there's no <endonline_popup>. If this isn't the case and you
can see no other miscoding, send me the file and I'll take a
look at it.

trademark symbol. The first thing she should do is check the
VAX DOCUMENT documentation and the 'Coding Documentation Source

are coded correctly. If they are and she still has problems, ask
her send me one of the files with the footnotes in the heads and
I will take a look at it.

| Thanks Mary, she'll take a look at those things. Is there a list
somewhere that users can use to decypher these VOILA error messages?
I can see now how a '_DECW_HEADFN_TM_3_8' could be a problem with a
trademark in a footnote, but it wasn't very obvious yesterday!

| Yes, there is. Dick Buttlar (STAR::) has written a "Guide to Producing

and many others. I will ask him to post a reply to this message
with a pointer to that document.
Thanks,

113.8 | Symbol = '-', but no tag translation errors | MARVIN::WALSH | The Other Stubbs Effect | Thu Sep 14 1989 08:47 | 11 |
| I've encountered a VOILA error in which the undefined symbol is given
as '-'.
The diagnostics section in the documentation says that this error is
caused by a previous tag translation error. However, the build that
generated this VOILA error contained no tag translation errors.
Any ideas?

113.10 | VOILA - _DECW_SEMIFORMAL error | MARVIN::WALSH | If it's wind, I'll call it Shaw | Mon Nov 06 1989 07:24 | 16 |
| I have a new problem with VOILA errors.
I get two errors with symbol = _DECW_SEMIFORMAL_20 and
_DECW_SEMIFORMAL_15 (reported in that order). Now the documentation
says that these errors indicate a miscoded <online_popup>, and an
earlier reply in this topic indicates that the most likely reason is a
missing <endonline_popup>. I checked the 15th and 20th <online_popup>
in my file (I also checked all the others), but they seem OK to me. I
also checked for the other conditions mentioned in the documentation
(nested popups, inclusion of formal figures or tables in popups), but
none of these seem to apply.
My brain has gone to DEFCON 2 on this one. Any ideas?

Chris

113.14 | | RAGMOP::UTT | | Thu Nov 16 1989 20:04 | 15 |
| The problem is a limitation on the use of <online_popup> around
chunks. It's really the same problem people have when they use
the tag around head tags (this is documented with the tag
description in 'Coding Documentation Source Files for the DECwindows
Bookreader') -- the problem became chronic when we went to finer
granularity of chunks, and lots more things became chunks. For the
short term, the solution is to remove the <online_chunk> tags in
the paramdeflists. The long-term solution is for me to overhaul
the <online_popup> tags, something that's needed for a variety of
reasons, to be a lot smarter. This is on my list for a future release
of the online tools and has a high priority.
Wish I could be more helpful,
Mary

113.15 | Does <paramdeflist> imply <online_chunk>? | MARVIN::WALSH | If it's wind, I'll call it Shaw | Fri Nov 17 1989 12:44 | 12 |
| Mary,
Are you implying that a <paramdeflist> contains implicit <online_chunk>
tags? I'm confused. I have many instances of <paramdeflist>s containing
<online_popup>s that build without problems. Why should some fail and
not others? Furthermore, since I don't own the online.reference doctype
that I'm using, I have no control over the tags that it contains. Does
this mean that I have to give up using <online_popup>s in order to
build successfully for online? If so, it seems a rather pointless
exercise.
Chris
|
113.16 | | VAXUUM::UTT | | Fri Nov 17 1989 16:42 | 15 |
| Chris,
No, I'm saying the paramitems are chunks -- the smallest units
addressible by the Bookreader (for example, from the index). See
note 118.1 for a detailed discussion of chunks and topics.
I plan to make some substantial improvements to the way <online_popup>
works but it won't be immediately.
Could you send me a (short) example of an <online_popup> that works
and one that doesn't?
Thanks,
Mary

113.18 | (HEADx> undefined error | CASEE::THOMSON | Richard Thomson | Wed Jan 24 1990 13:05 | 32 |
| Hi guys,
I also have an "undefinition" problem, but not quite the same as those
listed here. My log file says:
%TAG-W-TAGNOTDEF, text, line 48, file
DG_MEMEX_CONCEPTS.SDML
Tag <HEAD1> is undefined
%TAG-W-TAGNOTDEF, text, line 141, file
DG_MEMEX_CONCEPTS.SDML
Tag <HEAD2> is undefined
This only happens in my online build. The documentation led me to
believe that it might be to do with the <SET_ONLINE_TOPIC> tag (and
this would make some sense given the lack of problem for other
destinations) so I moved the <SET...> tag to the other end of my
profile file, but no change to the error.
The doc set also says that only the first occurance will be flagged, so
I don't know if the problem is with these two in particular (I think
they are the first occurances in each case) or with all of them. But:
%TAG-I-UNDEFTAGS, There were 115 undefined tag invocations
would seem to indicate a global problem 8*)
'Tis very curious though, wot? I mean, how does a global tag get to be
undefined?
Regards
Richard

VOILA ERROR--The following symbols are undefined:

Naturally it halted the bookbuild in its tracks. I had high hopes it would be

clues? Nothing else (seemed) wrong.

If the symbol "DIR_EX" is being defined somewhere in your source
code send me a pointer to the dvi and log files and the sdml file where
"DIR_EX" is defined.
And now for a quick tutorial on the VOILA ERROR which in newer versions
(v1.2B) became BOOKWRITER and in future release will be DVC$_UNDEFSYM.
What the message is trying to say is that a reference was made to a
chunk with the symbolic name of "DIR_EX". Unfortunately for whatever
reason the chunk has lost it's symbolic name or it never had one and a
link to cannot be made to it.
