squeeled the tires on a car or drank too much because those aren't good
car or people "principles".

As for taking over the machine or not running on every platform: Do you
refuse to play ball if the rules aren't the same as pro rules? If you
don't have 9 people on each team do you go home?

Do you not eat off of plates because they just get dirty and then you
have to wash them? Do you not buy flowers because they just die anyway?
"Don't buy those flowers! Wait until they perfect those things so they
won't die!"

The Amiga is a fun machine for creative people. Creative people don't
follow the rules. They break them. People will tell them they
shouldn't do that, but the truly great ones go on to integrate the new
rules into a structure that everyone can access. That is greatness.
The truly mediocre ones will agree that they should follow the rules
and merge with the masses.

Hopefully those teenagers _will_ improve their engineering skills
and won't be satisfied just hacking demos. That potential shouldn't
be wasted.

Their creativity is fantastic, but breaking the multi-tasking rules
that CBM has tried to establish, puts a powerful machine back into
the realm of Nintendo.

Showing a non Amiga user a demo/game/app that requires a reboot is less
than impressive.

"I thought this computer could multi-task?"
"Well, normally it does - but these people broke the rules."
"So how many demos break the rules?"
"Most of the good ones."
"Oh."

I'm all for breaking/bending rules that don't make sense or aren't
valuable. Sharing resources and cooperating with other tasks IS a
very good rule. Those hackers should devote their time to operating
within that scope - and still producing great work. Think of it as
an extra challenge, and don't take the easy way out when coding.

I absolutely *love* these demos. These folks get this machine to things
that are simply amazing. I'm sure many of these things would be
impossible with the additional baggage and rules imposed by an OS.
These guys have their own disk structure (and pack an amazing amount
of stuff on them) and write their own drivers or 'loaders' as they call
them. They often write code that 'runs on the metal'. Breaking the
rules in new and creative ways is what, IMHO, entices these folks to do
these crazy but wonderful things in the first place.

Great and clever ways to scroll text, some truly outstanding original
music scores, remarkable graphics and animations are all things that
    make these appealing to me.

For me the best part is... what will it do when I boot it and then when
I press the LMB. It's always a surprise and I frequently find myself
staring at the screen, volume cranked up and mouth hung open in
    amazement.

I don't have to do anything but enjoy (mind candy is the perfect
description). Besides, we may not like it but we all reboot once and a
while to play a great game that 'doesn't follow the rules'.

    Keep 'em coming... it's appreciated.

    RE .last few

.58 (Bruce) has it about right, I feel.

Many of the effects in these demos require very precise timing and
sharing the machine with any other processes would make it impossible.
By the very nature of some of the demos, they can't multitask.

Many of the demos use their own disk format and compression routines
and they can achieve incredible performance by doing this. This is
all part of the demo, in a way, only it's less appreciated by the
viewer but it's yet another gauntlet thrown down to other coders.

I believe the majority of the coders are in their teens but I know
of some who work in the computer industry as programmers and many
who are at various universities studying computer science or
mathematics to various levels. The reason they don't give out their
code is not because it's not structures but because it's a trade
secret. I have various source code listing from demos and I can
fairly say that it varies greatly. Some is really poor but some of
the source is well commented and structured. Of course, because of
the nature of the routines, much code is written to work as fast as
possible and because of the timings required you can often see zillions
of no-op commands throughout the code but that's a necessary feature
of what is being done. I challenge any of you to write code that,
for example, spins a globe with a map of the world on it, inside a
light shaded, 3d skeletal cube, as can be seen in the Alpha Omega demo,
that is as good as seen in the demo, and for which the code is
well structured, doesn't break any rules and is multi-tasking. It's
easy to criticise until you've tried it yourself.

I've had little experience of coding the Amiga but I used to code demos
on the Atari ST. Nothing fantastic; just the usual sine scrolls, star
fields, colour effects etc. But even on that machine, some of the
effect were hard to achieve without doing some dirty stuff. There
was one effect called "Hardware" or "DMA" scrolling which (if I
remember correctly) would allow full screen scrolling effects to
a degree that was previously thought to be impossible on the Atari ST.
Anyone who's seen the Lost Boys' MindBomb demo can vouch for the
effectiveness of this. That's dirty programming but it can't be
    done any other way.

It might be dirty, but it's still very clever coding.

That's what these demos are all about.

Anyway, enough spew! I hope to get a couple more demos to put into
EOT today. Hopefully "Mars Flight" which is meant to be particularly
    stunning. I'll let you know.

    Cheers,

DMS is PD. The latest version has no bugs that I know of.

You can find DMS in :

    EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]DMS-1_03.LZH

It's not complicated. To unpack an archive you simply type :

    DMS WRITE DF0:archive.dms to DF1:

    or similar.

It's simply a disk packer. It packs a disk into a single file. You can
specify the degree of compression performed etc.

Why ? Why not ! It's the best disk packer I've come across. I've
admittedly only used 3; Zoom, Lhwarp and DMS but of these three
    I prefer DMS.

    hope that helps !

Well not to be a total scrooge, but there is also the issue of
viruses on these demos. Most of them have custom boot blocks
and some even their own "filesystem". It's very difficult or
impossible to tell if there is a virus there under these circumstances.
If you boot something like this and you have hard drives you are
taking your chances that they might get infected...

Admittedly anything someone posts here is probably OK, but I'd

I can't dispute that. But then every new disk you get *could* contain

5001.68"Breaking the rules...."TENAYA::MWMWed Oct 09 1991 16:3535
It seems that my comments about not wanting to reboot my machine got
intermingled with the comments about the demos breaking the rules (in
a different *note*), to create the impression that I meant that not
multitasking properly is "breaking the rules". That wasn't my
intention at all.

There are two ways to look at the Amiga:

1) It's a low-end workstation. In that context, "breaking the rules" means
all the things that break multitasking, or cause unacceptable system load.

2) It's a game machine. In that context, "breaking the rules" means relying
on hardware behavior that CBM hasn't specified as "written in stone".

I meant "breaking the rules" in the second context, not the first. I can
believe that many of the things the demos do require having complete control
of the machine. I'm not quite willing to believe that they require doing things
that aren't going to work on anything CBM says is an Amiga (and even some
of the things CBM says *isn't* an Amiga).

The catch with #2 is that it's *hard* to get things that will work right
on all Amigas without using the OS. In a recent BIX discussion, Mike Sinz
(author of WaitBlit) pointed out that there were four different versions
of the blitter around, each of which had it's own quirks. Creating a
WaitBlit that works on your machine and is faster than the OS call is easy.
Creating one that works on *all* Amigas is hard.

Finally, I believe that most people overestimate what you have to throw away
the OS to get away with. Remember, there are OS-approved ways of grabbing most
(if not all) of the Amiga hardware. The tricky part is keeping the OS alive
while it has no contact with the outside world.

Creative programmers break rules, but talented ones create code that works.

	<mike
5001.69fashion; facisim...its all the same to me!SDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNWed Oct 09 1991 18:1524
And talented, professional, creative programmers, are few and far
between...but they do da*n good code!

Along the lines of having to break rules to be creative...I'm reminded
of the guy who had to try drowning to see if it would kill him; or of
the person, who following their EST session, just knew that gravity was
a state of mind and for four stories actually convienced himself that
he was flying; or the hightened awareness achieved via the PCP user
that told him he had created a NEW reality where he could stop busses
on the freeway (this was when busses actually reached speeds in excess
of 35 mph which accounts on why the buss driver couldn't stop in time).

Are these extremes? Sure! One can carry anything to extremes.
Including art for the sake of art. Demos which take over the machine
are quite often just that, art for the sake of art. They rarely have a
coding segment which would be useful in a program which had to survive
in a politically correct machine sociological environment (great! huh?)
    of a multi-tasking, multi-user operating system.

So if you like that kind of art (fairly useless to me) then knock
yourself out. If not, then hey! That's why they make chocolate AND
    vanilla!

5001.70Love them demos! AMIGA::RIESOS/2 = Half an Operating SystemWed Oct 09 1991 20:0055
I am another who *LOVES* these demos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't bother me one bit that I have to reboot my machine after running
some of them (I have seen some that do let you exit back to the O/S). When
you run one of these demos, its to be entertained, like running a great game.
I have no desire to run one while I'm downloading a file, or doing a compile
or something. When I run them, I an turning on my machine to "run demos".
I have had more fun running these demos than doing anything else with my
machine. I am continually amazed at what these folks are able to do with
the machine.

Most of these coders are pre-college age, and are producing these demos
on bare bones stock A500's. I doubt if most even have hard disks. To
them, every byte of ram and disk space is precious. They are milking
every cycle out of the machine! They are NOT writing commercial software,
they are NOT charging money for this stuff. They don't have to follow the
rules! What they are attempting to do, is to take the AMIGA where no
AMIGA has been before :-). They are being extremely creative, and what
is wrong with that?

I believe that most of the compatibility problems are due to the fact
that these folks don't have all the lastest hardware widgits, CPU
accelerators etc that are out there and are probably even unaware that
what they are doing will not always work with these other devices.

Most of the very best games for the AMIGA make you boot from the disk,
or at least make you reboot after running the game. They don't multi-task!
Does this bother me? No, cause when I play these games, I'm not doing
anything else but playing the game. (Although I do hate copy protection!)

I have played with LOTS of these euro-demos, and I have found that the
single most compatibility problems are 1, requires 68000 because all
timing is based on how long it takes the 68000 to perform various
functions, and 2, PAL.

Most acceleratorsboards let you boot from the 68000, so this is not
a problem (unless you have an A3000). Also, if you have a fatter Agnus
you can set it to PAL mode. I went one step further, and added a switch
so that I can hard select NTSC or PAL modes. This was the best thing
I ever did to my AMIGA. I urge anyone with a fatter Agnus to do this.
Even if you don't want to run PAL software, it gives you another 100
lines of vertical resolution. And you don't need a special multi-synch
monitor. Any RGB monitor should work fine. Also, its the next best thing
to a flicker fixer! Adding another 100 lines to your display, brings the
scan lines closer together, and makes the display much sharper. You do
get some flicker due to the lower refresh rate, but not nearly as bad as
running in interlace mode. Try it out, there are programs out there that
will switch your fatter agnus to PAL mode. I added the switch because
I wanted to be able to boot in PAL mode (for booting DEMOS!!!).

If you boot on the 68000 and in PAL mode, nearly every demo I have
ever tried runs fine. Some will run on the 68030 (not many), but most

For Bars&Pipes Professional owners:

			MIDI Time Code Accessory

In response to the difficulties that some people have been encountering
with Bars&Pipes Professional's MIDI Time Code synchronization, we've
written an Accessory that behaves much more reliably and comes with
a few extra capabilities. Called MTC, it plugs into existing copies
of Bars&Pipes Professional, requiring no update of the program itself.
It does, however, require an update of the MIDI In Tool, which we've
also included.

Both the MTC Accessory and new MIDI In Tool are freely distributable,
as long as you include this ReadMe file.

What they are attempting to do, is to take the AMIGA where no
	AMIGA has been before :-).

And they are learning habits that will prevent it from going much farther
than it's already gone.

Mike, first, I wasn't using your note specifically when I wrote about
what I thought regarding demos "breaking" the rules. In fact it was
.56 that was more outspoken about this.

I'm not really sure how what they are doing relates to bad habits when
you consider the nature of what they do.

These guys are not going to end up writing business software; the
really good ones are going to be snapped up by games software houses to
write fast code. Do you think that games like Hunter or Starglider 2
stick to all the rules ? These games really push the Amiga or at least
did when they were released. Hunter is truly incredible. To me it's
like an extension of a filled vector demo!

I guess it all depends on what you want from your Amiga. If it's used
as a serious business machine then stuff that has to run alone would
irritate you more than if you use your machine for playing games etc.
But I don't think that the coding is at fault. What they are learning
is not so much a set of bad habits as a set of skills that, in a
    particular market, are very desirable.

Actually, not all commercial software obeys all the rules. Some of them have
very good reasons for abusing the hardware or software (needing to do
something that wasn't possible). However, once you've got something that
works, what are the chances you're going to stop using it even if the software
is no longer appropriate?

The trouble with *any* of this is that when the software breaks, it's usually
the Amiga that takes the rap, not the software. I've had at least one
dealer tell me they were really unhappy with the 3000, as it had no
fallback mode for broken software. And how many people have you seen scream
about CBM not shipping AmigaBASIC with 2.0, wondering what CBM thought they
were doing (AmigaBASIC stores tag bits in the high-order byte of a pointer;
it breaks on the 3000).

I'm not saying that EuroDemos (per se) are bad, or that you shouldn't watch
them, or that you have to treat your Amiga like a workstation (that would
be pretty silly - after all, it is yours). I am saying that the coding
doesn't even make it to mediocre if it won't run on a 3000 with 2.03
(2.04 rescues a lot of software that 2.03 doesn't - one of the reasons
2.04 is so late), and that the Amiga community would be better off if all
game/demo software that didn't follow the hardware rules vanished. Of course,
I want the Amiga of the future to be as good a workstation as it can
possibly be, without being fettered by what game/demo programmers want
to make it do. If you're using it as a superdupernintendo, then what you
want from the Amiga of the future may be different.

PasTeX is a freely redistributable version of Knuth's TeX document
    markup language/processor. I belive PasTeX V1.3 is TeX V3.1 or V3.2.
I haven't looked at the contents yet but the disks unpacked correctly.

The bad news is that they were packed by YADE (Yet Another Disk
Encoded) called ZOOM. ZOOM unpacks each ZOM file to a floppy disk (an
inconvience for hard drive users). Anyway, ZOOM V4.2 is at:

    	EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]ZOOM42.LZH

Lastly, the file FIG.ZOM is some sort of figure making program. I
don't know anything about it but it was with the rest of the archives.
PasTeX is a great program but is memory hungry so low-memory users
    don't get your hopes up.

    Enjoy,
    George

Ps: I'm more or less with Mike on the on-going EuroDemo debate and
he'll be happy to know PasTeX doesn't require a reboot and multitasks
nicely. If anyone wants to buy me an A3000 I'll inform the net as to
if PasTeX works on it or not. :-) -Gaw

This is a pretty neat package...say goodbye interchange!

This is a DEMO (no-save) version of Axiom Software's new Pixel 3D 2.0.

The back of the box says:

Pixel 3D is the most powerful 3D object utility for the Amiga computer.
Complicated 3D objects can be difficult to create from scratch unless you
put the power of Pixel 3D to work for you. Use Pixel 3D to convert a
bitmap IFF picture into a 3D object by extruding it (giving it depth).
Pixel 3D offers several extrusion options that give you the power
to make 3D objects quickly, easily and accurately. Pixel 3D is a great
tool for making a 3D object of letters or a company logo.
Running out of memory? Use Pixel 3D's Data Reduction Algorithms to
reduce the size of 3D object files by eliminating redundant points
and polys. Use Pixel 3D to easily convert 3D objects from one
format to another.

Pixel 3D can:

Load and save the following 3D object formats (this demo does not save):
Lightwave 3D, Imagine, 3D Pro, Sculpt, Turbo Silver, VideoScape 3D and
DXF AutoCAD.
Convert bitmaps to 3D objects with extrusion, beveling, color
defined extrusions, spin about an axis and choice of line straightening
algorithms.
Object viewer with wire, solid, shaded, and color viewing modes. Use the
mouse to conveniently change the viewing angle.
Data reduction algorithms. Make your object more efficient by
eliminating unneeded points and polygons.
Pixel 3D is a trademark of Axiom Software. Pixel 3D 2.0 is now
available. See your Amiga software dealer.

    This is an updated version.

                                 What it is?

What is LAZi? LAZi is a graphic interface for the archive utilities
Lharc, Arc, and Zoo. You supply the archive utilities. LAZi will add,
delete, extract, and update single or multiple files; allow you to
read extracted readmes/docs or any other ascii file; save a
configuration file that holds the locations of your work directory(s),
archive utilities, and icon position. Yes, it will iconify and, when
re-iconified(?), stay where you last placed it! If you have no
experience using Lharc, Arc, or Zoo I suggest you read their
documentation before using LAZi. LAZi was created using CanDo v1.5.
Updated from version 0.94 to 0.98. see Changes.DOC for changes

5001.88Play animations from hard diskKALI::PLOUFFDevoted to his LawnWed Oct 23 1991 14:4537
BuildAnim.lzh contains two utilities, BuildAnim and BigAnim, by
Christer Sundin. BigAnim works great displaying the 6 MB Planetside
demo animation (Lemmings CDTV disc) on my 3 MB Amiga. Here are some
    excerpts from the readme file.

    Wes
    ------------

BigAnim plays animations by loading a frame, decompressing and
displaying it, loading next, and so on. That means it'll only need
space for two screens (double buffering) and a load buffer. For 32
colors, 320x200, this will be about 100 K, depending on the size of the
    DLTA chunks in the animation.

BigAnim uses a normal intuition screen to display the pictures, so you
can drag it around all you like, put it in the background or whatever.
It will play the animation in a loop, and you quit it by pressing ESC
or the right mouse button, pressing the left mouse button pauses the
    animation.

BuildAnim builds animations by keeping three pictures in memory,
computing and saving the DLTA chunk, loading next picture and so on.
This will take about 150 K of memory for 32 colors, 320x200 pixels.

Usage: "BuildAnim infile outfile", where infile is the name of the
first picture in a sequence of pictures named NameNNN, for example
Pic001 or Frame042. This means you can begin at any number you like. It
continues to load pictures by increasing the number at the end of the
filename, until a file can't be found. Naturally, all the pictures must
have the same size and no. of colors.

IMPORTANT: Since the last two frames in an animation has to be the same
as the first two, you must create two additional pictures by copying
the first two. Example: You have the pictures Pic001 to Pic050. Then
you must copy Pic001 to Pic051 and Pic002 to Pic052.

Ahhh, rathole! The Planetside "demo" does not actually RUN on any
Amiga. The driver on the CD-ROM appears to use CDTV features - it
crashes the Amiga. As for playing the animation on a 2 meg, or even
smaller machine, it certainly should work with BigAnim. If you go back
and read the readme file, you'll see that BigAnim only buffers a few
frames at a time, and relies on frequent updates from disk. The whole
point of BigAnim is to be able to run animations larger than available
    RAM.

At last! I finally figured out how to get some of the great demos to
work. As I said back in .100, I was able to unpack these DMS gems
without errors, but AmigaDos returned "checksum 880" errors and refused
to boot as a result. So.... I read the docs and found something called
"noval". The docs say that "noval" stops DMS from inhibiting the disk
validator when writing a disk. By typing the following, I was able to
load Bartman.dms and Quartz.dms for the 1st time:

DMS Write file.dms to df1: Noval

This appears to take care of those non-standard boot blocks. If the
file has a standard boot block, you won't need to use this.

    BTW......The Quartz demo was fantastic!

    John

Actually Microsoft and Asymetrics won the competition. Not because our (MS)
platform was technologically superior but because the
presentation was the best, it allowed the user to explore the topic
selected (global warming, I think) better than either the C= entry or
the Mac entry. It's a classic case of quality-vs-quantity. C= could have
won if their multimedia presentation had been better in the ease of use and
information arena.

AUUCP2.ZOO;1
AUUCP3.ZOO;1

AUUCP.TXT ---
[ This is version 1.15D of Dillon's UUCP system, discussed in newsgroups
  alt.sys.amiga.uucp and alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches.

Basically, this software allows you to hook an Amiga to the UUCP network,
giving you the ability to transfer files, mail, and news with a UUCP
neighbor. It also includes a *lot* of other software that may be useful
  it its own right.

There are several organizations that will sell UUCP connections, or you
may be lucky enough to find a site willing to give you a connection for free.

The distribution is divided into three "disks".

DOSREAD.TXT ---- Read AmigaDOS disks under Amiga Unix.
DOSREAD is at Version 1.4; and DOSLS is Version 1.2.

I've included both DOSLS and DOSREAD in this package, although DOSLS
has only changed in its' error message output since the last time that
I posted it in comp.unix.amiga; DOSREAD has changed more substantially:
it wouldn't read more than the first file header block so only files up
to 36K in length could be copied! This was found and fixed quickly. :-)
The files are simple uuencoded binaries (source will not be distributed).

Please feel free to send any bug reports; enhancements are not likely since
anything major will be left for the filesystem implementation. This code
carries around a lot of baggage because it runs in user-space and I'm
looking forward to a kernel-mode version.

LOGIN.TXT ---- ?possibly useable for new login?

This is an updated version of login.c posted to comp.sources.misc in the
spring of 1991. It can be used as a /bin/login and /etc/netlogin
replacement for Interactive Unix. For ATT&T SysV/386 with Wollongong
TCP/IP, it may be used to replace /bin/login only (not /usr/etc/netlogin).

A form of "user access security" is supported. If file /etc/usrtime
exits, it is processed to restrict the tty line, day of week, and time of
user access. Additional options allow all users, uucp, slip users and
interactive users to be controlled on a global basis. The format of this
file is:

      <user>:<enable>:<tty>:<weekday>:<time>:<comment>

for example:

      SLIP:LOGIN:ttyi1a:::::
      ajf:LOGIN:tty??,tty???:Mon,Tue:0800-1700:Temp employee

NEW FEATURES for v2.0

   1. can work as /etc/netlogin with Interactive Unix.
   2. support for /etc/nologin
   3. slip login control
   4. "!" operator in /etc/usrtime (Uwe Doering, gemini@geminix.in-berlin.de)
   5. general cleanup and bug fix.

                              by Joe Rumsey

Sick of solid backrounds and tiny little patterns on your workbench? Now
under Workbench/Intuition 2.0, any image you can view on your Amiga can become
the backdrop for your Workbench window.

Wallpaper allows you to place an iff image in the background of the
Workbench window. The image may contain up to 16 colors. Pictures with more
colors than the current Workbench can display are accepted, but no attempt is
made to adjust the colors.

Important note: Make sure that the main workbench window is the ONLY workbench
window open when you run wallp. That is, no disk or drawer windows should be
open, but other windows on the workbench screen are ok. Disk and drawer
windows will sometimes confuse wallp into using them for it's picture.

Usage: Wallp [-options] [filename]

5001.124Amoner Project on EOTSHARE::DOYLEFri Dec 06 1991 11:3920
I ftp'd the Amoner Disks issues 1 and 2, uudecoded them, and successfully
unpacked them at home with Disk Masher.
So I've uploaded them to EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD] as Amoner1.dms and Amoner2.dms.
I'm not shure if you'd have to cvtarc arc them, but I believe you'll have
to use the /Stream_lf parameter from NFT. If running pathworks, just Copy em.
   Worked for me.

The Amoner Project is a Amos Users PD disk that is distributed electronically
 over Usenet/Bitnet.
It's in a disk magazine format.
However, you don't need Amos to run them, simply boot from the disks.
If you have a 1 meg Agnus it'll reboot into pal mode, if you wish to seen it
in NTSC mode, you'll have to modify the disks start-up sequence,(see the
documentation on the disk after Unpacking).

If you have Amos, the programs provide usefull examples on coding in Amos.
If you don't, you still might find them entertaining and useful.

Here are a few commands that did not make it into 2.04; however, I've
gotten the go-ahead to distribute them in this fashion; It's possible
that future versions of the OS will contain updates of these commands.
It's also possible that it won't.

These commands are designed for 2.04. It is possible that future
revisions of the OS will require future revisions of these commands.
(This is why I consider them hacks)

Anyway, I've been using them for about a year; now that everyone
can get 2.04 (and now that I've cleaned the commands up) its time to give you
the opportunity too.

Any bugs you find should be reported directly to me, as well as to Commodore,
for they should not be currently considered Commodore supported. I will
probably fix the bugs I hear about, though.

The first four are various 2.04 tools.
The new Xoper works fine here on my A500 & OS 1.3, but get's confused
on my A2500/20 & OS 2.04.
The XPR-ZSpeed.library is based on the normal XPR-Zmodem.library
(it reads it's defaults from ENV:xprzspeed), but seems faster and works
better with VLT.

Which archives give you trouble?
Anyhow, I use Lharc 1.3, LZ 1.92 and LHA 1.00 (I'll register these days),
depending on wether I want safety or speed. ;-)
LZ 1.92 handles the .lha archives (lh-5 compression) and so does LHA.
Both have some bugs, were LHA (being half-commercial) is faster and
promises to be corrected sooner.

I've gotten Amoner 3 (PD Amos Disk Mag.) off of ab20.
    It's in eot::amiga:[amiga.amos]amoner.dms
     It's self booting.
I took it home and tested it, it runs fine under 1.3 with a fatter
    agnus.
Under 2.0, it just seems to reboot the system, I didn't have a chance
    to explore it.
For those with 1.3 and no Fat Agnus, you'll have to edit the startup
sequence (expained in text file on disk) to keep it from trying to
    boot up in pal.

Here is an AmigaDOS emulator for Unix. It's written for Amiga Unix
SVR4, but would probably work on any m68k SVR4 system.

To compile it, you need the AmigaDOS include files. I used the
AmigaDOS 1.3 includes that came with a version of the Aztec C
Compiler. Some tweaking may be required for other versions.

Before you get too excited, note that the program emulates a *very*
small subset of the Amiga operating environment. It does not support
graphics at all. It currently emulates enough of exec.library and
dos.library to allow the execution of simple text-only programs, the
same sort of program that can be run entirely in an AmigaDOS CON: CLI
or AUX: CLI.

For example, I have successfully used it to run the Aztec C Compiler
and related utilities under Unix and develop AmigaDOS programs from C
source, entirely under Unix.

Although it is useful for a fairly small set of tasks in its current
form, it is extensible, and could form the basis for a "real" AmigaDOS
emulator. Basically, since I created the basic structure, I've been
implementing a new function whenever I try to execute a program that
fails because it needs that function. In some cases, I implmented
only enough to get the program in question to run.

I haven't worked on it in a while, but I am familiar with the
code and would be willing to help anyone who wants to hack on it.

	Usage: arun [-v verbosity] amiga_program args ...

-v1 allows the display of some warnings and other marginally
useful information when invoking the program.

-v2 adds to the above a message for every AmigaDOS library
	function called.

The "args ..." are concatenated separated by spaces and
	passed to the AmigaDOS program.

If any unimplemented library function is called, the program
is aborted with a cryptic message. The sorts of things that
would cause the Amiga OS to "guru" will cause the process to
	dump core.

Here are some examples of using this program to execute AmigaDOS
versions of "date" and "tar" programs, both compiled with Aztec C:

MultiPlayer115.lzh is now on EOT::. I picked it up from ab20 via ftp.
I haven't tried it yet but the archive seems in tact.

MultiPlayer V1.15 promises to be a player of music ``modules'' and
claims to have new features not normally seen in module players. Its
grace that caused me to get it is that it supports 20+ formats and
tries to support all new ones. I'm no music person, just someone who
wants to listen to the occasional sound so I like this.

It also promises complete V1.3 and V2.0 support using V2.0 features
when available. You need arp.library if your using under V1.3 for the
    file requester.
