Yes, and Margaret is, too. It's a lovely coincidence.

Well, i mentioned it in the first version of the notesfile, but it was
near the end. Perhaps you weren't paying attention to the old note on
non-sexist wedding ideas. i wasn't either, until recently. it's like
buying a house -- for all your life, you don't care about mortgages,
points, purchase-and-sales agreements, and then all of a sudden -BOOM-
you're an expert. The day after the event, it's all forgotten. I expect
to forget all about weddings (but not about marriage!) on the 4th of
September.
While i'm on the subject (and so that our wedding doesn't have to take
up too many more notes): We'd asked for suggestions for nice
indoor/outdoor weddings in the earlier note. We looked at a bunch of
them (many of which are discussed in note 100 of the massachusetts.note
conference. press PF7 to add it). Nothing affordable was available
until November, at which time it's not really that important to have an
indoor/outdoor wedding. We've just about settled on the Children's
Museum in Boston. Somehow it seems fitting.

I do like this conference and the people who participate here.
my objections are to the policies that have been adopted over time.
I think that alot of the controversy that still exists between men
and women here arises not so much from male/female dominace games
as it does from the inherent injustices of a purely democratic policy
process. Recall that the U.S. is not a pure democracy and it was
designed that way not because the population was too large, but
because of fear of the tyrrany of the majority. That is what I've
seen happen here as policies are adopted on a purely "majority rules"
basis.
I did not intend to start a political discussion in this reply,
my intent is to make it clear that it is nothing personal, I do
like you all, as individuals.

| re 3.31
> I consider myself a humanist (a title I just made up), which I

> file.
I believe "humanist" has been around for a while. I was
raised to believe that humanism = valueing people = a good
thing. About a decade ago I dated a boy (correct term--we
were 17) whose family was religiously quite conservative, and
I went with him to a special series on <mumble> put on by his
church. It had to do with the rise of "humanism" as a
movement that started during the Renaissance which valued
people. Apparently valueing people was bad, because that
meant one valued God less...Quite frankly, I was appalled.
I have continued to be bothered by hearing subtle and
not-so-subtle denigration of "humanism" ever since, and being
a "humanist" seems to be politically incorrect in some
circles these days.
So I, for one, am tickled pink to hear you describe yourself
as a humanist. Welcome to =wm=, Kerry!

I'm glad that there are still some "humanists" in the world! I'm
22 years old and it seems to be a growing trend for young men and
women to lean more towards "humanism" than "feminism." Being so
young during the 70's, when feminism was on the uprise, I really
cannot identify with some aspects of the feminist movement. I
feel as though I have a lot more opportunity because of the feminist
movement (the early days) but I don't really truly consider *myself*
a feminist.

Send someone a care package of lefse, and they'll eat lefse for a day.
Send someone a lefse recipe, and they'll eat lefse for a lifetime.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingredients:
1 Quart of Mashed Potatoes
1/2 Cup Shortening (or Butter or Margarine)
2 Tablespoons Cream (or milk)
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Sugar
2 Cups of Flour
Mash the potatoes very finely. Add shortening while the potatoes
are still hot, so that it will melt and mix more easily. Stir in
the cream and salt.
Chill overnight.
Add the flour just before rolling the lefse out. Roll into very
thin pancakes, using a rolling cloth and plenty of extra flour.
Cook on a dry griddle and flip when the lefse is just a little
brown.

as pertaining to a road without a median strip. This allows
me to define "middle" from case to case, depending on the condition

However, in this Note-File I will tend to remain in the background.

| This seems as good a place as any to put this . . .
Next week is my last week at DEC for a while -- I start my
maternity leave the following week. It's hard to believe the time
is finally here! It seemed to take so long . . .
I plan to return in January, after the holidays.
I'll see you all then!

that I do not "note" very often and I keep a lot of my thoughts to myself
now...but I still read.

There are quite a few of us who feel the need to take "vacations"
from this conference (and Notes in general) from time to time.
I've done it myself on several occasions in the past 4 years.
Even in the past six months, I've spent far more time writing in
Soapbox than in =wn=, although I always try to keep up with my
reading here.
What I like about Soapbox is that women/feminists aren't required
to engage in heated debates with one arm tied behind our backs. We
can defend our positions freely, which is far less stressful than
bearing the burden of having "niceness" demanded of us in debating
situations that are *far* from "nice" already.
=wn= is always Number One with me when it comes to reading, though.
Always will be, probably.

been a bit uncomfortable with the necessity of announcing your gender
in order to register in =wn=.
(In addition to it making gender of immediate importance, as edp pointed out,
where would a True Hermaphrodite introduce himself? {I say "him" because
I believe they are XY.} What about a transexual currently in the process
of becoming the other sex? What about someone who identifies as neuter?
{I read about sucha person.})

4.109 | what I know about it | WMOIS::B_REINKE | if you are a dreamer, come in.. | Mon Mar 12 1990 13:25 | 12 |
| Mez,
It is my impression that those who started the newer version of soapbox
felt that the old one no longer held to the 'ideals' of the original
versions of soapbox and that the older box had become too restrictive
in re abolishing things like personal insults and profanity.
Of course I am not one of the individuals who started up the newer
box so this is entirely conjecture. It is also my impression that
the older - more restrictive - box is the more active.

the gibney::soapbox was created by edp, who is proposing a "rule"
in this file that creates a possible base for moderator complaints.
it will then open this file up to the same abuse that pear::soapbox
received regarding his interpretation of moderator action.
seems like history repeating itself.

I did not create Gibney::Soapbox.
I did not solicit or suggest Gibney::Soapbox.
I do not moderate Gibney::Soapbox.
I was contacted by Patrick Leach who asked for my help in setting up
Gibney::Soapbox. Patrick Leach created the conference. I proposed an
initial format, wrote the first few notes, and set up the conference
access, title, et cetera. Then I turned over moderatorship to other
people.
