| There are several possibilites here.
The first thing I would try is a very strong solution of ammonia.
It is the best known cleaner against grease. If this doesn't work,
go to a professional janitorial supply service and buy some heavy
duty de-greaser. This is almost bound to work! As a former window
washer, we always used ammonia solutions to an outstanding clean
and shine; however, when there was old oil, grease, or linseed oil
on the windows, we would use the de-greaser first, then follow it
with ammonia/water.

| Undiluted ammonia, Jane...let it sit a bit on the worst spots.
For the baked-on parts (as around the burner rings), use lye-based oven
cleaner if the surface will tolerate it. But naturally be very
cautious!

| Just a word of caution from an ex-chemistry teacher. Be sure
your kitchen is *well* ventilated when you use full strength
ammonia or lye and be *VERY* careful with both of them.
Another place to look for information on this subject would be
in JOET::HOME_WORK, press the 7 on your key pad or the select
key to add Home_work to your notebook.

| We have a product out here in California called "Simply Green"??
I think. It is a biodegradable grease cutting cleaning solution. I
use it when I work on my car to clean up greasy things. It also works
well in the kitchen.

| re .6, (not specifically directed to you, just a generic caution)-
Spic N Span + Ammonia in water happens not to release toxic gases.
But people should be *very* careful when considering mixing together
household cleaning products. Many will react with each other to form
lethal gases.
For safety's sake, use the products *only* as the label directs.

Doug's word of caution is a good one. For example, never, ever,
*EVER* mix ammonia and bleach for any reason.
re:.0
I assume that you've already tried simply squirting dishwashing
liquid on the stovetop or counter and scrubbing? The stuff *is*
made for grease-cutting, after all. I've found that Dawn liquid
works well for this.
Another solution I've heard suggested, though I've never tried
it myself, is to use shampoo (the "for normal to oily hair"
variety), for much the same reason as dishwashing liquid.

Dawn'll take a layer of skin off you rfingers, too. It is great
for cutting grease on dishes.
I use baking soda and water to clean stains (almost any kind) and
grease from kitchen counters.

A fine example of one of my favorite principles:

of high explosives."
