| Responsiveness to needs, positive strokes/rewards when deserved....
I like a manager who acknowledges me, any needs I have from her as a
manager, and my accomplishments - it enables and encourages me to excel.

p.s. that's the gender-globel "her", which is taken to mean "her or
him", of course....

| What makes a good manager?
I like a manager I can look up to. He/she should have the skills
that I'd like to have. He/she should be a person I can respect.

| A person who can value an aspect of your job or life because it is important to
you. Even if they could care less about it.

| A good boss asks for input before making a decision or
committment that affects their people. A mediocre boss
makes the decision, then asks for feedback. A lousy boss
makes the decision and doesn't bother asking what their
people think.

| A good manager at least makes the attempt to understand what you do
technically. I'm not talking details, I mean the medium picture. I get
so tired of "big picture" people that haven't got a clue what is
happening. Unit level managers need to be more involved or why bother
having them?
A personal FLAME:
I HATEHATEHATE managers that are too lilly livered to deal with
personnel problems. Just telling people to "deal with it" when that is
obviously not working doesn't cut it. liesl

| Easy, one who'll work for me and not just the other way around.
When its a two-way street amazing stuff can get done ... too bad many
manager's haven't learned that trick yet.

1061.11 | I need to learn from supervisors | DECWET::DADDAMIO | Testing proves testing works | Fri Mar 30 1990 00:25 | 15 |
| I have a hard time dealing with a supervisor that I can't learn
something from. They don't have to be technically better, but I need
to be able to learn something from them.
One manager I had a DEC was extremely responsive to people and situations.
I was due for a raise and at that time my husband had just taken a new job
on the other coast and it would be 1 1/2 months before I moved. One week
I had some jewelry stolen and my favorite dog died (talk about a bad
week!). My supervisor did some quick paperwork and running around so I
could get my raise on the Friday of that week, just so something nice
would happen that week (I probably would have gotten it a few weeks
later). That was such a boost to me - I'll never forget it! She was
also a lot younger than me, but I learned a lot from her!

I have a WONDERFUL boss right now. He:
.Lets me do my job
.Supports me if/when I ask for it
.Is objective and gathers ALL sides of an issue BEFORE
making any decisions on it
.Gives us (his reports) RESPECT
.Handles issues in a timely manner
.Is NOT jealous of any of us. Lets us GROW and encourages this.
I feel all of these are to his credit and he is an excellent
role model for anyone wanting to be a manager ANYWHERE.

When you're in the middle of something important and tired
of interruptions, and your boss comes in with yet another
interruption of low priority... When you can look at your
boss with a kinda deadpan expression, point to the office
door, and say
OUT.
And, of course, if your boss is cool, it will not be held
against you in the future ;-).

If I were to do that I would expect cooperation, as I wouldn't
have asked were it not important...
One thing you can do is offer Boss a choice..."which do you want
done first?"..
If one of my people were to do that, I'd assume they were joking..
