| Yup, and Derek claims that the reason Fred is retiring is NOT because
he is 78 years young but because he's the last of the play by play guys
who calls the game by using the players names. He just can't see the
guys anymore from being 7 stories up... 8-)

| Clearly Fred had slowed down the last couple of years, (he relied more
and more on Derek I think) but I, for one, am sad to see him go.
Whenever I think of my youth and the Bruins glory days, Orr/Espo, etc.,
it's Fred's voice that goes through my head ("Esposito shoots,
HE SCOOORES!!!!). And you could never question his loyalty to the
B's. Some would call that being a "homer", which of course, Fred was,
but I thought that made it kind of fun. Hey, the guy helped INVENT
hockey play-by-play, and I think he's still the best at describing
the game as it unfolds (listen to ANYONE else do it, it's not as good).
Fred wasn't perfect, but he gave it his all.

A True original, not quite as bombastic as a Johnny Most, but most
certainly as original...gimme the old dude announcers ANY day, rather
than a Dale Arnold clone......
Salute, Fred!

As much as I hated listening to Fred through the years, I've grown to
appreciate him since Dale Arnold took over his NESN duties. I REALLY
hope that Dale doesn't get the UPN38 contract. Gord always has a look
on his face that says, GEEK!!!
I will miss the Turk - he is the BIGGEST "Homer" of them all. A Bruin never
lost a fight, even Odgers.

| "A Bruin never last a fight"
If a Bruin did not win the fight it was because he lost his balance.
Then he would say, " Well I would give the Bruin the second half".
Overall they were very entertaining. They will be sadly missed.

I actually would prefer to have Dave Shea back instead of
Dale Arnold... What ever happend to Dave Shea ? It seemed he was
being groomed to take over for John but then he suddenly vanished.

there's a difference between thinking he did a good job (towards the
end) and enjoying him because of tradition and fond childhood memories.
Seems like that all we have left now are memories from great glory days
gone by.

Andy - I think it's more, we get Dale Arnold as his replacement !!! That's
worse than the B's not making the play-offs.
My problem with Fred is, he still lives in the 70's and he's too much of a
homer. I can still hear him, "Orr with the puck" - uhmmmm Fred, that's
Bourque. 8*)

| While it is true that he will always be considered the TV voice of
the Bruins (well, as long as our generation is alive anyway) I'm not
all that sorry to see him go. Over the past few seasons, he's called
Bourque, Orr a few too many times for me. He and Turk have rambled on
and on endlessly while the stadium announcer was announcing a penalty,
and they hardly ever relate just what the exact infraction really is.
So you either hope that they tell ya, or you try to listen past them to
the PA system in the background to pick out who went to the box and
why. On occaisions the camera has shown a player in the box and they
never even alluded to the fact that one team or the other was playing
on a power play until halfway through the power play. Nope, you can
keep 'em both. Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya,
and all that. I guess I stand alone in saying that by comparison I
prefer Dale Arnold. Sorry. It is the announcers job to relate all the
pertinent FACTS of the game to the viewing audience. In my humble
opinion, over the past few years, Fred and Derek didn't do a very good
job at that.
