1981.0. "ALL-IN-1: error in sending mails" by EVOCDG::DEC_HELLAS () Thu Dec 17 1992 12:45

    Hello,

    Since one week now we facing the following problem:

    When someone from his/her ALL-IN-1 account tries to send a mail or
    refile it, the following message is displaied:

    %OA-W-IOCOPY, Error copying file to OA$SHAREnn:filename.WPL
    -RMS-E-CRE, ACP file create failed
    -SYSTEM-W-DIRALLOC, allocation failure on directory file

    where nn is the number of the SHARE directory on the ALL-IN-1 disk,
    and filename is the strange name that the ALL-IN-1 gives to a file.

    After retrying a couple of times, the message has been sent!

    The disk that the ALL-IN-1 system is located is RA92 and has 473085
    blocks free.It is shared among two nodes which form a cluster called
    ATHINA. The two nodes are VAX6000-510 (ATH651) and VAX8530 (ATH853).

    Any help will be more than welcomed!

    It is really urgent!!!

    Thank you,
    Toula Dimopoulou from IS depart. in Digital Equipment Corp. Hellas (Greece)

1981.1New directories - QUICK!IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeThu Dec 17 1992 12:5511
    This is just a VMS (well RMS really) error telling you that the
    directory is full. Create some new shared areas *AT ONCE* and move the
    write window so the old ones aren't used.

    Simultaneously, get your users to delete some old messages.

    You mus have an enormous number of messages in the directory to get
    this error, unless the disc is set up in a very strange way.
    Performance is probably pretty badly affected too!

    Toula,

    	I agree with Graham.

    	FYI. Directory files need to allocated contiguously. When a
    	directory needs to extend (because it's full), an attempt will
    	be made to contiguously allocate a number of blocks large enough
    	to hold the old directory file and the new extension. If this
    	fails then the error you are seeing will occur.

    	I recommend that you BACKUP and restore the disk ASAP and then look
    	at creating new shared areas as required (RSD will do this for
    	you).

    Regards,

    Iain.
