178.0. "All Sports talk...All the time!!!" by HPSRAD::RIEU (Read his Lips...Know new taxes!) Tue Aug 06 1991 15:27

I caint find a Talk Radio Note anywhere so here it is!
According to today's Glob, when WEEI starts its all Sports format on
Sep. 3 it will also simulcast on WFQT (1440) in Worcester. WEEI's
signal is pretty week so this is great news for all of us in Central
Mass. The article also said they are talking to some names from the
past. One mentioned was Guy Mainella. I'd love to see him come back!
Another is Andy Moes who did the Joe and Andy show on RKO ti; this
    Spring.

I've been following the 'EEI thing too. One article said that one of their big
reasons for doing this is that they can dismiss much of their news staff, and
thus save big bucks. Andy Moes was really obnoxious with Joe and Andy, I
he will model his style after Don Imus on WFAN.

I'm curious about what people who live in cities with all sports stations think
of them. How is the quality of the hosts? Do they have enough to keep you
interested?

I'll be listening, except I will stick with Dale Arnold during afternoon drive
time over Eddie Andleman.

I live in Philadelphia where WIP-AM (610) does the all sports thing.
They have Tom Brookshier (former Eagle and CBS broadcaster) and Angelo
Cataldi (former Phila Inquirer writer) in the morning drive time, Bill
Cambell (dean of Phila broadcasters, did play by play for the Phillies,
76ers, Eagles, Temple, and Penn, I believe) from 10 to noon, Jody
McDonald (from WFAN and son of the Tiger GM Joe McDonald) noon until 4
and Howard Eskin (Mr. Obnoxious) from 4 to 7. They also do the radio
broadcasts for the Flyers, Eagles and 76ers, as well as Penn State
    football and Notre Dame Football.

They switched over to all sports about 4 years ago and have been making
progress in the ratings. The morning drive time show is a light hearted
look at sports, although not as light as Imus on WFAN. I keep my radio
mainly on WIP. My kids just call it the "sports junk".

When I lived near Philly, my car radio was also fixed at WIP-AM
 (610). I enjoyed the all-sports format quite a bit.

I wish they had it here in Charlotte but it would probably be
saturated with way too much Snuffy Worship and NASCAR arguments.

Don Imus does the morning drive time show on WFAN in NY. I personally have
never heard him, but several friends in the listening area talk about him a lot.

I guess the story is that he used to be a big druggy, and since straightening
himself out hates everyone and everything. He knows very little about sports,
and his morning show is largely a comedy thang. I knew I would like the guy
when my friend told me that he refers to Pat Riley as "a suit with mousse".

 doin' the Pee-Wee Thang.

Even though I live in MA, I listen to WFAN a lot (good car radio).
The team of Ed Coleman (used to work in Boston) and Dave Sims from
10-2 is very good, and Mike and the Mad Dog (Mike Francesa and Chris
Russo) are also an excellent tandem. FAN does a lot of interviews,
keeps call-in short, and the people behind the mike know their stuff
(unlike Eddie, for example!). I listen to Mike and the Mad Dog on the
way home from work rather than Eddie, no matter how weak the signal is.

Imus is solely responsible for turning WFAN into a huge success. It
was really struggling before he came on board. The guy has set the
record for highest ever drive-time ratings in New York. Howard
Stern is a desperate loser who has never had an original or funny
thought in his career.

FYI, Imus also tried a stint as a VJ on VH1 about 5 (?) years ago, but it didn't
last too long. Don't know why he left (no talent? not enough money? not enough
of an audience to feed his ego?), but he wasn't on VH1 for too long before returning
to radio.

Howard smoked Imus when they went tete-a-tete during the morning
drive time. Howard's the funniest, most creative guy there is in
talk radio. If he's a loser that'll come as a helluva surprise to
Arbritron, the program director who just gave him his second huge
contract, and the television network that is set to roll out his
    national TV show.

I would hardly cite the TV show as an indication of success. After
all, plenty of talentless stiffs have been granted chances to strut
their lameness on TV. Witness Morton Downey, Pat Sajak, Alan Thick,
and Wally George to name just a few recent examples. I saw one of
Stern's shows recently, and after ten minutes I was so bored that
I was seeking refuge in the Home Shopping Network.

They don't call me "MrT: SPORTS' Objective Analyst" for being
    unfactual.

Fact is, I'm among the factual in this place. Take .24, wherein
poor JaKe gits humiliated with my factually correct corrections.

Howard Stern celebrated on-air quarterly mulling over the Arbitrons
and how good his numbers were, especially in comparison to the then
sinking Imus' sad-sack numbers. That's why Howard is the highest
paid guy in the biz, he's got the numbers, the demographics. They
wouldn't pay him all that dough if, er, poor JaKe had his "facts
straight" on Stern's listenership, now would they?

As for you, ACCrockmeister. You've been quiet in 17 today. Why
is that. Could it be cuz you went yellow skeert and ran when the

they have been established on the matter (no the least a which

I watch Howard Stern once in a while. He's on Channel 9 (WOR) out
of NJ.

I can take only so much of him. He has had some humdingers on his shows.
I got a real kick out of the night that he had the lesbians on, and
his bikini-clad spokesmodel was shilling Snapple Iced Tea. Howard
decided to give the spokesmodel a Snapple Iced Tea rubdown, and in
the middle of doing that he yells, "Come on, lesbians, join in".

I don't know, I thought it was hysterically funny. The "Swingers" dating
game was cool too.

But, for the most part, with his show running into SNL, I'd rather turn it
over and watch Wayne's World, or Dieter on Sprockets (or *anything*
with Victoria Jackson).....

This morning's paper reports that Boston's all-sports station (WEEI) rouonded
out its lineup by signing Dale Arnold away from WHDH. From what I remember, it
looks like this:

5-9 am - Andy Moes - Morning drive time "Imus Wannabe"
9-12 - Dale Arnold - Former Pats play-by-play, 'HDH talk
	12-4 - Glen Ordway - Celtics play-by-play guy
4-7 - Eddie Andleman - Resident big mouth
7-11 - Craig Mustard - Only sport talk on station for couple of years
11-1 am- Ron Barr - Nationally syndicated sports interviews

I'm personally bummed because I was looking forward to Arnold doing the 4-7 PM
show on WHDH. I don't mind Andleman, but can't take him day in and day out.

Now you're lying. You stated flatly that Stern's listenership was
comprised of low-life scumbags. In fact, his Arbitron's are the
best ever, with a high Q for male listeners between 20-40 with rich
demographics. This is why Howard makes so much money, he commands
the best ad rates in the world's biggest radio market.

Yeah, I forgot about it and left my clock-radio set to WEEI. I was awakened by
this obnoxious jerk whining about the people complaining that the old format
was gone. His big thing is puerile sexual innuendo. Not even subtle about it.
I gotta admit it did get me out of bed in a hurry. Couldn't get to the radio
fast enough to shut it off.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the lineup. Dale Arnold was supposed to be
interviewing Joe Morgan, Dave Gavitt, Tommy Hodson, some Bruin coach, and a
couple of other big names just today. I always liked Dale when he filled in
for Andelman. He's quite knowledgeable in alot of areas.

The syndicated shows at night might also be interesting. It will hopefully be
a good opportunity to get a view of Sports outside route 128.

I'll never understand why they didn't choose something else during the morning.
I think they could have placated the news junkies with at least an attempt at
some downsized reporting for at least a couple of hours. It would certainly
beat this jerk poking everything that moves/talks with a stick.

So what are other news junkies listening to in the morning? I'm probably going
to have to do WBUR.

    Jeff,
WBZ has been running ads touting themselves as Boston's new News
    station.

On the AM dial there really isn't a whole lot of choice out there

and have some pretty interesting topics.

Jeff, you got it right when you referred to that Andy as being
    obnoxious. What a jerk!

I listened in this morning, again, and it didn't get any better. So,
it's bye-bye to WEEI for my morning drive.

One other guy on this station gets to me, and that's Craig Mustard.
I've listened in for about 2 months, on and off. It'll be OFF from now
on. What I can't stand about him is his trying to come off as an
expert on every aspect of every sport. If he's so damn smart, how come
he's working for a living? Why isn't he the manager of the Sox? He's
got all the answers. Too negative for me.

Besides, I miss the news. During the Gulf War, WEEI was the station I
was glued to. They had constant updates and reports, without
interruptions from "talk" hosts. Same with the turmoil in Russia a few
    weeks ago.

It's too bad we've no news station. Guess I'll have to find who has
the best drivetime news and shift over to them. Too much can happen
    overnight in this day's world.

WBZ claims to be Boston's news station but has too much talk for it to
be that - except for one time period. Afternoon drive time, from 4-6,
is strictly news. It's worth listening to if you enjoy news but it's
still not as good as WEEI was.

In morning drive time, their newscasts are excellent and I enjoy
listening to Gil Santos on sports. You do have to put up with Tom
Bergeron as a call-in host in between the news though. He's pretty
bland and does have some interesting guests but it's more like a Today
Show or Good Morning America on the radio.

An all-news format is expensive and it's almost certainly less
expensive for WEEI to go the route they have but I kind of doubt they
can make it as an all-sports station.

I've always thought Andy Moes was completely obnoxious and never
listened to him again after I learned just how obnoxious he was. Read
in the paper today that a couple of morning advertisers are threatening
to pull their ads after hearing Moes yesterday.

early pm Dave Shea - former mornng sports guy and Broons TV guy
Glen Ordway - Celtics play-by-ply, not there a lot
pm drive Eddie Andleman - he of the huge contract
evening Jimmy Meyers - Hoop background

I'll give the am show another chance - Andy Moes was the biggest jerk on radio.
Meyers is great. He does overdo the racial slant, but at least he get excited
about what he talks about. I' love them to put Arnold on soemtime when I could
hear him.

They also have soem good sydicated stuff overnight, particularly Ron Barr out
of San Fran.

Overall I really like the station. My only complaints are that they try too
hard for ratings, and get off sports. This is Andleman's thing. Since Eddie
came to EEI, Mustard started doing the same thing. When he was their only
sports guy, he was pretty straight, now he blabbers about hsi ex-wife, his
girlfriend, etc.

    simulcast agreemement.

This means that Eddie Anvilhaid, Jimmy Meyers, etc, as well as
many of the sports events being broadcasted will no longer be heard
    in the Woostah area.

They'll probably switch over to bible-belt broadcasting......

    I remain,
    unhappy with this!

    Kev,

Stop bitc**n :-). Now you have a chance to catch a REAL all sports
radio station. WFAN - 660 - from NY should come in loud and clear most
    of the time.

Nope, WFAN has a very, very weak signal for me probably because of the
hills in the area block the signals. 660 is also squeezed at both
ends and I get "splash" or "cross-talk". Only time I ever got an
acceptable signal was early Sunday mornings!

    I remain,
wondering if they have Home Shopping on radio?

I always get bleed-over on the station I listen to.

I listen almost exclusively to WPLR 99Rock out of New Haven. They're
at 99.1 on the dial.

While I like Big Band music, I do NOT like the Massachusetts version
on 99.1. On some foggy mornings (always seems to be a foggy morning
when it happens) I get a lot of bleed-over from the Mass station.....

Hmm. 660 comes in pretty well in Cambridge all the time and that is
farther from NY than where you live Kev. Too bad.

I get WFAN pretty good in Leominster, and there's plenty a hills
around. Must have the right bounce.

I do get the Providence stations pretty well though.

Like Denny and MtM said, it's the hills and the bounce!

    I remain,
still not happy about it AND doing late night work like TcM!

Yeah, that reminds me of a story about some baseball player who played
winter ball in Puerto Rico or Venezuela. He had a TV when he was there,
but didn't bring it back to the US with him because "it only picked up
    the Spanish stations"

I get FAN except when I drive home. Might be because I live near the
    WRKO (680) antennae.

Anyone heard any news on WEEI's Jimmy Myers? He collapsed in the
Bulls locker room after the game last night. 11:00 news said he was
'alert' in the hospital. I listened to WEEI for 20 minutes on the way
in and didn't hear them say anything.

All they're saying (at his request) is that he's stable and alert. He has
asked that the details be kept private at this time.
