| If there is a datacenter in your facility, they might use them for
nightly backups. You could contact your local datacenter or one near
you. Please be sure that the tapes are erased if they contain sensitive
data before passing them on.

I've seen old tapes destroyed by security if they contain highly
sensitive material.
Otherwise they usually get sent to salvage.

| Hi Bob,
Hey you guys, Bob works in the Santa Clara ACT, a good size
datacenter.
Bob - two places to try, the first would be the local DIS at 521-3500.
You might also try the LA Benchmark Center as they tend to archive
benchmark systems for years.

| We use lots of TF85's at our site, and we (currently) trash the plastic
boxes that they come in; is there some{one, place} that can use them?
Can they be sent somewhere to be re-used?

cartridges come in for use in storing the 3.5-inch floppy diskettes.

1564.8 | Maybe I can help.. | MTADMS::MAISTROSKY | | Fri Nov 01 1991 17:39 | 30 |
| I hope this may help.
Corporate Policy indicates the proper procedure to dispose of material
such as this, unless authorized alternatives are created. From the
sounds of this discussion, some folks no of neither. And that's
understandable.
I represent the PDC (Property Disposition Center) in DOO. We receive
large amounts of tapes from all areas (internal/external) for
disposition.
Currently, we pay an outside vendor to properly dispose of mag tapes.
This process satisfies all legal, environmental, security, and moral
conditions. However, we are negotiating with firms to reduce our costs,
and perhaps do even better financially (via various re-cycling
alternatives). Terms and conditions have not yet been reached, but when
we get there, I'll post a note on this conference...and I'll take them
all back. I can't say now, to ship them all to me, since the "old"
process is still in place, and the increased volumes would make us all
crazy.
I hope this offers some hope that in the short term I'll offer you an
outlet for the tapes. I am also working with vendors in the cartridge
space (TK50's, including the boxes...) and I hope to offer some relief
in this area as well.
Shouldn't be more than a few weeks.
So as not to bog down the file...any additional communication can be
sent directly to me:

Why are we disposing of media such as TK50s and magtapes? No doubt at
the very same time people are ordering the same stuff from IEG. How
about recycling it through IEG?

| Yeah, this is stupid.
If you've got any good-condition, unwanted TK50 cartridges,
send 'em to me, mail stop LKG1-3/B16. I'll put them to use,
and save DEC money by (a) not paying someone to dispose of
them (b) not paying for new ones.

I agree.. 'Dispose of the sensitive stuff' if
you have to. All the rest can meet the needs of others
in the company. So send me any TK50/TK70's you no longer
need. They WILL be put to good use for Digital and our
customers. Better yet, if your east of the ol' miss
send 'em to -1, west of the miss, send 'em to me !

| If it's "sensitive stuff" just put it on a degausser (every large computer
room should have one) before you put it back to use.

Some people are a bit paraniod about their media, some rightly so.
( but the degausser's work for me ).
