407.0. "NSR/NT, ZSO versus Legato patch issues" by BACHUS::DIDDEN () Fri Feb 14 1997 03:38

I have a little question about patches,

On /pub/networker/..../NT4.3 we announce the following patches:

    nta4301.zip
    nta4302.zip

    and the following README:

The following patches are available for Networker for Windows NT Alpha
V4.3 via our web site or anonymous FTP site.

    Web: http://www.zso.dec.com/Products.d/NetWorker.d/NetWorker.html
    ftp: ftp.zso.dec.cm directory /pub/networker/patches/NTV4.3

    =====================================================================
    File nta4301.zip contains patch NT4.3-001

    Digital ID: none
    Legato ID: none
Applicability: Networker Server for V4.3 for Windows NT Alpha running
on Windows NT 3.51 or Windows NT 4.0

Jukeboxes that are configured with bar codes enabled and volume labels
that match bar codes encounter a problem where volumes can not be
    labeled
from the Networker Administrator. Instead the user will see a pop up
window with a message that says something similar to "Slot 1 is
    currently
    empty".

Install patch 4.3-001 which contains a new NSRJB.EXE.

To install this patch follow these instructions:

    - Decompress the .zip file.
    - Change to your \nsr\bin directory.
    - Rename NSRJB.EXE to NSRJB.OLD.
    - Copy the new NSRJB.EXE from this patch to the \nsr\bin directory.

    =======================================================================
    File nta4302.zip contains patch NT4.3-002

    Digital ID: none
    Legato ID: none
Applicability: Networker for V4.3 for Windows NT Alpha running
on Windows NT 3.51 or Windows NT 4.0, client and server.

Fixes a timing problem that manifested itself as an occasional failure
to return all client attributes to a Digital UNIX server when the
server defined the client or changed its attributes.

Install patch 4.3-002 which contains a new NSREXECD.EXE.

To install this patch follow these instructions:

    - Decompress the .zip file.
    - Shutdown the Networker services on the WindowsNT client machine.
       - First stop the Networker Backup and Recover service if it exists.
       - Next stop the Networker Remote Exec service.
       - Next stop the Networker Portmapper service.
    - Change to your \nsr\bin directory.
    - Rename NSREXECD.EXE to NSREXECD.OLD.
    - Copy the new NSREXECD.EXE from this patch to the \nsr\bin directory.
    - Restart the Networker services in the reverse order that they were
    stopped.

On the other hand at the Legato FTP site the following patches can be
obtained also for the NT 4.3 version:

    nt430002.exe
    nt430003.exe

which go together with the following README:

            DN TN BS EH SC

    Description:

This patch fixes problems when attempting to recover files that are
open. It also fixes problems when attempting to backup profiles that
are open. This patch replaces patch 4.3-001.

    Problem:

When recovering open files a user might get the error:

            D:\Win32app\nsr\bin\wwork.dll

    Problem:

During a scheduled backup of a Windows NT v4.0 system if a user is
logged in to the machine that user's profile will not get backed up
    properly.

    Problem:

When attempting to restore data that was backed up by NetWorker for NT
v3.5x the following errors may be encountered:

            H:\PROJECTS\KT\SPRITES\SCROLL\MX_LADUDW.6
            Recover: write failed to
            H:\PROJECTS\KT\SPRITES\SCROLL\MX_LADUDW.6:
            File alreadyexists

            Recover: H:\PROJECTS\KT\SPRITES\SCROLL\MX_LADUDW.6: unable to

            File alreadyexists

Recover: D:\WINNT35\SYSTEM32\BASESRV.DLL: you must reboot to
            restore this file!
Recover: D:\WINNT35\SYSTEM32\_ASESRV.DLL : unable to set file
            attributes - LastError 0

    Solution:

            Apply this patch.

    Release Date:

            January 15, 1997

    Products:

            NetWorker for NT

    Version:

            4.3

    Effected configurations:

            NetWorker for NT servers.

    Authors:

            RL PR DN

    Description:

Intermittently, deamon.log file is filled up with the following error
    message:

            "<date> <time> nsrindexd:fixing page in file savercs"

This message indicates that NetWorker is repairing corruption in the
on-line file indexes. The problem is that NetWorker would report this
message for every page in the index. Their are thousands of pages in
an index and enough messages are generated that the hard disk can
    become full.

This patch makes NetWorker report the total number of pages fixed per
index on one line instead of many lines.

I know ( think ) that the patches we announce on /pub/networker/.../NT
are the ones for NT on Alpha while those announced by Legato are for
    NT on intel ....

Anyway how do we deal with the fact that 2 sources of patches are
    available ?
I have a customer with a V4.0 NT box that read the Legato README's and
now is asking if we have the same problems on NT/Alpha ( he thinks
he has got a alike problem on his Alpha box ( open files issue )), and
now is wondering wether he can apply the Legato patch on that system
    ....

Can you comment on this ....???!!!!!

    thanks,

These are two separate products produced by two separate
companies. Each of the customer support organizations
responds to problems reported by their respective customer
bases. Sometimes one company will notify the other
of a serious problem which should be addressed by a
patch, but this is the exception more than the rule.
If one of Digital's customers is actually experiencing a
problem with the Alpha NT product which they believe
is already patched on Legato's Intel NT product, they
should go through normal Digital support channels
to request that the problem be addressed for Alpha NT.

The customer should not "patch" his Alpha NT system
with Intel NT binaries.
