2243.1 | no backing store in VMS V5.3 | PSW::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Fri Feb 09 1990 20:54 | 8 |
| RE: .0
The product description says USEABLE FOR backing store. It doesn't say
PROVIDES backing store. All the SPX provides is 4 megabytes of off-screen
memory. How that memory gets used is up to the software. The VMS DECwindows
server in VMS V5.3 does not provide backing store.

| To be more specific, you (the application) typically use Pixmaps for
backing store. These are stored in the spx offscreen memory. Since it holds
more than a gpx, you can have more of them there without incurring paging.
Also, when the VMS server supports backing store, it will do so using the
4 Megapixels mentioned. It does not yet do so.

Re -1
Can you tell me when (which VMS release) I can expect to use this
nice feature with the X-sever of VMS. The X-server on my DECstation 3100
has no problems with backing_store = Always and save_under = true.

As with all VMS futures, you must ask the product manager about this.
The product manager for VMS DECwindows is Janis Horn, JARETH::HORN.
