4417.0. "Benefits Express & HR revisited..." by DECWET::LENOX (don't let facts get in your way) Fri Feb 09 1996 17:59

/start complaint mode

I changed my family status in late December and Benefits Express
failed to get that info from Digital which I noted because I had
suddenly gone from family to single coverage on medical and dental
in early January paystubs. That was not ok, I called BE, they
took the information over the phone, I thought things were cleared
up, etc... However, my husband's coverage with our HMO was
"terminated" (as far as the HMO is concerned) on 1/1/96 which isn't
fine since I just found there was a problem yesterday. BE tells me
today that there was something sent out (via e-mail or notes) from
usbenefits telling us of potential problems if there was a change
in family status at the end of the year and that we should have called
them (which I had, but not because I was told there could be problems!).
BE tells me that they've sent out new tapes to the HMO so that it
will be cleared up but they will only call the HMO if the HMO still
doesn't have that information by the time my husband has an appt
(next week). Now, I do not appreciate finding out that there is
a problem at the HMO side without warning, but at least the HMO was
willing to make an appt (or I suppose BE might not want to call them
then either).

/end complaint mode

I have a few questions...

Who inside of Digital takes complaints about the interaction
between Digital and Benefits Express (so far it has been an
express waste of my & my husband's time)? PSN told me BE would
have to clear things up but I would like to know where to get
things moving in Digital if there is a problem with BE. The
other question is when/how/if anyone heard of potential problems
with BE if there was a family status change in late '95? I
pretty much save all of my mail and don't recall seeing this.
If it was in a notes conference, comet isn't picking it up, from
what I can tell. Benefits Express wants to save their time by
telling me to call them if the HMO doesn't have this information
(which is another call) on the day my husband has an appt, they
will waste more of Digital's time on this. They weren't clear
on the process of how this will be cleared up but I certainly
don't trust that it will be cleared up in timely fashion.

thanks,

Amy

    Amy,

Please see note 4295. If I hadn't been a reader of this notes
file I would not have noticed. A week or so after I read the
note, I did receive a message and believe it was sent "company-wide".

4417.4topic 4295 is not pertinentDECWET::LENOXdon't let facts get in your wayFri Feb 09 1996 20:1318
Ahh, well topic 4295 discusses people who were part of the system
prior to open enrollment. This in no way applied to my situation
since my family status change occurred at the end of November
and the paperwork went into HR about the 20th of December. I did
note specifically that that situation was not germane. Perhaps
the BE representative was not paying particular attention to the
matter at hand and mistakenly told me there was something on this
or wanted to mollify me in some fashion. It was very clear I was
not a happy camper. Certainly the last thing I wanted to hear was,
"trust us, everything will work out fine. Bother us later if you have
problems."

thanks, anyway, for the response

-Amy

(I don't want to even know what John Hancock may screw up regarding this).
4417.5Similar problem.DV780::BROOKSFri Feb 09 1996 20:4633

    Amy,

I had a similar problem. We changed from HMO to HMO-Elect during the
enrollment period. The confirmation from Benefits Express was correct.
My payroll stub was correct. Every indicator said things were as they
    were supposed to be.

WRONG! My wife goes to the HMO for treatment February 1st and is
told by the HMO that "your employer has terminated your eligibilty
for the HMO health plan." Turns out that on January 1, instead of
changing our health plan from HMO to HMO-Elect, they just told the
HMO to remove us from the HMO plan. No notice from Benefits Express
and no notice from the HMO. The HMO told us that they never notify
plan members of cancellations, because people routinely cancel their
    health plans for legitimate reasons.

So Benefits Express goofed by sending the HMO the wrong instructions.
The HMO did what Benefits Express told them to do. Neither party
thinks it is necessary to inform the ***CUSTOMER*** of this status
change. I am not impressed with outsourced benefit management!

The good news is that Benefits Express discovered the error at their
end, FAXed the info to the HMO, and our coverage was made retroactive
back to 1/1/96. They were very helpful and apologetic, but an
error with your medical benefits is very aggrevating. My wife was
NOT a happy camper when she called me. {:-o

Seems like I have seen a lot of problems with this process in this
    notesfile.

4417.6I got terminated tooSWAM1::WONG_HEWong @CSMC for a lifetimeSat Feb 10 1996 05:0010
The same happen to my family we change from HMO elect to HMO, me wife
goes to the pharmacy to get the meds, the pharmacy calls Pacificare,
they say that we are terminated. We call Pacificare, they fix the
problem, a week later the problem happens again when I have to get meds
for myself!!! Finally we get it fixed, three weeks later when my wife
takes my son in to see the doctor, the doctor's office informs my wife
that our coverage has been terminated by Pacificare. Payroll deductions
and Benefits Express documentation is correct!!! I hope who ever can
fix this read this becuase it has made my life miserable these last 3
    weeks!!!!
