713.0. "DDS Implementation Help" by WOTVAX::MORRISON () Tue May 19 1992 19:42

ICI have recently installed a version of ALL-IN-1 V2.4 with DDS
enabled. They are finding that DDS is being invoked at strange
times, and would like someone to help explain why. Interestingly
enough, they find that DDS only uses about 3.8% CPU rather than
the 5% mentioned in David Hare's bible.

As part of their ALL-IN-1 user startup, they invoke the calendar
function "SET DATE ...". This invokes DDS, and uses up 1 CPU
sec. Given that they have 5000 logons per day, this is crippling
their ALL-IN-1 cluster. ICI are looking for someone who
understands DDS implementation in the ALL-IN-1 environment to
work with them to explain how DDS operates. They are quite
willing to pay for this expertise, providing it is of the right
calibre.

If anyone fancies a trip to the North of England, all expenses
paid, please explain why DDS is invoked, and how the CPU usage
can be reduced, and the trip is yours.

    Randall,

    there's no secret and no need to travel to the north of england!

    And there's certainly nothing strange about DDS getting invoked...
    The CALENDAR functions end up calling MAIL INITIALIZE which as part
    of its operations initialize DDS.

    Sir David Hare's 5% probably refers to the smaller CPUs we had in the old
    days or it may just have been a figure we guessed at one night in the
    George & Dragon on the Wokingham Road (:==:)

713.2DDS consultancy requirementWOTVAX::MORRISONTue May 26 1992 18:1446

ICI Pharmaceuticals U.K. have just installed DDS on their
ALL-IN-1 cluster. This supports approx. 2500 users. There was a
slight performance hit, which was partly expected.

They have now asked for someone from Digital to visit their site,
who has the following skills. This trip will be delivered on a
consultancy basis, all expenses paid. Is there anyone out there
who matches the profile and would like a trip to the North of
England ? btw the weather is wonderful, even better than
Valbonne at the moment.

Thanks in anticipation.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DDS EXPERT CONSULTANCY

Further to your meeting with Kevin Marchant and Brian Raw last week, Kevin
has asked me to confirm the request for DDS consultancy and to identify the
skills required.

In the light of the performance problems experienced at Alderley Park, please
could you arrange access to an ALL-IN-1/DDS expert for us. I believe the
expert's skills should include :

- knowledge of the ALL-IN-1 interface to DDS
	- how it operates
	- when DDS interface is initialised
	- actions performed during initialisation
	- actions performed during enquiries

- experience of implementing DDS on large ALL-IN-1 clusters (2000 users)

- knowledge of potential bottlenecks in both ALL-IN-1 interface and DDS

- experience of investigating and resolving those bottlenecks

- knowledge of system and network requirements
	- confirmation of ICI world search node sizing recommendations

- knowledge of VMS, ALL-IN-1 and DDS tuning parameters

Please could you identify a suitable expert and forward his/her CV to us for
confirmation.

Thanks for re-positioning the note, I'm not too hot on Notes
etiquette. However, I am desperate to find an ALL-IN-1 / DDS
expert. I have asked the services organisation to find someone,
but thought the Notes file might be a good source of expertise.

713.6Try a mail conferenceIOSG::TALLETTMaking broccoliThu May 28 1992 01:176

    	Try a mail type notes conference. We are short of DDS know-how
    	in ALL-IN-1 engineering, so you may be barking up the wrong tree.

713.7Need ALL-IN-1 and DDS expertiseWOTVAX::MORRISONThu May 28 1992 13:2012
Paul,

I will post the note in the MAILbus conference. However, DDS
expertise is not quite enough. ICI are looking for someone who
has implemented DDS in an ALL-IN-1 environment. They want to
understand the implications of their DDS usage within ALL-IN-1.

Thanks
