| Technically, there has never been a problem adding extra languages to
the US kit. We do it all the time for testing.
However, they have never been in the Price book, and have never been
supported in the US.
I heard a rumour this might be changing for V3.0...
What's happened before is that the local office did a deal with the
support organisation in the country owning the language kit to support
it in the US if required. Or multi-national companies just bought it,
and got support through a branch of their organisation in the right
country.

| Eileen,
This is the current "official" position but since someone has realised
that there are people who don't speak American English in the U.S
(like me for example) expect this to change soon - actually it was
supposed to have changed at the beginning of the financial year but
didn't.
You can either contact the Product Manager Bill Colquitt @ZKO or
contact me and i'll try and point you at some more "futures" on this.

If in the future you are concerned that an answer given you by a
Support Specialist in the CSC is incorrect, please attempt to
clarify the issue via the supported mechanisms. Ie. Ask to be
transferred to a consultant or the Manager on Duty.
In fact the answer from the CSC should have been (and I believe
was) that additional languages for ALL-IN-1 are not SUPPORTED in
the US geography. This may change in the future and the correct
channel for obtaining further information is via Product
Management.
Cheers,
Iain.

| Yes, but so was V2.4, and possibly V2.3 (I can't remember when I
changed it!) as I said in .1 it's a political problem not a technical
one.
Fortunately it appears that there is some good news coming!

So you are saying that I *can* get another language or I *can't*
get another language? If I can, then:
Where?
What is the price?
Do you need an additional license for the language?
How does the customer order the extra language?
The customer has told me he will install the extra language and not
worry about support. Can he do that?

1430.8 | I don't think it's just semantics ... | AIMTEC::VOLLER_I | Gordon (T) Gopher for President | Fri Sep 18 1992 22:14 | 20 |
| Eileen,
The message I was trying to get across in .3 is that *currently* there
is no way to get support for additional languages via the CSC.
If a customer has obtained a kit through other means (Local Office or
whatever) the people who supplied that kit will have to work out any
local support directly with the customer and/or other support
organizations external to the USA. As far as I am aware additional
languages for ALL-IN-1 are not in the price book for US customers and
I have no way of knowing what other sources could be utilized to
legally obtain kits.
I am involved in the discussions as to how we can work this issue and
hope that there will be some good news soon.
Regards,
Iain.

| Eileen,
Contact Bill Colquitt (A1VAX::) @ZKO. He can explain why we don't sell
secondary languages in the US. His DTN is 381-2778.
Thanks,
~K.
PS .8 *is* the party line.

Just out of interest, please post his explanation here.
I am amazed that a number of small European Countries
is able to support three of four languages and
the US only supports one ?! I wonder how we bring this
to our customers. If we want to be in Software and
Services (am I correct Bob ?) I would say: sell
any language in any country....

1430.11 | Bill knows | A1VAX::BARTH | Shun the frumious Bandersnatch | Mon Sep 21 1992 21:04 | 14 |
| The explanation is long maze of twisty passages, all different. :^)
What I remember is:
- DEC's sales ordering system isn't very smart
- Support is not in place (yes, it could be, but it isn't funded)
- There is legal liability - the US is still overly litigous
There's more. Talk to Bill. And no flames/comments about my little
list, please. I'm not pretending to really have the issue well in
hand.
Thanks,
K.
