162.0. "FDL$GENERATE not giving complete FDL" by DSNENG::S_ROSCIO (Fight Crime - Shoot Back) Sat Feb 08 1997 14:40

    G'day -

The FDL$GENERATE routine and ANALYZE/RMS/FDL generate different
results. In particular, FDL$GENERATE does not produce a complete
output with indexed or direct files.

Does a callable method exist to get a complete FDL output? Is there an
exposed entry point into the ANALYZE/RMS/FDL code?

    Thanx!

FDL problems are best discussed in the RMS notes file: VMSZOO::RMS_OPENVMS

If you decide to open up a topic there, it woudl be exceedingly useful
to add an indication of exactly what you believe to be missing.
Best I know, FDL$GENERATE, while indeed regretably using entirely
different code from ANAL/RMS, is believed to generate suffient
information to re-create a file with the same essential characteristics.

The main difference is ofcourse the STATISTICS section. IMHO that
difference is warranted at this requires MAJOR additional complexity
which lives well in a dedicated utility and is not critical to
a (hopefully) smallish shareable image. If you need thos details,
then I suggest you simply (LIB$)SPAWN ANAL/RMS/FDL as that 'feared'
SPAWN overhead will be completly overshadowed ky the expense of
    the (standalone required!) ANAL/RMS task.

In other words... WHAT PROBLEM ARE YOU TRYING TO SOLVE.

    Hein.
