103.0. "Johnson & / Foster, Higgins" by DELREY::LANGSTON_BR (sweeping agreement, my ***) Fri Jul 06 1990 23:30

My friend works in the International Consulting department of Johnson &
Higgins, a division(?) of Foster, Higgins, here in L.A. She said her
boss's boss, from New York, asked her to come up with "some proposals"
about how they can improve the communication within their relatively
small (15-20 people in the U.S., but with "correspondents" all over
    the world), but distributed organization.

She then told me and I began setting up a meeting with a Sales Rep.
Before we finalized the arrangements, she said she had talked to
someone in their MIS Dept. (smart friend!), and he said "We're all IBM,
hardware-wise, but we do buy software from third-parties, sometimes."

Then, my friend says, he told her that they're looking for some e-mail
system, for the whole Los Angeles office (many people).

Does anybody out there in insurance-land know anything about Johnson &
Higgins, or Foster, Higgins (or Miller Huggins, one-time baseball great)?

Any ideas on how we might further pursue this?

I talked to my friend, again. She said that they're looking for e-mail
for the the whole country/world and that they do use some third-party
mail package that they can use from some PCs. (I forget the name of
the third-party package, something *like* Quick Comm - I assume it
connects them to a public network like MCI-mail.)

I was hoping to hear about some on-going sales efforts at J&H or F,H.
Does the lack of a reply here indicate no sales effort? Let's get one
going! Talk to me, Hartford. Talk to me, New York!

    With breath abated,

Subject: J & H QUESTION

        BRUCE,

Reference: Your insurance notes file question on J & H.

J & H is a large alphabet brokerage house for insurance.

That means they sell, or act as the middle person between
commercial customers and insurance companies. You will find most of
their business to be in the Property Casualty side of
        insurance.

That means workers compensation, liability, property, auto, etc..

Their structure is very similar to the Big 8 [ 5 ] Accounting Firms.
The typical requirements should be intra office communications, inter
office communications between other J & H Offices and some insurance
        companies.

The unique part is that they are the competition and at the same time
the marketing arm for insurance companies.

They market to large accounts an usually to a person called a Risk
Manager. They would have a need to communicate and pass information.

A major service they sell would be risk financing plans that would
        require financial modeling packages.

J & H is just one of many - Frank B. Hall is another along with
        Crawford.

Hope this helps. If you need more - just ask.

        JKP
103.4Try the Willis Faber teamCHEFS::COLLINSPMon Jul 30 1990 15:3119
    Bruce,

Until recently Johnson Higgins had a close relationship with Willis
Faber in the UK. The recent merger between Willis Faber and Corroon &
Black is likely to change that somewhat.

However, Willis Faber is a very large account for us in the UK and the
team here had quite a bit to do with associated companies over the last
couple of years. My suggestion as a long shot is that you contact the
team in the Newmarket, England office to see if they can shed any light
    for you.

Contacts are: Account Manager - Steve Mann @EOO (850 3362)
                     EIS Consultant - Alan Brown @EOO (850 3367)

    Regards,
