Today's exciting event took place in front of the museum, a crowd of
about 40 people were gathered around watching a mechanical digger dig a
    big hole.

noticed a piece of fluff on my trousers which of course I removed most

Listen you ungrateful lot, what more do you want.
You have two swimming pools, ice skating rink, bowling alley,
10 screen cinema, SEVERAL sports centres, riding schools, events
going on every weekend, in fact if I recall we had a fair last
    weekend.
Do you all just sit in front of the T.V and wait for events to come
    to you?

No, I sit at a VDU & wait for people to tell me about exciting events happening
elsewhere.

Has anyone looked at the hole recently ? - is the digger still there ?
have the council sold the hole yet ? - will they put a roof on it ? -
is it going to be a roundabout ?

Depends what you mean by "decent". Live music venues what I have
    discovered so far include:
The Pig and Whistle, The Royal Oak, The Bass House (occasionally), The
Hatch (Jazz on Sundays, not the modern stuff though), The Railway Club,
The Ex-Serviceman's Club, The Conservative Club, Sainsbury's Griffin
    Club...

The Royal Naval Club, offers Cheap Drink, and Live jazz on Mondays. The
RNA is next to the B.L garage on NEW ROAD. The type of jazz played
varies as its usually a turn up and play jamming session. not sure if
    this will fit your requirements..

I saw the famous digger yesterday morning, there was also a yellow
dumper truck. I wasn't too impressed with the hole though, it looked to me as
though they were just resurfacing the Market Square (perhaps it will be the new
Centre Court) rather than actually excavating any subterranean structure.

According to the front page of the Gazzette, they found what they
thought was a tunnel, leading to the vaults of Barclays Bank. Then
they decided it went to McDonalds.

Now they've researched it a bit more and found it was some sort of
tank for washing out the sewers. Apparently they used to fill it
with water, then pull the plug out to give the pipes a good wash
    through.

Now they will probably fill it with earth and plant one of the trees
that the digging was done for in the first place.

Entirely agree, not to mention a decent restaurant that stays
	open past 22:30.

Basingstoke is the only place I know that becomes a ghost-town
after six o'clock in the evening. Except, of course, for the odd
gang of brain-deads smashing in shop windows or other wholesome
	entertainment.

442.20Where were you when Plumes was open????TASTY::JEFFERYI shot the sherrif (and the deputy!)Sun Jun 16 1991 20:2511
Well,

to an extent, you've only got yourselves to blame. IMHO Plumes was the
best restaurant in town, and it closed down recently due to poor trade,
and doubling council rents. Plumes is just a small example of what is
happening to shops in the "nice" bit of basingstoke. A lot of places
on Church Street and London Road will close down shortly, to be replaced
by Building Societies and Estate Agents.

I must admit, that I'm biased, and I used to work there, but I now have
nowhere I'd really like to eat in Basingstoke.

442.26From a loyal ex Plumes Waiter!TASTY::JEFFERYMake a new plan StanFri Jul 05 1991 18:5411
Plumes was opened by the then Restaurant Manager at Palmers 3 years ago.

He took what he liked about Palmers, and changed what he didn't.

So, whilst Palmers has the same menu it did 5 years ago, Plumes changed
its menu every three months. This was good for regular customers.

Anyway, I eat at Palmers when I first came to Basingstoke, and I haven't
felt the urge to eat there again.

I tried Palmers when I first came to Basingstoke, I would eat there again.
Funny though, I haven't yet - 12 months later!

Where's Plumes.?

Perhaps these notes should go in a "For Discussion of restaurants" note :-)
or should we all make an exciting event in a restaurant?

(Ha ! now Mr Mod can't move my note ;-)

Plumes WAS excellent. I say was, because, as I mentioned, it died because of
the "Basingstoke effect". So when people complain about the lack of
Restaurants, they have themselves to blame.

I don't see how you can blame the people for wanting to eat or
drink in an area with a bit of life and character.
