| Steve,
Thornton's the man. Marleau? He sure has racked up the points
in the WHL. Got a bunch in the playoffs too but his team was out
in 5.
But who cares; B's can't say no to Thornton

Andy - I read an article in the Boston Globe, the kid the B's just
signed (Aitkins) made a comment that Patrick Marleau was a better
player than Thorton - and the B's should forget about going after Thorton.
He claimed that the only reason Marleau doesn't get the press is that he
doesn't play in the OHL.
I've been trying to find a scouting report on him........ but haven't
found one yet.

Do the B's have Hartford's pick this year? If so I wonder if
Marleau would slip that far?

| Marleau is rated #2 by the Central Scouting Bureau.
Samsonov, who was rated #1 and/or #2 back in the Fall, is now 5th
or 6th.
Remember, this year, and the next, are suppose to be EXCELLENT draft
years. Unlike last year where even the top 3 stunk.

| ...sooo, da B's get the #1 pick...what will Pinhead-Sinden do now?
At least the B's are in the driver's seat now....they can (hopefully)
sign Thornton and the #8 pick, get a new coach, and start building...or
they can trade him for 4-5 players, and build quickly....many teams
will be contacting Sinden about this scenario, mark my words (of
course, I wanted Parker as coach...but I digress)....at least there's
light at the end of the tunnel...

| yeah...what happened to televising the lottery live between periods 1
and 2 of the Devils/Rangers game on FOX ??? They announced it would be
shown earlier in the day and in the papers. Then they never even
mentioned it during the telecast and we had to watch Roenick and some
other clowns re-enact some crease violations. What the hell was that?
I was looking forward to watching the B's get the pingpong ball picked
for first....oh well

I can see the arguments in here 5 years from now. EVERYONE has
Thornton rated #1, and Marleau rated #2. The B's will take Thornton
with the #1 pick. If Marleau turns out to be a better player in 5
years. Everyone will be saying Harry took the wrong player.

I heard this morning that Sinden said that they need a goalie, so thorton is
not a definite pick for the Bruins. Some Goalie from the Quebec league has
been rated #1 goalie for most if not all of the season. (I forgot his name.)
Harry said that the bruins need goaltending to be improved??? I think they
need everything improved.

I could see Harry maybe saying that about the goalie situation
more to get GM's calling about a trade to include a goalie in any
trade packages.
I would still be very surprised if Harry doesn't pick Thornton.
If Harry sits tight He'll get the Thornton and a highly rated D Man
2 things he needs more than a replacement for Carey. Who was/is still
supposed to be much better than he showed B's fans end of last season.
I wonder if Sinden & Milbury would consider trading picks?
Milbury has 4th & 5th overall.
Would you do it is the next question ?
Of course it will never happen because they hate each other but what
would you do ?

| The goalie's name is Robert Luongo and he plays for Val D'or in
the Quebec league. He's very mobile for a big guy and he is very
good but I don't think he should be picked 1st overall. The B's
also have 8th pick overall. I'd wait to see if he is available then
and try to get him if indeed Harry wants a goalie. It would be nice
if Marleau slipped through and the B's could get him with the 8th
pick but that's just wishful thinking I guess.

| ......... Everyone will be saying Harry took the wrong player.
This is sooo true, any chance to blame Harry WILL HAPPEN within this
conference. I'm sure it was Harry's fault for not signing Parker.
Ron P. - I think it would be a huge mistake for the B's NOT to sign
Thorton. The media would be all over Harry (and this file) if he doesn't
do what's been written. I myself, want to see Thorton here...... I want
the B's to build this team with young players.

| ...Neff, I totally agree with you..I'd LOVE to see Thornton signed,
then see who's around in the 8th spot...get a good, reliable coach (we
don't need a SUPERstar coach, ala Keenan)...I know I'm gonna get raked
over the coals for this, but Barry Melrose has been hinting that he'd
love the job, and face it, he's media-savey, the chicks would love him
(my wife wants me to grow my hair long again...jeez, honey!), he did a
good job with the Kings, and he's available....IMHO, obviously, but
a choice that hasn't been bantered about yet....if the B's sign
Thornton and a good 8th rounder, start building again, get Aitken to
play some good "D", and get a good coach, the fans will show up
again...

Why would the media be all over this file? We're just a bunch of
wannabe hockey analysts and I don't really think that too many out
there in the world give a rat's rump what we think. ;-)
Sorry, I couldn't resist...
In reality, do you really think that we second guess Harry wrong
back he took Kluzak over Bellows? That's the only time when I can
really remember the folks in here berating Harry for making the wrong
draft choice. If Harry thinks that he has half a chance of signing
Thorton then I'd imagine that he'll pick him. If he doesn't think that
he has a snowball's chance in hell of signing him that I imagine that
he'll pick someone that he thinks he can sign. Twice Harry has had a
top notch goalie in Ranford and he let him go. Now he's saying that
this team has goaltending problems? It's a problem that he himself
created. I'd take a wait and see attitude before I condemn Carey. Let
him start the next season. I'd be willing to be that he'll come around.

171.16 | Roberto Luongo; a can't-miss NHL superstar | KAOFS::WATTERS | | Mon May 12 1997 20:14 | 11 |
| If Luongo is still around when the B's pick again, they'd be crazy not
to pick him. The hockey analyst in Quebec say they've never seen a
goalie so big yet so mobile; better than Brodeur in his Jr days.
Luongo was rated 6th overall 2 months ago. If you consider that the
Isles won't draft him w/ the 4th-5th picks (they also have Fichaud/Salo)
then he may just be available.
Marleau? If SJ doesn't pick him, then he'll be gone by the 3rd pick.
