Has anyone any idea why ALL-IN-1 documents might start being created with a 9 character filename instead of 10, and why they are beginning with an 'I' instead of a 'Z' ?? It was a customer that first pointed this out, but having checked my directory and several others, I notice that this is quite common, but for no apparent reason! They are using ALL-IN-1 v3.0-1 and VMS v5.4-2 Has anyone else noticed this, or has any explanation as to why this is happening? Thank you, Emma van Rixtel.

3477.1 | Here's why | IOSG::MAURICE | Differently hirsute | Mon Nov 01 1993 20:14 | 12 |
Hi, The explanation is that ALL-IN-1 has its own unique filename algorithm which generates filenames beginning with Z, and the File Cabinet Server has a different one which generates filenames beginning with I. Since the File Cabinet Server is used for all cross-drawer operations (and some others), any cross-drawer document copy will cause a filename beginning with I to be created. Cheers Stuart

Re .0 I think it's an 8 character name rather than 9, and the original intention was that the physical filename would fit the DOS 8.3 format.

It is 8.3 as Nigel says, plus the I was put in to indicate that the file was created by the FCS (formerly called Index Server), this was done for another form of problem chasing. We could tell who created the file , IOS or FCS. --Bob |
