513.0. "Slot racing cars in Basingstoke- a UK first..." by KERNEL::PARRY (Trevor Parry) Fri Nov 29 1991 15:30

There is a kind of slot car racing in between Scalectrix and full blown
radio controlled stuff. It's quite popular in Japan where they have
'meetings' and much money is spent gambling and participating so I believe.
There are clubs that support the concept. However there have been no
tracks in the UK until now.

The first slot car racing track was specially built and imported and guess
where it went... Basingstoke. The Brighton Hill Snooker Centre that was.

Why the note you may ask ? Well I quite like Basingstoke and there have
been a few people who seem to think that not much goes on. So now you know
that something never seen in the rest of the UK has happened first in
Basingstoke. What a hip town !

Unfortunately it closed down and disappeared after three months of not
making any money. :-(

So if you go to 'Premiers' and see all these car logos and tracks all
over the place with no cars or tracks, you'll know why.

Not the first I'm afraid !!

There was one in Southall in the early seventies when Scalextric
was even more trendy than it is now.

Ah Ha!. But it was reported to have the Biggest Multi-story Car Park in
the UK and reported to have the fastest roundabouts in Europe, although
I 'aint seen them move an inch yet.

re.0/1:

Actually there were slot car circuits all over the country. There was an
Electric Car Racing Association (ECRA) which organised races and championships.
Racing write ups appeared in a magazine called "Model Cars".
