178.1 | Quality of all Sports Stations? | TNPUBS::MCCULLOUGH | Lindsey is a toddler now! | Tue Aug 06 1991 18:35 | 13 |
| I've been following the 'EEI thing too. One article said that one of their big
reasons for doing this is that they can dismiss much of their news staff, and
thus save big bucks. Andy Moes was really obnoxious with Joe and Andy, I
he will model his style after Don Imus on WFAN.
I'm curious about what people who live in cities with all sports stations think
of them. How is the quality of the hosts? Do they have enough to keep you
interested?
I'll be listening, except I will stick with Dale Arnold during afternoon drive
time over Eddie Andleman.

178.2 | WIP-AM 610 in Philadelphia | GRANPA::DFAUST | Go for 1000% more | Tue Aug 06 1991 19:29 | 17 |
|
I live in Philadelphia where WIP-AM (610) does the all sports thing.
They have Tom Brookshier (former Eagle and CBS broadcaster) and Angelo
Cataldi (former Phila Inquirer writer) in the morning drive time, Bill
Cambell (dean of Phila broadcasters, did play by play for the Phillies,
76ers, Eagles, Temple, and Penn, I believe) from 10 to noon, Jody
McDonald (from WFAN and son of the Tiger GM Joe McDonald) noon until 4
and Howard Eskin (Mr. Obnoxious) from 4 to 7. They also do the radio
broadcasts for the Flyers, Eagles and 76ers, as well as Penn State
football and Notre Dame Football.
They switched over to all sports about 4 years ago and have been making
progress in the ratings. The morning drive time show is a light hearted
look at sports, although not as light as Imus on WFAN. I keep my radio
mainly on WIP. My kids just call it the "sports junk".

| When I lived near Philly, my car radio was also fixed at WIP-AM

I wish they had it here in Charlotte but it would probably be
saturated with way too much Snuffy Worship and NASCAR arguments.

| Don Imus does the morning drive time show on WFAN in NY. I personally have
never heard him, but several friends in the listening area talk about him a lot.
I guess the story is that he used to be a big druggy, and since straightening
himself out hates everyone and everything. He knows very little about sports,
and his morning show is largely a comedy thang. I knew I would like the guy
when my friend told me that he refers to Pat Riley as "a suit with mousse".

Even though I live in MA, I listen to WFAN a lot (good car radio).
The team of Ed Coleman (used to work in Boston) and Dave Sims from
10-2 is very good, and Mike and the Mad Dog (Mike Francesa and Chris
Russo) are also an excellent tandem. FAN does a lot of interviews,
keeps call-in short, and the people behind the mike know their stuff
(unlike Eddie, for example!). I listen to Mike and the Mad Dog on the
way home from work rather than Eddie, no matter how weak the signal is.

I can take only so much of him. He has had some humdingers on his shows.
I got a real kick out of the night that he had the lesbians on, and

decided to give the spokesmodel a Snapple Iced Tea rubdown, and in
the middle of doing that he yells, "Come on, lesbians, join in".
I don't know, I thought it was hysterically funny. The "Swingers" dating

looks like this:
5-9 am - Andy Moes - Morning drive time "Imus Wannabe"
9-12 - Dale Arnold - Former Pats play-by-play, 'HDH talk
12-4 - Glen Ordway - Celtics play-by-play guy
4-7 - Eddie Andleman - Resident big mouth

I gotta admit it did get me out of bed in a hurry. Couldn't get to the radio

I'm looking forward to the rest of the lineup. Dale Arnold was supposed to be

The syndicated shows at night might also be interesting. It will hopefully be
a good opportunity to get a view of Sports outside route 128.
I'll never understand why they didn't choose something else during the morning.
I think they could have placated the news junkies with at least an attempt at

I listened in this morning, again, and it didn't get any better. So,
it's bye-bye to WEEI for my morning drive.
One other guy on this station gets to me, and that's Craig Mustard.
I've listened in for about 2 months, on and off. It'll be OFF from now
on. What I can't stand about him is his trying to come off as an
expert on every aspect of every sport. If he's so damn smart, how come
he's working for a living? Why isn't he the manager of the Sox? He's
got all the answers. Too negative for me.
Besides, I miss the news. During the Gulf War, WEEI was the station I
was glued to. They had constant updates and reports, without
interruptions from "talk" hosts. Same with the turmoil in Russia a few
weeks ago.
It's too bad we've no news station. Guess I'll have to find who has
the best drivetime news and shift over to them. Too much can happen
overnight in this day's world.

| WBZ claims to be Boston's news station but has too much talk for it to
be that - except for one time period. Afternoon drive time, from 4-6,
is strictly news. It's worth listening to if you enjoy news but it's
still not as good as WEEI was.
In morning drive time, their newscasts are excellent and I enjoy
listening to Gil Santos on sports. You do have to put up with Tom
Bergeron as a call-in host in between the news though. He's pretty
bland and does have some interesting guests but it's more like a Today
Show or Good Morning America on the radio.
An all-news format is expensive and it's almost certainly less
expensive for WEEI to go the route they have but I kind of doubt they
can make it as an all-sports station.
I've always thought Andy Moes was completely obnoxious and never
listened to him again after I learned just how obnoxious he was. Read
in the paper today that a couple of morning advertisers are threatening
to pull their ads after hearing Moes yesterday.

Am I mistaken in remebering that Providence has an all-news all a time

Eddie has a couple years left on his contract for BIG BUCKS! They
cain't afford to can him too, and wouldn't anyway. He brings in the
most sponsor money. Craig Mustard is taking over the morning drive time
show. I heard a rumor that they're talking to Guy Mainella (hope so)

I read that Jimmy Meyers is taking over the 7:00 PM show when Mustard

early am: Tom Doyle - non sports guy
Craig Mustard - sports guy
mid am Dale Arnold - best guy they've got
early pm Dave Shea - former mornng sports guy and Broons TV guy
Glen Ordway - Celtics play-by-ply, not there a lot
pm drive Eddie Andleman - he of the huge contract
evening Jimmy Meyers - Hoop background
I'll give the am show another chance - Andy Moes was the biggest jerk on radio.
Meyers is great. He does overdo the racial slant, but at least he get excited
about what he talks about. I' love them to put Arnold on soemtime when I could
hear him.
They also have soem good sydicated stuff overnight, particularly Ron Barr out
of San Fran.
Overall I really like the station. My only complaints are that they try too
hard for ratings, and get off sports. This is Andleman's thing. Since Eddie
came to EEI, Mustard started doing the same thing. When he was their only
sports guy, he was pretty straight, now he blabbers about hsi ex-wife, his
girlfriend, etc.
Once again, apologies to out of towners, who this means nothing to.
